Prevalence and Systemic Factors Associated with Periodontitis among Kidney Transplant Recipients: A Cross-sectional Study in Vietnam.

OBJECTIVE: Kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) are particularly vulnerable to periodontal disease due to long-term immunosuppression, metabolic disturbances, and chronic inflammation. However, data in Southeast Asia remain scarce. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence, stage distribution of periodontitis, and to examine systemic and behavioral factors associated with the disease among Vietnamese KTRs; as a secondary exploratory aim, we evaluated selected systemic biomarkers (C-reactive protein [CRP], serum urea, and platelet count [PLT]) and descriptively summarized their cross-

A large outbreak of streptococcal pyoderma in a military training establishment.

An outbreak of streptococcal pyoderma in a military institution into which fresh susceptible recruits were regularly introduced involved more than 1300 persons over an eighteen-month period. Two M types were responsible for the great majority of the cases and an attack by one conferred immunity to that strain but not to the other. Lesions varied from trivial to disabling. Epidemiological studies indicated that contact -- direct or indirect -- through such things as gymnasium equipment and room dust was the means of transmission. The outbreak was eventually controlled by vigorous case finding,

Immunization to protect the US Armed Forces: heritage, current practice, and prospects.

Americans serving with the US Armed Forces need protection from the dangerous infections that they can contract during training, based on occupation, during overseas deployment, or because of underlying health status. For over 230 years, the military health-care system has immunized troops to protect them personally and to help them accomplish their missions. Military researchers have invented, developed, and improved vaccines and immunization delivery methods against more than 20 diseases. This article consolidates content from several previous historical reviews, adds additional sources, and

Infection prevention and control in deployed military medical treatment facilities.

Infections have complicated the care of combat casualties throughout history and were at one time considered part of the natural history of combat trauma. Personnel who survived to reach medical care were expected to develop and possibly succumb to infections during their care in military hospitals. Initial care of war wounds continues to focus on rapid surgical care with debridement and irrigation, aimed at preventing local infection and sepsis with bacteria from the environment (e.g., clostridial gangrene) or the casualty's own flora. Over the past 150 years, with the revelation that pathoge

[Laveran and the French Academy of Medicine].

In November 1880, Alphonse Laveran, stationed at the Constantine military hospital, addressed to the Academy of Medicine a "Note on a new parasite found in the blood of several patients with malaria fever". Léon Colin, professor at the Val-de-Grâce school, is the rapporteur, but he is not convinced by these observations, nor by two additional notes sent by Laveran in December 1880 and October 1881. This skepticism is shared by other academicians such as Joseph Laboulbène and Émile Duclaux.Twelve years will be necessary for Laveran to overcome the disbelief of the French scientific community. T

The Study on the Lives and Health Conditions of Internees in Santo Thomas Camp of Philippines - Based on McAnlis's The War in Manila (1941-1945).

When Japan invaded the Philippines, two missionary dentists (Dr. McAnlis and Dr. Boots) who were forced to leave Korea were captured and interned in the Santo Thomas camp in Manila. Japan continued to bombard and plunder the Philippines in the wake of the Pacific War following the Great East Asia policy, leading to serious inflation and material deficiency. More than 4,000 Allied citizens held in Santo Thomas camp without basic food and shelter. Santo Thomas Camp was equipped with the systems of the Japanese military medical officers and Western doctors of captivity based on the Geneva Convent

[The Austrian Red Cross and Austrian bacteriologists in the Balkan wars 1912/13 - Centenary of the first application of the bacteriology in theatres of war].

When Austria joined the Geneva Convention the "Patriotischer Hilfsverein" (Patriotic Aid Society) which was founded for the concerns of wounded soldiers, was named "Austrian Society of the Red Cross". It had to stand its first big test in 1912 in the first Balkan war; military surgeons and bacteriologists were deployed to all warring states. The cholera dominated under the infectious diseases among the various forces and the civilian populations. Upon request of the Bulgarian king renowned bacteriologists of the University of Vienna were dispatched. Their work presented the first action of bac

[Carl Ludwig Sigmund Ritter von Ilanor, the founder of venerology, an early Hospital Hygienist and Austrian Epidemiologist in the Service of the European Public Health. The 200th anniversary of his birth in August 1810].

Carl Ludwig Sigmund von Ilanor, primarily being surgeon, became the first professor of Syphilidology in Vienna, in which position he was confronted with the disastrous hygienic conditions in Vienna's general hospital. His improvement of the situation, still in the pre-bacteriological epoch, made him a successful clinician and hospital hygienist as well as a charitable social reformer. In Europe far beyond the Austrian state Sigmund was recognized for his reforms of the defense of epidemics, especially of the plague and of epizootics originating in the Osman territories of south-east Europe and

Mediation and Moderation of the Relationship Between Combat Experiences and Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms in Active Duty Military Personnel.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a major health concern among the U.S. military population, affecting up to 12% to 24% of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Sleep disturbances, neuroticism, and childhood trauma have all been associated with the development of PTSD in military populations, especially in relation to combat experiences. The effects of disrupted sleep and post-traumatic stress can affect the physical well-being of soldier and sailors in the field and impact them for years after deployment. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between self-re

The impact of hygienic living conditions on the differentiation of male body height at the beginning of the twentieth century in the USSR.

BACKGROUND: The positive changes in hygienic living conditions are commonly believed to explain secular changes in body height and the age of maturity. However, it is difficult to estimate the separate impacts of these factors due to the lack of social and economic data and variations in the sources of information. We hypothesized that final male body height could be associated with various socioeconomic indicators, such as the development of the medical care system, the quality of nutrition, and the level of sanitary and hygienic conditions. Moreover, we hypothesized that male body height cou

Long-term scopolamine treatment and dental caries.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether scopolamine, an anticholinergic agent which induces hyposalivation, represents a risk factor for the occurrence of dental caries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was carried out among sailors treated with scopolamine for seasickness. The study population included 370 young healthy male adults (18-30 years old) who served in the Israel Navy between 2012 and 2016. Of these, 66 subjects who were chronically treated with intermittent administration of scopolamine, either by the oral or transdermal route, were assigned to the study group. Docu

Cigarette smoking, oral hygiene and periodontal health in Swedish army conscripts.

Possible dissimilarities between smokers and nonsmokers regarding oral hygiene, gingivitis, periodontal pocketing and alveolar bone loss were studied in a sample of 134 army conscripts. Compared to nonsmokers, smokers had a higher plaque index and greater severity of gingivitis, while no differences were found concerning pocket depth and bone loss. It could be demonstrated that the difference regarding gingivitis disappeared when a check was made for plaque values. It still remains to be explained why plaque deposition is more pronounced in smokers.

[Hemorrhagic fever with the renal syndrome: modern aspects of epidemiology and prophylaxis].

Hemorrhagic fever with the renal syndrome (HFRS) is a typical natural-and-focal virus infection having military-and-epidemiological importance for Armed Forces of most countries. Severe forms of this infection are typical for the Far East of Russia, countries of South-East Asia and especially for the American continent. The lethality from HFRS amounts to 15-50%. The main natural carriers and keepers of HFRS stimulus are various mouse-type rodents. In Russia besides well-studied natural focuses on the Far East, Siberia, Ural, Povolge other active HFRS focuses were determined not long ago (Mosco

[Improvement of hygiene and the combat of epidemics as Russian state concerns during World War I: Prince Alexander von Oldenburg and the POWs of the Central Powers in Russia].

When Russia joined the war against the Central Powers in 1914, she immediately faced problems of public health care among the masses of people who were forced to move across far distances in the country: soldiers, refugees, and prisoners of war. Because of poor organisation and the unexpectedly long duration of the war, the POWs fared worst of all war victims in Russia. Subjected to an overstrained military organisation in the rear, the fate of this broadly neglected group illustrates how and with what success Russia strove to meet its deficiencies in administrative structure during wartime. Pseudofolliculitis barbae. No 'pseudoproblem'.

Pseudofolliculitis barbae possibly affects 45% of all black servicemen and is a source of much misunderstanding and social unrest in the military. A recent study of 96 cases of pseudofolliculitis barbae has elucidated a successful shaving technique. It employs a 30-day period of beard regrowth to eliminate ingrown hairs, twice-daily use of a new polyester skin-cleansing pad, and use of solely electric hair clippers for facial hair removal. Ninety-six percent of those using this technique could thereafter conform to the Air Force grooming code.

A lifetime of campaigning: Ettie Rout, emancipationist beyond the pale.

H.G. Wells called her 'that unforgettable heroine'. But she was forgotten, most particularly in New Zealand, where she was banned from mention in the newspapers under the War Regulations for her 'safe sex' work during the First World War - a very hypocritical move as it happened just as her work was officially taken on by the army. For this work she was dubbed the 'guardian angel of the ANZACs' by a French venereal disease specialist and awarded the Reconnaissance Franaise by the French. After the war she settled in London, marrying her long-time friend and wartime colleague, physical culturis

Oral health-related risk behaviours and attitudes among Croatian adolescents--multiple logistic regression analysis.

The aim of this study was to explore the patterns of oral health-related risk behaviours in relation to dental status, attitudes, motivation and knowledge among Croatian adolescents. The assessment was conducted in the sample of 750 male subjects - military recruits aged 18-28 in Croatia using the questionnaire and clinical examination. Mean number of decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) and Significant Caries Index (SIC) were calculated. Multiple logistic regression models were crated for analysis. Although models of risk behaviours were statistically significant their explanatory values

Outbreak of acute norovirus gastroenteritis in a military facility in Singapore: a public health perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Norovirus gastrointestinal disease (GID) outbreaks occur frequently in closed settings, with high attack rates. On October 16, 2008, a norovirus GID outbreak occurred at a Singapore military camp. This study describes the epidemiological investigations conducted to determine the cause of outbreak and the efficacy of the public health measures implemented. METHODS: Epidemiologic investigations included a case-control study of exposure to different food items and an environmental exposure survey. Stool samplings of patients and food handlers for common pathogens, and microbiologic

A prospective epidemiologic study of shigellosis in the Israel Defense Forces: implications for the use of shigella vaccines.

Recent development of new shigella vaccines has renewed interest in the current epidemiology of shigellosis in endemic regions. A prospective epidemiologic study of 5,774 soldiers was carried out in the Israel Defense Forces, between the months of May and September 1984. Shigellosis was found to be responsible for half the diarrhea epidemics and only rarely presented as sporadic cases of diarrhea. The epidemics occurred after exposure to field conditions, whereas under fixed military base conditions the finding of a case of shigellosis generally was not associated with an epidemic spread of th
