Youth Engagement in School Mental Health Teaming: Structure, Processes, and Outcomes of a Youth Leadership Academy to Promote Emotional Well-Being in Schools.

BACKGROUND: It is essential that leaders in education and behavioral health partner with youth to build Comprehensive School Mental Health (CSMH) systems. One mechanism to elevate youth perspectives in CSMH system building is by engaging youth as members of CSMH teams. METHOD: The current study describes the structure, process and impact of a school-based Youth Leadership Academy (YLA) that integrated youth leaders into CSMH teams with state, district, and school leaders. The YLA offered student leaders opportunities to (1) receive training and mentorship to enhance their capacities to serve

Transdiagnostic processes in university mental health: the role of psychological inflexibility, impulsivity and stress in depression and life satisfaction using structural equation modeling.

BACKGROUND: Perceived stress is a central transdiagnostic process in university mental health, yet the mechanisms linking dispositional vulnerabilities to psychological distress and positive wellbeing remain insufficiently understood. This study examined whether perceived stress mediates the associations of psychological inflexibility and impulsivity with depressive symptoms and life satisfaction among Ecuadorian university students. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 4,524 Ecuadorian university students. Psychological inflexibility, impulsivity, perceived stress, depressive symptom

Light, vitamin D and psychiatry. Role of 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3 (soltriol) in etiology and therapy of seasonal affective disorder and other mental processes.

This is a review and a prospectus of effects of vitamin D on the brain. Effects of sunlight and equivalent artificial light on physiological and behavioral processes are probably mediated, in large part, through the skin-vitamin D-endocrine system. Experimental evidence from our laboratory reveals sites of action and concomitant direct effects of 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D3 (soltriol) on brain, spinal cord, pituitary and other endocrine tissues. This appears relevant for the activation and modulation of mental and endocrine processes, particularly related to seasonal and daily biorhythms. Effects of

The effect of an intervention for organizing primary mental health care in Brazil: a study based on routine process indicators.

BACKGROUND: The "Mental Health Care in Primary Health Care (PHC)" project (SMAPS, from Portuguese) was developed in six health regions from three Brazilian states. Considering the gap and relevance of monitoring and assessing mental health (MH) care in real-world settings using data from service records, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of SMAPS on indicators of MH care process in PHC, calculated from official records available in health services. METHODS: This is a pilot study conducted between January 2022 and September 2023. The sample comprised 18 PHC units in 14 municipalities, wh

Sensory Processing Sensitivity as a trait of temperament - evolutionary, socio-cultural, biological context and relation to mental disorders.

This article presents the trait of sensory processing sensitivity (SPS), its characteristics, assessment tool and association with psychiatric disorders based on an analysis of the literature on SPS since 1997. An overview of research on SPS in several relevant contexts is presented: evolutionary/adaptive, socio-cultural, temperamental/personality, and biological, taking into account the influence of genetic factors and the activity of specific areas of the central nervous system involved in processing emotional and cognitive stimuli. High sensitivity of sensory processing is an innate trait,

Sources of strength: a process evaluation of a university-high school partnership to promote mental health protective factors.

The purpose of this manuscript was to discuss the implementation process of a student-led positive psychological and behavioral program (i.e., Sources of Strength) at a local high school to prevent opioid use and suicide behavior. Over the course of 2 years of programming, university undergraduate students worked alongside and mentored high school students to implement school-wide and focused campaigns that targeted each of the domains of the Sources of Strength wheel (i.e., mental health, family support, positive friends, mentors, healthy activities, generosity, spirituality, and medical acce

Machine learning and natural language processing to assess the emotional impact of influencers' mental health content on Instagram.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to examine, through artificial intelligence, specifically machine learning, the emotional impact generated by disclosures about mental health on social media. In contrast to previous research, which primarily focused on identifying psychopathologies, our study investigates the emotional response to mental health-related content on Instagram, particularly content created by influencers/celebrities. This platform, especially favored by the youth, is the stage where these influencers exert significant social impact, and where their analysis holds strong relevance. Anal

Mentalizing as a mechanism of change in the treatment of patients with borderline personality disorder: A parallel process growth modeling approach.

Although a number of effective psychotherapeutic treatments have been developed for borderline personality disorder (BPD), little is known about the mechanisms of change explaining the effects of these treatments. There is increasing evidence that impairments in mentalizing or reflective functioning-the capacity to reflect on the internal mental states of the self and others-are a central feature of BPD. To date, no study has directly investigated the core assumption of the mentalization-based approach to BPD, that changes in this capacity are associated with treatment outcome in BPD patients.

Distinguishing how from why the mind wanders: a process-occurrence framework for self-generated mental activity.

Cognition can unfold with little regard to the events taking place in the environment, and such self-generated mental activity poses a specific set of challenges for its scientific analysis in both cognitive science and neuroscience. One problem is that the spontaneous onset of self-generated mental activity makes it hard to distinguish the events that control the occurrence of the experience from those processes that ensure the continuity of an internal train of thought once initiated. This review demonstrates that a distinction between process and occurrence (a) provides theoretical clarity

Preparation process facilitation of a motor task through imagery practice with adolescents who have mental retardation.

The use of imagery practice to facilitate the preparation of adolescents with mild mental retardation to perform a motor task was explored. Thirty-two subjects with mental retardation and an equal number of subjects without retardation performed a response-type task that included reaction time (RT) and movement time (MT) components. Catch trials were used to manipulate the preparation levels of several experimental groups. Results suggest that with marked preparation decrements, imagery practice facilitated the execution of the RT component. Under certain conditions imagery practice also helpe

Changes in patterns of care of the mentally handicapped: implications for nurses' perceptions of their roles and hospital decision making processes.

This paper reports on the findings of a longitudinal study of a mental subnormality hospital in the North of England. The focus is upon how nurses have experienced a major change in care and treatment of residents from 1978 to 1980. We explore, through the eyes of nurses, the change in their role from a predominantly nurturing/custodial one to a mainly educational/community orientated role. The research findings demonstrate that this change has increased nurses' self-esteem and their satisfaction with important areas of their work. There is some evidence also that nurses/resident relationships

Emotional scars: limbic brain processing alterations in adults with childhood abuse across mental health disorders.

Abuse experienced during childhood and adolescence significantly influences brain development and increases the risk of psychiatric disorders later in life. However, its long-term impact on emotion processing across psychiatric conditions remains underexplored. In this functional MRI study, we examined a sample of 635 individuals with and without childhood abuse, including people with depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and healthy controls, to investigate differences in brain activation during conscious and non-conscious emotional face processing. Brain activation across regions involved in

Atypical social cognition processing in bulimia nervosa: an fMRI study of patients thinking of others' mental states.

BACKGROUND: Feeding and eating disorders are severe mental disorders that gravely affect patients' lives. In particular, patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) appear to have poor social cognition. Many studies have shown the relationship between poor social cognition and brain responses in AN. However, few studies have examined the relationship between social cognition and BN. Therefore, we examined which brain regions impact the ability for social cognition in patients with BN. METHODS: We used task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine brain res

The social domains organization of mentalizing processes in adolescents: a contribution to the conceptualization of personality function and dysfunction in young people.

BACKGROUND: We propose and evaluate a contribution to the conceptualization and assessment of personality functioning based on social domains and mentalizing hypotheses. Social domains are distinct social contexts, such as with acquaintances and friends, with differentiated expectations regarding participants' behaviours and social attributions. The capacity to organize social participation according to these expectations requires the ability, we suggest, to modulate mentalizing processes domain by domain. Drawing on evidence that social domain organization is impaired in borderline personalit

Effects of processing positive memories on posttrauma mental health: A preliminary study in a non-clinical student sample.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although trauma research and therapy primarily focus on traumatic memories, recent evidence indicates positive memory processes play a role in the etiology/maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity. We examined the effects of a novel positive memory processing technique on PTSD symptom severity, depression symptom severity, affect, posttrauma cognitions, and self-esteem. METHODS: Sixty-five trauma-exposed participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (narrating/processing vs. writing/processing two specific positive memori

[Emotional processing in adult vs adolescent patients with eating behavior disorders; emotional recognizing and the mental theory].

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: Current research has focused on the impact of difficulties in emotional recognition and regulation and deficits in social cognition (ToM) in the predisposition and maintenance of eating disorders EDs. Though most studies have assessed adult patients, few studies have examined these characteristics in adolescent patients. This study assessed difficulties in emotional recognition and ToM in 48 adult and adolescent patients (39 Anorexia Nervosa patients, and 9 Bulimia Nervosa patients) of varying degrees of severity, who were compared with a group of healthy controls using

Abnormalities of mental rotation of hands associated with speed of information processing and executive function in chronic schizophrenic patients.

AIM: Deficits in mental imagery ability have been reported in patients with schizophrenia. However, there is scarce evidence about the correlation between impairment in mental rotation and other cognitive deficits in the patients. The aim of this study was to assess mental rotation ability, along with other measures of cognitive function in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: The performance of 29 patients with schizophrenia was compared with 29 healthy controls. Mental rotation was measured with the Hand Rotation Task, and cognitive functions were measured with the Brief Assessment of Cogn
