Journal of pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition2006eng
This comment by the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) Committee on Nutrition summarizes available information on the composition and use of soy protein formulae as substitutes for breastfeeding and cows' milk protein formulae as well as on their suitability and safety for supporting adequate growth and development in infants. Soy is a source of protein that is inferior to cows' milk, with a lower digestibility and bioavailability as well as a lower methionine content. For soy protein infant formulae, only protein isolates can be used, and minim

Concern has been widespread about possible high levels of environmental contamination in areas of the former Soviet Union. Some of this concern has focussed on toxicants in human milk and their potential adverse effects on the breastfeeding child, but published data have been virtually unavailable. This study collected previously unpublished analyses of breast milk, water, cow's milk, and dairy product samples from several of the Republics during the last decade, providing an opportunity for comparing the level of contamination to similar data from other countries. The general levels of contam

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a food antigen-mediated disorder of the esophagus characterized by eosinophil predominant inflammation and symptoms of esophageal dysfunction. Dietary antigen elimination induces clinical and histological remission in patients with EoE. The most restrictive of elimination diets (the elemental diet) removes all possible food antigens while empiric elimination diets remove all (or a subset) of food antigens most commonly reported to cause esophageal eosinophilia and food allergies (milk, egg, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, or legumes). Elimination diets a

This study evaluated heavy metals and minerals concentrations in dairy and plant-based milk alternatives available in Pakistan using ICP-MS. A total of 324 raw milk samples (cow, buffalo, goat, sheep, camel), 48 heat-treated samples (UHT, pasteurized, powdered), and 21 plant-based milk (coconut, almond, soy, oat, rice, walnut, cashew) were analyzed. Results showed significant differences in heavy metal levels across milk types. Chromium was the most common heavy metal in raw milk, especially in buffalo milk (0.16 mg L-1). Heat-treated milk had lower heavy metal concentrations than raw milk, wi

BACKGROUND: Iodine is a micronutrient essential for the synthesis of thyroid hormones and crucial throughout life. Milk is potentially one of the major contributors to iodine intake in many countries, including Portugal, due to its consumption patterns.
OBJECTIVES: This study characterizes iodine content seasonality in milk and plant-based milk alternatives commercially available in Portugal.
RESULTS: Milk products representing summer and winter seasonal pastures and plant-based alternatives were obtained from major Portuguese supermarkets. Iodine was quantified by the Sandell-Kolthoff react

Alkaline treatment of gramineous crop residues can convert an abundant, minimally utilized, poorly digestible straw into a moderately digestible feedstuff. Given the volatile nature of grain prices, substitution of treated stover for grain was investigated with dairy cows to provide insights on ruminal and digestibility effects of a feed option that makes use of alternative, available resources. The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in diet digestibility and ruminal effects when increasing levels of calcium oxide-treated corn stover (CaOSt) were substituted for corn grain in diet

Most milk replacers (MR) contain more lactose compared with whole milk, which, when fed at a large meal size, could influence gut barrier function in calves. This study evaluated how replacing lactose in MR with fat (on a wt/wt basis) affects intestinal histomorphology and permeability in neonatal dairy calves. Thirty-four Holstein-Friesian bull calves were blocked by dam parity and randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments (n = 17): a high-lactose (46.1% lactose, 18.0% crude fat, and 23.9% crude protein of dry matter) or a high-fat MR (HF; 39.9% lactose, 24.6% crude fat, and 24.0% crude protein

Goat milk is considered as one of the most suitable substitute for human milk, especially for children, the aged and those with cow milk allergies. Consumption of raw or unpasteurized goat milk has been known to be a potential route of Toxoplasma gondii infection for human beings. However, no studies have been carried out to detect T. gondii in goat milk in China. Thus, this stuy was firstly carried out to detect T. gondii IgG antibody in domestic goat's serum and milk during lactation by a commercial validated ELISA kit in China. In total, 10.49% (66/629) serum samples and 9.70% (61/629) milk

This guideline advises on the management of patients with cow's milk allergy. Cow's milk allergy presents in the first year of life with estimated population prevalence between 2% and 3%. The clinical manifestations of cow's milk allergy are very variable in type and severity making it the most difficult food allergy to diagnose. A careful age- and disease-specific history with relevant allergy tests including detection of milk-specific IgE (by skin prick test or serum assay), diagnostic elimination diet, and oral challenge will aid in diagnosis in most cases. Treatment is advice on cow's milk

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin E-mediated allergy to cow's milk protein represents a major problem for infants who are not breast fed. A search for substitute milks revealed a cross-allergenicity to milk derived from goat and sheep but not to milk from a mare. We noted that the cow, goat and sheep species are both artiodactyls and ruminants, defining them as kosher animals, in contrast to the mare.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether patients with IgE-mediated cow's milk allergy are cross-sensitized to milk from other species such as the deer, ibex, buffalo, pig and camel.
METHODS: Patients with a

There is a growing body of research on the infection of cow milk by Prototheca algae, a potential human pathogen. This study presents investigations on plasma treatment to inactivate Prototheca directly in milk. However, microbiological tests revealed a surprisingly high survival rate of Prototheca in milk compared to saline solution treated under the same conditions. This phenomenon appears to be due to presence of proteins that act as scavengers of plasma reactive species, with OH• radicals playing a major role. Studies using MALDI-TOF MS, FTIR, XPS and UV-VIS on a model solution of peptone

Antipathogenic properties of camel milk have been investigated to substitute for drugs hence overcome drug resistance. The main objective of this present study was to investigate the anthelmintic activity of camel milk in relationship to its chemical composition. In vitro anthelmintic effects of camel milk against Haemonchus contortus from sheep were ascertained by egg hatching and worm motility inhibitions in comparison to milks from cow, ewe and goat as well as a reference drug albendazole. Chemical composition revealed that camel milk has higher contents of protective protein (lactoferrin)

BACKGROUND: Donor milk is the preferred substitute to mother's own milk, which can protect high-risk infants from many complications. Several milk banks have been established in China. However, the small number of donors and insufficient milk donated have become the primary obstacles for these milk banks.
RESEARCH AIMS: To explore the level of, and the factors influencing, knowledge and attitude about donor milk among currently lactating women across mainland China and to provide a reference for the development of Chinese milk banks.
METHODS: A brief, self-reporting, prospective, cross-secti

Fresh yogurt has been proposed as a milk substitute for lactase-deficient patients. We investigated the possibility that a dried, low-fat milk fermented by yogurt microorganisms would be effective. Processing of a fermented milk by spray-drying led to a powder with persistence of lactase activity (11.7 units/g) without storage at 4 degrees C and stable at room temperature (20-23 degrees C). The tolerance and absorption of 10.5 g of lactose in a volume of 150 ml was studied in 25 Gabonese lactase-deficient children aged 5-14 years in the form of a standard humanized milk formula followed 1 week

Due to the prevalence and severity of cow milk (CM) allergy (CMA), an ideal substitute is urgently needed to develop hypoallergenic infant formula for infants who experience anaphylaxis to typical whey-based CM formula. Goat milk (GM) and horse milk (HM) are considered appropriate substitutes; however, whether GM and HM are less allergenic than CM is unclear. In the present study, the difference in allergenicity among CM, GM, and HM was investigated using the Balb/c mouse model. The number of mice with severe respiratory symptoms was significantly lower in the GM- and HM-sensitised groups than

INTRODUCTION: Megaloblastic anemia in young children is a significant but preventable condition, commonly caused by deficiencies in folate or vitamin B12. Prolonged predominant feeding with nutritionally inadequate milk substitutes, such as unfortified goat milk, increases the risk of severe nutritional anemia, particularly in low-resource settings.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 2-year-old Somali boy who presented with a 5-month history of fatigue, recurrent fever, poor appetite, abdominal distension, progressive weight loss, and cough. The child had a history of prolonged predominant goat m

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the potential capacity of infant formulae based, respectively, on hydrolyzed casein and on hydrolyzed whey proteins to induce sensitization in guinea pigs. This potential capacity was tested by intravenous challenges with centrifuged formulae and by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis. The results showed that neither formula was sensitizing, therefore suggesting that protein hydrolyzates can be considered a suitable cow's milk substitute for infants with cow's milk protein intolerance. However, further studies are necessary in order to investigate whe

Rats were fed diets resembling a normal human diet, except that, in a complete factorial fashion, safflower oil and/or mineral oil were substituted for part of the fat, while fructose, lactose and/or cellulose were substituted for carbohydrate, and zein was substituted for milk protein. Food intake and weight gain were not influenced by cellulose and mineral oil, but zein decreased both substantially. Plasma cholesterol was unchanged by safflower oil or mineral oil but was decreased by fructose. Plasma glucose was reduced as the starch-to-sugar ratio increased. The rate of aniline metabolism w

Substitute feedings have been used to treat infants with cow milk protein allergy for most of this century. For the past 50 years, several infant formulas based on animal proteins, both intact and chemically modified, or on vegetable protein have been labeled "hypoallergenic." Because of the risk of anaphylaxis and other serious adverse reactions, formulas that are claimed to be hypoallergenic should be subjected to rigorous preclinical and clinical testing. At a minimum, such formulas should not provoke any allergic signs or symptoms in 90% of infants with documented cow milk protein allergy
