Dermatology and skin disease in the American Civil War.

The Civil War happened at the end of the medical dark ages or, conversely, at the beginning of the modern medical era. The story of how physicians and nurses of the time approached a number of cutaneous diseases of importance in the military context is related. Entities discussed include the army itch/camp itch phenomenon, sexually transmitted diseases, scurvy and nutritional disorders, smallpox and spurious vaccination, and hospital gangrene.

[A paramedical team "on the front line" of hospital care for legionnaires].

The psychiatric department at the Laveran Army Training Hospital in Marseille is a referral center for legionnaires, a population at high risk of psychological trauma. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, nurses and orderlies play a major role in their care. The dual status of caregiver and soldier is an asset in providing comprehensive care for psychologically injured legionnaires. The service's civilian staff also have extensive knowledge of the military environment.

Nurse-to-nurse hostility, confrontational anxiety, and emotional intelligence: an integral, descriptive pilot study.

Nurse-to-nurse hostility (NNH) is an emotional challenge within a group and has a negative impact on performance, nurse satisfaction/retention, health, and patient safety. The purpose of this study was to explore confrontational anxiety scores (CAS) of acute care nurses, including perianesthesia nurses, resulting from NNH by asking: In combined groups, will high levels of individual emotional intelligence (EI) and group emotional competence (GEC) be associated with low CAS and will there be a difference in CAS between military and civilian nurses? Data were gathered from two valid and reliable

Differentiating social environments of high-risk professionals and specialised nurses: a qualitative empirical study on social embeddedness.

Objective: High-risk professionals and specialised nurses in hospitals are frequently exposed to potentially traumatic events. Psychotrauma researchers have extensively studied personal risk factors of traumatisation among high-risk professionals, but it is hard to understand psychological functioning when professionals are decontextualised from their social environment. Generally, it has been well documented that to reduce the risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other mental health problems related to traumatisation, it is essential to be embedded in a supportive social environmen

A case of a chlorine inhalation injury in an Ebola treatment unit.

We present a 26-year-old male British military nurse, deployed to Sierra Leone to treat patients with Ebola virus disease at the military-run Kerry Town Ebola Treatment Unit. Following exposure to chlorine gas during routine maintenance procedures, the patient had an episode of respiratory distress and briefly lost consciousness after exiting the facility. Diagnoses of reactive airways disease, secondary to the chlorine exposure and a hypocapnic syncopal episode were made. The patient was resuscitated with minimal intervention and complete recovery occurred in less than 1 week. This case highl

US military primary care: problems, solutions, and implications for civilian medicine.

The US Military Health System (MHS), which is responsible for providing care to active and retired members of the military and their dependents, faces challenges in delivering cost-effective, high-quality primary care while maintaining a provider workforce capable of meeting both peacetime and wartime needs. The MHS has implemented workforce management strategies to address these challenges, including "medical home" teams for primary care and other strategies that expand the roles of nonphysician providers such as physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and medical technicians. Because thes

When the Nurse Becomes the Daughter: Lessons From My Father's Final Days.

Military service demands sacrifice, but no professional challenge prepared me for the deeply personal experience of caring for my father at the end of his life. As an Air Force nurse, I have tended to patients in complex clinical settings, yet becoming both nurse and daughter to my terminally ill father revealed a deeper dimension of caregiving. My father suffered from multiple chronic conditions and declined rapidly after a below-the-knee amputation in 2024. When I returned home on leave, it was clear he was dying. I admitted him to hospice and remained by his side for 40 days, providing tota

Nursing typhus victims in the Second World War, 1942-1944: a discussion paper.

AIMS: This article explores the care British nurses provided to victims of typhus during the Second World War. BACKGROUND: Typhus is associated with poverty and overcrowding. During wars in the pre-antibiotic era, civilians were particularly susceptible to epidemics, which military governments feared would spread to their troops. DESIGN: This discussion paper draws on archival data from three typhus epidemics in the Second World War to examine the expert work of British nurses in caring for victims during these potential public health disasters. DATA SOURCES: The published sources for the p

Sir Hugh Cairns and World War II British advances in head injury management, diffuse brain injury, and concussion: an Oxford tale.

The authors trace the Oxford, England, roots of World War II (WWII)-related advances in head injury management, the biomechanics of concussion and brain injury, and postwar delineation of pathological findings in severe concussion and diffuse brain injury in man. The prominent figure in these developments was the charismatic and innovative Harvey Cushing-trained neurosurgeon Sir Hugh Cairns. Cairns, who was to closely emulate Cushing's surgical and scholarly approach, is credited with saving thousands of lives during WWII by introducing and implementing innovative programs such as helmets for

Evidence-Based Pearls: Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, predominantly impacting men. The highest risk for the development of a TBI includes athletes, construction workers, military personnel, and law enforcement. TBI is classified as mild, moderate, or severe. The degree of TBI will determine the severity of clinical manifestations. Management of TBI may be a combination of operative and non-operative interventions. Nursing considerations and management include frequent assessment of vital signs and neurologic status, maintaining hemodynamic stability, ear

Military Acute Concussion Evaluation: A Report on Clinical Usability, Utility, and User's Perceived Confidence.

The signs and symptoms of concussion may not always be clear. Therefore, the Military Acute Concussion Evaluation (MACE) tool was created to help deployed medics and corpsmen identify concussions, particularly in deployed settings. Since 2008, the MACE has been updated multiple times, but each new version of the tool is more complex and takes longer to complete. The objective of this study was to assess the usability, utility, and perceived confidence among military healthcare providers for the latest version, MACE 2. Therefore, a semi-structured interview, including Likert-scale and open-ende

Knowledge, mechanisms, and intervention of the polytrauma clinical triad in military pain medicine.

This up-to-date review focused on the recent advances in the concept, interrelationship, and mechanisms of the polytrauma clinical triad (PCT), and intervention knowledge and approaches to its prevention and treatment from the perspective of military pain medicine, hoping to provide a scientific basis and reference of PCT. Many soldiers suffering from chronic pain coexist with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. If the above three diseases exist, it is called PCT. Three diseases in this common triad are interrelated and reinforce each other. This triad is challenging to
