The present study demonstrates that species-specific isotope tracing is an useful tool to precisely measure Hg accumulation and transformations capabilities of living organisms at concentrations naturally encountered in the environment. To that end, a phytoplanktonic green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii Dangeard (Chlamydomonadales, Chlorophyceae) was exposed to mixtures of (199)-isotopically enriched inorganic mercury ((199)IHg) and of (201)-isotopically enriched monomethylmercury ((201)CH3Hg) at a concentration range between less than 1 pM to 4 nM. Additionally, one exposure concentration of

Black-headed Gulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), a long-distance migratory bird species, serve as unique spatial integrators of mercury (Hg) pollution across their various geographical range. This study investigated the Hg exposure, Hg isotopic signatures, and trophic dynamics in the feathers of wintering Black-headed Gulls (70 adults, 28 juveniles) at Dianchi Lake in Southwest China. Results showed that adults had significantly higher concentrations of total Hg (THg: 4.4 ± 2.4 mg/kg) and methylmercury (MeHg: 3.3 ± 1.9 mg/kg) than juveniles (THg: 3.3 ± 1.6 mg/kg; MeHg: 2.3 ± 1.2 mg/kg). Mercury (Hg) is a globally distributed heavy metal with significant environmental and health implications. Along its biogeochemical cycle, Hg can transform into various chemical species, including methylmercury (MeHg), a potent neurotoxin capable of crossing biological barriers, thereby posing serious risks to the human nervous system, especially in fetuses and infants. While determination of the Hg concentration and its speciation analysis already offer valuable insights, isotopic analysis, particularly species-specific isotopic analysis, can reveal detailed information on the environmental p

Recent advancements in mercury (Hg) isotopic fractionation research have evolved from conceptual demonstrations to practical applications. However, few studies have focused on revealing fractionation fingerprinting for aqueous methylmercury (MeHg) photodegradation due to its sensitivity to natural organic matter (NOM). Here, the impact of NOM fractions with varying chemical properties on MeHg photodegradation kinetics and Hg isotope fractionation characteristics was investigated. Findings reveal that reduced NOM, containing alcohol/phenol groups, slows the degradation rate compared to the oxid

Wetlands are of a considerable environmental value as they provide food and habitat for plants and animals. Several important chemical transformations take place in wetland media, including the conversion of inorganic mercury (Hg) to monomethylmercury (MeHg), a toxic compound with a strong tendency for bioconcentration. Considering the fact that wetlands are hotspots for Hg methylation, we investigated, for the first time, Hg methylation and demethylation rates in an old growth cypress wetland at Sky Lake in the Mississippi Delta. The Sky Lake ecosystem undergoes large-scale water level fluctu

Whales accumulate mercury (Hg), but do not seem to show immediate evidence of toxic effects. Analysis of different tissues (liver, kidney, muscle) and biofluids (blood, milk) from a pod of stranded long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) showed accumulation of Hg as a function of age, with a significant decrease in the MeHg fraction. Isotopic analysis revealed remarkable differences between juvenile and adult whales. During the first period of life, Hg in the liver became isotopically lighter (δ202Hg decreased) with a strongly decreasing methylmercury (MeHg) fraction. We suggest this is

The use of species-specific isotopic tracers for inorganic and methyl mercury has allowed the simultaneous determination of the methylation and demethylation potentials of pure culture of isolated sulfate-reducing (SR) bacterial strains using low Hg species concentration levels (7 µg/L (199)Hg(II), 1 µg/L Me(201)Hg). A major advantage of the method reported here is that it can be used to follow simultaneously both the degradation of the species added but also the formation of their degradation products and thus the determination during the same incubation of the specific methylation/demethylat

Levels of mercury (Hg) and organochlorine compounds (OCs), such as PCBs and p,p'-DDE, as well as the stable isotope ratios of carbon (delta 13C) and nitrogen (delta 15N) were compared in Pacific bluefin, yellowfin, and albacore tuna taken from the southern, central, and northern regions of Japan according to tuna species and the region of origin. Levels of Hg and OCs as well as the delta 15N value were the highest in the bluefin tuna, reflecting their higher trophic position and longer life span. The average Hg concentrations tended to be higher in specimens taken in the southern region than i

Methylmercury (MeHg), a potent neurotoxin, can be formed, migrated and transformed in environmental compartments, accompanying with unique mass-dependent and mass-independent fractionation of mercury (Hg). These Hg isotope fractionation signals have great potential to probe the transformation and transport of MeHg in aquatic environments. However, the majority of studies to date have focused on total Hg isotopic composition, with less attention to the isotopic fractionation of MeHg due to technical difficulties in analysis, which severely hinders the understanding of MeHg isotopic fractionatio

The measurement of different mercury compounds in human blood can provide valuable information about the type of mercury exposure. To this end, our laboratory developed a biomonitoring method for the quantification of inorganic (iHg), methyl (MeHg), and ethyl (EtHg) mercury in whole blood using a triple-spike isotope dilution (TSID) quantification method employing capillary gas chromatography (GC) and inductively coupled dynamic reaction cell mass spectrometry (ICP-DRC-MS). We used a robotic CombiPAL(®) sample handling station featuring twin fiber-based solid-phase microextraction (SPME) injec

Results from pilot studies on colloidal phase transport of newly deposited mercury in lake water and overland runoff demonstrate that the combination of ultrafiltration, and stable isotope amendment techniques is a viable tool for the study of mercury partitioning to filterable carbon. Ultrafiltration mass balance calculations were generally excellent, averaging 97.3, 96.1 and 99.8% for dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total mercury (Hg(T)), and methylmercury (MeHg), respectively. Sub nanogram per liter quantities of isotope were measurable, and the observed phase distribution from replicate ul

Mercury (Hg) concentrations based on dietary sources have shown to predict differences in fish; however, they are usually applied at an individual scale and are rarely directed at a known trophic transfer. We combined gut content analysis and stable isotope analysis (δ15N and δ13C) to provide a quantitative estimate of Hg and selenium (Se) biomagnification in the striped marlin (Kajikia audax) and blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) food web from the southwestern Gulf of California. Hg and Se concentrations (mean ± SD; μg g-1, dw) were different among K. audax (Hg = 3.6 ± 2.1, Se = 5.5 ± 5.4) and

Total mercury concentrations ([THg]) exceed thresholds of concern in some Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) tissues from certain portions of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. We applied compound-specific stable isotope analyses of both carbon and nitrogen in amino acids from fish muscle tissue to quantify the proportional contributions of primary production sources and trophic positions of eight prey species (n = 474 total) that are part of Steller sea lion diets. Previous THg analyses of fish muscle, coupled with monomethylmercury analyses of a subset of samples, substantiated previous findin

Mercury (Hg) concentration in fish of the Gulf of the Mexico (GoM) is a major concern due to the importance of the GoM for U.S. fisheries. The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill in April 2010 in the northern GoM resulted in large amounts of oil and dispersant released to the water column, which potentially modified Hg bioaccumulation patterns in affected areas. We measured Hg species (methylmercury (MMHg) and inorganic Hg (IHg)) concentrations, and light (C, N and S) and Hg stable isotopes in muscle and liver tissues from tilefish (Lopholatilus chamaleonticeps) sampled in 2012 and 2013 along th

Algae are an entry point for mercury (Hg) into the food web. Bioconcentration of Hg by algae is crucial for its biogeochemical cycling and environmental risk. Herein, considering the cell heterogeneity, we investigated the bioconcentration of coexisting isotope-labeled inorganic (199IHg) and methyl Hg (201MeHg) by six typical freshwater and marine algae using dual-mass single-cell inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (scICP-MS). First, a universal pretreatment procedure for the scICP-MS analysis of algae was developed. Using the proposed method, the intra- and interspecies heterogeneit

Mercury (Hg) emitted from East Asian has increased the risk of Hg in China Marginal Seas for decades. However, the speciation of Hg (especially the bioavailable Hg) in these regions remains unclear. To address this problem, we analyzed total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in the sediment and porewater of Yellow sea (YS) and East China Sea (ECS) and determined the speciation of Hg using both improved BCR sequential extraction and isotope dilution (ID) techniques. Nearshore areas of YS and ECS exhibited higher THg levels in sediments and porewater, suggesting the significant contribution of t

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic contaminant of global concern and the impact on Arctic ecosystems, particularly in seabirds, is critical due to large-scale Hg transport towards polar regions and its biomagnification in marine trophic systems. While the adverse effects of Hg on reproductive processes in seabirds are established, the understanding of Hg maternal transfer pathways and their control on Hg reproductive toxicity is limited. The combination of Hg compounds speciation (inorganic mercury and monomethylmercury MMHg) and Hg stable isotope composition in the different egg compartments (yolk, albu

Mercury (Hg) isotope exchange is a common process in biogeochemical transformations of Hg in the environment, but it is unclear whether and at what rates dissolved elemental Hg(0)aq may exchange with divalent Hg(II) bound to various organic and inorganic ligands in water. Using enriched stable isotopes, we investigated the rates and dynamics of isotope exchange between 202Hg(0)aq and 201Hg(II) bound to organic and inorganic ligands with varying chemical structures and binding affinities. Time-dependent exchange reactions were followed by isotope compositional changes using both inductively cou

The lower Truckee River originates at Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada (NV), USA and ends in the terminal water body, Pyramid Lake, NV. The river has minimal anthropogenic inputs of contaminants until it encounters the cities of Reno and Sparks, NV, and receives inflows from Steamboat Creek (SBC). SBC originates at Washoe Lake, NV, where there were approximately six mills that used mercury for gold and silver amalgamation in the late 1800s. Since then, mercury has been distributed down the creek to the Truckee River. In addition, SBC receives agricultural and urban nonpoint source pollution, and

European hake (EH - Merluccius merluccius) are a commercially valuable, high trophic position marine fish species inhabiting the Northeast Atlantic Ocean (NEAO). Here, we investigated total mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation and trophic transfer dynamics, and selenium (Se) Hg interactions in EH fillets at a historic waste disposal site with a known Hg point source (n = 25) and at reference sites (n = 763) throughout Norway. Fillet concentrations of Hg (> 91 % methylmercury - MeHg) and Se, were elevated in samples from the polluted site (Hgpolluted = 0.271 ± 0.153, Hgreference = 0.114 ± 0.096, Sepoll
