BACKGROUND: This study sought to determine the efficacy and safety profile of cabozantinib in patients with advanced Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC).
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: This prospective, phase II, single-institution trial enrolled patients with platinum-failure, recurrent/metastatic MCC to receive cabozantinib 60 mg orally daily until disease progression, withdrawal from study, or severe toxicity. The primary endpoint was disease control rate. Secondary endpoints included overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and toxicity. Immunohistochemistry for VEGFR-2, MET, and HGF express

The management of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) requires multidisciplinary care for optimal patient outcomes. Radiotherapy (RT) is most commonly used as adjuvant therapy to improve locoregional control in patients with MCC who undergo surgery. Additionally, it can sometimes be used as definitive monotherapy for patients who decline or are not candidates for surgery and as palliative treatment in those with metastatic MCC. This article discusses the indications, treatment considerations, and recommended dose prescriptions for RT in the management of early- and advanced-stage disease. Considerable

We present a 27-year-old pregnant woman with Merkel cell carcinoma on the forehead. In early pregnancy, the lesion was excised as an epidermal cyst. It was only after recurrence that a diagnosis of Merkel cell carcinoma was made. Sentinel-node biopsy, excision with 2 cm margins and reconstruction with free microvascular radial forearm flap was carried out, and the patient received postoperative radiotherapy. No evidence of recurrence or disease progression was found 24 months after surgery.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive neuroendocrine tumor of the skin characterized by frequent local and regional recurrence, a high incidence of distant metastases and therefore a high mortality. Here, we report a case of an oropharyngeal metastasis of a Merkel cell carcinoma of the skin localized at the left base of the tongue causing dysphagia and the sensation of globus pharyngeus. The unusual metastatic site is presented, and diagnosis and treatment are discussed.

A 59-yr-old white man with Merkel cell carcinoma of his right leg status post extensive skin resection and chemotherapy had dilated hepatic and common bile ducts on a routine follow-up abdominal CT scan. A 1.9-cm ampullary mass was appreciated on endoscopy. Histology showed psammoma bodies and positive immunoperoxidase staining consistent with a somatostatinoma. Merkel cell tumors and somatostatinomas are extremely rare neuroendocrine tumors derived from neural crest cells. Associations have been found between somatostatinomas and other islet cell tumors with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndr

We examined the clinical and immunohistochemical features of a Merkel (neuroendocrine) cell tumor on the skin between the eyes of a 12-year-old male Yorkshire Terrier dog. The tumor was characterized by locally expansive dermal nodules composed of solid nests or clusters of epithelioid cells surrounded by fine fibrous stroma. Basal cell epithelioma, Merkel cell tumor, and extramedullary plasmacytoma were also considered as diagnoses. Because the cytoplasm of the tumor cells stained positively for cytokeratin and chromogranin A but not for immunoglobulins, the tumor was diagnosed as a Merkel ce

We have reviewed 30 reports of Merkel cell tumour and described a further five cases in order to establish a database and from this more clearly define the biology of this tumour, prognostic factors that govern outcome, and optimal management. After excision alone of the primary lesion, local recurrence occurred in 39 per cent of patients and regional failure occurred in 46 per cent. In contrast, in patients treated by excision plus prophylactic treatment (adjuvant node dissection and/or adjuvant radiation), local recurrence occurred in 26 per cent and regional failure in 22 per cent. Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive, poorly differentiated neuroendocrine cutaneous carcinoma that has rapidly increased in incidence over the past decades. Due to the significant risk of recurrence, metastasis and mortality, prompt diagnostic recognition of MCC is essential to guide timely management. Definitive diagnosis can be challenging, especially in the context of limited sampling, morphological variants, immunophenotypic aberrancy or metastatic disease of unknown primary. The differential diagnosis can include other small cell malignancies, especially extracutaneous small cell

BACKGROUND: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and aggressive neuroendocrine skin tumor with an increasing incidence in Western countries. Predominantly affecting older individuals, MCC represents less than 1% of malignant skin tumors.
OBJECTIVES: To characterize the clinical presentation, therapeutic interventions, and follow-up outcomes of MCC patients. To promote heightened clinical awareness regarding the early recognition and diagnosis of MCC.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study analyzing medical records of MCC patients at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center between 2015-2

BACKGROUND: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, aggressive skin cancer with poor outcomes. Many questions remain regarding its epidemiology.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the epidemiology of MCC.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, population-based epidemiologic study of all cases of MCC from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database between 2000 and 2021. Incidence and mortality rates were calculated using SEER∗Stat software and SEER 12 (1992-2021) and joinpoint analysis was used to assess changing trends. Cause-specific Cox regression was used for competing risk an

A man in his 70s presented to a dermatology outpatient clinic with a new rash developing over 4 weeks, associated with weakness and swallowing difficulties. He had a background of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) diagnosed 2 years prior, with a recent CT suspicious for pancreatic metastasis. On examination, there were urticated plaques involving the face, neck, back and abdomen. Gottron sign and papules, Holster sign and periorbital erythema were also present. There was proximal muscle weakness and dysphagia, requiring urgent inpatient assessment and a multidisciplinary care approach. An autoantibo

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare primary neuroendocrine skin tumor that presents as a flesh-colored or bluish-red nodule on the face, neck, or head. Long-term ultraviolet radiation exposure and Merkel cell polyomavirus are associated with MCC pathogenesis. We present a case of MCC on the right cheek in a male patient aged 87 years. Our primary goal in presenting the case is to bring MCC, which is a diagnostic challenge, to the notice of dermatologists and oncologists, as early detection and prompt treatment are important. The patient had a significant past medical history, including diabe

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare aggressive cutaneous neuroendocrine malignancy with a mortality rate of around 33%. The presence of advanced disease at the time of diagnosis is associated with poor prognosis. Twofold etiologies have been described in the pathogenesis of Merkel cell carcinoma: chronic exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light and Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPvY). MCC usually affects sun-exposed skin areas, and the presence of cutaneous nodules is the hallmark of the disease. However, there have been case reports in the literature where the diagnosis of MCC was made in the absenc

A 50-year-old man, with a history of extensive sun exposure and multiple previous non-melanoma skin cancers, presented with an asymptomatic 8-× 10-millimeter scaly, skin-colored papule on his right shoulder. Subsequent biopsy and excision revealed epidermal hyperplasia containing large atypical basaloid cells with pagetoid spread. Immunoperoxidase staining for cytokeratin-20 demonstrated a focal perinuclear dot-like pattern, and after excluding other in situ entities, a diagnosis of Merkel cell carcinoma In Situ (MCCIS) was rendered. MCCIS is a very rare entity. Although approximately 18% of M

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, aggressive neuroendocrine skin tumor that presents as an erythematous or violaceous nodule in elderly white males with an extensive history of sun exposure. Herein, we report two cases of extrafacial MCC. On exam, lesions presented as a cystic nodule and a firm plaque. We summarize tools from literature review that may aid in earlier diagnosis of MCC as well as implications of primary tumor location in prognosis. In addition, we provide an algorithm for diagnostic workup. MCC is an aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis and a high risk of local recur

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the breast is a very rare and aggressive type of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast (NECB) that typically occurs in older and immunocompromised individuals often presenting as a large palpable mass (Albright et al., 20181). Imaging features of MCC are similar to other NECBs, typically appearing as an oval circumscribed mass on mammography and as an irregular mass with increased vascularity on sonography (Jeon et al., 20142). While both MCC and primary NECB demonstrate positive immunostaining for synaptophysin, obtaining immunohistochemical stains for specific
