Changes in skin blood flow during the menstrual cycle: the influence of the menstrual cycle on the peripheral circulation in healthy female volunteers.

1. It is known that females have a lower skin perfusion than males. In women there are also differences in blood flow at different reproductive stages of their lives. As an initial investigation of the possible contribution of sex hormones to these differences, we studied skin and forearm blood flow during the natural changes in hormone levels which occur during the menstrual cycle. 2. Thirty-one healthy female volunteers were studied. The effect of a standardized finger cooling test (immersion of a gloved hand in a 16 degrees C water bath) on finger skin temperature and on laser Doppler flux

The menstrual cycle: an overlooked vital sign in psychiatry?

We argue that psychiatry has overlooked a significant modifiable risk factor for mental illness in female patients: cyclical symptoms associated with the menstrual cycle. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder has recently been included in the International Classification of Diseases-11, while there is growing evidence that menstrual cycle stage can impact mental health symptoms transdiagnostically and influence important outcomes such as suicide or admission to hospital. Intervention is possible using existing widely available hormonal treatments. Asking patients about the relationship between their

The Menstrual Cycle as a Vital Sign: a comprehensive review.

Some medical professional organizations have advocated for including the menstrual cycle as a vital sign in adolescence, but not in adulthood. However, documenting menstrual cycle patterns is not routine clinical or research practice. Vital signs are used to predict health outcomes, indicate needed treatment, and monitor a clinical course. They can help identify pathologies, affirm wellness, and are responsive to exposures. Here we review the scientific evidence showing how the menstrual cycle meets these criteria and should therefore be treated as a vital sign. Using key words and controlled

Temperature regulation in women: Effects of the menstrual cycle.

Core body temperature changes across the ovulatory menstrual cycle, such that it is 0.3°C to 0.7°C higher in the post-ovulatory luteal phase when progesterone is high compared with the pre-ovulatory follicular phase. This temperature difference, which is most evident during sleep or immediately upon waking before any activity, is used by women as a retrospective indicator of an ovulatory cycle. Here, we review both historical and current literature aimed at characterizing changes in core body temperature across the menstrual cycle, considering the assessment of the circadian rhythm of core bod

Timing for a Laparoscopic Myomectomy During the Menstrual Cycle.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the different phases (follicular phase, luteal phase, or menstruation) of the menstrual cycle could affect the operative blood loss during a laparoscopic myomectomy. DESIGN: Retrospective comparative study. SETTING: University hospital. PATIENTS: A total of 220 patients who underwent a laparoscopic myomectomy were classified into the follicular phase (n = 90), luteal phase (n = 93), and menstruation group (n = 37) on the basis of the adjusted day of the menstrual cycle. INTERVENTIONS: Laparoscopic myomectomy. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The operative blo

Variability in ratings of trustworthiness across the menstrual cycle.

This study investigated how trusting behavior varies in naturally cycling women, as a function of sex and attractiveness of players in a trust game, at three distinct phases of the menstrual cycle. Women acted more cautiously in an investment game at the preovulatory phase, compared to the menstrual and the mid-luteal phase. Reduced willingness to trust in strangers was particularly expressed toward male players at this time. The increase of estradiol levels from menses to the preovulatory phase was negatively correlated with trust in attractive male other players, whereas the increase of prog

A complex mathematical model of the human menstrual cycle.

Despite the fact that more than 100 million women worldwide use birth control pills and that half of the world's population is concerned, the menstrual cycle has so far received comparatively little attention in the field of mathematical modeling. The term menstrual cycle comprises the processes of the control system in the female body that, under healthy circumstances, lead to ovulation at regular intervals, thus making reproduction possible. If this is not the case or ovulation is not desired, the question arises how this control system can be influenced, for example, by hormonal treatments.

The menstrual cycle and susceptibility to coriolis-induced sickness.

Survey studies on motion sickness susceptibility suggest that females tend to report greater severity in illness and higher incidence of vomiting than males. Menstruation is said to be a contributing factor. A recent study suggested that females were least susceptible to seasickness during ovulation in a "round the world" yacht race. Sixteen subjects (18-36 years old) were exposed to Coriolis cross-coupling stimulation in the laboratory. They were tested once during permenstruation (Day 1-5), ovulation (Day 12-15) and premenstruation (Day 24-28), based on a normalized 28-day cycle, in a random

Menstrual cycling and breast cancer: an evolutionary perspective.

This article attempts to bridge the disciplinary gap between evolutionary biology and clinical studies of women's health. The resulting dialogue is predicted to have useful implications for research aimed at the prevention of women's reproductive cancers. The specific focus is on the relationship between breast cancer and exposure to ovarian hormones during normal menstrual cycling. The clinician's view of normal cycling is radically different from that uncovered by evolutionary studies of noncontracepting populations. This point is illustrated by data on the Dogon of Mali, a traditional West

Role of androgens in the regulation of the human menstrual cycle.

Although previous investigations have examined the importance of androgens in the regulation of the human menstrual cycle, no consensus has been reached, due to conflicting results. We have therefore used the non-steroidal anti-androgen flutamide as a pharmacological probe to evaluate the role of androgens in the control of gonadotropin secretion in normally cycling women. Eight women were studied during control and treatment cycles, during which either placebo (as control) or flutamide (750 mg orally) was given daily. Blood was sampled every other day during the follicular and luteal phases a

Salivary oestradiol in spontaneous and stimulated menstrual cycles.

The determination of steroids in saliva provides useful information in the clinical study of various endocrine functions, and salivary progesterone concentration has been widely used for assessing corpus luteum function during the spontaneous menstrual cycle and early pregnancy. However, the determination of oestradiol in saliva (SE2) has previously been found unsatisfactory. SE2 profiles and saliva/plasma E2 ratios were established (during the different periods of the menstrual cycle) by a highly sensitive radioimmunoassay method during normal menstrual cycle. During cycles hyperstimulated fo

Menstrual cycle patterns and the risk of breast disease.

The relationship between menstrual cycle patterns and the risk of breast disease was evaluated using data from a hospital-based case-control study of 288 women with benign breast disease (203 chronic cystic diseases and 85 benign tumours), 317 with breast cancer and 602 age-matched controls with a spectrum of acute conditions unrelated to any of the established or potential risk factors for breast disease. A lifelong irregular menstrual pattern [defined as frequent occurrence of menstrual-like episodes of bleeding less than 21 or more than 35 days apart) was negatively associated with the risk

Changes in the electro-encephalogram related to the menstrual cycle.

A comparison has been made between the electro-encephalograms (EEG) recorded in the premenstrual phase and those recorded at mid-cycle in 25 healthy young women. In only 5 could no difference be discerned visually between the two records obtained from each subject. Eight premenstrual records showed a significant increase in mean alpha frequency and 17 showed an increase in mean alpha amplitude. Theta activity and mild paroxysms were twice as common in premenstrual records, as was an abnormal response to hyperventilation. These findings may correlate with subjective mood changes commonly experi

Quantitative study of uterine curettage in the menstrual cycle.

The histological appearances in 114 endometrial curettings from cases of dysfunctional bleeding have been analysed quantitatively by the method of Dunnill and Whitehead (1972) and Risdon and Keeling (1974). As applied to this type of specimen, the technique provides indices of both tubular volume and tubular surface to volume ratio. The histological diagnosis of endometrial hyperplasia is made from the increase in stromal and epithelial elements and the change in the pattern of the glands. These changes, on some occasions, can be difficult to detect. Quantitative analysis can be used to distin

The effect of menstrual cycle on laser induced hyperpigmentation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Laser induced post inflammatory hyperpigmentation PIH, is a complication seen mostly in dark skinned patients, it is not known whether giving the laser treatment at specific menstrual period days, may predispose to PIH. METHODS: Seven volunteers underwent fixed fractionated CO2 laser treatments at four predetermined days spanning the menstrual cycle. RESULTS: Two volunteers developed hypopigmentation while the rest had hyperpigmentation. In those who developed PIH, the pigmentation was most severe when done just before or after menstruation. CONCLUSIONS: Laser indu

Menstrual cycle and headache in a population sample of migraineurs.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is three times more common in women than men. There is a clinical impression that migraines are more common and severe around the time of menses. OBJECTIVES: To determine 1) the distribution of headache attacks by day of the menstrual cycle in women with migraine, 2) if the excess occurrence varies by headache type, and 3) if headache features differ by time in the menstrual cycle. METHODS: In a population-based sample, 81 menstruating women with clinically diagnosed migraine were enrolled in a 98-day diary study and completed a total of 7219 diary days. The daily diary

The relationship of menstrual cycle and pregnancy to compulsive hairpulling.

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania (TTM) or compulsive hairpulling is a cyclical disorder that presents predominantly in females. Anecdotal reports of symptom worsening in the premenstruum and during pregnancy led us to retrospectively study the role of these events in hairpulling behavior. METHODS: Questionnaires assessing demographics, current hairpulling behavior, and the reported effects of menstruation and pregnancy on urges, actual hairpulling and behavioral control were administered to clinic patients and volunteers at a hairpulling conference. Influence of menstrual cycle and gender on alprazolam pharmacokinetics.

The effects of menstrual cycle phases and gender on alprazolam pharmacokinetics were evaluated in normal volunteers. Alprazolam (1 mg) was administered to seven women during the late follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle and to eight men on one occasion. No difference in alprazolam pharmacokinetic parameters was observed during the menstrual cycle phases. Mean alprazolam clearance (+/- SD) was 0.0037 +/- 0.0009 ml/hr during the follicular phase and 0.0036 +/- 0.001 ml/hr during the luteal phase (p greater than 0.05, difference not significant).
