Multimodal nanoengineered scaffolds as regenerative microenvironment orchestrators: coupling mechanical, bioelectrical, immunological, and spatiotemporal therapeutic cues.

Nanoengineered scaffolds are evolving from passive structural supports into instructive platforms capable of regulating the regenerative microenvironment. This narrative review examines how mechanical, bioelectrical, immunological, and spatiotemporal therapeutic cues are engineered and integrated within multimodal scaffolds. A literature search was performed using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases for publications from January 2015 to March 2026, with earlier studies included when mechanistically essential. Mechanically instructive architectures regulate cellular org

First-Principles Investigation of Surface Mechanochemistry of Transition Metal Phosphides under Oxygen and Benzene Atmospheres.

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have aroused widespread research interest in the past decade due to their excellent electrical and mechanical properties. Nonetheless, their application in micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS) has not been investigated. Here, we use density functional theory (DFT) to explore the potential of four transition-metal phosphides to act as contact materials of MEMS/NEMS switches. Specifically, we first investigate the thermodynamic stability of Ru2P, RuP, Rh2P, and TiP under an oxygen environment. Then, using benzene as the background gas, the m

Multi-Indenter Device for in Vivo Biomechanical Tissue Measurement.

Biomechanical tissue properties have been hypothesized to play a critical role in the quantification of prosthetic socket production for individuals with limb amputation. In this investigation, a novel indenter platform is presented and its performance evaluated for the purposes of residual-limb tissue characterization. The indenter comprised 14 position- and force-controllable actuators that circumferentially surround a biological residuum to form an actuator ring. Each indenter actuator was individually controllable in position ( [Formula: see text] accuracy) and force (330 mN accuracy) at a

A Dual-Mode Magnetic-Acoustic System for Monitoring Fluid Intake Behavior in Animals.

We have developed an unobtrusive magnetic-acoustic fluid intake monitoring (MAFIM) system using a conventional stainless-steel roller-ball nipple to measure licking and drinking behavior in animals. Movements of a small permanent magnetic tracer attached to stainless-steel roller balls that operate as a tongue-actuated valve are sensed by a pair of three-axial magnetometers, and transformed into a time-series indicating the status of the ball (up or down), using a Gaussian mixture model based data-driven classifier. The sounds produced by the rise and fall of the roller balls are also recorded

Unveiling Carrier-Mediated Acoustic Leakage as a Hidden Loss Pathway in Piezoelectric-Semiconductor Heterostructures.

Heterogeneous integration of dissimilar functional materials enables advanced micro/nano devices with unprecedented functionalities, yet the resulting interfacial multiphysics interactions can introduce hidden energy leakage pathways beyond conventional bulk systems. Here, we reveal a previously overlooked carrier-mediated acoustic leakage mechanism in piezoelectric-semiconductor heterostructures. By developing an electromechanical-carrier coupling model, we demonstrate that interfacial carrier accumulation reconstructs electrical boundary conditions, causing piezoelectric fields to penetrate

Wear-time recording during early Class III facemask treatment using TheraMon chip technology.

Successful intervention in a developing Class III malocclusion with facemask protraction therapy depends on a patient's ability to adhere to the recommendations for duration of appliance wear. In this article, we report the introduction of a novel approach for tracking of the duration of application of a protraction facemask, with the incorporation of a "FaceMon" sensor (TheraMon, microelectronic system; MC Technology GmbH, Hargelsberg, Austria) to track wear time. A 9-year-old boy with a Class III malocclusion was successfully treated with a modified alternate rapid maxillary expansion and co

[Diagnostic and interventional endoscopy in gastroenterology : from high-resolution chips and procedures for endoscopic resection to NOTES].

In the past 10 years endoscopic diagnostics has benefited from technologies such as big chips, high-definition television (HDTV) and narrow band imaging (NBI). Video capsule endoscopy and double balloon enteroscopy have facilitated visualization of the entire small bowel. A number of studies on mucosal Barrett's and gastric cancers could prove that endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is oncologically equivalent to surgical resection when certain criteria are respected. However, EMR is less invasive and carries a substantially lower complication risk and mortality compared to surgery. Endoscopic

Label free and amplified detection of cancer marker EBNA-1 by DNA probe based biosensors.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a human herpes virus that has been associated with several malignancies as Burkitt's lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and Hodgkin's disease. All EBV associated malignancies showed a distinct viral gene expression pattern, while Epstein-Barr nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA-1) is constitutively expressed in all such disorders. Here, the development of a biosensor to detect EBNA-1 protein is reported, which was based on a nucleic acid bioreceptor and a quartz crystal microbalance with a dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) transducer. The DNA probe for EBNA-1 detection was designe

Strain-invariant omnidirectional stretchable MXetronics.

Titanium carbide MXene flakes hold great promise for system-level MXene-based electronics (MXetronics) due to their outstanding electrical conductivity and diverse functional properties. However, the weak MXene interlayer bonding often causes film fracturing under mechanical strain, ultimately leading to device failure, manifested as unstable operation, inaccurate data transmission, and potential electrical disconnection. Here, we present strain-invariant, omnidirectionally stretchable MXetronics (sos-MXetronics) through hierarchical stiffness microgrid engineering. This strategy synergistical

MEMS-based wearable eyeglasses for eye health monitoring.

A large number of world population suffer from vision related diseases/defects. Visual health supervision is important for detection, prevention and treatment of eyes disorders. Images of retina/fundus are important for diagnosis of eye diseases. In this paper we report on design and development of a wearable eyeglass type retinal imaging system using a 2D MEMS scanner for ocular health monitoring. Several wearability criteria for instance weight and size factor should be taken into account while designing a wearable health monitoring system. The 2D-MEMS scanner used in the system is small in

Multicenter clinical evaluation of a piezoresistive-MEMS-sensor rapid-exchange pressure microcatheter system for fractional flow reserve measurement.

OBJECTIVES: This multicenter, prospective clinical study investigates whether the microelectromechanical-systems-(MEMS)-sensor pressure microcatheter (MEMS-PMC) is comparable to a conventional pressure wire in fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurement. BACKGROUND: As a conventional tool for FFR measurement, pressure wires (PWs) still have some limitations such as suboptimal handling characteristics and unable to maintain the wire position during pullback assessment. Recently, a MEMS-PMC compatible with any 0.014″ guidewire is developed. Compared with the existing optical-sensor PMC, this MEMS

Validation of a Footwear-Based Gait Analysis System With Action-Related Feedback.

Quantitative gait analysis enables clinicians to evaluate patient mobility and to diagnose neuromuscular disorders. The clinical application of gait analysis is currently limited by the high operating costs of gait laboratories. The use of instrumented footwear that performs out of the lab measurements on subjects' walking patterns is a promising way to overcome this limitation. Besides serving as assessment tools, such devices can also act as retraining tools that help regulate a patient's gait with acoustic or vibrotactile stimuli.

Implementation of a direct install 3-pole type EM transducer in round window niche for implantable middle ear hearing aids.

Since the 1980's, various types of implantable hearing aids using unique means for delivering acoustic power to the inner ear have been developed. Recently, implantable hearing aids that stimulate the round window by the middle ear transducer have received great attention because it reduces loading effect at the ossicular chain. In this study, we have implemented a direct install 3-pole type EM transducer in round window niche for implantable middle ear hearing aid. The 3-pole type EM transducer consists of two permanent magnets and three coils and exhibit structural features that minimize lea

Analysis of using EMG and mechanical sensors to enhance intent recognition in powered lower limb prostheses.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the contribution of electromyography (EMG) data, in combination with a diverse array of mechanical sensors, to locomotion mode intent recognition in transfemoral amputees using powered prostheses. Additionally, we determined the effect of adding time history information using a dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) for both the mechanical and EMG sensors. APPROACH: EMG signals from the residual limbs of amputees have been proposed to enhance pattern recognition-based intent recognition systems for powered lower limb prostheses, but mechanical sen

Biomolecule detection via target mediated nanoparticle aggregation and dielectrophoretic impedance measurement.

A new biosensing system is described that is based on the aggregation of nanoparticles by a target biological molecule and dielectrophoretic impedance measurement of these aggregates. The aggregation process was verified within a microchannel via fluorescence microscopy, demonstrating that this process can be used in a real time sensor application. Positive dielectrophoresis is employed to capture the nanoparticle aggregates at the edge of thin film electrodes, where their presence is detected either by optical imaging via fluorescence microscopy or by measuring the change in electrical impeda

A microswitch to enable a woman with acquired brain injury and profound multiple disabilities to access environmental stimulation with lip movements.

This study assessed a new type of microswitch designed to enable a woman with acquired brain injury and profound multiple disabilities to access environmental stimulation through lip movements. The microswitch involved two optic sensors aimed at detecting changes in lip positions. Data showed that the microswitch was suitable and functional for the participant who increased her responding (lip movements) during the intervention phases of the study, that is, when her responses allowed her to access preferred stimulation. Practical implications of the findings were discussed.

Simulation of two-dimensional fully developed laminar flow for a magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) pump.

MHD micro-pumps circumvent the wear and fatigue caused by high pressure-drop across the check valves of mechanical micro-pumps in micro-fluidic systems. Early analyses of the fluid flow for MHD micro-pumps were mostly made possible by the Poiseuille flow theory; however, this conventional laminar approach cannot illustrate the effects of various channel sizes and shapes. This paper, therefore, presents a simplified MHD flow model based upon steady state, incompressible and fully developed laminar flow theory to investigate the characteristics of a MHD pump. Inside the pump, flowing along the c

Posterior maxillary segmental osteotomy concomitant with sinus lift using a piezoelectric device.

Tooth loss evokes functional and esthetic problems, and adjacent teeth can move if they are not corrected in a timely manner, rendering the problems of restoring the dentition more complex. If the opposing tooth is consequently extruded, several treatment modalities may be adopted, such as occlusal adjustment, crown prosthesis, orthodontic treatment, and segmental osteotomy. Segmental osteotomy is the most aggressive and invasive treatment for restoring a problematic occlusal plane due to the complications, such as hemorrhage, loss of tooth vitality, or necrosis of the segment.
