Regional assessment of ambient volatile organic compounds from biopharmaceutical R&D complex.

Biopharmaceutical R&D complexes are major emission sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which may pose potential health risks for staff on site and residents nearby. In this paper health risk assessments were performed for the VOCs in the ambient air of a typical biopharmaceutical R&D complex in China. Results showed halogenated and alkyl compounds were dominant components among 24 major VOCs from 9 selected sampling sites, inside or around the complex. The principal component analysis (PCA) indicated VOCs were generated predominantly from the biopharmaceutical research activities (fa

Risk of pancreatic cancer in workers exposed to chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents and related compounds: a meta-analysis.

This is a meta-analysis of occupational exposures to chlorinated hydrocarbon (CHC) solvents and pancreatic cancer, based primarily on studies that addressed exposure directly (agent studies) and secondarily on studies that reported data without verification of individual CHC exposures (job title studies), all of which were listed in databases for the period January 1969 to May 1998. Standardized extraction of data and double-checking of consistency of data extraction by five extractors were done. Simple random models estimated meta-relative risks. Suggestive weak excesses were found for trichl

Stimulation of hydrogen peroxide production by drinking water contaminants in HL-60 cells sensitized by retinoic acid.

Chemical carcinogens, such as chloroform and trichloroethylene, are present in drinking water in Japan. As these contaminants are believed to have a role in carcinogenesis, we examined if chloroform and trichloroethylene, as well as methylene chloride, xylene, benzene, and ethanol, have the ability to generate hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) in human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) and human leukemia (HL-60) cells. Methylene chloride, benzene, xylene, trichloroethylene, and ethanol did not increase cellular H(2)O(2): production as measured by flow cytometry nor as observed by confocal laser mi

Anti-osteoporosis bioactivity evaluation in zebrafish model of raw and salt-processed Achyranthes bidentata followed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis and correlation analysis.

Achyranthes bidentata has been found to possess beneficial effects against osteoporosis, but there is still a lack of comprehensive studies on its anti-osteoporotic compounds. Therefore, in this study, we established a zebrafish osteoporosis model to evaluate the anti-osteoporotic effect of different fractions of raw and salt-processed A. bidentata. Among these fractions, the dichloromethane fraction showed the most promising anti-osteoporotic effect. To further investigate the active compounds responsible for the anti-osteoporosis effects, we prepared and analyzed the dichloromethane fraction

Determination of clorazepate and its major metabolites in blood and urine by electron capture gas-liquid chromatography.

A sensitive and specific blood level method employing differential extraction was developed for the determination of clorazepate and its N-desmethyldiazepam metabolite by electron capture gas-liquid chromatography (GLC-ECD). The assay requires the initial extraction of N-desmethyldiazepam, the major metabolite, into benzene-methylene chloride (90:10) from the biological sample made alkaline with 0.1 N NaOH. The samples is then acidified with 2 N HCl to decarboxylate clorazepate to N-desmethyldiazepam, which is then extracted into benzene-methylene chloride (90:10) after adjusting the pH to 12.

Formation of chlorinated hydrocarbons from the reaction of chlorine atoms and activated carbon.

The reactions of chlorine atoms and activated carbon have been studied over the temperature range of 200-400 degrees C using an isothermal flow reactor in conjunction with 337 nm laser photolysis of Cl2. These studies have shown that carbon tetrachloride is the major product, with chloroform, methylene chloride, and methyl chloride being formed in progressively decreasing yields. Trace quantities of methane, ethane, and dichloroethylenes were also observed. Mechanisms of carbon fragmentation by successive addition of chlorine atoms are proposed. The formation of small chlorinated hydrocarbons

Spatially Decoupled Dual-Active Sites Break the Activity-Humidity Trade-Off: Achieving Water-Promoted Ozonation of Dichloromethane.

Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) present persistent environmental threats due to their recalcitrance to degradation and role in secondary pollution. Through the heterojunction engineering under dynamic Ostwald ripening, a cobalt-manganese oxide featuring a hollow sea urchin-like architecture was constructed. By directionally anchoring Co onto the Mn surface, the trade-off between catalytic activity and humidity tolerance in the ozone oxidation process was successfully addressed. The catalyst features spatially decoupled active centers, where Mn3+ sites mediate dichloromethane (DC

Engineering Subnanometric Electronic Interaction between Ru and Mn in Zeolite Boosts Catalytic Oxidation of Dichloromethane.

Designing catalysts with both activity and stability remains a grand challenge for the removal of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) by catalytic oxidation. Herein, the Ru-Mn subnanometric species encapsulated in ZSM-5 zeolite (RuMn@Z) was synthesized. It shows that the 90% conversion of dichloromethane is as low as 320 °C, which is significantly lower than that of Ru@Z (350 °C) and the impregnation catalyst (RuMn/Z, 355 °C). Importantly, the RuMn@Z catalyst exhibits excellent high-temperature resistance (800 °C for 10 h), water resistance, long-term stability, and cyclic stability

Phase-Engineered ZrO2 for Tuning Catalytic Oxidation of Dichloromethane Over W/ZrO2:Zr-Doped WOx Clusters and the Hydrolysis-Oxidation Mechanism.

Catalytic elimination through an oxidative decomposition pathway is the most promising candidate for the purification of chlorinated volatile organic compound (CVOC) pollutants, but the complicated mechanisms and the formation pathways of hydrogenated byproducts still need to be clearly revealed. Herein, W/ZrO2, as a structure-tunable catalyst, is used to catalytically oxidize dichloromethane (DCM) and clarify the formation pathway of monochloromethane (MCM). Crystal engineering of ZrO2 tailors surface WOx species; practically, the predominant Zr-WOx clusters and crystalline WO3 can be obtaine

Gelation behavior of short protected peptides in organic medium.

Peptide gelators have been widely explored in aqueous systems due to their prevalence in biological and medical applications. However, gelation behavior of peptides is less understood in organic medium, despite the extensive use of organic solvents in solid phase peptide synthesis, hybrid synthesis protocols, and the formation and application of organogels. Here, peptides with a short aqueous gelator sequence, lysine-tyrosine-phenylalanine or KYF, were investigated for the ability to form gels in dichloromethane (DCM) when their side groups are protected. Protected KYF-containing peptides form

Development of a simple solvent-based pretreatment technique for rapid and accurate quantification of PAHs in PAH-containing particulate matter for toxicity assessment.

BACKGROUND: Particulate matter (PM) is a major airborne pollutant whose toxicity is strongly influenced by its chemical composition. Among its components, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are key toxic and carcinogenic organic compounds, making the rapid and accurate quantification of these compounds essential for establishing inhalation toxicity exposure conditions. However, existing PAH pretreatment protocols have been optimized for trace-level environmental monitoring and therefore rely on long extraction times and complex instrumentation, making them unsuitable for high-concentratio

Airlift two-phase partitioning bioreactor for dichloromethane removal: Silicone rubber stimulated biodegradation and its auto-circulation.

Solid non-aqueous phases (NAPs), such as silicone rubber, have been used extensively to improve the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, the removal of VOCs is difficult to be further improved because the poor understanding of the mass transfer and reaction processes. Further, the conventional reactors were either complicated or uneconomical. In view of this, herein, an airlift bioreactor with silicone rubber was designed and investigated for dichloromethane (DCM) treatment. The removal efficiency of Reactor 1 (with silicone rubber) was significantly higher than that of React

Preparation of propargyl 1,2-orthoesters of carbohydrates: From side reactions in dichloromethane to optimized reaction conditions in acetonitrile.

In this note, supercritical fluid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (SFC-HRMS) has been used to identify a chloro glycoside formed during the preparation of propargyl 1,2-orthoesters in dichloromethane. Additional studies revealed that 20-40% of this side-product was obtained depending on the source of anhydrous solvent, and that tetrabutylammonium iodide amplifies this side-reaction. Finally, a reliable procedure was developed in acetonitrile to prepare these glycosyl donors from perbenzoylated bromo glycosides in manno, gluco and galacto series in 63-74% yield.

Improved analytical performance of negative 63Ni ion mobility spectrometry for on-line measurement of propofol using dichloromethane as dopant.

On-line monitoring of propofol in exhaled air is a potential way to evaluate the anaesthesia depth for patients during surgery. In this study, a negative (63)Ni ionization high resolution ion mobility spectrometer with Bradbury-Nielsen-Gate-Grid structure was built to measure propofol with reactant ions Cl(-)(H2O) n using dichloromethane as dopant. Instead of forming three propofol ions (M - H)(-), M · O2(-), and (M2 - H)(-) with reactant ions O2(-)(H2O)n, only product ion M · Cl(-) was produced when introducing dichloromethane gas. The peak-to-peak resolution (R p-p) between reactant ions Cl(

[Removal characteristics of DCM by biotrickling filter and biofilter].

A biofilter (BF) packed with nutrition slow-release material and a biotrickling filter (BTF) packed with ether-based polyurethane foam were set up to remove dichloromethane (DCM) from exhaust gas. Results showed that the biofilm formations in BTF and BF were completed by using the mixture of a special strain and a bacterial community, within 25d and 22d, respectively. Through the observation of the filter surface by SEM, the surface of packings in BF was loose with thin biofilm colonies, whereas the one in BTF was dense with thick biofilm. Under the condition of inlet DCM concentration of 100-

Ultrasound-promoted tosylation of oligo(ethylene glycols).

A series of oligo(ethylene glycols) was efficiently tosylated by ultrasound procedure within dichloromethane in the presence of triethylamine. Results show that sonochemical synthesis of oligo(ethylene glycol) ditosylates has a double advantage since it does not use catalysts and it drastically reduces the reaction time. This straightforward method represents an eco-friendly alternative to the traditional tosylation by pyridine synthesis.

Probing the ultrafast solution dynamics of a cyanine dye in an organic solvent interfaced with water.

Dependence of ultrafast dynamics on the excited state evolution and ground state recovery of a cyanine dye (IR125) in dichloromethane (DCM) solvent interfaced with neat water is presented. We use degenerate pump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy to show that the excited-state dynamics of the dye molecule is strongly dependent on the position of the measurements from bulk DCM solution to the solution near the water layer. The decay component of the transient corresponding to the excited state lifetime increases from bulk DCM solution to its interface with water. Such results show that the

Optimizing aerobic biodegradation of dichloromethane using response surface methodology.

Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to evaluate the optimum aerobic biodegradation of dichloromethane (DCM) in pure culture. The parameters investigated include the initial DCM concentration, glucose as an inducer and hydrogen peroxide as terminal electron acceptor (TEA). Maximum aerobic biodegradation efficiency was predicted to occur when the initial DCM concentration was 380 mg/L, glucose 13.72 mg/L, and H202 115 mg/L. Under these conditions the aerobic biodegradation rate reached up to 93.18%, which was significantly higher than that obtained under original conditions. Without
