The Tessier sequential extraction method was employed to investigate the changes in heavy metals speciation (Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Pb, Ni, Cd and Cr) during water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) composting. Results showed that, the contents of total metals concentration were increased during the composting process. The largest proportion of metals was found in the residual fraction which was in more stable form and is consequently considered unavailable for plant uptake. Reducible and oxidizable fractions of Ni, Pb and Cd were not found in all trials during water hyacinth composting. The concentrati

Autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are developmental brain disorders with complex, obscure, and multifactorial etiology. Our recent clinical survey of patient records from ASD children under the age of 6 years and their age-matched controls revealed evidence of abnormal markers of thiol metabolism, as well as a significant alteration in deposition of several heavy metal species, particularly arsenic, mercury, copper, and iron in hair samples between the groups. Altered thiol metabolism from heavy metal toxicity may be responsible for the biochemical alterations in transketolase, and are

The fate and effects of selected heavy metals were examined in sediment from a restored salt marsh. Sediment cores densely covered with Spartina patens were collected and kept either un-amended or artificially amended with nickel (Ni) under standardized greenhouse conditions. Ni-amendment had no significant effect on the fate of other metals in sediments, however, it increased root uptake of the metals. Metal translocation into the shoots was small for all metals. Higher Ni concentrations in plants from amended cores were accompanied by seasonal reductions in plant biomass, photosynthetic capa

Henna (Lawsonia inermis, family Lythraceae) is a shrub cultivated in India, Sri Lanka and North Africa and contains the active dye lawsone (2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone). Henna dye is obtained from the dried leaves, which are powdered and mixed with oil or water and are used to prepare hair and body dyes. Temporary henna tattoos are readily available worldwide, last on the skin for several weeks and offer a self-limited, convenient alternative to a permanent tattoo. The addition of para-phenylenediamine (PPD), which is widely recognised as a sensitizer, increases the risk of allergic contact d

To further characterize the nature of the regulatory metal-binding sites of the rat P2X(4) receptor, several transition heavy metals were tested to examine their ability to mimic the facilitator action of zinc or the inhibitory action of copper. cDNA coding for the rat P2X(4) receptor was injected into Xenopus laevis oocytes; the two-electrode voltage-clamp technique was used to measure and quantify the ATP-evoked currents in the absence or presence of the metals. Cadmium facilitated the ATP-gated currents in a reversible and voltage-independent manner; maximal potentiation occurred within les

Heavy metal concentrations (total and organic Hg, Ti, Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) were determined in the muscle, liver and kidney of 36 dolphins stranded on the French Atlantic coast between 1977 and 1990: 29 common dolphins Delphinus delphis, five bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus and two striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba. Total Hg concentration in the liver increased with age, while relative methylmercury concentration decreased, reflecting the existence of a slow demethylation process. To a lower extent, a similar pattern was observed in the kidney and muscle. No age-related increase w

A group of 120 male workers, employed in copperworks (mean age = 41.5 years; mean exposure duration = 17,9 years) at workposts with the highest level of exposure to lead, were covered by the study. Blood levels of the following heavy metals were measured in all workers: Pb, Cd, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ca, Mg as well as concentrations of FEP and GSH, SOD activity in erythrocytes, parameters of lipid metabolism: total cholesterol, HDL2- HDL3-cholesterol, triglycerides, lipid peroxides (LPO), and lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) activity. Mean blood lead level accounted for 251,86 micrograms/l, an

Aluminium in water supplies derives from natural sources and from the use of Al2(SO4)3 in water treatment. Heavy metals such as Pb, Cu, Zn and Cd can be added to water from pipework and solder. However, it is apparent that AI and other metals in potable waters can derive from deposits on pipe walls which can be subsequently mobilised when the supply and/or treatment process is changed. Concentrations of Al in domestic supply water of the Llanbrynmair area have been shown to increase from 1 μg to 50 μg L(-1) during its 18 km journey along the water main. Similarly, Pb concentrations in a public

Whole samples of Palaemon elegans Rathke, 1837 and eggs of Paracentrotus lividus Lamarck, 1816 were collected on the coast of Ras Beirut, Lebanon in the summer and fall of 1977 and the spring of 1978. All were analysed for lead, cadmium, copper and other heavy metals. Lead concentrations in both the prawns and sea urchin eggs appeared to be highest in the summer and lowest in the spring, whereas cadmium was low in all seasons with only a few elevated readings. The strongest tendency towards seasonal variation was seen in the copper levels of the prawns, which were high in summer, much lower in

Industrial wastewater containing heavy metals, such as Cd and Pb, must be treated prior to discharge to meet increasingly stringent discharge guidelines and to limit the impact of toxic metals on ecosystems and human health. The application of olivine particles is a natural mineral-based solution to treat heavy metal-laden wastewaters, but little is known about the efficiency and mechanism of metal removal by this solid phase. In this work, we investigate the potential of olivine for heavy metal treatment by combining batch metal removal experiments with solid-phase characterization by synchro

OBJECTIVE: To report an additional case of incarceration of the penis by a heavy metallic object.
METHODS/RESULTS: A case of incarceration of the penis by a heavy metallic object (3400 gm) that was resolved by multiple puncture of the glans penis is described. After release, no complications were observed; penile morphology was completely recovered, erectile function was preserved and micturition was normal.
CONCLUSION: Multiple puncture of the glans penis was demonstrated to be useful in the management of this case of penile incarceration.

The kidney is one of the organs susceptible to heavy metal intoxication. The total body burden and "saturation" level in renal tissue are important limiting factors to the onset of renal injuries. Acute or chronic exposure to many of heavy metals can induce renal tubulointerstitial injuries, including acute tubular necrosis, chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis, Fanconi syndrome, renal tubular acidosis, and renal tubular dysfunction without morphological changes. Chronic cadmium intoxication can cause irreversible Fanconi syndrome with chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis. Both urinary low-mol

Metals such as iron and copper are critical to living organisms, whereas other metals such as lead and arsenic have no known biologic role. Any metals in large amounts may cause toxicity. Many metals cause pervasive systemic effects involving the nervous system, which can be subtle in some cases. Although challenging, the diagnosis and treatment of metal poisoning can be made based on history, physical examination, and the proper use of metal testing. This article focuses on the use, and misuse, of chelation in the diagnosis and management of metal intoxication.

Several categories of chemical and pharmacologic agents can cause alterations in cutaneous pigmentation, although the mechanisms differ and in several instances may be unknown. Fixed drug eruptions appear to have alteration of the basement membrane zone with incontinence of epidermal pigment as the mechanism of hyperpigmentation. Heavy metals produce increased pigmentation in part from deposition of metal particles and in part from an increase in epidermal melanin production. The antimalarials may bind to melanin. The phenothiazines and minocycline produce pigmentation from deposition of the d

Heavy metals are transported and accumulated along the food chain, exposing phytophagous insects to high risks of contamination. This study investigated the mechanisms underlying Pb and Cd tolerance in Lymantria dispar by focusing on the ABC transporter family. Multiple ABC genes in the larval midgut were significantly upregulated under Pb and Cd stress, respectively. Among them, LdABC7 showed the most prominent positive response to Pb stress, and LdABC12 to Cd stress. Following silencing of LdABC7 or LdABC12, larval growth inhibition under heavy metal stress was significantly exacerbated and

The present study was conducted on the river Yamuna, which passes through Delhi-NCR from Baghpat to Chhainssa, a distance of about 125 km, at six sampling locations to evaluate the concentrations of heavy metals in surface water using heavy metal pollution index (HPI) approach. The river serves both urban-industrial and rural areas in the study area; hence, domestic, industrial, and agricultural wastes are being contributed greatly in the contamination of river water. The Yamuna River is one of the major tributaries of the river Ganga originated in the Himalayas and is flowing through a varied
