Active duty service members and their families have unique behavioral health care service needs. The purpose of this study is to determine geographical access to specialized behavioral health programs tailored to active duty U.S. service members and military families from military installations. This study generated network distance measures between active duty military installations and licensed substance use disorder (SUD) treatment facilities and mental health treatment facilities for 2015-2018 using data from national surveys administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services A

This study examined the role of cumulative combat experiences with regard to military performance and conduct and mental health among a sample of young soldiers from the Army STARRS dataset (N = 5,283). Higher levels of cumulative combat experiences were directly related to poorer performance and conduct and a greater likelihood of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Military performance and conduct served as a linking mechanism between combat experiences and mental health. Using moderated mediation structural equation modeling, relationship disruptions were found t

Global health engagement (GHE) has emerged as a central instrument of foreign and defense policy across multiple nations, reflecting the growing convergence of health and national security. This manuscript examines the ethical and strategic roles of military health diplomacy and health security in GHE activities primarily oriented toward advancing national security objectives. It argues that military GHE is ethically justified only when it promotes health security alongside, rather than subordinate to, national security interests. Drawing on contemporary examples, including U.S. military medic

Introduction: This scoping review evaluated the efficacy/effectiveness and utilization of complementary and integrative health (CIH) therapies for pain management within the Military Health System (MHS). Specifically, it aimed to assess evidence-based modalities such as acupuncture, biofeedback, hypnosis, massage therapy, meditation, guided imagery, Tai Chi/Qi Gong, and yoga, which are part of the Veterans Administration's (VA) Whole Health program. The goal was to determine their effectiveness in military service members and understand their utilization in the MHS, as well as explore CIH rese

INTRODUCTION: Persistent inequities exist in obstetric and neonatal outcomes in military families despite universal health care coverage. Though the exact underlying cause has not been identified, social determinants of health may uniquely impact military families. The purpose of this study was to qualitatively investigate the potential impact of social determinants of health and the lived experiences of military individuals seeking maternity care in the Military Health System.

INTRODUCTION: Behavioral health conditions are a significant concern for the U.S. military and the Military Health System (MHS) because of decreased military readiness and increased health care utilization. Although MHS beneficiaries receive direct care in military treatment facilities, a disproportionate majority of behavioral health treatment is purchased care received in civilian facilities. Yet, limited evidence exists about purchased behavioral health care received by MHS beneficiaries. This longitudinal study (1) estimated the prevalence of purchased behavioral health care and (2) identi

Military aviation exposes aircrew to interacting physiological and operational stressors that are often studied in isolation. These stressors are experienced by the whole body: pulmonary, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, endocrine, and immune responses may influence cerebral perfusion, blood-brain barrier function, fatigue, and recovery. Evidence from aviation cohorts, altitude-chamber studies, and adjacent fields suggests that some exposures may converge on neurovascular, blood-brain barrier, perivascular, and inflammatory pathways before overt neurological disease is apparent. This narrative

INTRODUCTION: The storage of reusable medical devices (RMDs) is the final reprocessing phase and the step that directly precedes point-of-care delivery. Reusable medical devices, including surgical tools necessitating sterilization and semicritical devices such as endoscopes, undergo high-level disinfection. The rigorous reprocessing protocols and subsequent storage of RMDs are crucial in preserving their sterility and asepsis. This ensures they are available, clean, and safe for patient use, thereby significantly reducing the risk of surgical site infection. The stringent requirements for RMD

Suicidality disproportionately affects Veterans, and in 2020 the Military Health and Well-Being Project was conducted in part to study the link between risk and protective constructs with suicidality among Veterans. In the present study, we investigate the relative contribution of risk (i.e., military self-stigma, daily stress, combat exposure, substance use, traumatic brain injury, and moral injury) and protective constructs (i.e., social integration, social contribution, public service motivation, purpose and meaning, and help-seeking) with suicidality. Using cross-sectional Pearson correlat

INTRODUCTION: Cancers of unknown primary (CUP) are defined as histologically confirmed metastatic cancers that do not have an identified primary site of origin despite an appropriate diagnostic workup. Although accessibility to and quality of medical care influence diagnosis of cancer including CUP, previous studies describing CUP have generally been conducted in patients with various accessibilities to care. This study aimed to describe the demographic, histologic, and temporal trend characteristics of CUP patients in the DoD Cancer Registry of the Military Health System (MHS), which provides
