The impact of family interview on the relationship between medical students and their silent mentor.

The gross anatomy laboratory course often triggers significant negative emotions in medical students during dissection. While various pedagogical interventions aim to alleviate psychological burden, the fundamental question of how students' perceptions of donors evolve throughout the course remains underexplored. In our program, students participate in family interviews with donors' family members, which provide a biographical context for the donor. This study investigated the processual nature of medical students' relationship formation with their "silent mentor" and the pivotal role of famil

Validation of MENTOR Tool to Describe Bowel Dysfunction in Inpatient Rehabilitation Setting.

BACKGROUND: People living with spinal cord injury (SCI) rate neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD) as one of the biggest daily challenges. Currently, no validated clinical decision-making tool exists to guide NBD management during the acute/subacute period following SCI, a time highlighted by frequent complications and rapid clinical changes. Previously, the Monitoring Efficacy of NBD Treatment On Response (MENTOR) tool was developed to facilitate shared decision-making between the clinician and the person living with chronic SCI in bowel management. OBJECTIVES: To assess MENTOR tool validity in

A formidable scholar, friend, and mentor: Celebrating the life and work of Lonnie Snowden.

In September of 2025, the School of Social Welfare at the University of California, Berkeley-where Dr. Lonnie Snowden was a faculty member for two decades-organized a research symposium to reflect his life's work and to honor his outsized influence on the field of mental health disparities research and on the lives and careers of many mental health policy and services scholars. The symposium, and the events surrounding it, revealed a profound truth about Dr. Snowden's commitment to community psychology: Through his work, not only did he uncover important and difficult insights about disparitie

The interaction of narcissism, agreeableness and conscientiousness in entrepreneurial mentoring: Implications for learning outcomes.

The personality configuration of mentors and mentees is important in understanding mentoring outcomes. While the best mentors appear to have higher degrees of agreeableness and conscientiousness, entrepreneurs generally score lower on agreeableness and have higher degrees of narcissism, a personality trait that could be detrimental to mentoring. We investigated the interaction of narcissism with two traits from the Big Five Inventory, namely agreeableness and conscientiousness, to see how this interaction influenced learning from the relationship of mentee entrepreneurs. Our findings suggest t

Peer Mentors as Prison Volunteers: Building Bridges Between Institutions and Communities.

One creative way that Departments of Corrections offset costs is by relying on volunteers. Prison volunteers are a heterogeneous group, who provide various programs to incarcerated populations. One unique subset of prison volunteers are peer mentors, who are individuals who have experienced criminal justice interventions and have desisted from criminal activities. These mentors provide unique guidance to individuals who are currently incarcerated or are preparing for release. The current study analyzed responses from peer mentors (N = 51) and explored their motivations and experiences. Themati

SOCIUS Mentoring-A Novel Course to Encourage Students for a Career as Surgical Oncologists.

Surgical disciplines are affected by an increasing shortage of young doctors. Studies show that formerly interested students decide against a career in surgical disciplines at the end of their studies or during practical year. Measures to counteract this development are urgently needed. As a joint project between gynecology, urology, and general surgery, SOCIUS mentoring was designed to prepare and encourage students for a career in surgical oncology. The structured curriculum of SOCIUS mentoring contains six modules, including surgical skills, soft skills, mentoring, theory, clinical visitati

Evaluation of a novel tablet application for improvement in colonoscopy training and mentoring (with video).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endoscopic training can be challenging for the trainee and preceptor. Frustration can result from ineffective communication regarding areas of interest. Our team developed a novel tablet application for real-time mirroring of the colonoscopy examination that allows preceptors to make annotations directly on the viewing monitor. The potential for improvement in team proficiency and satisfaction is unknown. METHODS: The on-screen endoscopic image is mirrored to an Android tablet and permits real-time annotation directly on the in-room endoscopic image display. Preceptors ca

Health Status of Lewy Body Dementia Caregivers Predicts Psychological Response to Peer Mentoring Intervention.

Individuals with Lewy body dementia (LBD) rely on family caregivers. Caregiving demands limit caregivers' ability to attend to their own health needs, increasing their vulnerability to the psychological effects of caregiving. We previously piloted a peer mentoring intervention with experienced (mentor) and less experienced (mentee) LBD caregivers. Matched mentor-mentee dyads spoke weekly for 16 weeks, guided by an intervention handbook. LBD knowledge and attitudes towards dementia improved post-intervention. We hypothesized that caregiver health status moderates response to peer mentoring. Pos

Structured learning and mentoring: shortening the learning curve in laparoscopic common bile duct exploration.

BACKGROUND: Technological advances have made the laparoscopy procedure popular for simultaneous cholecystectomy and bile duct exploration. We aimed to assess the implementation of a structured mentorship program for training in laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE). We explored the effectiveness thereof in facilitating the learning of LCBDE as a single-stage treatment of common bile duct stones (CBD) with gallbladder in situ. METHODS: The surgical databases of a mentor (experienced in LCBDE) and a mentee (new to LCBDE) were analyzed. The analysis retrospectively compared the mento

Expanding Horizons: A Pilot Mentoring Program Linking College/Graduate Students and Teens With ASD.

A small pilot program of 9 youth 13 to 18 years old with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or Asperger's syndrome assessed the feasibility, acceptability, and potential efficacy of an individualized mentoring program. Youth met weekly for 6 months with trained young adult mentors at a local boys and girls club. Participants reported improvements in self-esteem, social anxiety, and quality of life. Participants, parents, mentors, and staff reported that the program improved participants' social connectedness. Although the pilot study was small, it provides preliminary data that me

My digital mentor: a mixed-methods study of user-GAI interactions.

INTRODUCTION: Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) has emerged as a powerful tool in online learning, offering dynamic, high-quality, and user-friendly content. While previous studies have primarily focused on GAI's short-term impacts, such as users' acceptance and initial adoption, a notable gap exists in understanding long-term usage (i.e., infusion use) and the psychological mechanisms. METHOD AND RESULTS: This study employs a two-stage mixed-methods approach to investigate users' infusion use of GAI in online learning scenarios. A semi-structured interview (N = 26) was conducted in th

Navigating the Prognosis and Functional Recovery of Short Bowel Syndrome: A Mentored Review.

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a debilitating condition resulting from extensive small bowel resection, leading to profound malabsorption, malnutrition, and complications due to reduced absorptive capacity. The remaining intestine undergoes a complex process of intestinal adaptation, characterized by varying degrees of adaptive changes among individuals. While some patients regain oral autonomy, others will go on to develop chronic intestinal failure, necessitating long-term dependence on parenteral nutrition. This review outlines the different phases of intestinal adaptation-acute, adaptation,

Five hats of effective leaders: teacher, mentor, coach, supervisor and sponsor.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Teaching, mentoring, coaching, supervising and sponsoring are often conflated in the literature. In this reflection, we clarify the distinctions, the benefits and the drawbacks of each approach. We describe a conceptual model for effective leadership conversations where leaders dynamically and deliberately 'wear the hats' of teacher, mentor, coach, supervisor and/or sponsor during a single conversation. METHODS: As three experienced physician leaders and educators, we collaborated to write this reflection on how leaders may deliberately alter their approach during dynamic conv
