Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common pathogens in skin and soft tissue infections, as well as in potentially serious nosocomial infections in patients who acquire it when hospitalized. Penicillin was introduced in the 1940's as an effective treatment against S. aureus. However, shortly after penicillin's introduction, penicillin resistance to S. aureus emerged due to a plasmid-mediated beta-lactamase enzyme. In 1959, a semisynthetic penicillin, methicillin was introduced to overcome the resistance problem. However, within a year, bacteria resistant to methicillin and other penicilli

Staphylococcus aureus is a major cause of infections in both hospitals and communities, and is exhibiting increasing resistance to methicillin (methicillin-resistant S. aureus, MRSA) and related beta-lactams. MRSA is usually considered a nosocomial pathogen, but increasingly it is acquired in the community. In Taiwan, MRSA was colonized in a substantial proportion of healthy children and accounted for 25% to 75% of childhood community-acquired (CA) S. aureus infections. From the preliminary data, the isolates of sequence type (ST) 59 by multilocus sequence typing method appeared to be the majo

We present a 43-year-old man with a history of intravenous drug abuse who presented to the emergency department with a 5-week history of lower urinary tract symptoms. On digital rectal examination, a firm prostate with exquisite tenderness was noted. Computed tomography scan of the pelvis with contrast demonstrated a 4.4 by 2.7-cm prostatic abscess in the right lobe. Suppurative fluid was expressed from the right prostatic lobe during transurethral resection of the prostate. Cultures of blood and suppurative prostatic fluid grew methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

We examined the clinical features of 14 men (mean age 72 years) with postoperative enteritis caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The patients had all undergone surgery for the treatment of digestive diseases and had received antibiotic prophylaxis consisting of an extended-spectrum cephem. Diarrhea appeared a mean of 3.3 days postoperatively and lasted for 5 days on average. In severe cases organ insufficiency was involved. Coagulate-positive staphylococci were the predominant organisms isolated from watery diarrhea. In 13 of 14 patients, coagulase type II isolates pr

This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activities of 61 plant extracts from 49 Malaysian ethnomedicinal plants and to investigate the interaction of the active plant extracts in combination with synthetic antibiotics against the MSSA and MRSA strains. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the plant extracts were determined using a microdilution method against MSSA and MRSA strains. The interaction between active plant extracts and the antibiotics was assessed using the checkerboard method. The total fractional inhibitory concentratio

Septic Arthritis is an orthopedic emergency that requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common pathogen causing septic arthritis. This review seeks to describe clinical characteristics and outcomes associated with patients with methicillin-resistant (MRSA) vs. methicillin-sensitive staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) septic arthritis. The review showed that those infected with MRSA were older, had more chronic medical conditions, and higher values of inflammatory markers. MRSA septic arthritis was also associated with more complications, longer duration of antibiot

The mechanism of staphylococcal resistance to methicillin is unknown. Peptidoglycan synthesis was studied in a methicillin-resistant and a derived methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus strain. Although the methicillin minimum inhibitory concentration for growth of the methicillin-resistant strain was 1,600 micrograms/ml, peptidoglycan synthesis by the organism incubated in a wall synthesis solution was inhibited about 90% by 5 micrograms of methicillin per ml. In contrast, high concentrations of methicillin added to actively growing cultures of the methicillin-resistant strain had little

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in plaque and tongue samples from systemically healthy subjects with periodontal health, gingivitis or chronic periodontitis.
METHODS: After screening 720 potentially eligible subjects, 154 systemically healthy participants were ultimately enrolled in the current study. Subgingival samples were taken from the first molars and the tongue and analyzed for the presence of S. aureus and MRSA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), using primers and conditions previously described in the

Background: Many trauma centers have empiric treatment algorithms for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) treatment prior to culture results that include antibiotic agents for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) coverage that can have adverse effects. This is the only study to evaluate risk factors and MRSA nasal swabs to risk-stratify trauma patients for MRSA VAP, thereby potentially limiting the need for empiric vancomycin. Patients and Methods: This was a single institution retrospective cohort study. Adult patients admitted to the trauma intensive care unit (ICU) between J

Nasal methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) testing at admission to the hospital was found to have a positive likelihood ratio of 8.5 and a negative likelihood ratio of 0.41 for predicting MRSA soft tissue infections. The clinical utility of this test depends on the prevalence of MRSA infection. In high prevalence populations, nasal MRSA is useful to rule in MRSA infections. In low prevalence populations it may be useful to rule out infections.

Staphylococcus aureus infections, particularly methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), remain a major clinical challenge due to limited treatment options. Plant-derived compounds have gained interest as alternative or adjunct antibacterial agents. This study investigated the antibacterial, antibiofilm, and synergistic effects of Terminalia arjuna extract against S. aureus and MRSA, with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. Antibacterial activity of T. arjuna extract was evaluated using microdilution, time-kill, checkerboard, and biofilm assays against S. aureus and MRSA, wit

BACKGROUND: In the last decade, non-multiresistant methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (NM-MRSA) has been described as an important agent in bloodstream infections in our hospital.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study, conducted from February 2009 through January 2010 in the neonatal unit, evaluated 403 newborns (NB), their 382 mothers and 148 health care workers (HCW).
RESULTS: Approximately 217 NB (54%), 187 mothers (48%) and 87 HCW (59%) were colonized by S. aureus (SA). MRSA colonization was greater among NB (15%) than mothers (4.7%) and HCW (3.4%). Although mother-to-NB transm

Chlorhexidine has been increasingly utilized in outpatient settings to control methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) outbreaks and as a component of programs for MRSA decolonization and prevention of skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs). The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of chlorhexidine resistance in clinical and colonizing MRSA isolates obtained in the context of a community-based cluster-randomized controlled trial for SSTI prevention, during which 10,030 soldiers were issued chlorhexidine for body washing. We obtained epidemiological data on study

INTRODUCTION: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in cystic fibrosis (CF) impairs lung function and contributes to the progression of the disease. Optimal eradication regimens for new-onset MRSA infections in people with CF (pwCF) remain undefined.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective, multicenter study evaluated a standardized, step-up MRSA eradication regimen in pwCF with new-onset MRSA infections between 2020 and 2022.
RESULTS: Ninety-one pwCF (52.7% male, median age: 9 years) were included. Our treatment regimen included oral rifampicin and co-trimoxazole or oral rifamp

The escalating threat of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections, coupled with the dwindling efficacy of current antibiotics, highlights the urgent need for novel antimicrobial agents. In this study, we demonstrate that sanguinarine - a plant-derived benzophenanthridine alkaloid - exerts potent antibacterial activity against MRSA, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 20 mg/L. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying its antibacterial effects, we conducted a comprehensive, time-resolved proteomic analysis of MRSA upon sanguinarine exposure, quantifying a

Therapeutic option for treating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is urgently required since its resistance to a broad spectrum of currently available antibiotics. Here, we report that isoniazid is able to potentiate the killing efficacy of tigecycline to MRSA. The combination of isoniazid and tigecycline reduces the minimal inhibitory concentration of clinic MRSA strains to tigecycline. The killing activity of tigecycline is further confirmed by killing experiments and murine infection model. We further demonstrate the mechanism that isoniazid increases intracellula

The present study aims to characterise clinical MRSA isolates from a tertiary care centre in Egypt's second-largest city, Alexandria. Thirty isolates collected in 2020 were genotypically characterised by microarray to detect their resistance and virulence genes and assign them to clonal complexes (CC) and strains. Isolates belonged to 11 different CCs and 14 different strains. CC15-MRSA-[V+fus] (n = 6), CC1-MRSA-[V+fus+tir+ccrA/B-1] (PVL+) (n = 5) as well as CC1-MRSA-[V+fus+tir+ccrA/B-1] and CC1153-MRSA-[V+fus] (PVL+) (both with n = 3) were the most common strains. Most isolates (83%) harboure

A methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) liver abscess is a rare infection that if not recognized, and treated early, can be fatal. There is limited literature demonstrating possible etiologies of MRSA liver abscesses, whether nosocomial or community acquired. We present a case of a 45-year-old Guyanese male with a 30 pack-year smoking history. The patient presented with both generalized abdominal pain and a productive cough on two separate occasions. Laboratory results in his second presentation revealed leukocytosis with increased alanine transaminase (ALT). Imaging revealed a mu
