The menisci play a role as shock absorbers and distribute the pressure uniformly over the joint cartilage. Other functions are: the nutrition of the joint cartilage, secondary stability and proprioception. In case of a torn meniscus, one should first attempt to suture the meniscus, followed by arthroscopic partial meniscectomy if suturing is impossible. In a large proportion of patients, arthrosis with pain and loss of function of the knee develops several years after the meniscectomy. In order to alleviate the symptoms of such arthrosis, a trial of meniscus transplantation was undertaken. In

Retrospective review of 10 patients who presented with avascular necrosis of the ipsilateral femoral condyle following arthroscopic meniscectomy (9 medial, 1 lateral). The bone lesions were evaluated by radiography and MRI, which were repeated for few patients. MRI allows earlier diagnosis of avascular necrosis of the femoral condyle and offers an evaluation of extent of the lesions whose evolution is variable: 3 patients required a knee prothesis, the other 7 patients were treated medically.

CONTEXT: Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) after meniscal tear has been widely accepted and associated with quick return to activity. Unfortunately, meniscectomy is associated with risk for knee osteoarthritis, which may be attributed to postsurgical quadriceps weakness. This has important implications, as the quadriceps play a prominent role in knee stabilization and energy attenuation in the lower extremity.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the magnitude of interlimb quadriceps strength deficits in people with unilateral APM by systematically reviewing the current literature.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Although surgical treatment of meniscus injuries has made great progress, meniscectomy remains the most frequently indicated intervention. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the long-term radiological results of isolated subtotal and total meniscectomies and compare them with the clinical results.
MATERIAL: The assessed group included 22 men and 8 women at an average age of 35 years; nine and 21 knees, respectively, were treated by isolated subtotal and total meniscectomy in the period from 1987 to 1989. The lateral meniscus was operated on in six knees

In this paper, a 5-year-experience in arthroscopic meniscectomy at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, General Hospital Pozega, is presented. Patient data were obtained from medical documentation and physical examination after surgery and completed rehabilitation. We describe arthroscopic examination of the knee joint in our patients and finding of meniscal rupture, which ended with partial or subtotal meniscectomy. During the period since 1st January 1995 to December 31st 1999, at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in our hospital, 442 arthroscopies of the knee joints were performed. We

A prospective study was undertaken to investigate the occurrence and possible sources of microbial contamination in association with open meniscectomy of the knee. Sixty patients were randomized into three closed suction drainage regimens of 12, 24 and 48 hours' postoperative suction drainage, respectively. Specimens for bacterial culture were taken from the joint at the time of surgery, from the surgical suction tips, from the subcutaneous part of the drain surface and from the drain-contained fluid at the time of drain removal. The airborne bacterial contamination showed no marked role in th

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short- to intermediate-term results of meniscal allograft transplantation after total meniscectomy of torn discoid lateral menisci, which are usually wider and thicker than normal lateral menisci.
METHODS: Between 1996 and 2003, 14 meniscal allografts were implanted in 14 patients with a previous total or near-total resection of torn discoid lateral menisci. All patients had a minimum of 21 months of follow-up, with a mean of 58 months. Osteochondritis dissecans was present in 3 cases, and osteochondral autograft transfer was performed in

Late degenerative changes are known to follow meniscectomy, but there is little agreement on their incidence or on which patients are most at risk. A total of 210 patients have been reviewed 10 to 22 years after meniscectomy, and long leg radiographs taken of both knees. Radiological degeneration was seen in 18%, while 7% had significant symptoms and signs. Statistical analysis showed increased changes in older patients, in those with abnormal leg alignment, and in those who had undergone lateral as against medial meniscectomy. Our findings emphasise the important mechanical function of the me

Knee arthroscopy is an important diagnostic and therapeutic tool in the management of disorders of the knee. In a series of 4 articles, the basics of knee arthroscopy are reviewed. In this article (part 4), the basics of operative knee arthroscopy are reviewed including chondroplasty and meniscectomy. Evaluation of the cruciate ligaments is also reviewed. Mastery of these techniques is critical for the treatment of the most common pathology encountered during knee arthroscopy.

The present study investigated the crossover effect of three rehabilitation programs (isokinetic, isotonic and home exercise), that were focused on the involved extremity, on the isokinetic performance of knee flexors and extensors and the functional performance of the uninvolved leg in subjects who underwent arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. Twenty-eight patients (mean age: 28) were measured for isokinetic performance and functional performance with the single jump, triple jump and vertical jump 14 days and 33 days after surgery. Peak torque of hamstrings at 60 degrees /sec (p = .008), hamst

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between radiographic hand osteoarthritis (OA), a disease with marked heredity, and radiographic knee OA in patients treated with meniscectomy.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified 170 patients (mean age 54 years [range 33-87 years], 23% women) who had undergone isolated meniscectomy an average of 20 years earlier (range 17-22 years). Patients with cruciate ligament injury were excluded. All subjects were examined by standardized knee and hand radiography. Individual joints were considered to have OA when displaying radiographic features corresponding t

We report a case of an osteonecrosis-like lesion of the knee that developed shortly after an arthroscopic medial meniscectomy. Clinical presentation, physical findings, and imaging of the knee including magnetic resonance imaging were similar to those of the cases that have been reported as osteonecrosis after meniscectomy. However, histologic analysis of the lesion revealed that there was no osteonecrosis but rather a subchondral microfracture with active callus formation.

A prospective study of 21 patients after a meniscectomy is presented. During a standardized training program, consisting of static and dynamic exercises five times a week during 8 weeks, the following clinical signs were monitored: pain, swelling and limitation of the range of motion of the knee joint. Furthermore, isometric and isokinetic maximal torque of the knee extensors of both legs was determined in the patient group, as well as in a control group of healthy subjects (n = 11). We found that swelling of the knee joint seems to be the major cause of inhibition of muscle strength, resultin

A review is presented of early results of a consecutive series of 45 bucket-handle or flap tears of a meniscus treated by closed partial meniscectomy over a two-year period. The mean operating time was 45 minutes. All patients were treated in hospital and 39 of 41 assessable patients were discharged within 24 hours of operation. The mean time to return to work was 12.9 days. One patient later required arthrotomy to excise a residual nubbin of meniscal tissue which had been incompletely removed and caused pain. At follow-up at a mean of eight months after operation only one patient had temporar

PURPOSE: We report our experience with the effect of location and configuration of meniscal tears on clinical outcomes.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwent partial meniscectomy or meniscal repair between 2008 and 2016 was conducted. One hundred fourteen knees in 106 patients were included, comprising 43 partial meniscectomies and 71 meniscal repairs. Patients were graded pre- and postoperatively with the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) score and Tegner Activity Level Scale. Meniscal tears were classified according to location (anterior horn, body, poste

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) severity is a predictor of outcomes after arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) grading of OA is predictive of postoperative outcomes; this prospective study assessed whether radiographic grading is also predictive of outcomes.
METHODS: Patients who underwent APM between February 2015 and January 2016, underwent radiography and MRI ≤6 months before surgery, and had outcomes from the surgery date and one year later were included. Surgical failure was defined as <10-point improvement in the Knee Osteoarthritis Outcome Scor

BACKGROUND: Postoperative knee joint chondrolysis is a rare but serious complication. The aim of our study is to report the clinical presentation, the early, mid and long-term outcomes of rapid chondrolysis after a partial lateral meniscectomy in elite athletes.
METHODS: Clinical records of 10 consecutive cases of rapid chondrolysis after partial lateral meniscectomy in eight professional athletes were retrospectively reviewed. There were seven males and one female with a mean age of 25.2 years (range 20-32 years) at index procedure. An initial conservative approach to its treatment was attem

BACKGROUND: Discoid lateral meniscus of the knee is common in Chinese population. There has been considerable debate about the best treatment for discoid lateral meniscus tears. The purpose of this study was to observe the effect of arthroscopic meniscectomy for the treatment of discoid lateral meniscus tears.
METHODS: Between July 1999 and December 2004, arthroscopic meniscectomy was performed on 62 menisci of 57 patients with discoid lateral meniscus tears (52 unilateral, 5 bilateral). 41 menisci were "complete discoid meniscus", 21 "incomplete". According to the extent of the meniscus tear
