INTRODUCTION: One of the most common complications of endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm is type II endoleak - retrograde branch flow.
CASE REPORT: A 76-year-old man with abdominal aortic aneurysm, 7.1 cm in diameter and aneurysm of the right common iliac artery, 3.2 cm in diameter was admitted to our Department with abdominal pain. The patient had no chance of having open repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm because of high perioperative risk (cardiac ejection fraction of 23%, chronic pulmonary obstructive disease). Multislice computed angiography also revealed a large inferior

A case of post stenotic aneurysm of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) is reported. This case underlines the importance of a correct diagnosis by instrumental methods such as Duplex Scanner, CT and Arteriography, mainly when the first diagnosis is aneurysm of the abdominal aorta (AAA). Our patient showed, furthermore, the occlusion of the celic axis, of the superior mesenteric artery and of both hypogastric arteries; thus his intestinal vascularization was represented, from the gastric fundus until the rectum, only by the inferior mesenteric artery and its collateral network. The operation c

The contribution of the hypogastric and superior mesenteric arteries to inferior mesenteric artery collateral (back) pressure (r-IMA) was measured in eight patients who were free from arterial disease and were operated on for small sigmoid carcinoma. Peak and mean r-IMAs were measured after clamping both common iliac arteries and the middle colic artery together with the marginal artery of Drummond. Measurements were repeated after the injection of 50 mg papaverine into the inferior mesenteric artery. For comparison the r-IMA was normalized against the radial artery pressure to create the r-IM

A 47-year-old woman with a history of myomectomies and uterine artery embolization 15 years previously presented with increasing menorrhagia and dysmenorrhea. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated multiple enhancing fibroids, extensive uterine supply from what appeared to be patent uterine arteries, and significant supply from what appeared to be the left ovarian artery. Aortography demonstrated no ovarian supply, but extensive collateral supply from distal branches of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA), with further collateral supply from the anterior division of both internal iliac

We present the case of a 45-year-old male patient with a large aneurysm of the inferior mesenteric artery complicated by mid aortic syndrome with occlusion of the celiac trunk and superior mesenteric artery. The vascular pathology was detected by CT imaging after presentation and hospitalization with symptoms of acute cholecystitis. After resolve of the acute symptoms, the aneurysm was resected and the proximal inferior mesenteric artery interponated with a reversed saphenous vein bypass graft. Besides presenting this case we review the literature concerning the rare descriptions of inferior m

Aortoiliac occlusive disease results in varying degrees of pelvic and lower extremity arterial insufficiency. Disease limited to the infrarenal segment does not typically affect intestinal perfusion in the absence of visceral aortic or mesenteric vessel involvement. We report a rare case of a 77-year-old woman who presented with severe and incapacitating abdominal pain triggered by walking short distances (approximately 20 yards). Computed tomography angiography demonstrated that the coeliac and superior mesenteric arteries were patent, but the infrarenal aorta and both common iliac arteries w

PURPOSE: This case report investigates a rare colonic arterial variant where the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) lacks the right colic artery (RCA) and middle colic artery (MCA), with these arising from the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) via the Meandering Artery of Moskowitz (MAM). It explores surgical implications and classification challenges of such collaterals.
METHODS: An elderly South Asian female cadaver was dissected at the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. The SMA and IMA branching patterns and anastomotic networks were analysed thro

The etiology of large artery aneurysms has long been established as secondary to atherosclerotic disease and degenerative changes in the vessel walls. Less common, are aneurysms of the visceral arteries; the splanchnic and renal arteries. Rarer yet, are inferior mesenteric artery aneurysms, accounting for approximately 1% of visceral artery aneurysms. While causes range from inflammatory to congenital disease, a proposed etiology of proximal, solitary inferior mesenteric artery aneurysms, is correlated to the "jet disorder phenomenon," first described in a 1990 case report by Sugrue, and Heder

We have encountered in our anatomical practice the first case and an extremely rare second case in which the ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colons were supplied by the inferior mesenteric artery. The causes of colic artery anomalies are generally explained in conjunction with the development of the superior mesenteric artery, which is intimately related to embryonic elongation and midgut rotation. However, this embryological model was inapplicable to both cases. This difficulty motivated us to seek possible relationships with reported anomalous inferior mesenteric arteries in a

AIM: The aims of this study are to identify the natural course of inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) lymph node metastasis, and to evaluate the prognostic impact of IMA lymph node metastasis in the sigmoid colon and rectal cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From our prospectively collected database, a total of 625 patients who underwent resection with curative intent for stage III adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon and rectal cancer between June 1995 and June 2007 were selected. Patients were divided into the IMA-positive group (n = 33) and the IMA-negative group (n = 592) according to IMA lymph no

Colonic vascular ectasia is a condition characterized by dilated submucosal veins, venules, or capillaries found commonly in patients with lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage. We present a case of colorectal ectasia associated with ischemia and an inferior mesenteric artery aneurysm. These pathologic findings may be the result of the vascular ectasia and may add to the natural history of this condition.

Reimplantation of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) at the time of aortic surgery has been advocated to prevent colon ischemia in patients deemed to have inadequate perfusion of the left colon. The purpose of this study was to determine whether IMA reimplantation is globally protective against colon necrosis. We reviewed the medical records of all patients who were diagnosed with colon ischemia after aortic surgery during a 10-year period. Cases were indexed from the institution's operative database and from the vascular morbidity and mortality registry. Ten patients (eight men, two women;

The aim of this study is to determine vertebral levels of the coeliac trunk, the superior mesenteric artery, and the inferior mesenteric artery originated from the abdominal aorta and to calculate the distance measurements between these arteries and between these arteries and the aortic bifurcation by multidetector computed tomography angiography technique. It was determined that the nine different vertebral levels of the coeliac trunk, the nine different vertebral levels of the superior mesenteric artery, and the eleven different vertebral levels of the inferior mesenteric artery. The distanc

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) with portal-superior mesenteric vein (PV/SMV) resection and reconstruction is increasingly performed. We aimed to introduce a safe and effective surgical approach and share our clinical experience with LPD with PV/SMV resection and reconstruction.
METHODS: We reviewed data for the patients undergoing LPD and open pancreaticoduodenectomy (OPD) combined with PV/SMV resection and reconstruction at the First Hospital of Jilin University between April 2021 and May 2023. The inferior-posterior "superior mesenteric artery-first" approach was use

The perfusion pressure in the marginal artery of the descending colon was measured continuously at laparotomy in eight patients and the effect of sudden occlusion of the inferior mesenteric artery recorded. Three patients with ulcerative colitis, all in their early 30s, and five elderly patients with colonic or rectal carcinoma were studied. In all patients occlusion caused an initial and marked pressure drop, which remained reduced at a critically low level in two of the elderly patients. Such a reduction in perfusion pressure is probably still insufficient to interfere with the nourishment o

BACKGROUND: Anastomotic leakage after restorative rectal excision may develop from ischemia associated with inadequate blood flow in the marginal artery-dependent colon.
STUDY DESIGN: We have used laser Doppler flowmetry to measure blood flow change during mobilization of the sigmoid colon before excision of the sigmoid colon or rectum in 26 patients and proximal to the colorectal anastomosis during the first five postoperative days in five patients.
RESULTS: There was a significant (p < 0.005) fall (median, 50 percent interquartile range, 41 to 86 percent) in sigmoid colon serosal flow afte
