Siderophore-producing rhizobacteria improve iron and zinc accumulation in Vigna unguiculata: implications for sustainable nutrition.

Siderophores, low-molecular-weight compounds secreted by soil microorganisms, offer a sustainable approach to enhance iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) content in crops, addressing global micronutrient malnutrition. This study examines the biofortification potential of siderophore-producing plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) consortia in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), a vital legume for over 200 million people in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Four antibiotic tagged bacterial strains, Bacillus cereus (ISM10), Pantoea agglomerans (ISM11), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ZSM3), and Serratia marcescens (ZS

Weaving Life Into Regolith: Synthetic Autotrophic-Heterotrophic Consortia for Autonomous Biofabrication From Granular Feedstocks.

Long-duration human missions to Mars will require autonomous systems capable of converting in situ resources into structural materials, tools, and functional components. More broadly, such systems represent a class of resource-limited bioprocesses relevant to extreme-environment manufacturing. Here, we investigate synthetic autotrophic-heterotrophic consortia, inspired by lichen biology, as a platform for autonomous biofabrication from granular feedstocks. We experimentally screened filamentous fungi and paired them with diazotrophic cyanobacteria to identify mutually supportive consortia capa

From fruit waste to foods via fermentation.

The increasing generation of fruit waste represents a major environmental and economic challenge for the agri-food sector, while also offering significant opportunities for sustainable valorisation within the framework of the circular economy. Fruits rejected for cosmetic reasons, together with processing by-products, are rich sources of dietary fibre, sugars and bioactive compounds that can be converted into value-added products. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of microbial fermentation as a sustainable strategy for fruit waste valorisation, with particular emphasis on th

Epistatic interactions inform rational design of synthetic microbial communities for bioremediation.

The metabolism of microbial communities is essential for host and environmental health. The rational design of microbiomes with targeted functional properties is an important objective but remains challenging due to complex interactions and environmental heterogeneity. Community-function landscapes address this challenge by statistically inferring impacts of species presence or absence on function. Similar to fitness landscapes, community-function landscapes estimate both additive effects and interactions (epistasis) between species that influence function. We apply landscapes to design synthe

Effect of granular activated carbon and chloroform on chain elongation with simple substrate ethanol and acetate.

Chain elongation is a promising technology for production of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). Granular activated carbon (GAC) is commonly used in anaerobic fermentation. Low level CHCl3 can inhibit methanogenesis and homoacetogenesis at the same time. However, the effect of them on chain elongation performance with highly enriched consortia and simple substrate (i.e., ethanol and acetate) was still unclear. Hence, the effects of CHCl3 and on MCFAs production and the microbial community was studied here. CHCl3 displayed fatal effect on chain elongation system when its concentration was higher

From Circuits to Symphonies: A Systems-Engineering Blueprint for Multimicrobial Synthetic Biology.

Synthetic biology is expanding from single-species engineering toward the design of synthetic microbial consortia capable of distributed metabolism, coordinated behavior, and enhanced functional robustness. However, engineering frameworks derived from intracellular genetic circuits remain insufficient to capture the ecological, temporal, and spatial dynamics that govern multispecies systems. Here, a symphony-inspired systems-engineering framework is presented for multimicrobial synthetic biology, organizing consortium design across four application-dependent coordination layers: communication,

Complementary Bacterial Functions Enhance Mineralization of Aromatic Aliphatic Copolyesters within a Marine Microbial Consortium.

Plastics are a major environmental concern due to their persistence in natural systems. Biodegradable plastics can mitigate this impact by reducing their residence time in the environment. To constrain the environmental lifetime of these materials, understanding the fundamental principles dictating their biodegradation is crucial. The work presented here probes this complexity by using a 30-member bacterial community enriched from the marine ecosystem to investigate how bacterial consortia mineralize polybutylene sebacate-co-terephthalate (PBSeT), a biodegradable aromatic aliphatic copolyester

From traditional retting to precision bioprocessing: microbial ecology, enzymatic selectivity, and systems biology of jute retting.

Jute is one of the world's most important lignocellulosic fibre crops, yet its commercial value remains highly dependent on retting, a biologically mediated fibre extraction process still largely governed by empirical practices and variable environmental conditions. Recent advances in microbial ecology, enzymology, molecular biology, and bioprocess engineering have transformed retting from a traditional post-harvest operation into a controllable lignocellulosic bioconversion process. This review synthesizes current understanding of the structural organization of jute bast fibres, selective deg

Ecological linkages between top-down designed benzothiazole-degrading consortia and selection strength: From performance to community structure and functional genes.

The inefficient biodegradation and incomplete mineralization of nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds (NHCs) have emerged as a pressing environmental concern. The top-down design offers potential solutions to this issue by targeting improvements in community function, but the ecological linkages between selection strength and the structure and function of desired microbiomes remain elusive. Herein, the integration of metagenomics, culture-based approach, non-targeted metabolite screening and enzymatic verification experiments revealed the effect of enrichment concentration on the top-down designe

The emergence of cooperation from a single mutant during microbial life cycles.

Cooperative behaviour is widespread in nature, even though cooperating individuals always run the risk of being exploited by free-riders. Population structure effectively promotes cooperation given that a threshold in the level of cooperation was already reached. However, the question how cooperation can emerge from a single mutant, which cannot rely on a benefit provided by other cooperators, is still puzzling. Here, we investigate this question for a well-defined but generic situation based on typical life cycles of microbial populations where individuals regularly form new colonies followed

Probiotic and postbiotic treatment improves coral health and promotes specific metabolic and microbiome changes in situ during a heatwave.

Microbial therapies are emerging as promising tools for coral protection against heat stress, yet such application was not tested in situ. We tested two coral-derived probiotic consortia and their heat-killed counterparts (postbiotics) on bleaching Acropora cf. valida in the Red Sea during a marine heatwave. Over 15 days, both live and one of the heat-killed treatments maintained photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm), whereas placebo-treated corals exhibited significant thermal stress-induced decline. 16S rRNA gene sequencing profiling showed enrichment of putatively beneficial genera (e.g., Teras

Microalgae-Bacteria Interactions in the Bio-based Circular Economy: Mechanisms and Biotechnological Applications.

Prokaryotic cyanobacteria and eukaryotic microalgae are promising photosynthetic microorganisms that convert solar energy to biomass which is commercially being used for food, dietary supplements, and animal feed. Algae consortia cultivation is a viable technique in the circular bioeconomy because it can grow in non-arable lands using wastewater thereby lower the pollution by sequestering nutrient and recovering from its biomass. Thus, biomass produced becomes valuable for bioenergy and biomolecules, and achieving technical and economic feasibility in bioremediation and pollutant mitigation. P

The potential of native microalgae consortia to remove pharmaceutical compounds present in treated wastewater.

Wastewater treatment plants play a key role in the release of pharmaceuticals and other contaminants into the aquatic environment, causing negative effects on the ecosystems of receiving water bodies. This work aimed to assess the removal efficiency of real loads of these contaminants by wastewater-native microalgae consortia acting on treated wastewater previously subjected to secondary treatment. Wastewater sampling and removal efficiency experiments were conducted over 1 year at three different sampling points. Nineteen pharmaceutical compounds of different drug classes (stimulants, anticon

Biocontrol Efficacy of Pseudomonas Consortia Against Botrytis Blight in Petunias.

Botrytis cinerea, a fungal pathogen causing Botrytis blight, significantly impacts greenhouse crop management owing to its broad host range and infection capabilities at various growth stages. Traditional control methods, primarily reliant on fungicides, are challenged by environmental concerns and the rise of fungicide-resistant strains. This study investigates the use of beneficial Pseudomonas bacteria as a sustainable alternative. We hypothesized that specific Pseudomonas consortia could provide more effective biocontrol of B. cinerea than individual strains. Our research investigated five

Synergistic effect of Zinc Solubilizing Bacteria and Consortia on the zinc marker enzymes and gaseous exchange parameters in Rice (Oryza sativa L.) for zinc biofortification.

This study investigates the impact of Zinc Solubilizing Bacteria (ZSB) and their consortia on key physiological and biochemical in two rice varieties, PD 26 and NDR 359, over two consecutive growing seasons (2022 and 2023). Unlike individual bacterial strains, microbial consortia harness the synergistic interactions between multiple species, leading to enhanced zinc solubilization efficiency and improved plant responses. The application of consortia significantly boosted the activities of zinc-dependent enzymes, including carbonic anhydrase (CA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). It also signific

QS molecules change the planktonic/mineral subpopulations distribution of moderately thermophilic leaching bacteria in pyrite and decrease leaching in chalcopyrite.

Biomining is a sustainable alternative to conventional mineral processing that uses acidophilic microorganisms to catalyze the extraction of valuable metals from sulfide minerals. Mixed microbial consortia composed of moderate thermophiles such as Sulfobacillus and some Leptospirillum species improve metal extraction efficiency at higher temperatures compared to pure cultures of mesophiles. However, quorum sensing (QS), which regulates microbial interactions and likely influences bioleaching performance, has not been studied in these species. In this study, treatment of a moderately thermophil

A metabolic relay for caproic acid production in Huangshui: Cooperative interaction between Clostridium tyrobutyricum and Caproiciproducens.

Microbial chain elongation for medium-chain fatty acid production has gained significant attention. This study elucidated how initial pH and carbon sources regulate microbial caproic acid production from organic waste. By successively subculturing pit mud with Huangshui, lactic acid, or ethanol at different pH values (4.0-6.0), we obtained two enriched consortia: NatCom H (from Huangshui) and NatCom E (from ethanol), both of which produce 10 g/L caproic acid at pH 6.0. Key functional divergence was observed: NatCom H maintained production from pH 5.0 to 6.0, whereas NatCom E was functional onl

Hydrogen excess drives metabolic reprogramming and viral dynamics in syngas-converting microbiomes.

Microbial communities drive essential bioprocesses, including the conversion of synthesis gas into biomethane, a sustainable energy source that supports circular carbon economies. In anaerobic environments, specialized consortia of bacteria and archaea facilitate syngas methanation through syntrophic interactions, where hydrogenotrophic methanogens play a central role in reducing carbon dioxide and monoxide with hydrogen. However, imbalances in gas ratios, particularly excess hydrogen, can disrupt these interactions and impair overall efficiency. Yet, the molecular mechanisms underlying microb
