Chocolate craving and disordered eating. Beyond the gender divide?

Chocolate craving in women has previously been linked to disordered eating behaviors. A relatively higher prevalence of eating disorder pathology may account for the fact that chocolate craving is significantly more common in women in North America, compared to many other countries. While support for a causal role of disordered eating in the etiology of craving in women is growing, little is known about the extent to which food cravings are associated with disordered eating behaviors in men. This study was designed to systematically assess the impact of gender and chocolate craving on measures

Prevalence of tooth agenesis and peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisor associated with palatally displaced canine (PDC) anomaly.

Fifty-eight nonsyndromic North American white orthodontic patients with palatal displacement of one or both maxillary canine teeth were studied for associated tooth agenesis and peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors. Agenesis of permanent teeth was identified by x-ray film analysis. Conical crown-size reduction (peg-shape anomaly) of the maxillary lateral incisor (l2) was determined by direct observation. Increases in absence of third molars and second premolars associated with the palatally displaced canine (PDC) anomaly were statistically very highly significant compared with normative data

Implementation of the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations to reduce sudden infant death syndrome risk in neonatal intensive care units: An evaluation of nursing knowledge and practice.

UNLABELLED: There is a direct relationship between nonsupine sleeping and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Premature infants are at greater risk for SIDS and are often cared for in nonsupine positions during the course of hospitalization. Healthy premature infants should be placed supine for sleep before discharge from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and parents receive specific instruction about infant sleep position and other risk factors for SIDS. Most published literature addressing nursing practices for SIDS reduction reflects practices with the healthy newborn population. P

Detection of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato species in host-seeking Ixodes species ticks in the United States.

Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in the United States and is transmitted by Ixodes scapularis in the eastern US and I. pacificus in the west. The causative agents, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (Bbss) and B. mayonii belong to the B. burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl) species complex. An additional eight species of Bbsl have been identified in Ixodes species ticks in the US, but their geographic distribution, vector associations, human encounter rates and pathogenicity in humans are poorly defined. To better understand the geographic distribution and vector associ

Tick-borne illness in Rhode Island - how big a problem is it?

Rhode Island is a state with a high incidence of tick-borne diseases, specifically Lyme disease. The Ioxedes tick which serves as vector for the three most common tick infections is endemic in both the New England and mid-Atlantic regions. However, differences in the density of infections exist within Rhode Island (RI), with the highest densities in the southern counties. Tick-borne diseases can have varying presentations, as well as varied response to appropriate treatment leading to many questions and confusion for patients, clinicians, and the public itself.

Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) and gonadotropin-releasing hormones (GnRH) in Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua: tissue distributions, early ontogeny and effects of fasting.

Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) is classically known for its role in regulating teleost fish skin color change for environmental adaptation. Recent evidence suggests that MCH also has appetite-stimulating properties. The gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) peptide family has dual roles in endocrine control of reproduction and energy status in fish. Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) are a commercially important aquaculture species inhabiting the shores of Atlantic Canada. In this study, we examine MCH and GnRH transcript expression profiles during early development as well as in central and per

Impact of COVID-19 on electroconvulsive therapy practice across Canadian provinces during the first wave of the pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a procedural treatment that is potentially life-saving for some patients with severe psychiatric illness. At the start of the global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, ECT practice was remarkably disrupted, putting vulnerable individuals at increased risk of symptom exacerbation and death by suicide. This study aimed to capture the self-reported experiences of psychiatrists based at healthcare facilities across Canadian provinces who were delivering ECT treatments during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e., from mid-March 202

Vulnerability to COVID-19-related Harms Among Transgender Women With and Without HIV Infection in the Eastern and Southern U.S.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 is a new pandemic, and its impact by HIV status is unknown. National reporting does not include gender identity; therefore, data are absent on the impact of COVID-19 on transgender people, including those with HIV. Baseline data from the American Cohort to Study HIV Acquisition Among Transgender Women in High Risk Areas (LITE) Study provide an opportunity to examine pre-COVID factors that may increase vulnerability to COVID-19-related harms among transgender women. SETTING: Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Miami, New York City, Washington, DC. METHODS: Baseline data from LITE

Ethylene glycol ethers and risks of spontaneous abortion and subfertility.

Potential reproductive effects from occupational exposures to ethylene glycol ethers (EGE) are of concern since these organic solvents have been used widely in industry, and their reproductive toxicity has been well documented in animal studies. For determination of whether occupational exposure to EGE was associated with increased risks of spontaneous abortion and subfertility (i.e., taking more than 1 year of unprotected intercourse to conceive), a retrospective cohort study was conducted among workers at two semiconductor manufacturing plants in the eastern United States in 1980-1989 as par

Geographic uniformity of the Lyme disease spirochete (Borrelia burgdorferi) and its shared history with tick vector (Ixodes scapularis) in the Northeastern United States.

Over 80% of reported cases of Lyme disease in the United States occur in coastal regions of northeastern and mid-Atlantic states. The genetic structure of the Lyme disease spirochete (Borrelia burgdorferi) and its main tick vector (Ixodes scapularis) was studied concurrently and comparatively by sampling natural populations of I. scapularis ticks along the East Coast from 1996 to 1998. Borrelia is genetically highly diverse at the outer surface protein ospC. Since Borrelia is highly clonal, the ospC alleles can be used to define clones. A newly designed reverse line blotting (RLB) assay shows

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-related blastomycosis in an unusual geographic location.

Blastomycosis is a fungal infection acquired via inhalation of Blastomyces dermatitidis. The majority of cases occur in central, southeastern, and mid-Atlantic areas of the United States. We report the case of a 42-year-old veteran infected with the human immunodeficiency virus who presented in E1 Paso, Texas, with a dry cough, fever, and recent weight loss. We review the clinical and epidemiologic features of blastomycosis. Diagnostic criteria and pharmacologic management are discussed. Active duty personnel are at high risk of exposure to B. dermatitidis. Military providers should maintain a

Early palliative intervention in septic patients reduces healthcare utilization.

INTRODUCTION: While the role of palliative care in the emergency department is recognized, barriers against the effective integration of palliative interventions and emergency care remain. We examined the association between goals-of-care and palliative care consultations and healthcare utilization outcomes in older adult patients who presented to the emergency department (ED) with sepsis. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 197 patients aged 65 years and older who presented to the ED with sepsis or septic shock. Healthcare utilization outcomes were compared between patients divid

Spatial heterogeneity of prion gene polymorphisms in an area recently infected by chronic wasting disease.

Genetic variability in the prion protein (Prnp) gene influences host susceptibility to many pathogenic prion diseases. Understanding the distribution of susceptible Prnp variants and determining factors influencing spatial genetic patterns are important components of many chronic wasting disease mitigation strategies. Here, we describe Prnp variability in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States of America, an area with a recent history of infection and low disease incidence. This population is characterized by lower rates of polymorphism and

Spatiotemporal patterns of Lyme disease in North Carolina: 2010-2020.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States with the majority of cases occurring in the Northeast, upper Midwest, and mid-Atlantic regions. While historically considered a low incidence state, North Carolina (NC) has reported an increasing number of cases over the past decade. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterise the spatiotemporal evolution of Lyme disease in NC from 2010 to 2020. METHODS: Confirmed and probable cases reported to the NC Division of Public Health without associated travel to high-transmission state were included in the

Monitoring performance in laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery using risk-adjusted cumulative sum at 2 high-volume centers.

BACKGROUND: Traditional surgical outcomes are measured retrospectively and intermittently, limiting opportunities for early intervention. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to use risk-adjusted cumulative sum (RA-CUSUM) to track perioperative surgical outcomes for laparoscopic gastric bypass. We hypothesized that RA-CUSUM could identify performance variations between surgeons. SETTING: Two mid-Atlantic quaternary care academic centers. METHODS: Patient-level data from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) were abstracted for lap
