Pupal age estimation of forensically important Megaselia scalaris (Loew) (Diptera: Phoridae).

In addition to causing myiasis in humans and animals, Megaselia scalaris (Loew) has been reported as a forensically important fly. The determination of a minimum postmortem interval (PMI) often relies on the determination of the age of the larvae and pupae. The pupal stage represents about 50% of the immature development time and the pupal age may therefore serve as an important tool in entomological minimum PMI estimation. The present study focuses on the key developmental processes during metamorphosis of M. scalaris pupae at different constant temperatures (18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33 and 36°C).

Neuroendocrinology of amphibian metamorphosis.

The timing of metamorphosis is a central amphibian life history trait and is controlled by the interplay of developmental progression, body size and condition, and environmental signals. These different processes and signals are integrated by the neuroendocrine system to regulate production of hormones by the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormone (TH) is the primary morphogen controlling metamorphosis, while corticosteroids (CSs) produced by the interrenal glands synergize with TH to promote metamorphic changes. The actions of TH are modulated by monodeiodinase enzymes expressed in TH target tissues.

Alteration of leopard frog (Rana pipiens) metamorphosis by the herbicide acetochlor.

Based on the geographic correlation between the use of the pre-emergent herbicide acetochlor [2-chloro-N-(ethoxymethyl)-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl) acetamide] and the natural range of Northern leopard frogs (Rana pipiens), we investigated the effects of acetochlor (ACETO) on frog metamorphosis. We specifically examined the interaction of ACETO with thyroid hormone (T3) and corticosterone (CORT), hormones that regulate natural metamorphosis. ACETO, T3, and CORT were administered via immersion. Growth, developmental stage, and onset of metamorphic climax (forelimb emergence, FLE) were measured. W

[The sensory neuropile of the nerve chain of Eurygaster integriceps P].

Structure of the sensory neuropil of the abdominal nervous chain has been studied in the Eurygaster integriceps P. by means of methylene blue and paraldehyde fuchsin with phloxin staining. The sensory neuropil consists of three parts: 1) main sensory neuropil, including terminal, T-shaped, antero- and posterconnective fibers; 2) lateral sensory neuropils of the extremities, that in the insect studied, as in the dragon-fly larva, have the form of the overturned eight; 3) system of thick T-shaped fibers getting into the first thoracic ganglion and running along the second nerves, as well as alon

How does a tadpole know when to metamorphose? Integrating evolutionary, ecological, and developmental biology with the neuroendocrinology of amphibian metamorphosis.

Amphibian metamorphosis is an excellent model for studying how selective pressures, environmental cues, endocrine signals, and molecular mechanisms influence developmental timing. In this minireview, I discuss key questions about the timing of metamorphosis, including: when and how do larvae acquire the ability to initiate metamorphosis; what historical and current ecological factors influence the optimal timing of transformation; and what are the physiological mechanisms that translate environmental information into a developmental response? From an ecological perspective, the timing of amphi

Amphibian skull evolution: the developmental and functional context of simplification, bone loss and heterotopy.

Despite their divergent morphology, extant and extinct amphibians share numerous features in the timing and spatial patterning of dermal skull elements. Here, I show how the study of these features leads to a deeper understanding of morphological evolution. Batrachians (salamanders and frogs) have simplified skulls, with dermal bones appearing rudimentary compared with fossil tetrapods, and open cheeks resulting from the absence of other bones. The batrachian skull bones may be derived from those of temnospondyls by truncation of the developmental trajectory. The squamosal, quadratojugal, pari

Diapause induction and termination in the predatory mite Euseius finlandicus in peach orchards in northern Greece.

The course of diapause induction as well as of diapause termination in females of the predatory mite Euseius (Amblyseius) finlandicus Oudemans (Acari: Phytoseiidae) in Northern Greece was determined by transferring females during winter and early spring from peach trees to a short day (LD 8:16) or a long day (LD 16:8) photoperiod both at 20 degrees C. The first diapause females were found in mid September and by the first week of October all the females were in diapause. The mean number of days required for diapause termination under the short day photoperiod LD 8:16 was gradually reduced from

Evidence for complex life cycle constraints on salamander body form diversification.

Metazoans display a tremendous diversity of developmental patterns, including complex life cycles composed of morphologically disparate stages. In this regard, the evolution of life cycle complexity promotes phenotypic diversity. However, correlations between life cycle stages can constrain the evolution of some structures and functions. Despite the potential macroevolutionary consequences, few studies have tested the impacts of life cycle evolution on broad-scale patterns of trait diversification. Here we show that larval and adult salamanders with a simple, aquatic-only (paedomorphic) life c

Histone acetyltransferases and N-terminal acetyltransferases orchestrate development and metamorphosis in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

Mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti, transmit major human diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. Epigenetic regulation, including histone acetylation, plays a key role in controlling Ae. aegypti development. However, the specific roles of histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and N-terminal acetyltransferases (NATs) in mosquito development remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated 25 HAT/NAT genes functions by knocking them down via feeding Ae. aegypti larvae with dsRNA nanoformulations. Gene expression analysis confirmed that target gene expression was reduced by more tha

Importance of diet in amphibian metamorphosis-based studies designed to assess the risk of thyroid active substances.

The present study evaluated the hypothesis that dietary quality used in historical studies may impact the effects of chemical stressors on premetamorphic development and metamorphosis due to suboptimal nutritional quality. A modified Amphibian Metamorphosis Assay (AMA) was performed in which Nieuwkoop and Faber (NF) Stage 47 tadpoles of Xenopus laevis were exposed for 32 days to iodide (I- )-deficient FETAX solution supplemented with <0.025, 0.17, 0.52, 1.58, and 4.80 μg I- /L (measured concentrations 0.061, 0.220, 0.614, 1.65, and 4.73 μg I- /L) and fed a pureed Frog Brittle (FB) diet. Exposure impacts of Imazapyr formulation on larval development and thyroid histology of Xenopus laevis.

There are increased concerns about the thyroidal effects of many anthropogenic substances in the environment. These substances include agricultural pesticides and industrial and pharmaceutical chemicals among others. Their potential thyroidal effects are of serious health and ecological concerns, as thyroid hormones mediate numerous physiological processes, including growth regulation, general metabolism and metamorphosis in metamorphic animals. This study assessed thyroidal activities of Arsenal formulation (Imazapyr) at environmentally relevant concentrations of 0.5, 2.0 and 3.5 mg/L followi

Food Restrictions Affect the Larval Metamorphosis and Early Juvenile Performance in a Neotropical Mangrove Fiddler Crab (Leptuca cumulanta).

Sporadic fluctuations in food availability may affect larval biology and post-metamorphic development in many marine invertebrates. In an experimental study in the laboratory, we investigated whether different regimes (1, 3, and 5 days) of initial starvation or feeding affect the survival and duration of the last planktotrophic larval stage (i.e., megalopa) of the neotropical mangrove fiddler crab Leptuca cumulanta. Newly metamorphosed crabs originating from megalopae starved for 1 and 3 days were cultured through the first 5 juvenile stages to further evaluate whether prior nutritional experi

Individual and mixture effects of caffeine and sulfamethoxazole on the daggerblade grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio following maternal exposure.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) such as caffeine and sulfamethoxazole have been detected in the estuarine environment. The present study characterized effects of a maternal exposure of these compounds on the development of the daggerblade grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio from embryo to juvenile life stage. Ovigerous females were exposed to either caffeine (20 mg/L), sulfamethoxazole (60 mg/L), or a mixture of both (20 mg/L caffeine and 60 mg/L sulfamethoxazole). Embryos were then removed from the females and the effects of the PPCPs on hatching, metamorphosis, juvenile growth

Triiodothyronine (T3) action on aquatic locomotor behavior during metamorphosis of the bullfrog Rana catesbeiana.

Thyroid hormones--particularly triiodothyronine, T3--play a critical role in the morphological transformations comprising metamorphosis in larval bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana). Traditional staging criteria for anuran larvae incompletely distinguish physiological and behavioral changes during growth. We therefore first developed a new parameter to describe larval growth, the developmental index (DI), which is simply the ratio between the tail length of the larva and its head diameter. Using the DI we were able to identify two distinct populations classifying the larvae during growth along a cont

[Toxocariasis in calves. Recent diagnosis and treatment (author's transl)].

Toxocara vitulorum, a parasite of suckling calves, was again diagnosed in Belgium in imported cattle of French origin. The infectious larvae are present in the milk and colostrum; they do not undergo further migration in the tissues of calves. This form of transmammary migration is not specific of T. vitulorum, but was also reported in S. ransomi in pigs. Treatment with levamisole at a dosage of 5 mg/kg results in complete disappearance of the worms. In addition to the cycles, the elements of a specific parasitological diagnosis are also described.
