Beyond Representation: Metaphor as a Mechanism for Interpersonal Reconstruction of Embodied Experience.

Human experience is fundamentally embodied, involving the continuous interaction of external perception, bodily awareness, physiological states, and affective responses. However, because subjective experiences are multidimensional and personally situated, communicating their qualitative character presents a fundamental challenge. Existing theories of metaphor have primarily emphasized its role in conceptual representation, reasoning, and meaning construction, whereas less attention has been given to how metaphor enables individuals to make embodied experiences accessible to others. This paper

Metaphoric and Gestural Descriptions of Out-of-Body Experiences by Persian Subjects.

The phenomena of out-of-body experience (OBE) and near-death experience (NDE) have attracted increasing research interest. In this study, we used a set of videos to examine verbal and gestural descriptions of a group of people talking about their OBE experiences. Two chi-square tests were used to find out what type of sentences and what type of gestures were more frequently used to describe normally-possible and normally-impossible OBE events. The results showed that normally-impossible OBE events were described more frequently by metaphoric sentences than literal sentences. Verbal description

Using metaphors in the care of childhood sexual abuse: a review essay.

Careful and intentional language use can improve healthcare outcomes for vulnerable populations. This essay critically analyses how metaphors shape clinical communication with childhood survivors of sexual abuse. Drawing on prior literature and insights from conversations with child abuse paediatricians and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy-certified psychologists, this essay discusses several key metaphors clinicians use when communicating with childhood survivors. Together, these perspectives inform our argument that metaphors-often treated as incidental in healthcare practice-are

Distributed embodiment of metaphorical hope in hand, head, and eyebrow gestures.

This study aimed to examine the embodied conceptualization of hope through metaphors. We asked a group of participants to discuss their hopes in a semi-structured interview. We examined the types of hand, head, and eyebrow gestures produced when they were talking about their future hopes. The obtained results showed that when participants talked about their future hopes, they mainly used forward hand gestures, rightward head gestures, and upward eyebrow gestures. Based on these results, it is suggested that various semantic components and emotional associations of hope are metaphorically embod

Examining Nursing Students' Perspectives on Cancer through Metaphors in Turkey.

This study was conducted to reveal the perceptions of cancer through metaphors among second-year nursing students. This study utilized descriptive phenomenology, which is a qualitative research design. In order to reveal the metaphors that each nursing student (n = 65) considered for the concept of "cancer," they were asked to complete the following sentence: "Cancer is like ……, because ……". In analyzing the data, a content analysis approach comprising coding, the identification of themes, and grouping of data according to codes and themes was used. It was found that the nursing students produ

Impaired comprehension of metaphorical expressions in very mild Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Brain-damaged patients often have difficulty understanding non-literal language. However, whether patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) have comprehension deficits of metaphorical expressions, in contrast with non-metaphorical (literal) expressions, remains unclear. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The subjects were 40 AD patients; 20 had mild AD (17-23 points on the Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE]), and 20 had very mild AD (≥24 points). Twenty normal elderly controls were also enrolled as a control group. Thirty sentences that contained novel similes (Items) were prepared. For each It

Comprehension and Generation of Metaphoric Language in Children, Adolescents, and Adults with Dyslexia.

Difficulties with figurative language comprehension were documented in adult dyslexia (DYS). In the present research, we investigated the comprehension and generation of metaphors in 37 children, 35 adolescents, and 34 adults with and without DYS. We also tested the contribution of executive function to metaphor processing. A multiple-choice questionnaire with conventional and novel metaphors was used to assess comprehension; a concept-explanation task was used to test conventional and novel metaphor generation (verbal creativity). The findings indicated differences between the dyslexic childr

Mechanistic and "natural" body metaphors and their effects on attitudes to hormonal contraception.

A small, self-selected convenience sample of male and female contraceptive users in the United Kingdom (n = 34) were interviewed between 2006 and 2008 concerning their feelings about the body and their contraceptive attitudes and experiences. The interviewees were a sub-sample of respondents (n = 188) who completed a paper-based questionnaire on similar topics, who were recruited through a poster placed in a family planning clinic, web-based advertisements on workplace and university websites, and through direct approaches to social groups. The bodily metaphors used when discussing contracepti

[Breast cancer metaphors and meanings from the perspective of five families].

This article analyzes metaphors and meanings related to breast cancer among families affected by the disease. The first section briefly contextualizes the social construction of meanings related to cancer in the 20th century, with the Brazilian context as the main reference. The next section discusses meanings ascribed to breast cancer in five families that included women who had received a diagnosis of breast cancer and who were (or had been) under in-hospital treatment. The families were part of a qualitative study on patients in a specialized cancer hospital in the State of Bahia. The data

Sheltered employment in schizophrenia is related to disorganization symptoms, processing speed and metaphor comprehension.

OBJECTIVES: The significance of cognitive functioning deficits in schizophrenia is already well acknowledged. The relationships among lower and higher order cognitive skills and symptoms, as well as their relevance to holding a paid job are relatively less researched, though. The purpose of this study was to conduct an analysis concerning these issues. METHODS: This study included 62 individuals with schizophrenia, 33 of them employed in paid sheltered jobs and 29 attending occupational therapy. They were assessed with tests of cognitive functions including communication skills. Psychopatholo

Metaphorical identity construction of depression sufferers on Chinese social media.

While prior research has documented various metaphors of depression, their role in identity construction in online communication remains underexplored, particularly in a Chinese cultural context. Drawing on a corpus-assisted analysis of Chinese Weibo posts, this study investigates how depression sufferers use metaphors of "depression" and "self" to construct identities. Metaphors were identified following the Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) and coded by two trained coders, with cross-checking and further discussion involving three native Chinese speakers. Results revealed that "depress

Therapeutic Metaphors Enhance Memory Systems in Mental Health Contexts.

BACKGROUND: Psychotherapeutic memory plays an important role in maintaining therapeutic effects; however, the neural mechanisms of therapeutic metaphor promoting long-term memory were still unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study used metaphorical micro-counseling dialog scenarios to investigate the memory effect of therapeutic metaphor and correlated neural mechanisms. METHODS: At first, 31 participants read a mental distress problem, followed by a metaphorical or a literal solution, while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning during the encoding phase. One week later, a recognit

Shaping sustainable perceptions: The role of metaphors in Olympic news discourse.

The dissemination of sustainable development concepts in large international events like the Olympics has garnered great attention. As a major international sports event, the Beijing Winter Olympics served as an important platform for showcasing China's sustainable development philosophy through its official news coverage. In this context, metaphor, as a powerful cognitive tool, plays a crucial role in shaping public perception and facilitating the dissemination of values by mapping concrete source domains onto abstract target domains. This paper constructs a critical metaphor analysis framewo

The Impact of Metaphors on Academic Text Comprehension: The Case of Students With Dyslexia.

Metaphor has long been used by scholars to make concepts more comprehensible. However, this use of figurative language has never been investigated in relation to the way students with dyslexia learn from academic texts. This study aims to assess the impact of metaphors on overall academic text comprehension in university students with and without dyslexia. Excerpts from scientific articles containing metaphors were adapted to be presented in two comparable conditions: metaphorical and literal. Legibility indexes were controlled for to guarantee the same difficulty between conditions. Twenty-ei

Metaphorical perceptions of surgical nurses regarding care for earthquake victims.

BACKGROUND: The physical, psychological, and social effects of the earthquake affect a person's functionality directly. It challenges individuals because it is often traumatizing, intense fear is experienced, and it is unpredictable, uncontrollable, and destructive. Nurses are one of the professional groups that have important duties in social disasters, and they are constantly exposed to the details of the traumatic situation, sometimes physically and sometimes by listening. To understand the severity of the trauma caused by this exposure, it is important to understand the emotions and though

Seatbelts and raincoats, or banks and castles: Investigating the impact of vaccine metaphors.

While metaphors are frequently used to address misconceptions and hesitancy about vaccines, it is unclear how effective they are in health messaging. Using a between-subject, pretest/posttest design, we investigated the impact of explanatory metaphors on people's attitudes toward vaccines. We recruited participants online in the US (N = 301) and asked them to provide feedback on a (fictional) health messaging campaign, which we organized around responses to five common questions about vaccines. All participants completed a 24-item measure of their attitudes towards vaccines before and after ev

The Epistemic Limits of Impactful Dreams: Metacognition, Metaphoricity, and Sublime Feeling.

Taxonomic studies of dreams that continue to influence the dreamer's thoughts and feelings after awakening have distinguished three types of impactful dreams: nightmares, existential dreams, and transcendent dreams. Of these, existential dreams and transcendent dreams are characterized by recurrent metacognitive appraisal of the epistemic tension between complementary (a) metaphoric (A "is" B) assertions and (b) literal (A "is not" B) assertions. Metacognitive appraisal of such complementary metaphoric and literal assertions is detectable as the felt sense of inexpressible realizations. The po

Lexicon of Metaphors: An Innovative Approach to Detect the Aftermath of Traumatic Childbirth.

An innovative approach to help mental health providers identify individuals who may be struggling with the aftermath of birth trauma is to become vigilant in listening for metaphors women may use to describe how they have been feeling. Metaphors can provide a safe bridge for individuals to share and work through painful and challenging feelings. This lexicon of metaphors has four sections: impact birth trauma had on breastfeeding, impaired mother-infant interaction, anniversary of birth trauma, and subsequent childbirth. Examples of these metaphors include empty affair, head in a vise, short f
