A 20-year-old female patient with severe maxillary crowding and skeletal Class III malocclusion was successfully treated using an enhanced pendulum appliance. Camouflage treatment was chosen because the patient refused surgical intervention. Detailed examination and analysis revealed that labial inclination of the maxillary anterior teeth could provide the alignment space necessary after tooth extraction in the maxillary arch but it would not be beneficial esthetically and would increase the moment perpendicular to the tooth long axis as well as increase the risk of bone dehiscence. Therefore,

Controlling the eruption and development of dentitions is fundamental for a good oral health. The early diagnosis and adequate treatment of occasional developmental disorders are essential to achieve occlusal, functional and esthetic harmony. Abnormality is the term used for classification of alterations and is the most common developmental anomaly in humans. Even though several factors causing tooth malformations have been identified, many are still partially understood, thus requiring a more thorough study. Anyway, the available knowledge provides bases to attempt the early diagnosis of toot

Autotransplantation of mandibular third molars in a precocious phase of development is indicated when a substitute for adjacent compromised or missing molars is needed, and when mesial movements of the posterior teeth, the resultant loss of space, and overeruption of opposing teeth and consequent changes in the occlusion must be avoided. Provided that the apices of the mandibular third molar are immature, the immediate replacement of a lost or compromised tooth usually ensures a good outcome. Transplantation of third molars helps to maintain alveolar bone and enables endosseous implantation wi

This study evaluated the amount and depth of root resorption associated with varying concentrations and frequencies of injectable, exogenous prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in conjunction with orthodontic tooth movement in rats. The sample consisted of 155 maxillary right and left first molars from 88, 8-week old, male Sprague-Dawley rats. The animals were divided into three control groups and two experimental groups. The control animals were divided into one nonappliance and two appliance groups. The experimental animals were divided into 2- and 4-week experimental time periods that were further subd

INTRODUCTION: The orthodontic application of a force or moment leads to a strain distribution in the periodontal ligament. The corresponding local deformation at the interface periodontal ligament-alveolar bone causes a distribution of normal and shearing tension that is thought to be the local stimulus for bone remodeling leading to orthodontic tooth movement. Although researchers have examined initial tooth movement and the biomechanical properties of the periodontal ligament, few have reported human, in-vivo studies. For such examinations, very small tooth displacements must be measured wit

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of rapid canine distalization through distraction of the periodontal ligament after reducing interseptal bone resistance.
METHODS: Twenty canines in 11 patients who needed first premolar extractions were involved. A tooth-borne, custom-made distractor was bonded right after the first premolar extraction and the interseptal bone resistance reduction. Three days post-operatively, the distractor was activated 0.1 mm three times a day. Orthodontic models, panoramic radiographs, periapical radiographs, electrical vitality test were assessed pre- and post distra

It is suggested that lingually-positioned lower lateral incisors in young children are anatomically correct and not a symptom of crowding. Primary canines with intact periodontal attachments have an important role to play as proprioceptors to encourage growth of the alveolar arch. Extractions of primary cuspids would deprive the alveolus of important growth stimuli. Clinical evidence suggests that serial extraction is counter-productive. The early extraction of primary cuspids will invariably result in crowding of the permanent cuspids. It is a common belief that serial extraction corrects the

This article reports the successful treatment of a patient with the unusual occurrence of bilateral and multiple dentigerous cysts of the premolars. One impacted mandibular premolar was moved by traction orthodontically. On the opposite side, the impacted premolar was autotransplanted after space was created through mesial movement and hemi-sectioning of the neighboring molars. The impacted maxillary premolar was extracted. Miniscrews were additionally used for anchorage reinforcement to prevent unintended counteractions and solve the problem of space management after autotransplantation. We a

BACKGROUND The proximity between the maxillary sinus and dental roots may impede orthodontic tooth movement. This study aimed to explore the relationship between the maxillary sinus wall (MSW) and maxillary canines and posterior teeth using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIAL AND METHODS CBCT images (317) were examined for whether the mesial, distal, buccal, and palatal surfaces of the examined root contacted the MSW, and the contact distance of each root surface with the MSW was measured. The effects of age and sex were analyzed using logistic regression and linear regression analy

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we investigated whether it is possible to orthodontically move a tooth into an adjacent bone defect previously filled with xenogenic grafting material, with emphasis on the reactions of the tooth roots and adjacent tissues.
METHODS: Six minipigs were used. In each animal, 4 defects were created at the mesial aspects of the maxillary and mandibular first permanent molars; the defects on the right were filled with the xenograft (test side), and the opposite defects (control side) were filled with blood clots and allowed to heal spontaneously. Three months later, ort

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the use of a stainless-steel fixed retainer for post-orthodontic retention in patients with labiolingual alveolar bone resorption in the mandibular anterior segment.
METHODS: Three mandibular anterior segment models (with or without labial or lingual alveolar bone resorption) with 0.5-mm-diameter retainers bonded to all teeth were constructed. Two occlusion schemes were simulated: a 285.3 N force applied to four mandibular incisors (incisor biting) and a 93 N force applied to the left canine (laterotrusion). The tooth displacement and stress distributio

Premature loss of a permanent first molar can lead to functional impairment, food impaction, occlusal instability, and compromised masticatory efficiency. While implant-supported rehabilitation is frequently used to restore missing posterior teeth, orthodontic space closure may provide a conservative alternative in selected patients. This case report describes the management of a 22-year-old healthy female patient who presented with a three-year history of an untreated mandibular right first molar edentulous space following the extraction of tooth #30 at the age of 19. The patient reported rec

The alveolar bone has a unique capacity to follow the teeth's movements. It is formed around erupting teeth and their periodontal ligaments: the more the teeth have erupted, the larger the alveolar process. Throughout life the teeth erupt and migrate in an occlusal and mesial direction to compensate for attrition, an evolutionary trait. After tooth extraction, the alveolar process is resorbed to varying degrees. The mandibular alveolar bone mirrors skeletal bone condition. Due to fast bone turnover (which is the fastest in the whole skeleton), low bone mass and increased fracture risk may firs

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have revealed that orthodontic force affects dental pulp via the rupture of blood vessels and vacuolization of pulp tissues. We hypothesized that pulp tissues express inflammatory cytokines and regulators of odontoclast differentiation after excess orthodontic force. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of tensile force in human pulp cells and to measure inflammatory root resorption during tooth movement in pulpless rat teeth.
METHODS: After cyclic tensile force application in human pulp cells, gene expression and protein concentration of mac

The third and final article in this series examines the effect of infraocclusion on the midline of the mandibular dental arch. From clinical observation, a shift in the dental midline to the side affected by infraocclusion seemed very common, and this could be explained within the terms of the hypothesis proposed in the first article. A method was devised on a panoramic radiograph to define and to distinguish the anatomic (skeletal) midline and the dental midline. This confirmed the existence of a dental shift to the affected side. The hemiarch length of each side was measured on the film, fro

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to analyze 3-dimensional (3D) tooth movement patterns during mandibular molar intrusion using finite element analysis, with a particular focus on the effects of temporary skeletal anchorage devices positioning and archwire constriction bend (ACB).
METHODS: A 3D finite element model of the mandibular dentition was constructed. Intrusive forces of 2.0 N were applied to the archwire either mesial (M6 model) or distal (D6 model) to the first molar, whereas bilateral forces of 1.0 N were applied in the MD6 model. An ACB force of 1.0 N was applied lingually to both en
