Mushroom Lentinula edodes has been widely studied therapeutically. However, there is no data regarding its daily intake level safety. Since L. edodes has many active compounds known to bind to metals, we evaluated macro and micronutrients in liver and kidney of healthy rats after subchronic exposure to L. edodes. Rats were divided into four groups, receiving water and L. edodes at 100, 400 and 800 mg/kg/day. The treatment lasted 30 days. Essential elements (Zn, Cu, Mg, Fe, Mn, Se, Co, Mo, and Li) were analyzed in an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. Our results demonstrated a signi

Linear growth retardation or stunting may occur with or without low weight-for-age, but in both cases stunted or moderately malnourished children are deficient in micronutrients. Pregnancy and the first 2 years are critical periods. Dietary deficiency of zinc, iron, calcium, and vitamin A are especially common and often occur together. Zinc is essential for adequate growth, and supplements have been shown to increase intrauterine femur length and to prevent stunting. However, in general, supplements which provide a mixture of micronutrients have been more successful in preventing stunting and

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present clinical pilot study was to examine the influence of a combination of micronutrients on individuals with high stress experience.
METHODS: 40 healthy students (28 female, 12 male) with a mean age of 27.1 ± 3.0 years, experiencing high examination stress, were chosen. After approval of the ethics commission, one group of students (n = 19) took a combination of micronutrients (Orthomol vital m/f) for three months, whereas other students (n = 21) served as control group. All participants underwent at the beginning and at the end of the trial a dental examination,

Epidemiological surveys of the pattern of nutrition in the Chuvash Republic were conducted by the Department of Consumer Supervision of the Chuvash Republic to reveal the regional features of the levels of nutrients in a diet. To accomplish this goal, the authors developed an algorithm for studying the organized and unorganized collectives. A regional dietary trace element database was set up and the endemic problems of an area were specified. Significant dietary selenium deficiency and moderate iron and manganese deficiencies were cardinal problems in the population's nutrition in the Chuvash

Despite trace elements and vitamins are major public health problems in some African countries, there are few studies reporting micronutrient status in North Africa. Therefore, it could be interesting to evaluate plasma concentrations of vitamin A, E and beta-cartene, along with zinc, copper, selenium erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase in Algeria. Volunteers were randomly recruited in Constantine, Batna and Mila. Vitamins, trace elements and enzymes were measured in the University Hospital of Grenoble. 455 persons were included in the study. Subjects were divided in 3

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Low micronutrient levels in critical illness have been reported in multiple studies. Because of the antioxidant properties of various micronutrients, micronutrient deficiency may augment oxidative stress in critical illness. However, it remains unclear whether micronutrient concentrations in ICU patients are different from those in healthy age-matched controls. It is also unclear whether micronutrient deficiency develops, worsens, or resolves during ICU admission without supplementation.
METHODS: We prospectively studied a cohort of adult critically ill patients. Micronutri

Micronutrients play an important role in the proper growth and development of the human body and its deficiency affects the health contributing to low productivity and vicious cycle of malnutrition, underdevelopment as well as poverty. Micronutrient deficiency is a public health problem affecting more than one-fourth of the global population. Several programmes have been launched over the years in India to improve nutrition and health status of the population; however, a large portion of the population is still affected by micronutrient deficiency. Anaemia, the most common form of micronutrien

INTRODUCTION: In past decades, the growth in obesity has been associated with changes in the lifestyle of the population, including comprehensive dietary changes, especially in the intake of micronutrients.
OBJECTIVE: To describe micronutrient intake and review its consequences on nutritional status.
METHODS: A literature review was performed covering domestic and international articles published over the past 11 years, on the SciELO, LILACS, MEDLINE and governmental databases, using descriptors such as "micronutrients", "food consumption", "excess weight", "health", "nutritional status" in

The relationship between four micronutrient deficiencies (iodine, iron, zinc and vitamin B-12) and children's cognitive functioning is reviewed. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy has negative and irreversible effects on the developing fetus. Although there is some evidence that postnatal iodine deficiency is associated with cognitive deficits, the findings are controversial. Iron deficiency is widespread and has been associated to cognitive deficits, but the results of prevention trials are inconsistent. Zinc deficiency has been linked with low activity and depressed motor development among t

Recent estimates indicate that globally over two billion people are at risk for vitamin A, iodine, and/or iron deficiency, in spite of recent efforts in the prevention and control of these deficiencies. The prevalence is especially high in Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, and pregnant women and young children are at greatest risk. Other micronutrient deficiencies of public health concern include zinc, folate, and the B vitamins. However, there is limited data on the actual prevalence of these deficiencies. Finally, in many settings, more than one micronutrient deficiency exists, suggesti

Nutrition is a critical determinant of the outcome of host microbe interactions through a modulation of the immune response. Besides macronutrient malnutrition, deficiencies of several macronutrients also influence immune homeostasis and thus affect infection-related morbidity and mortality. Deficiencies of micronutrients like vitamin A, iron and zinc are widely prevalent among populations living in developing countries. Besides their severe deficiencies, subclinical deficiencies are known to impair biological functions in the host, immune function being one of them. The effects of these micro

The importance of micronutrient deficiencies to child survival and to the health and development of nations is universally recognized. Over two billion people, or more than one in three individuals, are at risk of iron, vitamin A and iodine deficiencies. More than 13 million people suffer night blindness or total blindness due to vitamin A deficiency; severe iron deficiency accounts for one in five maternal deaths and one-third of all young children are anaemic; iodine deficiency affects 50 million children and is the greatest single preventable cause of intellectual impairment, as well as a m

BACKGROUND: Rwanda's commitment to reducing malnutrition is evident in their multisectoral nutrition policy and wide array of nutrition partners. However, the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies and the suitability of current strategies to address existing deficiencies is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To review the available evidence related to the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies across the life cycle and strategies in place to address them.
METHODS: We reviewed scientific and grey literature on nutritional problems in Rwanda, emphasizing micronutrient deficiencies and anemia, and curren

Micronutrients are essential to sustain life and for optimal physiological function. Widespread global micronutrient deficiencies (MNDs) exist, with pregnant women and their children under 5 years at the highest risk. Iron, iodine, folate, vitamin A, and zinc deficiencies are the most widespread MNDs, and all these MNDs are common contributors to poor growth, intellectual impairments, perinatal complications, and increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Iron deficiency is the most common MND worldwide and leads to microcytic anemia, decreased capacity for work, as well as impaired immune and

The present study was performed, to analyse the inter-relationship among trace elements: Iron, copper and zinc in pregnancy. Eighty-four pregnant women were compared with 30 age matched nonpregnant healthy controls. Fasting blood samples were analysed for heamoglobin, iron, copper and zinc. On the basis of Hb concentration (<10g/dl) and iron levels(<50microg/dl), the pregnant women were sub-grouped as anaemic, non-anaemic, Iron deficient anaemic and non-iron deficient anaemic. The level of copper was found to be significantly higher in iron deficiency anaemia, when compared to non-iron deficie

Micronutrient deficiencies have been found in obese individuals across age groups worldwide. While the effects of micronutrient deficiencies on human functions have been studied widely in different populations, there is limited information on how these micronutrient deficiencies affect obese populations. An examination of the available literature suggests associations exist between micronutrient deficiencies and obesity in different populations. These associations and possible mechanisms of the deficiencies' metabolic effects, such as their influence on leptin and insulin metabolism, are discu

The economic situation of Indonesia is characterized by a large increase in the gross national product which has been on average 7% annually during the last ten years. This was accompanied by rapid urbanization. With the economic improvement, "First World" and "Third World" health and nutrition problems are coexisting in Indonesia. In 1992, the most common of death cause was cardiovascular disease whereas tuberculosis was the second ranking. About 40% of the preschool children are stunted. The main stable food and energy source is rice, although the urban population has a more diverse food pat

Micronutrient malnutrition, particularly vitamin A deficiency (VAD), iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) and iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), poses a serious threat to the health of vulnerable segments of population. Dietary Inadequacy is the primary cause of VAD and IDA, while poor iodine content of soil and water due to environmental iodine deficiency is the main determinant of IDD. Three major intervention strategies are available for the control of micronutrient malnutrition: supplementation of the specific micronutrients; fortification of foods with micronutrients; and horticulture interventi
