Tinea capitis is a type of dermatophyte infection primarily affecting children. We report a case of an elderly woman with well-controlled diabetes mellitus presenting with a six-month history of erythema with yellow crusts on her scalp and extensive erythematous patches with scales on the body skin. She adopted a stray cat before the disease onset. Dermoscopic findings and manifestation under the Wood's lamp favoured the diagnosis of tinea capitis. Further microscopic examinations of her scalp, including direct KOH and fluorescence stain examination, fungal culture and polymerase chain reactio

Three boys from the same city, treated by the same dermatologist, developed tinea capitis. Two of them, 4 and 8 years old, underwent mycological diagnostic workup. However, no pathogens familiar in this country, such as Microsporum (M.) canis or Trichophyton (T.) tonsurans, were isolated, but instead that of a dermatophyte that has not been found in Germany for decades. Both dermatophyte isolates showed white-beige-brownish colonies with a flat, radiating edge and a central, verrucous curvature. The sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the rDNA confirmed the suspicion

Microsporum gypseum is a geographically widespread geophilic fungus that infects animals and humans. M. gypseum infection on the scrotum is very rare and can be easily misdiagnosed because of a lack of inflammatory reaction. Here we describe a patient with pseudomembranous-like tinea of the scrotum resulting from M. gypseum.

Clinical and laboratory data from 22 children with tinea corporis and tinea capitis caused by Microsporum canis (10 tinea corporis, 12 tinea capitis), confirmed by microscopic examination and culture and partly pretreated with griseofulvin or terbinafine, are summarized. The children were treated consecutively with itraconazole in our clinic during 1994/95. The age of the children ranged between 4 and 13 years, with girls being affected much more frequently than boys. Oral, individually adapted, high-dose treatment of 5 mg itraconazole per kg body weight proved to be successful. In all 22 chil

A case of tinea pedis caused by a dual infection with Trichophyton rubrum and Microsporum canis is reported. It is of particular interest because infections of the toe webs caused by M. canis are uncommon and the combination of T. rubrum and M. canis has not been reported. In addition, a marked difference in response to treatment with an imidazole (bifonazole) was observed.

Five cases of tinea corporis in children by Microsporum gypseum are presented. In four of them an endothrix type of parasitism with arthrospores 4 to 8 microns in diameter was observed. In the other case ectothrix and endothrix types of parasitism were seen in different hairs. Endothrix infection of hairs by species of the genus Microsporum has not been clearly demonstrated until the present. Three isolates were identified as Nannazzia gypsea of the "+" mating type.

Deep dermatophytosis in the genital region is rare and often misdiagnosed due to its inflammatory presentation mimicking bacterial or other dermatoses. We report the case of a 23-year-old woman presenting with painful, exudative plaques in the pubogenital area. Initial empirical antibiotic therapy failed. Fungal culture revealed Microsporum canis. Treatment with systemic terbinafine followed by itraconazole led to clinical improvement. The lesion healed with scarring alopecia and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Given the overlapping features with both kerion and Majocchi granuloma, this c

Tinea incognito is an incorrectly diagnosed form of fungal infection due to a changed clinical picture as a result of systemic or topical corticosteroids or even local immunomodulators. This type of skin lesion is most often located on the trunk but can affect any part of the body. We present a case report of 76-year-old woman with a history of systemic lupus erythematosus who was admitted to hospital because of extensive, painful, and burning erythematous and papular lesions in an annular pattern, covered with a thick, yellow crust, located on the scalp and neck. The skin lesions were accompa

Microsporum gypseum is a geophilic saprophyte for which soil is the natural habitat. Tinea corporis caused by Microsporum gypseum is rare and usually occurs after direct contact with the soil or healthy carrier animals. We present a case series of eight children with tinea corporis caused by M gypseum, with unusual clinic presentations mimicking dermatitis.

Microsporum gypseum infections are 0.4% of 4900 suspected dermatomycoses examined with direct microscopic exam and culture on Lactrimel medium or D.T.M. This geophilic dermatophyte was isolated in 20 cases (1.5% of all dermatophytes). More frequently M. gypseum caused tinea corporis (13 cases: 65%) and rarely tinea capitis (2 cases: 10%), tinea faciei (2 cases), tinea manus (2 cases) and tinea cruris (1 case). Both sexes are equally affected. Direct microscopic exam was negative in 2 cases. This dermatophyte was more frequently isolated during the summer and fall. Finally M. gypseum was not is

Keratinophilic fungi are mostly soil-inhabiting organisms with occasional infections in humans and animals. Even though most dermatophytes are host-adapted, cross-species infections are common by zoophilic and geophilic dermatophytes. N. nana is considered an etiological agent of ringworm in pigs but has also been isolated from other animals, including humans. However, it also possesses many characteristics of geophilic dermatophytes including the ability to grow in soil. N. nana produces characteristic pear-shaped macroconidia and usually exhibits an ectothrix pattern of hair infection. It ha

Microsporum gypseum, a geophillic dermatophyte is rarely isolated from patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. We report tinea corporis due to Microsporum gypseum, an uncommon aetiological agent, in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome from our region. The clinical presentation resembled psoriasis characterised by atypical, scaly and hyperkeratotic lesions.

An eight-year-old neutered female Persian cat with a four-year history of relapsing skin disease, characterised by ulcerated nodules with a yellow granular discharge, was examined. A diagnosis of granulomatous dermatitis and panniculitis (pseudomycetoma) caused by Microsporum canis was made on the basis of history, clinical signs, histopathological examination of skin biopsy specimens and culture of macerated tissue. Because previous therapy, comprising repeated surgical excision and the administration of griseofulvin and itraconazole, had not been successful, terbinafine was administered for

Microsporum canis infection was induced in 21 healthy SPF-derived cats. Once infection was established (4 weeks after inoculation) the cats were divided into three equal groups housed in separate rooms and monitored for 16 weeks. During this time, group A cats received oral griseofulvin at approximately 50 mg/kg daily and were shampooed twice weekly with a product containing chlorhexidine and miconazole. Group B cats were treated with griseofulvin alone, and group C cats served as untreated controls. The cats were examined on a weekly basis and the severity of lesions was scored semi-quantitat

Microsporum gypseum is not a common agent of human dermatophytosis. To the best of our knowledge, this fungus has not been described in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. We report a tinea corporis infection with atypical presentation caused by M. gypseum in two patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) studied at the São Paulo Hospital (São Paulo, Brazil).

A black man with subcutaneous mycetomas caused by Microsporum audouinii was treated by a combination of griseofulvin, 18.5 g of amphotericin B, excisional surgery, and later, ketoconazole, resulting in a satisfactory arrest or cure of the clinical illness. Complications of therapy included residual impaired renal function and a change in hair color from black to a rust brown color. The continued use of the term mycetoma to describe such lesions is justified.
