Current issues in the management of acute bacterial sinusitis in children.

OBJECTIVE: To review and summarize recent challenges in the microbiology and treatment of acute bacterial sinusitis (ABS), one of the most common infectious diseases in the pediatric community. METHODS: A review of recent medical literature from 1990 to 2006 was acquired using the National Library of Medicine's PUBMED database. RESULTS: Multiple mechanisms of penicillin resistance have been identified: porin channel blockage, beta-lactamase production, and changes in penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Other factors affecting treatment efficacy include the role of normal nasopharyngeal flora

Semi-quantitative food safety risk profile of the Australian red meat industry.

In 2017-18, the Australian red meat (beef, sheep and goat species) industry generated more than $AUD 13 billion in export trade alone and is therefore of substantial importance to the Australian GDP. With both relatively high amounts of domestic red meat consumption and dependence on international markets, food safety risk is constantly reassessed so as to maintain a resilient industry sector. The current study aimed to conduct a food safety risk rating for the Australian red meat industry. In 2002, a food safety risk profile was developed for the Australian red meat industry. It included raw

Arsenic geochemistry in a biostimulated aquifer: an aqueous speciation study.

Stimulating microbial growth through the use of acetate injection wells at the former uranium mill site in Rifle, Colorado, USA, has been shown to decrease dissolved uranium (VI) concentrations through bacterial reduction to immobile uranium (IV). Bioreduction also changed the redox chemistry of site groundwater, altering the mobility of several other redox-sensitive elements present in the subsurface, including iron, sulfur, and arsenic. Following acetate amendment at the site, elevated concentrations of arsenic in the groundwater were observed. Ion chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-m

Microbial quality and nutritional aspects of Norwegian brand waters.

The microbiological quality of the five leading brands of Norwegian bottled still waters was investigated. All brands were free for the enteric indicator organisms and named pathogens whose absence is demanded in current quality directives. The relatively nutrient-poor agar R₂A revealed large heterogeneous bacterial populations which grew slowly, or not at all, on clinical media specified for use in substrate-utilization approaches to identification. The main approach used for identification was cultivation of microbes on R₂A, followed by amplification and partial sequencing of 16S rDNA genes.

Paleolimnology of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica.

The McMurdo Dry Valleys presently contain more than 20 permanent lakes and ponds, which vary markedly in character. All, with the exception of a hypersaline pond, have a perennial ice-cover. The dry valley lakes, and lakes in other ice-free regions of continental Antarctica, are unique on this planet in that they consistently maintain a thick year-round ice cover (2.8-6.0 m) over liquid water. The persistent ice covers minimize wind-generated currents and reduce light penetration, as well as restricting sediment deposition into a lake and the exchange of atmospheric gases between the water col

Enumeration of sulphate-reducing bacteria for assessing potential for hydrogen sulphide production in urban drainage systems.

Urban drainage structures have increasing demands which can lead to increasing hydrogen sulphide related problems forming in places where they have not previously been prevalent. This puts pressure on the methods currently used to monitor and diagnose these problems and more sophisticated methods may be needed for identifying the origin of the problems. Molecular microbiological techniques, such as quantitative polymerase chain reaction, offer a potential alternative for identifying and quantifying bacteria likely to be causing the production of hydrogen sulphide, information that, when combin

Degradation of quinoline by a soil bacterium.

From garden soil a bacterium was isolated which grew aerobically in mineral salts medium with quinoline as sole C source and NH4+ as N source. During growth with quinoline, 2-hydroxyquinoline accumulated in the culture fluid and later disappeared. Whole cells oxidized 2-hydroxyquinoline, 2,6-dihydroxyquinoline and 2,7,8,-trihydroxyquinoline as rapidly as quinoline and without a lag. Catechol was oxidized more slowly by meta-cleavage but at an increasing rate indicative of adaptation. A number of derivatives of benzene and pyridine were not attacked. Whole cells oxidized 2,7,8,-trihydroxyquinol

Infective endocarditis by Enterobacter cloacae: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Enterobacter species are Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, facultative anaerobes typically motile due to the presence of peritrichous flagella. E. cloacae, the species responsible for the majority of Enterobacter infections in humans, is part of the intestinal microbiota and may cause infection in patients that have previously received antimicrobial therapy or who have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. E. cloacae may cause several infections, such as pneumonia, urinary tract, skin and soft tissue and intravascular infections. Infective Endocarditis (IE) is a rare disease with notable m

[Otorhinolaryngologic infections in the post-pandemic context: What can we learn from the literature?].

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of various respiratory infections changed due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lockdowns and other containment measures (nonpharmacologic interventions, NPI) led to a decline in virus circulation, resulting in fewer cases at hospitals and practices. Once restrictions were eased, a rebound effect was observed worldwide, resulting in an increase in viral and severe invasive bacterial infections. OBJECTIVE: Various case series on different ear, nose, and throat (ENT) infections have been conducted in the context of the pandemic in Germany. These studies should

Synergistic thermosonication combined with germinants and licorice extract improves microbial inactivation, physicochemical quality, and volatile profile stability of ready-to-eat chicken breasts.

This study evaluated thermosonication combined with germinants and licorice extract (GTL) in the "germination-inactivation-inhibition" strategy to control spore contamination and preserve the quality of ready-to-eat (RTE) chicken breasts. The microbial counts, color, pH, texture, lipid oxidation, and volatile profile of RTE chicken breasts were assessed. The result demonstrated that the GTL treatment significantly reduced the total viable counts (TVC) and Clostridium counts, with TVC remaining below 4 log CFU/g and Clostridium counts lower than in the control (4.42 vs. 7.31 log CFU/g) by day 6

Predicting heat process efficiency in thermal processes when bacterial inactivation is not log-linear.

The food industry widely uses the F-value which considers microbial log-linear inactivation, while microbial heat inactivation may result in a non-log-linear inactivation pattern due to genetic or phenotypical heterogeneity. This may yield discrepancies in predicting microbial heat inactivation under dynamic conditions of heat treatment. In this paper, we suggest the calculation of the equivalent time of heat treatment at a given temperature to overcome these constraints. To validate our proposal, the heat inactivation of Bacillus pumilus, showing non-log-linear behavior, was predicted for 4 d

Infective Endocarditis by Capnocytophaga Species-A Narrative Review.

Bacteria belonging to the genus Capnocytophaga are thin, capnophilic, Gram-negative bacilli with tapered ends that include nine species that are isolated from the mouth of humans and animals and, from a phylogenetical perspective, they belong to the family Flavobacteriaceae. Two more species, namely C. endodontalis and C. stomatis have been recovered from a periapical abscess and human and animal infections, respectively. Capnocytophaga spp. can cause serious and potentially life-threatening infections in humans, such as bacteremia and meningitis, most commonly in the context of penetrating tr

RWHMDA: Random Walk on Hypergraph for Microbe-Disease Association Prediction.

Based on advancements in deep sequencing technology and microbiology, increasing evidence indicates that microbes inhabiting humans modulate various host physiological phenomena, thus participating in various disease pathogeneses. Owing to increasing availability of biological data, further studies on the establishment of efficient computational models for predicting potential associations are required. In particular, computational approaches can also reduce the discovery cycle of novel microbe-disease associations and further facilitate disease treatment, drug design, and other scientific act

Correlation among fecal indicator bacteria and physicochemical parameters with the presence of Helicobacter pylori DNA in raw and drinking water from Bogotá, Colombia.

BACKGROUND: The quality of raw and drinking water is a matter of considerable concern due to the possibility of fecal contamination. To assess the quality and public health risk of different types of water, the fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) are used. However, some pathogens, such as Helicobacter pylori, may be present in water when FIB cannot be found. H pylori is recognized as the causative agent of chronic gastritis, peptic and duodenal ulcers, and gastric cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationships among physicochemical parameters, FIB concentrations, and the presence o

nirS-type denitrifying bacterial assemblages respond to environmental conditions of a shallow estuary.

Molecular analysis of dissimilatory nitrite reductase genes (nirS) was conducted using a customized microarray containing 165 nirS probes (archetypes) to identify members of sedimentary denitrifying communities. The goal of this study was to examine denitrifying community responses to changing environmental variables over spatial and temporal scales in the New River Estuary (NRE), NC, USA. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed three denitrifier assemblages and uncovered 'generalist' and 'specialist' archetypes based on the distribution of archetypes within these assemblages. Generalists,

Treatment: improvement or deterioration of water quality?

The formation of trihalomethanes through chlorination has shown very clearly that water treatment processes may adversely affect water quality. There are many more examples of such effects, including the following which are discussed in detail: 1. Formation of organohalogen compounds in addition to trihalomethanes by chlorination and other oxidation processes. 2. Formation of more polar, more biodegradable organics by ozonation for example, and the consequent increase in bacterial growth in the distribution system. 3. Formation and removal of organic and inorganic corrosion inhibitors by treat

Molecular Characterization of β-Lactam Resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) is a commensal bacterium that normally colonizes the human nasopharyngeal cavity. Once disseminated, it can cause several diseases, ranging from non-invasive infections such as acute otitis media and sinusitis through to invasive infections with higher mortality. Antibiotic resistance among S. pneumoniae has increased dramatically and penicillin-resistant strains have spread worldwide with pneumococcus also being resistant to other types of antibiotics like erythromycin, tetracycline, and chloram-phenicol. The aim of the present study was to

The bacteriological composition of biomass recovered by flushing an operational drinking water distribution system.

This study investigates the influence of pipe characteristics on the bacteriological composition of material mobilised from a drinking water distribution system (DWDS) and the impact of biofilm removal on water quality. Hydrants in a single UK Distribution Management Area (DMA) with both polyethylene and cast iron pipe sections were subjected to incremental increases in flow to mobilise material from the pipe walls. Turbidity was monitored during these operations and water samples were collected for physico-chemical and bacteriological analysis. DNA was extracted from the material mobilised in
