Integrated effects of bioturbation, warming and sea-level rise on mobility of sulfide and metalloids in sediment porewater of mangrove wetlands.

Global warming and sea-level rise exert profound impacts on coastal mangrove ecosystems, where widespread benthic crabs change sediment properties and regulate material cycles. How crab bioturbation perturbs the mobilities of bioavailable arsenic (As), antimony (Sb) and sulfide in sediment-water systems and their variability in response to temperature and sea-level rise is still unknown. By combining field monitoring and laboratory experiments, we found that As was mobilized under sulfidic conditions while Sb was mobilized under oxic conditions in mangrove sediments. Crab burrowing greatly enh

Metal/metalloid and phosphorus characteristics in porewater associated with manganese geochemistry: A case study in the Jiulong River Estuary, China.

Sediment porewater can be an important source of contaminants in the overlying water, but the mechanisms of metal(loid) and phosphorus (P) remobilization remain to be investigated. In this study, high-resolution dialysis (HR-Peeper) and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) samplers were used to determine the porewater dissolved iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), vanadium (V), selenium (Se), arsenic (As), P and DGT-Labile S in coastal sediments in the Jiulong River Estuary (JRE), China. The results showed that high concentrations of dissolved Mn, Se and P were present in

Deep-sea tailing discharges as a legacy source of trace metals and metalloids in sediments from the Cassidaigne canyon (Mediterranean Sea).

The discharge of deep-sea tailings from the Gardanne alumina plant into the Cassidaigne Canyon (Mediterranean Sea) for nearly five decades generated extensive bauxite residue deposits. This study investigated whether these historical deposits act as a secondary source of dissolved trace metals to bottom waters following the cessation of solid discharge in 2015. Sediment cores collected at five stations in 2016 were analyzed for porewater and overlying-water concentrations of Al, trace elements and early diagenetic tracers (Mn, Fe, DOC). Stations located closest to the discharge area (U03, SR1)

Metals and metalloids signatures in early pregnancy suggest cadmium and arsenic as major mixture components associated with gestational diabetes mellitus risk.

Pregnancy is a vulnerable window for environmental pollutant exposure, yet the contribution of metals and metalloids (metal(loid)s) to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) remains insufficiently characterized. This prospective cohort study evaluated whether early-pregnancy urinary metal(loid)s were associated with subsequent GDM and explored their predictive and mechanistic value. Among 1,201 pregnant women included in Guilin, China, nine urinary metal(loid)s were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. GDM was diagnosed by a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test at 24-28 gestation

Modulation of the PD-1/PD-L1 axis and tumor immunity by metals and metalloids: mechanistic insights and human health implications.

Immune checkpoints maintain immune homeostasis, but their dysregulation can impair antitumor immunity and promote tumor immune evasion. Accumulating evidence indicates that metals and metalloids are important modulators of immune checkpoint signaling; however, their underlying mechanisms and broader implications for human health have not been systematically synthesized. In this review, we conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus through March 2026 to identify peer-reviewed studies examining metal- and metalloid-associated changes in immune checkpoint expression or

Bioaccumulation of Heavy Metals and Metalloids in Tissues of Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) in the Campania Region, Southern Italy: A Pilot Study.

Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are reliable bioindicator species for assessing environmental pollution. In this pilot study, we measured concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) in liver, diaphragm, and testicular tissues from wild boars collected across seven districts of Avellino province (liver/diaphragm: n = 87; testicles: n = 50). Pb reached its highest median value in the diaphragm (0.43 mg/kg w.w.; maximum 14.80 mg/kg), while Cd showed a pronounced affinity for hepatic tissue (median 0.15 mg/kg; maximum 0.62 mg/kg). Zn was the most abun

Oxidative Stress-Related Metabolomic Alterations in Pregnancy: Evidence from Exposure to Air Pollution, Metals/Metalloid, and Tobacco Smoke.

Developmental programming, shaped by environmental and lifestyle stressors during prenatal life, is increasingly recognized as a major contributor to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) later in life. Oxidative stress, one of key mechanisms linking these stressors to fetal metabolomic reprogramming and disease pathogenesis, leaves measurable metabolomic signatures that reflect disrupted redox balance. Alterations in glucose, lipid, and amino acid metabolism and antioxidant response could reveal the main pathways driving NCD development. This review summarizes epidemiological studies that have inv

Associations of non-essential metal/metalloids and their mixture with liver function in Chinese older adults: the mediating roles of lipid profiles.

The liver is vulnerable to damage from environmental pollutants, but evidence on the effects of non-essential metal/metalloid (NEM) mixture on liver function and their mechanisms remains limited. The study aimed to explore the correlations between individual NEMs and their combinations with liver function, and the mediating roles of lipid profiles. The research involved 2642 individuals aged 60 and older in China. Urine concentrations of arsenic (As), cesium (Cs), barium (Ba), thallium (Tl), and cadmium (Cd) were analyzed using ICP-MS. Liver function was assessed based on the levels of alanine

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and Trypanothione reductase interaction protects Leishmania donovani from metalloid mediated oxidative stress.

Exploration of metabolons as viable drug target is rare in kinetoplastid biology. Here we present a novel protein-protein interaction among Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (LdG6PDH) and Trypanothione reductase (LdTryR) of Leishmania donovani displaying interconnection between central glucose metabolism and thiol metabolism of this parasite. Digitonin fractionation patterns observed through immunoblotting indicated localisation of both LdG6PDH and LdTryR in cytosol. In-silico and in-vitro interaction observed by size exclusion chromatography, co-purification, pull-down assay and spectrofluori

Reactions with a Metalloid Tin Cluster {Sn10[Si(SiMe3)3]4}(2-): Ligand Elimination versus Coordination Chemistry.

Chemistry that uses metalloid tin clusters as a starting material is of fundamental interest towards understanding the reactivity of such compounds. Since we identified {Sn10[Si(SiMe3)3]4}(2-) 7 as an ideal candidate for such reactions, we present a further step in the understanding of metalloid tin cluster chemistry. In contrast to germanium chemistry, ligand elimination seems to be a major reaction channel, which leads to the more open metalloid cluster {Sn10[Si(SiMe3)3]3}(-) 9, in which the Sn core is only shielded by three Si(SiMe3)3 ligands. Compound 9 is obtained through different routes

{Sn9[Si(SiMe3)3]2}2-: a metalloid tin cluster compound with a Sn9 core of oxidation state zero.

The disproportionation reaction of the subvalent metastable halide SnCl proved to be a powerful synthetic method for the synthesis of metalloid cluster compounds of tin. Now we present the synthesis and structural characterization of the anionic metalloid cluster compound [Sn(9)[Si(SiMe(3))(3)](2)](2-)3 where the oxidation state of the tin atoms is zero. Quantum chemical calculations as well as Mössbauer spectroscopic investigations show that three different kinds of tin atoms are present within the cluster core. Compound 3 is highly reactive as shown by NMR investigations, thus being a good s

Toxic Metals and Metalloids Exposure and the Gut-Cardiometabolic Axis: A Narrative Review of Microbiome Dysbiosis, Gut Barrier Dysfunction, and Metabolic Inflammation.

Toxic elements and metalloids exposure is an important environmental contributor to cardiometabolic disease, yet the gut-mediated mechanisms linking toxic elements to systemic metabolic and vascular injury remain incompletely understood. Lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury can enter the gastrointestinal tract through contaminated food, water, dust, smoking, seafood, and occupational sources, allowing direct interaction with the intestinal lumen, epithelial barrier, immune system, and gut microbiome. This narrative review examines the gut-cardiometabolic axis as a mechanistic framework connecti

Volatile organic compounds and metals/metalloids exposure in children after e-waste control: Implications for priority control pollutants and exposure mitigation measures.

The decade-long effort to control e-waste in China has made significant progress from haphazard disposal to organized recycling, but environmental research suggests that exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and metals/metalloids (MeTs) still poses plausible health risks. To investigate the exposure risk faced by children and identify corresponding priority control chemicals, we evaluated the carcinogenic risk (CR), non-CR, and oxidative DNA damage risks of VOCs and MeTs exposure in 673 children from an e-waste recycling area (ER) by measuring urinary exposure biomarker levels. The ER

"Testicular concentrations of metals and metalloids in dogs from the 'Land of Fires' (Campania Region, Italy): A preliminary morphological, chemical and molecular study".

In Campania Region, an area known as the 'Land of Fires', has been described as an open-air dump due to the illegal discharges of toxic substances. The dog (Canis familiaris) represents a useful sentinel for tracking environmental risks. To this aim, fifty male stray dogs were enrolled, and testicular samples were processed for histological, chemical and molecular analyses. The animals were classified into four groups, from normal spermatogenesis to intratubular seminoma. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was conducted to assess metal and metalloid concentrations. Collagen

A Dataset for Three-Dimensional Distribution of 39 Elements Including Plant Nutrients and Other Metals and Metalloids in the Soils of a Forested Headwater Catchment.

Quantification and evaluation of elemental distribution in forested ecosystems are key requirements to understand element fluxes and their relationship with hydrological and biogeochemical processes in the system. However, datasets supporting such a study on the catchment scale are still limited. Here we provide a dataset comprising spatially highly resolved distributions of 39 elements in soil profiles of a small forested headwater catchment in western Germany () to gain a holistic picture of the state and fluxes of elements in the catchment. The elements include both plant nutrients and othe
