Effects of photoperiod, the pineal gland and the gonads on agonistic behavior in female golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Four studies were conducted to determine the role of photoperiod, the pineal gland and the gonads in the regulation of intrasex agonistic behavior in female hamsters. In the first experiment animals maintained under Long or Short photoperiods were tested in same or opposite photoperiod pairs. Under both testing conditions, Short-day animals tended to exhibit a higher ratio of offensive to defensive behaviors, which was due primarily to a reduced level of defensive behavior in Short-day groups. In the second experiment animals under Long and Short photoperiods were tested following sham surgery

Pulmonary Emphysema Impairs Male Reproductive Physiology Due To Testosterone and Oxidative Stress Imbalance in Mesocricetus auratus.

This study evaluated whether pulmonary emphysema affects sperm quality, male reproductive organs, and testosterone levels in adult male hamsters. Mesocricetus auratus males (130-150 g) were subdivided into a control group (C group) and an emphysema group (E group). The C group received an intratracheal instillation of saline solution (0.3 mL/100 g of body weight), and the E group received papain (40 mg/100 g of body weight). After 60 days, the biometric, pulmonary, and reproductive parameters of each group were evaluated. The E group developed pulmonary emphysema, which decreased body weight a

Seco-limonoid derived from Raputia heptaphylla promotes the control of cutaneous leishmaniasis in hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

The rational search of novel bioactive molecules against pathogens with immunomodulatory activity is presently one of the most significant approaches to discover and design new therapeutic agents for effective control of infectious diseases, such as the infection caused by Leishmania parasites. In the present study, we evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of the recently characterized immunomodulatory compound 11α,19β-dihydroxy-7-acetoxy-7-deoxoichangin, a seco-limonoid derived from the bark of Raputia heptaphylla (Pittier) using: (1) peritoneal macrophages and (2) Mesocricetus auratus hamsters

Entamoeba histolytica: induction of cyclooxygenase-2 expression during amoebic liver abscess formation in hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Experimental amoebic liver abscess in hamsters curses with an increase in both, systemic levels of prostaglandin E2 (PGE(2)) and local cyclooxygenase activity in liver microsomes. The cellular source of PGE(2) and the isoform of cyclooxygenase responsible are not completely evidenced. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein and gene expression were demonstrated on macrophages and polymorphonuclear cells as a result of Entamoeba histolytica infection in hamsters at 2, 4, and 7 days postinfection by immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR. E. histolytica trophozoites located in the lesion showed a strong posit

Daily rhythms of follicle-stimulating hormone in adult anestrous and prepubertal female Turkish hamsters (Mesocricetus brandti).

We tested the hypothesis that daily FSH surges are correlated with the anestrous condition in adult Turkish hamsters. Blood samples were collected from anestrous hamsters on short (12L:12D) and long photoperiods (16L:8D) by cardiac puncture. Both photoperiod-induced anestrous (PIA) and spontaneously anestrous adult Turkish hamsters had a daily rhythm of FSH secretion with maximum hormone concentrations occurring late in the afternoon. We also hypothesized that daily FSH and progesterone surges are correlated with the reproductive response to short photoperiod in prepubertal female Turkish hams

Immunosuppression-induced susceptibility of inbred hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) to lethal-disease by lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection.

The role of the immune response in the pathogenesis of lethal and non-lethal lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV)-infections of young adult Syrian golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) of different strains was examined using immunosuppressive treatment with cyclophosphamide or with whole-body gamma-irradiation. In all hamsters, the LCMV strains, WE and Armstrong (ARM), caused systemic infections and induced comparable serum LCMV-antibody titers. However, lethal wasting-disease occurred which was hamster-strain and virus-strain dependent. With WE-inocula, MHA and PD4 inbred hamsters were

Immunological evidence of chemotherapeutic action of mebendazole against Ancylostoma ceylanicum (Looss, 1911) in hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

The immunological responses in hamsters during treatment with mebendazole against Ancylostoma ceylanicum are studied. Indirect haemagglutination (IHA) counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP), passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA), foot pad swelling for immediate (ITH) and delayed (DTH) types of hypersensitivities were employed for measuring the responses. Serum antibody which was 1:32 before treatment increased to the maximum of 1:512 (control 1:128) on the 10th day and it declined subsequently. The CIEP test was positive for 10 days and then became negative. The PCA test was positive throughout the

Efficacy of UV-irradiated larval vaccine of Ancylostoma ceylanicum (Looss, 1911) in golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

A vaccination trial in golden hamsters with UV-irradiated infective larvae of Ancylostoma ceylanicum was attempted. One oral vaccination of hamsters with 100 infective larvae irradiated by means of UV-tube (390 nm) at different time intervals induced the development of resistance. As the time exposure of irradiation was increased, there was a corresponding decrease in the subsequent worm establishment. A high level of protection afforded by larvae irradiated for 15 min UV-exposure was recorded giving 99.0% and 95.0% worm reduction against the challenge doses of 100 and 1000 normal larvae respe

Body weight as a determinant of clinical evolution in hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) infected with Leishmania (Viannia) panamensis.

The clinical outcome of infection with Leishmania species of the subgenus Viannia in hamster model (Mesocricetus auratus) has shown to be different depending on experimental protocol. Body weight has been a relevant determinant of the clinical outcome of the infection in hamsters with visceral leishmaniasis but its importance as a clinical parameter in hamsters with cutaneous leishmaniasis is not known. In this study, the clinical evolution of infection with L. (V) panamensis was evaluated in juvenile and adult male hamsters during 11 weeks by comparing clinical parameters such as attitude, te

Patterns of immunocytochemically detected Z-DNA in the recrudescing testicular epithelium of the Turkish hamster (Mesocricetus brandti).

Z-DNA has been considered a labile but essential structural form of DNA in recombination and gene expression, two significant activities in mammalian seminiferous epithelium. The present study has utilized the recrudescing testes of Mesocricetus brandti to study in detail the potential Z-DNA sites in specific testicular cell types as detected by an immunoprobe. Testicular regression was physiologically induced by modifying environmental photoperiods and/or temperature. Partial atrophy of seminiferous epithelium occurred in all experimental groups but Sertoli cells persisted throughout regressi

Developing testicular microvasculature in the golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus: a model for angiogenesis under physiological conditions.

The ultrastructure of the developing testicular microvasculature in the testes of immature (3, 5, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25, 30 and 35 days old) golden hamsters was examined and compared to the testicular microvasculature of adult (3 months old) hamsters. In addition, in 16- to 35-day-old hamsters vascular permeability was studied after localization of injected horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Angiogenic processes were present in the testes of all examined immature hamsters and were most conspicuous between 8 and 25 days of age. These processes were absent in the testes of 3-month-old hamsters. On da

Day-night rhythm of 5-methoxytryptamine biosynthesis in the pineal gland of the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus).

5-Methoxytryptamine is a potent agonist of presynaptic 5-hydroxytryptamine autoreceptors modulating serotonin release in the central nervous system. This methoxyindole can be synthesized in the pineal gland, but its presence in vivo is still controversial, probably because of rapid catabolism by monoamine oxidase. An improved high-pressure liquid chromatography method, with coulometric detection, has been developed for the simultaneous measurement of melatonin, 5-methoxytryptamine, 5-methoxytryptophol and 5-methoxyindolacetic acid. We have demonstrated a day-night rhythmicity in the amount of

Effect of external factors on gonadal activity and body mass of male golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Effects of photoperiod, temperature and food and water availability on body and testicular mass of golden hamsters were investigated. Lack of water or food inhibited body growth. Short photoperiod (LD 8:16) enhanced body growth in males fed 'poor diet' but it had no effect in animals on 'high quality diet'. Cold exposure diminished body growth in animals with access to water but not in those deprived of water. It is suggested that lowered motor activity is mainly responsible for body mass gain of animals kept under the short photoperiod. All stressful factors (water deprivation, 'poor diet' or

Gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone reduces sexual motivation but not lordosis behavior in female Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Reproductive success is maximized when female sexual motivation and behavior coincide with the time of optimal fertility. Both processes depend upon coordinated hormonal events, beginning with signaling by the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neuronal system. Two neuropeptidergic systems that lie upstream of GnRH, gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH; also known as RFamide related peptide-3) and kisspeptin, are potent inhibitory and excitatory modulators of GnRH, respectively, that participate in the timing of the preovulatory luteinizing hormone (LH) surge and ovulation. Whether these n

Exposure to Dim Light at Night Impairs Photoperiodic and Metabolic Gene Expression in Syrian Hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Rapid urbanisation has significantly increased nighttime illumination, thereby affecting the photoperiod perception of seasonal-breeding animals. In this study, we investigated the effect of dim light (0.0064 W/m2) combined with an extended photoperiod (15 L:9D/day) on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis in adult (~ 4 months old) Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). Two groups of male animals were used: group one (LD; n = 5) was exposed to long photoperiod (15 L:9D), while group two (dLD; n = 5) experienced the same photoperiod with added dim nocturnal light (0.0064 W/m2) for 4 we

Photoperiodic modulation of ovarian metabolic, survival, proliferation and gap junction markers in adult golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus.

Female reproductive physiology is greatly dependent on tight regulation of metabolic and survival factors. Photoperiod regulates female reproductive rhythms but very less information exists explaining whether photoperiod could modulate thyroid hormone homeostasis, metabolic/energy parameters along with survival, proliferation and gap junction proteins in the ovary of a long-day breeder, Mesocricetus auratus. Adult female hamsters were exposed to different photoperiodic regimes i.e., critical photoperiod (CP; 12.5L:11.5D), short photoperiod (SP; 8L:16D) and long photoperiod (LP; 16L:8D) for 12

Experimental yellow fever virus infection in the Golden Hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). I. Virologic, biochemical, and immunologic studies.

This report describes the clinical laboratory findings in golden hamsters experimentally infected with yellow fever (YF) virus. An accompanying paper describes the pathologic findings. Following intraperitoneal inoculation of a virulent strain of YF virus, hamsters developed a high-titered viremia (up to 109/mL) lasting 5--6 days and abnormal liver function tests. YF hemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies appeared 4 or 5 days after infection, often while viremia was still present. The mortality rate in YF-infected hamsters was variable, depending on the virus strain and the age of the animals.
