Aseptic meningitis from herpes simplex virus proctitis.

Sexually transmitted proctitis, a prevalent concern among men who have sex with men (MSM) is frequently caused by a range of pathogens, including herpes simplex virus (HSV), Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis While HSV-associated proctitis typically presents with visible lesions, cases without external manifestations remain evasive. We report the case of an MSM in his early 30s presenting with dyschezia and perineal discomfort after unprotected anoreceptive intercourse. Despite initial inconspicuous findings, rectal swabs revealed HSV-2 infection. Subsequent escalation to purulent

Recurrent Aseptic (Mollaret) Meningitis: A Case Report.

Mollaret meningitis is a rare form of recurrent, self-resolving, aseptic meningitis with a high rate of return. Although it has been associated with several conditions, herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is most common. Diagnosis requires recurrent (>3) episodes of aseptic meningitis as defined by pleocytosis in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) with negative bacterial cultures. Management is controversial but focuses primarily on supportive care with a potential role for antiviral therapy in both treatment and prevention of recurrence. This case describes a 35-year-old male with fourteen prior episo

Ibuprofen: The Hidden Culprit Behind Aseptic Meningitis.

Drug-induced aseptic meningitis represents a significant clinical entity characterized by an inflammatory response of the meninges triggered by specific pharmacological agents. This condition predominantly manifests as a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to a variety of drugs, most notably non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and monoclonal antibodies. We report a case of aseptic meningitis in a 54-year-old male presenting with nausea and blurred vision two hours after taking ibuprofen. This case aims to highlight one underrecognized adverse event a

Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole induced aseptic meningitis case report.

RATIONALE: Drug-induced aseptic meningitis (DIAM) is an uncommon meningitis and trimethoprim with or without sulfamethoxazole is the most involved antibiotic. Although DIAM is easily treated with the discontinuation of the causative drug, the diagnosis is a big challenge for physicians, as it remains a diagnosis of exclusion. Here, we present a case report of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole induced aseptic meningitis in a woman with acute osteomyelitis. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 52-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital for septic shock and acute osteomyelitis of the right homerus. She was start

Aseptic meningitis following AZD1222 COVID-19 vaccination.

The AZD1222 is one of the vaccines used against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is currently being used in many countries worldwide. Some important neurological side effects have been reported in association with this vaccine, but aseptic meningitis has not yet been reported. Herein, we report a case of aseptic meningitis in a 26-year-old health care worker, following the first dose of the AZD1222 vaccine.

IBUPROFEN-INDUCED ASEPTIC MENINGITIS: A CASE REPORT.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of a male adolescent with the diagnosis of ibuprofen-induced meningitis. We discuss themain causes of drug-induced aseptic meningitis (DIAM) and highlight the importance of early recognition of DIAM, sothat the offending drug can be withdrawn, and recurrences prevented. Only few DIAM cases have been reported in pediatric age. CASE DESCRIPTION: A healthy 15-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with headache, nausea, dizziness, fever, conjunctival hyperemia and blurred vision 30 minutes after ibuprofen-intake. During his stay, he developed emesis and ne

Drug-induced aseptic meningitis: a mini-review.

Aseptic meningitis associates a typical clinical picture of meningitis with the absence of bacterial or fungal material in the cerebrospinal fluid. Drug-induced aseptic meningitis (DIAM) may be due to two mechanisms: (i) a direct meningeal irritation caused by the intrathecal administration of drugs and (ii) an immunologic hypersensitivity reaction to a systemic administration. If the direct meningeal irritation allows a rather easy recognition, the immunologic hypersensitivity reaction is a source of challenging diagnostics. DIAM linked to a systemic treatment exerts typically an early onset,

Immunoglobulin-induced aseptic meningitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin associated meningitis is a rare disease that mimics infectious meningitis. This is, to our knowledge, the first case of Immunoglobulin-associated meningitis described in a patient with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and hypogammaglobulinemia secondary to Rituximab. CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old female with a past medical history of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, presented with meningismus 36 h after first infusion of intravenous immunoglobulin. The cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed neutrophilic pleocytosis and hyperproteinorrachia. All microbiological tests were n

Aseptic meningitis following a bupivacaine spinal anesthesia.

Spinal anesthesia complicated by meningitis is rare. The diagnosis is difficult and the clinical signs are unspecific. There is a subgroup called aseptic meningitis of a different mechanism (hypersensitive reaction and irritation of the meninges), which must be identified for appropriate care. We report the case of aseptic meningitis resulting from bupivacaine use complicating spinal anesthesia. She is 31 years old and was admitted to the intensive care unit for meningitis following a Caesarean delivery. 10 hours after the procedure, she was found to have severe headache, neck stiffness and wa

Lamotrigine-induced aseptic meningitis: a case report.

Aseptic meningitis could be a rare side effect of lamotrigine. Aseptic meningitis is a clinical condition where symptoms, signs and laboratory findings are consistent with meningeal inflammation but routine bacterial cultures are negative. Clinical presentation of aseptic meningitis is similar to bacterial meningitis with prominent symptoms of fever, headache and neck stiffness. Drug-induced aseptic meningitis is an uncommon adverse effect of several drugs. The most common ones are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, intravenous immunoglobulins, intrathecal agents and vaccines. Disease manif

Mumps vaccine virus strains and aseptic meningitis.

Mumps immunization can easily be included in national schedules, particularly if combined with measles or measles and rubella vaccines, but debate continues concerning the relative safety of various licensed mumps vaccine strains. The opportunities for control of mumps are also being affected by differences in the cost of the vaccines prepared with different strains of mumps virus. The present report evaluates available data on the association of the Urabe and other strains of mumps vaccine with the occurrence of aseptic meningitis. We also review the comparative immunogenicity and efficacies

Aseptic meningitis with mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome.

The diagnosis of mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome is based on the clinical picture as much as on the laboratory findings. It is often considered late in the course of illness. Enteroviral infections and mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome have several common clinical features. Inability to recognize this syndrome can result in misdiagnosis of a viral syndrome with aseptic meningitis.

[Aseptic meningitis after isotope cisternography. 2 Cases].

In these two patients, as in 13 others described in the literature, a typical meningitic syndrome with excitement, confusion and a fever of 104degrees F (40degrees C) appeared 4-6 hours following the intra-thecal injection. Subsequent lumbar puncture usually reveals a cloudy C.S.F. under increased pressure. The polymorphs and proteins are increased but the glucose remains normal. There are no bacteria either on direct examination or after culture. All the patients receive antibiotics. After a course of three days, the symptoms and the fever have disappeared and the C.S.F. became normal. Bacter

Scrub typhus meningitis: An under-recognized cause of aseptic meningitis in India.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) involvement in scrub typhus is seen in up to a quarter of patients. However, the literature on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and outcome in meningitis/meningo-encephalitis due to scrub typhus is scant. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included patients who were admitted to a medical college hospital with scrub typhus meningitis/meningo-encephalitis between 2005 and 2011. The clinical and laboratory profile, details of CSF analysis and outcome were documented. RESULTS: The study included 189 patients with meningitis/meningo-encephal

Aseptic and Bacterial Meningitis: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention.

Meningitis refers to inflammation of the meninges surrounding the brain. Meningitis may vary from a benign, self-limited condition to one that may cause disability or death. The most common bacterial pathogens are Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus), Haemophilus influenzae type B, Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus), and group B beta-hemolytic streptococci (Streptococcus agalactiae). Adults and older children with meningitis may present with neck stiffness, fever, headache, and altered mentation. Lumbar puncture with cerebrospinal fluid analysis is the mainstay for diagnosis and should

Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole-Induced Aseptic Meningitis: A New Approach.

Inflammation of the meningeal linings of the central nervous system (CNS), also known as meningitis, is one of the serious presentations in the emergency because it carries high morbidity and mortality. The most common cause is pus-producing organisms. However, non-suppurative meningitis, termed aseptic meningitis, is another cause of meningeal inflammation. Many etiologies stand behind aseptic meningitis. Those etiologies include viral and non-viral, drug-induced, malignancy, and systemic inflammation. Drug-induced aseptic meningitis is a rare type of meningitis. Although it is easily treated
