Cochlear microcirculation in young and old gerbils.

Human postmortem studies as well as epidemiologic investigations have implicated the peripheral vascular system as one of the etiologic factors of presbycusis. This study uses the surface dissection microsphere method for regional cochlear blood flow analysis and morphometric techniques for quantifying capillary density in the stria vascularis. In this study 11 old and 10 young gerbils were used. Our results indicate that blood flow in the cochlea was decreased in the old gerbils. This decrease was most obvious in the lateral portion (stria vascularis). The decrease of blood flow in older anim

[Hemostasis and microcirculation in patients with diabetic ketosis].

Indices of acid-base equilibrium (ABE), the level of ketone bodies, coagulation and platelet procoagulant hemostasis, and erythrocyte aggregation were studied in 102 patients with diabetes mellitus, of them in 58 patients with diabetic ketoacidosis and in 10 practically healthy persons. The most frequent cause of the development of diabetic ketoacidosis was poorly controlled treatment of diabetes and infections. The most frequent type of ABE disorder in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis was metabolic acidosis with secondary compensatory respiratory alkalosis. Ketoacidosis was characterized b

The intracerebral microcirculation of the rat in hemorrhagic shock.

The intracerebral microcirculation of the isocortex was studied in unanesthetized rats under hemorrhagic shock. To observe the microvessels, three markers were separately injected intravenously during the shock period: (a) Evans blue for fluorescence microscopic visualization of the vessels. (b) India ink for gross and light microscopic evidence of retention of carbon. (c) Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) for light and electron microscopic study. Lack of spontaneous recovery from shock was associated with: (a) 55-65% blood loss, a low blood pressure (30-40 mm Hg), and a dramatic increase in pulse

Laryngeal microcirculation and pathways of cancer spread.

The microcirculation of the human larynx was studied in cleared anatomic specimens. The distribution of the endolaryngeal blood supply was constant enough to permit naming of the subdivisions of the superior and inferior laryngeal arteries. There was a remarkable correlation between arteriolar and capillary distribution and the laryngeal routes of cancer spread within the larynx. Compartmentalization of the larynx was not apparent. The paraglottic space was filled with blood vessels.

Diseases of the Coronary Microcirculation: Diagnosis and Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) comprises a variety of pathogenic mechanisms that impair the microcirculation of the heart. Clinical studies have shown that 30-50% of patients suffering from myocardial ischemia without significant coronary artery stenosis have CMD. The disease is associated with ele - vated mortality and poor quality of life. Whenever a patient presents with symptoms of angina pectoris and no underlying disease is detected by the usual methods, CMD should be considered a possible cause. METHODS: This review is based on publications retrieved by a selectiv

Effects of Fluids on the Sublingual Microcirculation in Sepsis.

Sepsis is one of the most common and deadly syndromes faced in Intensive Care settings globally. Recent advances in bedside imaging have defined the changes in the microcirculation in sepsis. One of the most advocated interventions for sepsis is fluid therapy. Whether or not fluid bolus affects the microcirculation in sepsis has not been fully addressed in the literature. This systematic review of the evidence aims to collate studies examining the microcirculatory outcomes after a fluid bolus in patients with sepsis. We will assimilate the evidence for using handheld intra vital microscopes to

Novelties in the evaluation of microcirculation in septic shock.

Microvascular alterations were first described in critically ill patients about 20 years ago. These alterations are characterized by a decrease in vascular density and presence of non-perfused capillaries close to well-perfused vessels. In addition, heterogeneity in microvascular perfusion is a key finding in sepsis. In this narrative review, we report our actual understanding of microvascular alterations, their role in the development of organ dysfunction, and the implications for outcome. Herein, we discuss the state of the potential therapeutic interventions and the potential impact of nove

Evaluation of Peripapillary Microcirculation in Patients with Acromegaly.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) and the optic nerve head (ONH) perfusion of patients with acromegaly using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS: Twenty-four eyes of 24 acromegaly patients comprised the study group and 24 eyes of 24 healthy individuals were used as a control group. The ONH and RPC vascular density (VD) was measured for each patient using OCTA. The insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels were also recorded and compared. RESULTS: The VD of the inferior nasal ONH and nasal RPC was significantly lo

The impact of thrombo-inflammation on the cerebral microcirculation.

The intertwined processes of thrombosis and inflammation (termed "thrombo-inflammation") are significant drivers of cerebrovascular diseases, and as such, they represent prime targets for drug discovery programs focusing on treatment and management of cerebrovascular diseases. Most cerebrovascular events result from chronic systemic microcirculatory dysfunction due to underlying conditions, for example, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, dyslipidemia, and sickle cell disease. Immune cells especially neutrophils play a critical role in the onset and maintenance of neuroin

Hepatic microcirculation and mechanisms of portal hypertension.

The liver microcirculatory milieu, mainly composed of liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs), hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and hepatic macrophages, has an essential role in liver homeostasis, including in preserving hepatocyte function, regulating the vascular tone and controlling inflammation. Liver microcirculatory dysfunction is one of the key mechanisms that promotes the progression of chronic liver disease (also termed cirrhosis) and the development of its major clinical complication, portal hypertension. In the present Review, we describe the current knowledge of liver microcirculat

Adaptation of the Cutaneous Microcirculation in Preterm Neonates.

OBJECTIVE: Transition from fetal to neonatal circulation is characterized by multiple hemodynamic changes. The role of the microcirculation in this process is underexposed. Visualizing the cutaneous microcirculation can help us understand peripheral perfusion in a noninvasive manner. METHODS: Cutaneous microcirculation of term and preterm infants born below 32 weeks of GA was measured in the first month of life using IDF imaging. Linear mixed modeling was used to identify clinical variables which influence the cutaneous microcirculation. RESULTS: Sixty preterm and 33 term infants were includ

Alteration of intrahepatic microcirculation in cirrhotic livers.

From a hemodynamic point of view, hepatic vascular resistance and portal inflow determine the level of portal pressure. Factors that determine hepatic vascular resistance include both structural and dynamic components. Among the structural components are histological characteristics such as steatosis, fibrosis, regeneration nodules, and neo-angiogenesis. Dynamic structures include cells with contractile properties such as hepatocytes, hepatic stellate cells, sinusoidal endothelial cells, and Kupffer cells. The contributions of the interactions between four cells in cirrhotic livers resulted in

Regulation of muscle microcirculation in health and diabetes.

Insulin increases microvascular perfusion and substrate exchange surface area in muscle, which is pivotal for hormone action and substrate exchange, by activating insulin signaling cascade in the endothelial cells to produce nitric oxide. This action of insulin is closely coupled with its metabolic action and type 2 diabetes is associated with both metabolic and microvascular insulin resistance. Muscle microvascular perfusion/volume can be assessed by 1-methylxanthine metabolism, contrast-enhanced ultrasound and positron emission tomography. In addition to insulin, several factors have been sh

The effects of hyperhomocysteinemia on the microcirculation of skin flaps.

BACKGROUND: Hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for atherothrombotic disease and venous thrombosis. The effects of hyperhomocysteinemia on the microcirculation were studied in vascular diseases. The authors aimed to investigate the effects of hyperhomocysteinemia on the microcirculation of random-pattern skin flaps. METHODS: Twenty-two male Sprague-Dawley rats, divided into two groups, were used in this study. The rats in group 1 (control) were fed the TD.07112 diet, and the rats in group 2 (experimental group) were fed the TD.07114 diet, enriched in methionine for 30 days, to

Sickle cell blood flow in the microcirculation.

The clinical symptomology, as well as the subclinical sequela, of sickle-cell (S-C) disease, or anemia, is thought to be largely the consequence of abnormal events in the capillaries, resulting primarily from theological changes SC erythrocytes undergo when deoxygenated. A model of the flow of such RBCs in a single capillary was formulated taking into account the principal characteristics of the disease. This has been extended to a microcirculatory bed, generated in a pseudo-random manner. S-C disease is characterized by episodic painful and debilitating clinical events, called S-C "crisis". T

Abnormalities of microcirculation in glaucoma: facts and hints.

Many risk factors associated with glaucoma have been identified recently. The best known of these is increased intraocular pressure (IOP). Among the others, however, vascular risk factors play a major role. Although such vascular factors were already postulated more than 100 years ago, only recent technical developments have afforded systematic investigations of associated microcirculatory disturbances and basic principles of blood flow regulation. In glaucoma, besides IOP, vascular dysregulation (such as local vasospasm and systemic hypotension, resulting in impaired autoregulation of blood f
