The relationship between hyperosmolality and intracranial hemorrhage as well as brain dysfunction was studied. Hyperosmolality was induced by continuous infusion of hyperosmotic solutions, such as 7% sodium bicarbonate (1,666 mOsm/1), 4.64% sodium chloride (1,666 mOsm/1), 20% glucose (about 1,200 mOsm/1), 20% mannitol (about 1,200 mOsm/1), and 10% glycerol with 0.9% sodium chloride and 5% fructose (about 2,000 mOsm/1). 1) Intracranial hemorrhage was observed without exception after the rabbits had died of hyperosmolality due to the infusion of these agents. The intracranial hemorrhage was most

Effects of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta 9-THC) on the cardiovascular system, and pressor and behavioral responses to brain stimulation were investigated in rats. In urethane-anesthetized rats, intravenous administration of delta 9-THC (1, 2 and 5 mg/kg) produced a significant and transient dose-related rise but no fall in blood pressure. delta 9-THC at these doses also produced marked reduction in heart rate which was antagonized by atropine (0.5 mg/kg i.v.) or bilateral vagotomy. In freely moving rats with chronically implanted electrodes and arterial cannula implants, intraperitoneal

This study used neuroanatomical techniques to investigate sources of afferents to the Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EW) of the pigeon. The EW contains the parasympathetic preganglionic neurons that, by way of the oculomotor nerve, project to the ciliary ganglion (Narayanan and Narayanan, '76; Lyman and Mugnaini, '80). The ciliary ganglion, in turn, innervates the internal musculature of the eye; the ciliary body, the iris sphincter muscle, and the smooth muscle of choroidal blood vessels (Marwitt et al., '71; Pilar and Tuttle, '82). In the bird, the neurons in the ciliary ganglion that innervate t

The brainstem tegmentum, including the reticular formation, contains distinct nuclei, each of which has a set of chemical, physiological and anatomical features. Damage to the brainstem tegmentum is known to cause coma, the most radical disturbance of consciousness. However, it has remained unclear which nuclei within the tegmentum are crucial for the maintenance of consciousness in humans. Accordingly, we initiated a retrospective study of MRIs obtained from 47 patients with brainstem stroke. The lesion boundaries were charted on patient MRIs and transferred onto a corresponding series of 4.7

The effects of chronic administration of delta 9-THC on the cardiovascular system, and the pressor and behavioral responses to brain stimulation were investigated in freely moving rats with chronic electrode and arterial cannula implants. delta 9-THC at a dose of 6 mg/kg was injected intraperitoneally once a day for 10 days through an abdominal cannula. On the first day, delta 9-THC induced a significant decrease in heart rate and rise in blood pressure. The animals exhibited abnormal behavior such as catalepsy, walking backward and pivoting. On the 5th day, the bradycardia induced by delta 9-

The rat lateral posterior thalamic nucleus (LP) is composed of the rostromedial (LPrm), lateral (LPl), and caudomedial parts, with LPrm and LPl being areas involved in information processing within the visual cortex. Nevertheless, the specific differences in the subcortical projections to the LPrm and LPl remain elusive. In this study, we aimed to reveal the subcortical regions that project axon fibers to the LPl and LPrm using a retrograde neural tracer, Fluorogold (FG). After FG injection into the LPrm or LPl, the area was visualized immunohistochemically. Retrogradely labeled neurons from t

The nitrergic system has been inferred from cells positive to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase (NADPHd) histochemistry and/or to the neuronal isoform of nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) immunohistochemistry in different species of vertebrates. The aim of the present work was to systematically study the distribution of cell producing nitric oxide in the goldfish (Carassius auratus) brain. To reach this goal, we firstly studied co-localization for NADPHd and nNOS techniques and demonstrated an extensive double labeling. Then, we studied the distribution through the brain by the

Regional loss of immunohistochemically identified neurons in serial sections through the brainstem of 4 patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease was compared with equivalent sections from 4 age-matched control subjects. In the Parkinson brains, the catecholamine cell groups of the midbrain, pons, and medulla showed variable neuropathological changes. All dopaminergic nuclei were variably affected, but were most severely affected in the caudal, central substantia nigra. The pontine noradrenergic locus ceruleus showed variable degrees of degeneration. There was also a substantial loss of sub

Recordings were made from 132 raphe- and reticulospinal tract neurons in the medial part of the lower brain stem in 32 anesthetized monkeys. Recording sites were in the nucleus raphe magnus, the rostral nucleus raphe obscurus, and the reticular formation adjacent to the raphe. The neurons were identified by antidromic activation from the upper lumbar spinal cord. Of the population sampled, 83 cells were activated antidromically from the left dorsal lateral funiculus (DLF), 32 from the right DLF, and 17 from both sides. The mean latency for antidromic activation was 8.2 +/- 7.1 ms, correspondin

The behavioral and electroencephalographic (EEG) effects of intramuscular fluphenazine decanoate (Fl-D) were investigated in rats and compared with those of fluphenazine enanthate (Fl-E) and fluphenazine HCl (Fl-HCl). It was clearly observed that 1) these two depot type neuroleptics reduced open-field activity, 2) antagonized methamphetamine-induced hyperactivity, 3) inhibited the conditioned avoidance response, and 4) produced catalepsy, for a substantially long period of time (4-35 d). Although both Fl-D and Fl-E significantly inhibited muricide in olfactory bulbectomized rats and impaired r

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) functions as the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter within the central nervous system (CNS) of vertebrates. In this study, we examined the distribution pattern of GABA-immunoreactive (GABA-ir) cells and fibres in the CNS of the viviparous teleost Poecilia sphenops using immunofluorescence method. GABA immunoreactivity was seen in the glomerular, mitral, and granular layers of the olfactory bulbs, as well as in most parts of the dorsal and ventral telencephalon. The preoptic area consisted of a small cluster of GABA-ir cells, whereas extensively labelled GABA-ir

PURPOSE: In frontal-eyed mammals such as primates, eye movements are coordinated so that the lines of sight are directed at targets in a manner that adjusts for target distance. The lens of each eye must also be adjusted with respect to target distance to maintain precise focus. Whether the systems for controlling eye movements are monocularly or binocularly organized is currently a point of contention. We recently determined that the premotor neurons controlling the lens of one eye are bilaterally distributed in the midbrain. In this study, we examine whether this is due to premotor neurons p

Biochemical and electrophysiological studies of mammalian CNS indicate that the amino-acid, glycine, is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter whose location is, for the large part, confined to the spinal cord and brain stem. In this study, autoradiographs of C57BL/6J mouse brain sections labeled with [3H] strychnine, a potent antagonist of glycine, were used to map the distribution of glycine receptors in the CNS. Autoradiographs showed highly localized areas of grain density, which confirmed the gross distributions described in homogenate binding studies and gave a more precise regional localiz

INTRODUCTION: Surgical approaches to intrinsic pontine lesions are technically difficult and prone to complications. The surgical approach to the brainstem through midline pontine splitting is regarded as safe since there are no crossing vital fibers in the midline between the abducens nuclei at the facial colliculi in the pons and the oculomotor nucleus in the midbrain, although its actual utilization has not been reported previously.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-year-old boy presented with a large intrinsic cystic lesion in the pons. We successfully achieved gross total removal via the median sul

An autopsy case of brain candidiasis occurring in a premature infant is presented, and the morphology and intraparenchymal distribution of Candida foci are described in detail with the aid of serial sections of the affected brain. The patient was a boy, who was born after 25 weeks of gestation and died on day 15. Candida foci were composed of two infectious forms of Candida (yeasts and pseudohyphae) and various inflammatory reactions of the host. They were widely disseminated in the brain parenchyma, leptomeninges and ventricular system. In view of their morphology, they were classified into t

The role of excitatory synaptic activity at various brain regions in the development and spread of seizure activity has been investigated by the focal microinjection of 2-amino-7-phosphono-heptanoate (2-APH), a selective antagonist at the N-methyl-D-aspartate preferring receptor, or gamma-D-glutamyl-aminomethyl sulphonate (GAMS), a partially selective antagonist at the kainate receptor. In genetically epilepsy prone rats the seizure response to a loud sound in most effectively suppressed by focal injections of 2-APH, 0.1-1.0 nmol, in the inferior colliculus. Protection is also seen after injec

Effects of l-tetrahydroberberine-d-camphor sulfonate (THB-CS) on spontaneous EEG, arousal response and recruiting response were investigated in rabbits and rats in comparison with those of chlorpromazine. The spontaneous EEG recorded from the motor cortex and hippocampus showed a prominent resting pattern 3-5 min after intravenous administration of THB-CS in doses more than 0.01 mg/kg in rabbits and 30 min after oral administration of the drug in doses more than 1 mg/kg in rats. These effects lasted for 30-60 min after i.v. administration and 60-90 min after oral administration; however, the e

Evoked potentials (EP) to a conditioned stimulus (CS) were recorded from several parts of the reticular formation (RF), the midbrain central gray (CG), the occipital cortex (OC), the basolateral amygdala and the ventrobasal thalamus during appetitive and aversive classical conditionings in rats. In addition, single unit activity to rewarding CS (+) and punishing CS (-) in a single discriminative classical conditioning was recorded from RF, OC, CG and the tectum. In the EP study, peak-to-peak (p-p) amplitudes, especially of the pontine RF, increased in the initial phase of pre-conditioning, in

The neural pathways involved in reflex ovulation in the vole (Microtus agrestis) have been investigated with the [14C]2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) method. Female voles were injected i.p. with 2-DG and either not mated, sham-mated (mounted by males by vagina was taped) or mated for a period of 45 min after the injection, after which the animals were decapitated. The brain was processed for autoradiography and the relative metabolic activities (rma) of selected areas of the brain and pituitary gland were determined. The plasma separated from trunk blood was assayed for the concentration of luteinizing

The distribution of immunoreactive enkephalin in rat brain and spinal cord was studied by immunoperoxidase staining using antiserum to leucine-enkephalin ([Leu5]-enkephalin) or methionine-enkephalin ([Met5]-enkephalin). Immunoreactive staining for both enkephalins was similarly observed in nerve fibers, terminals and cell bodies in many regions of the central nervous system. Staining of perikarya was detected in hypophysectomized rats or colchicine pretreated rats. The regions of localization for enkephalin fibers and terminals include in the forebrain: lateral septum, central nucleus of the a
