The development and cross-validation of an MMPI typology of murderers.

A sample of 80 male offenders charged with premeditated murder were divided into five personality types using MMPI scores. A hierarchical clustering procedure was used with a subsequent internal cross-validation analysis using a second sample of 80 premeditated murderers. A Discriminant Analysis resulted in a 96.25% correct classification of subjects from the second sample into the five types. Clinical data from a mental status interview schedule supported the external validity of these types. There were significant differences among the five types in hallucinations, disorientation, hostility,

Incidence of dementia and other psychiatric conditions in the elderly: Zaragoza Study.

A prevalence study of dementia and other psychiatric disturbances in the geriatric population of Zaragoza, Spain, has been completed. Our group is now planning an incidence study. The design comprises a baseline study (cross-sectional study of prevalence) and a follow-up 2 years later of the cohort of non-demented elderly. Both studies have two phases: the first one for screening, and the second one for the clinical diagnosis. We use the Spanish versions of the Geriatric Mental State GMS-AGECAT package, the History and Aetiology Schedule (HAS) and the Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE) as s

Psychiatric disorders and mental health care among incarcerated men: A prerelease cross-sectional study in France.

BACKGROUND: The mental health of incarcerated individuals is a widely recognized public health issue, but little is known about the mental health status of the incarcerated individuals upon release. This study aimed to measure the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and substance use disorders (SUDs) among incarcerated men scheduled to be released from jail soon. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional national survey from September 2020 to September 2022 across 26 jails (selected at random) in France. Each participant was interviewed within 30 days prior to their release via a structured que

The use of a structured diagnostic interview for routine psychiatric evaluations.

The author reports the use of a structured psychiatric interview for the routine initial evaluation of all referrals to an inpatient psychiatric consultation service during a 1-year period. Acceptance of this procedure by physician examiners and by patients was high. There was evidence that the structured interview was a useful diagnostic tool and did not interfere with patient rapport. The advantages of structured interviews for routine clinical evaluations are discussed.

Is there an association between low-to-moderate alcohol consumption and risk of cognitive decline?

The authors evaluated the association of low-to-moderate alcohol consumption with risk of cognitive decline in a census-based cohort study of men and women aged ≥55 years conducted in Zaragoza, Spain (1994-1999). Participants free of dementia at baseline (N = 3,888) were examined after 2.5 and 4.5 years of follow-up. Information on alcohol intake was collected with the EURODEM Risk Factors Questionnaire and the History and Aetiology Schedule. The study endpoint was severe cognitive decline, defined as loss of ≥1 point/year on the Mini-Mental State Examination or a diagnosis of incident dementi

Classifying depression by mental state signs.

The possibility that separation of a categorical depressive disease ('melancholia') from remaining depressive disorders can be improved by assessment of mental state signs was examined in patients treated by representative Sydney psychiatrists and patients referred to a specialised mood disorders unit. A set of signs, principally assessing retardation, was derived within the two samples by principal-components and latent-class analyses. Scores were significantly correlated with clinical, DSM-III, and RDC diagnoses, and appeared independent of severity, suggesting that melancholia can be define

Evidence-based evaluation of psychiatric patients.

There has been much discussion in the literature concerning the medical evaluation of the psychiatric patient. The medical evaluation of the psychiatric patient involves obtaining a history, performing an appropriate physical and mental status examination, and testing, when indicated. This review applies the rigors of evidence-based evaluation of the medical literature that is currently available to determine when it is safe to place a patient with behavioral complaints under psychiatric care.

Prevalence of dementia in a rural Netherlands population and the influence of DSM-III-R and CAMDEX criteria for the prevalence of mild and more severe forms.

To obtain estimates of the prevalence of mild and moderate/severe dementia among people age 65 and over, applying criteria for severity of both DSM-III-R and CAMDEX, a two-stage community-based study was conducted in a rural area of the Netherlands. In the first stage, 2191 subjects (out of the target population of 2655) participated in an interview which included the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Based on MMSE score, a non-proportional random sample (n=496) was drawn for the second stage. A total of 421 subjects responded and were subsequently examined using the Cambridge Examination

Frontotemporal dementia versus vascular dementia: differential features on mental status examination.

OBJECTIVE: After Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia (VaD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are among the most common dementing illnesses. FTD may have a neuropsychological profile similar to that of VaD, and patients with these dementias may be difficult to distinguish on clinical examination. The purpose of this study was to elucidate distinct cognitive profiles of a large group of FTD and VaD patients on a brief, clinical mental status examination. DESIGN: A comparison of 39 FTD patients and 39 VaD patients on a brief, clinical mental status examination. SETTING: A Dementia Research C

Epidemiology of mental disorders in middle age and late life: conceptual issues.

One of the "uses of epidemiology" described by Morris (1) is to complete the clinical picture in describing the natural history of disease. This arena for epidemiologic inquiry is especially important in relation to psychiatric disturbances. Most adults with psychiatric complaints and symptoms, especially older adults, do not receive care in the mental health sector (2-4). Distorted views of the nature of these disturbances can result when studies sample only from those individuals who are treated by psychiatrists or other specialists (5, 6). This has led to greater interest in previously negl

Suicidality in non-treatment seeking young adults with subsyndromal gambling disorder.

Gambling Disorder is associated with elevated rates of suicidal thoughts and acts. However, virtually nothing is known about suicidality in people with subsyndromal forms of gambling disorder. A total of 174 non-treatment seeking subjects were recruited for a study of impulsivity and met criteria for a subsyndromal form of DSM-5 gambling disorder (31.0 % females; mean age = 21.7 ± 3.61 years). Subjects were categorized as being 'at risk of suicide' or 'no suicide risk' based on the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). Those with and without suicidality were compared on clinica

Application of multidimensional scaling to quantify shape in Alzheimer's disease and its correlation with Mini Mental State Examination: a feasibility study.

Today, high-resolution MRI scans are able to reveal even the fine details of brain structure. Several methods have been developed to quantify shape differences specific to scans of diseased brains. We have developed a novel method for quantifying shape information based on multidimensional scaling (MDS), a well-known statistical tool. Multidimensional scaling uses distance measures computed from pair-wise image registration of the training set. Image registration establishes spatial correspondence between scans in order to compare them in the same spatial framework. Our novel method has severa
