Hydantoanabaenopeptins from Lake Kinneret Microcystis Bloom, Isolation, and Structure Elucidation of the Possible Intermediates in the Anabaenopeptins Biosynthesis.

Anabaenopeptins are common metabolites of cyanobacteria. In the course of reisolation of the known aeruginosins KT608A and KT608B for bioassay studies, we noticed the presence of some unknown anabaenopeptins in the extract of a Microcystis cell mass collected during the 2016 spring bloom event in Lake Kinneret, Israel. The 1H NMR spectra of some of these compounds presented a significant difference in the appearance of the ureido bridge protons, and their molecular masses did not match any one of the 152 known anabaenopeptins. Analyses of the 1D and 2D NMR, HRMS, and MS/MS spectra of the new c

Investigation of a Microcystis aeruginosa cyanobacterial freshwater harmful algal bloom associated with acute microcystin toxicosis in a dog.

Microcystin poisoning was diagnosed in a dog exposed to a Microcystis aeruginosa-dominated, freshwater, harmful algal bloom at Milford Lake, Kansas, which occurred during the summer of 2011. Lake water microcystin concentrations were determined at intervals during the summer, using competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, and indicated extremely high, localized microcystin concentrations of up to 126,000 ng/ml. Multiple extraction and analysis techniques were used in the determination of free and total microcystins in vomitus and liver samples from the poisoned dog. Vomitus and liver co

Phenyllactic acid exposure suppresses Microcystis aeruginosa growth with concurrent PSII photochemical impairment and increased extracellular microcystin accumulation.

Phenyllactic acid (PLA) has been reported as a bioactive organic acid with anticyanobacterial potential, but its direct ecotoxicological effects on toxin-producing Microcystis aeruginosa remain insufficiently understood. In this study, purified PLA was used to evaluate its effects on the growth, photosynthetic physiology, antioxidant enzyme response and microcystin distribution of M. aeruginosa FACHB-915. Results indicated that PLA inhibited algal growth in a concentration-dependent manner after 48 h exposure with an estimated IC50 value of 158.3 mg·L-1, and high PLA exposure markedly reduced

Unraveling the Toxicity of a Non-Microcystin-Producing Strain (CCIBt3106) of Microcystis aeruginosa: Ecotoxicological Effects on Aquatic Invertebrates.

Cyanobacterial blooms are becoming increasingly frequent and intense worldwide, often dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa, a species capable of producing a wide array of bioactive metabolites beyond microcystins. This study evaluates the ecotoxicological potential of a non-microcystin-producing strain, M. aeruginosa CCIBt3106, using acute immobilization assays with three microcrustacean species: Daphnia similis, Artemia salina, and Parhyale hawaiensis. Biomass was extracted using solvents of varying polarity, and selected extracts (aqueous and 50% methanol) were further fractionated and analyz

Investigation of dissolved organic matter's influence on the toxicity of cadmium to the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa by biochemical and molecular assays.

Rapid economic development has increased the accumulation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and heavy metals in aquatic environments. In addition, Microcystis aeruginosa can cause the outbreak of cyanobacteria bloom and can produce microcystin, which poses a threat to human water safety. Therefore, this study analyzed the biochemical and molecular assays of DOM (0, 1, 3, 5, 8, 10 mg C L-1) extracted from four different sources on the toxicity of cadmium (Cd) to M. aeruginosa. The results showed that the addition of different concentrations of DOM from sediment, biochar, and humic acid alleviat

Drinking water treatment residual as a ballast to sink Microcystis cyanobacteria and inactivate phosphorus in tropical lake water.

The combination of a low dose of coagulant with a ballast that can inactive phosphorus (P) in lake sediment-a technique known as "flock and lock"-is one method for restoration of eutrophic lakes. The effectiveness of a drinking water treatment residual (DWTR) as a ballast in flock and lock was assessed using assays of eutrophic lake water from Thailand dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa cyanobacteria colonies by measuring changes in chlorophyll-a, pH, and zeta potential. P sorption isotherms were developed from long-term batch equilibrium experiments; desorption of nutrients and metals was as

Non-microcystin extracellular metabolites of Microcystis aeruginosa impair viability and reproductive gene expression in rainbow trout cell lines.

Microcystis aeruginosa is a ubiquitous freshwater cyanobacterium best known for producing hepatotoxic microcystins; however, this common bloom-forming species also produces myriad biologically active and potentially deleterious other metabolites. Our understanding of the effects of these non-microcystin metabolites on fish is limited. In this study, we evaluated cytotoxicity of extracellular metabolites harvested from both microcystin-producing (MC+) and non-producing (MC-) strains of M. aeruginosa on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) cell lines derived from tissues of the brain, pituitary,

The β-Lactamase Activity at the Community Level Confers β-Lactam Resistance to Bloom-Forming Microcystis aeruginosa Cells.

Many freshwater cyanobacteria, including Microcystis aeruginosa, lack several known antibiotic resistance genes; however, both axenic and xenic M. aeruginosa strains exhibited high antibiotic resistance against many antibiotics under our tested concentrations, including colistin, trimethoprim, and kanamycin. Interestingly, axenic PCC7806, although not the xenic NIBR18 and NIBR452 strains, displayed susceptibility to ampicillin and amoxicillin, indicating that the associated bacteria in the phycosphere could confer such antibiotic resistance to xenic strains. Solar-light-driven inactivation of toxigenic Microcystis by floating photocatalytic mesh system: Insights on physiological mechanism and application.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) pose serious ecological and health risks with releasing waterborne toxins. In this study, a novel floating Bi2WO6-based photocatalytic mesh (BPM) system was developed for efficient water purification by targeting the inactivation of HABs-dominated Microcystis and detoxification of associated microcystins (MCs) under solar light irradiation. The superior flotation, durability and sunlight utilization of the BPM system were achieved by its super-hydrophobic surface, robust stainless-steel mesh carrier, and efficient light transmission, respectively. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) reveals high genetic diversity and clonal population structure of the toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa.

Microcystis aeruginosa is one of the most prevalent bloom-forming cyanobacteria and has been the cause of increasing public health concern due to the production of hepatotoxins (microcystins). To investigate the genetic diversity, clonality and evolutionary genetic background with regard to the toxicity of M. aeruginosa, a multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme was developed, based on seven selected housekeeping loci (ftsZ, glnA, gltX, gyrB, pgi, recA and tpi). Analysis of a collection of 164 isolates from Japan and other countries identified 79 unique sequence types (STs), revealing a high

Mechanistic study of bisphenol A on the growth and microcystin production of Microcystis aeruginosa at different nitrogen levels revealed by the metabolomic analysis.

Water safety problems caused by cyanobacterial blooms, resulting from excessive inputs of anthropogenic pollutants, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus nutrients, have become a significant environmental issue. Limited knowledge exists regarding the mechanisms regulating the toxic by-products synthesized by cyanobacterial cells, especially the hepatotoxin microcystins (MCs). Here, the regulatory mechanisms of bisphenol A (BPA) on the growth and MCs production of Microcystis aeruginosa at different N levels were investigated using metabolomic analysis. The results indicated that the number of cyanobacte

Environmentally relevant concentrations of the antibiotic azithromycin enhance the toxicity of the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa on the water flea Daphnia similis.

Artificial eutrophication has degraded water bodies worldwide, promoting harmful cyanobacterial blooms (CyanoHABs). In addition to nutrient loading, antibiotics are increasingly being introduced into aquatic environments, exacerbating water pollution, and the impact on biota. Among antibiotics, azithromycin (AZT) has displayed a rise in environmental occurrence following its increased global consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, we assessed the effect of environmentally relevant concentrations of AZT (≤3 μg l-1) on the interaction between the toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis aer

Removal of the Active Pharmaceutical Substance Entecavir from Water via the Fenton Reaction or Action by the Cyanobacterium Microcystis novacekii.

Entecavir (ETV) is an antiviral used to treat chronic infection caused by the hepatitis B virus, which affects approximately 250 million people worldwide. In order to mitigate the impacts of ETV on the environment, including potential harm to human health, this study evaluated the use of the Fenton-like reaction, which uses iron complexed with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) at neutral pH, and the microbiological action of Microcystis novacekii in removing ETV from the aqueous medium. Aqueous concentrations of 100 mg/L were subjected to Fenton-like degradation. Solutions ranging from 1.

Hepatocyte apoptosis is triggered by hepatic inflammation in common carp acutely exposed to microcystin-LR or chronically exposed to Microcystis.

Cyanobacterial blooms pose a serious threat to the survival of fish because of the hepatotoxicity of microcystins produced by toxic cyanobacteria such as Microcystis. Many studies have investigated the hepatotoxicity of microcystins in common carp, a freshwater fish distributed worldwide, but the hepatotoxicity mechanism has not been fully clarified. The present study aimed to investigate the mechanism underlying the hepatic inflammatory response and hepatocyte apoptosis induced by acute microcystin-LR exposure via intraperitoneal injection (71 μg/kg and 119 μg/kg) or gavage (357.08 μg/kg) and

Challenges of using blooms of Microcystis spp. in animal feeds: A comprehensive review of nutritional, toxicological and microbial health evaluation.

Microcystis spp., are Gram-negative, oxygenic, photosynthetic prokaryotes which use solar energy to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) and minerals into organic compounds and biomass. Eutrophication, rising CO2 concentrations and global warming are increasing Microcystis blooms globally. Due to its high availability and protein content, Microcystis biomass has been suggested as a protein source for animal feeds. This would reduce dependency on soybean and other agricultural crops and could make use of "waste" biomass when Microcystis scums and blooms are harvested. Besides proteins, Microcystis cont

Quaternized chitosan-coordinated metal-azolate framework: Core-bridge-shell composite for electrostatic flocculation and long-term Microcystis aeruginosa inhibition.

Harmful algal blooms dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) threaten aquatic ecosystems and public health. Traditional treatment methods had limitations of temporary effects or slow response. To address these issues, this study designed a multifunctional CTA-CS/M composite with flocculation and long-term algal inhibition, which constructed "metal-azolate frameworks (M) core - chitosan (CS) bridge - 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (CTA) shell" hierarchical structure constructed via CS/M coordination and covalent grafting of CTA onto CS. CTA-CS/M was systematical

Individual and combined toxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics and clothianidin toward Daphnia magna, Lemna minor, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, and Microcystis aeruginosa.

Nanoplastics (NPs) and neonicotinoids are common pollutants in aquatic ecosystems. Although their co-occurrence is expected in multiple environments, studies assessing their combined effects are still limited. This toxicological assessment investigated the potential effects of polystyrene NPs (PSNPs), clothianidin (CLO), and their mixtures on four aquatic species: the freshwater cladoceran Daphnia magna, the duckweed Lemna minor, the green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, and the cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa. Phosphorus accelerate the sulfur cycle by promoting the release of malodorous volatile organic sulfur compounds from Microcystis in freshwater lakes.

Volatile organic sulfur compounds (VSCs) released by algae are of great significance in sulfur cycle, climate regulation and biological information transmission, and they also caused taste and odor in freshwaters. However, the categories, sources, and environmental regulatory factors of VSCs in freshwaters were less known. Here, we show that eight common freshwater cyanobacterium Microcystis, which bloom in freshwaters over the world, are found to be important producers of VSCs. Dimethyl sulfide (DMS), dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and isopropyl methyl sulfide (IPMS) are the main VSCs with the hig
