Institutional barriers and professional integration of physicians with an Arab migration background in Germany: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Germany faces a persistent physicians shortage f, particularly in hospitals and rural regions. Migrant physicians, especially from Arab countries, represent a crucial component. However, their professional integration is shaped by complex licensure procedures, demanding working conditions, administrative burdens and sociocultural dynamics. While previous research has examined structural and regulatory barriers, limited empirical evidence exists on integration processes from the perspective of Arab physicians themselves. PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the challenges and exper

Parkinson's disease genetics across diverse ancestries: an observational genetic study of causal and risk variants with translational implications.

BACKGROUND: The genetic architecture of Parkinson's disease varies considerably across ancestries, yet most previous genetic studies have focused on individuals of European ancestry. We aimed to characterise the distribution of established Parkinson's disease causal variants, as well as risk-associated variants with clinical implications (ie, variants in genes involved in pathways targeted by ongoing clinical trials), across ancestrally diverse populations. METHODS: We conducted a multi-ancestry, observational, cross-sectional genetic study using retrospective data from the Global Parkinson's

Post-displacement mental health among Syrian refugees: A systematic review and meta-analysis comparing Middle Eastern and European host contexts across time.

This systematic review and meta-analysis examines PTSD, depression, and anxiety among adult Syrian refugees living in neighboring Middle Eastern countries and European contexts, comparing prevalence across regions and different phases of displacement. Evidence was synthesized from 23 quantitative studies conducted between 2014 and 2025. A random-effects meta-analysis using generalized linear mixed-effects models (GLMM) yielded a pooled PTSD prevalence of 32.4% based on 19 studies. Temporal subgroup analyses showed no significant difference between early (2014-2017: 32.2%) and later periods (20

Health Information Technology Use among Foreign-Born Adults of Middle Eastern and North African Descent in the United States.

Health information technology (HIT) use among foreign-born adults of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) descent is understudied. MENA Americans are currently categorized as "White" in the United States (US) on federal forms. Our purpose was to uncover the prevalence of HIT use among MENA immigrants compared to US- and foreign-born White adults before and after adjusting for covariates. The 2011-2018 National Health Interview Survey data (n = 161,613; ages 18 + years) were analyzed. HIT uses evaluated were searching for health information, filling prescriptions, scheduling appointments, an

Predictors of the unfavorable outcomes in acute ischemic stroke patients treated with alteplase, a multi-center randomized trial.

Worldwide, stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability in adults. Alteplase is the only approved treatment for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and results in an improvement in a third of treated patients. We evaluated the post-stroke unfavourable outcome predictors in alteplase-treated patients from Egypt and Saudi Arabia. We assessed the effect of different risk factors on AIS outcomes after alteplase in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Our study included 592 AIS alteplase-treated patients. The relationship between risk factors, clinical presentation, and imaging features was evaluated to predict fa

Suspected Undiagnosed ADRD Among Middle Eastern and North African Americans.

ADRD underdiagnosis among minority populations is well-established and known to be more prevalent among women. Yet, it remains unclear if these patterns exist among adults of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) descent. We estimated ADRD underdiagnosis among adults of MENA descent and other US- and foreign-born non-Hispanic Whites and compared sex-stratified results. We linked 2000-2017 National Health Interview Survey and 2001-2018 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data (ages > = 65 years, n = 23,981). Undiagnosed ADRD was suspected if participants reported cognitive limitations without co

Free-Roaming Cat (Felis Catus) Management and Welfare Policies in Two University Campuses in Beirut, Lebanon: Strengths, Weaknesses, and Opportunities.

Little information has been reported about the welfare and management of free-roaming animals in Middle Eastern countries. Here we describe a case study of free-roaming cat (Felis catus) management policies in two universities in Beirut, Lebanon whereby cats are immensely valued for their presence and the benefits they bring to students and employees. Guided by concern for animal welfare, the innovative, humane approaches by the universities include arranging adoptions, discouraging pet abandonment, food provision, health monitoring, nurturing a social responsibility consciousness among young

Moyamoya disease in patients of Finno-Ugric origin.

The terms moyamoya disease, moyamoya syndrome and moyamoya phenomenon can be found dispersed throughout the literature. The diagnostic criteria for moyamoya disease are: (1) stenosis or occlusion of the anterior cerebral, middle cerebral and internal carotid arteries, (2) an abnormal vascular network near these arteries and (3) bilateral findings. When only the two first conditions are present, the term moyamoya syndrome is used. The incidence of moyamoya disease is high in the Mongol race, although the moyamoya syndrome is more frequently reported among Caucasians. In the last two decades 41

A novel polymorphism associated with lactose tolerance in Africa: multiple causes for lactase persistence?

Persistence or non-persistence of lactase expression into adult life is a polymorphic trait that has been attributed to a single nucleotide polymorphism (C-13910T) in an enhancer element 13.9 kb upstream of the lactase gene (LCT). The -13910*T allele occurs at very high frequency in northern Europeans as part of a very long haplotype (known as A), and promotes binding of the transcription factor Oct-1. However, -13910*T is at very low frequency in many African milk drinking pastoralist groups where lactase persistence phenotype has been reported at high frequency. We report here for the first
