Multiple disadvantages: class, social capital, and well-being of ethnic minority groups in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused untold damage to the socio-economic lives of people all over the world. Research has also demonstrated great inequality in the pandemic experience. In the UK as in many other countries, people from ethnic minority backgrounds and in working-class positions have suffered disproportionately more than the majority group and those in salariat positions in terms of income loss, financial difficulty, and vulnerability to infection. Yet little is known about how people coped in the daily lives and tried to maintain their well-being during the most diffic

Problem Gambling Risk Among Older Francophones in Ontario Canada: Surprising Results that Contradict Previous Findings of Gambling in Minority Groups.

Gambling is a popular activity among older adults. Despite this increase in popularity little research has examined gambling among this group. This is especially true for minority older adults, like Francophones in Ontario. The purpose of this study was to better understand gambling in a sample of older Francophones from North-Eastern Ontario, the first study to do so. A sample of 181 older (over 55 years) Francophones from Northeastern Ontario (M age = 68.7, SD 7.6) was recruited. This sample was compared to a sample of older adults with English as their native language that had been previous

Distributional Environmental Injustices for a Minority Group without Minority Status: Arab Americans and Residential Exposure to Carcinogenic Air Pollution in the US.

Distributional environmental injustices in residential exposure to air pollution in Arab American enclaves have not been examined. We conducted our investigation at the census tract-level across the continental United States using a set of socio-demographic variables to predict cancer risk from hazardous air pollutant (HAP) exposure. Arab enclaves had a mean cancer risk score of 44.08, as compared to 40.02 in non-enclave tracts. In terms of the specific origin groups, Moroccan enclaves had the highest cancer risk score (46.93), followed by Egyptian (45.33), Iraqi (43.13), Jordanian (41.67), an

Improving racial data equity among minority groups in South Carolina using COVID-19 as an example: application of principal components analysis.

BACKGROUND: Data inequity occurs when racial and ethnic groups are aggregated during data collection or reporting despite their differences. To demonstrate racial data equity importance, we re-analyzed South Carolina's (SC) census data and COVID-19 case-rate and death-rate distributions according to age, sex, and new combined single and multiracial categories. METHODS: The new combined single and multiracial categories included individuals who identified as a single race alone (such as American Indian or Alaska Native, AI-AN) with those who identified as more than one race (such as AI-AN and

A Situation-Specific Theory on Kidney Health Inequities Among Midlife Women From Ethnic Minority Groups in the US (KH-MWMG Theory).

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) inequities among midlife women in the U.S. arise from intersecting determinants across individual, interpersonal, community, and societal levels. This paper introduces the Kidney Health Inequities among Midlife Women Minority Group (KH-MWMG) Theory, a situation-specific theory (SST) developed using an integrative approach. The KH-MWMG theory illustrates how socio-ecological factors interact to influence CKD risks and outcomes over the life course. The KH-MWMG theory provides a structured framework to address CKD inequities. The SST needs to be further developed thr

The potential role of antibodies against minor blood group antigens in renal transplantation.

Blood group antigens are red blood cell (RBC) surface markers comprising specific carbohydrate moieties attached to the glycolipids and glycoproteins within the membrane. In addition to the major ABO blood group antigens, at least 35 minor blood group antigens have been defined to date. These antigens have immunogenic potential and may cause a transfusion reaction. There is evidence for renal expression of antigens from the Kidd, MNS, Duffy and Lewis groups and therefore the potential for antibodies directed against these antigens to cross-react in a transplanted kidney. In individuals lacking

Sexual behavior and vaginal colonization by group B streptococcus among minority women.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that sexual behaviors predict colonization of the vagina by group B streptococcus among minority women. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, descriptive study of 192 consecutive African-American (37%) and Hispanic women (63%). Each woman underwent a detailed interview concerning sexual behavior. Separate specimens were taken from the endocervix, upper vagina, lower vagina, and anorectum and placed in selective broth media for isolation of group B streptococcus. Significant behavioral predictors of vaginal group B streptococcus colonization and heavy (3-4+) co

The group selection of variola minor in the Americas: an anthroponootic analogue for the myxomatosis epizootic in Australia.

It is an axiom of many parasitology texts that host-parasite systems coevolve toward a state approximating commensalism. While this hypothesis has an apriori intuitive appeal there is little empirical evidence to support it. The only documented case of a parasite evolving toward avirulence is the group selection of less virulent strains of the myxoma virus in the Australian rabbit population. It is hypothesized here that group selection also accounted for the appearance of variola minor in the Americas.

Association of Population Screening for Breast Cancer Risk With Use of Mammography Among Women in Medically Underserved Racial and Ethnic Minority Groups.

IMPORTANCE: Black women bear a disproportionate burden of breast cancer mortality in the US, in part due to inequities in the use of mammography. Population screening for breast cancer risk in primary care is a promising strategy for mitigating breast cancer disparities, but it is unknown whether this strategy would be associated with increased mammography rates in underserved women of racial and ethnic minority groups. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether providing individualized breast cancer risk estimates is associated with an increase in the rate of screening mammography. DESIGN, SETTING, AND

Meeting the needs of regional minority groups: the University of Washington's programs to increase the American Indian and Alaskan native physician workforce.

Minority populations in the United States are growing rapidly, but physician workforce diversity has not kept pace with the needs of underserved communities. Minorities comprised 26.4% of the population in 1995; by 2050, these groups will comprise nearly half. Medical schools must enlist greater numbers of minority physicians and train all physicians to provide culturally responsive care. The University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM) is the nation's only medical school that serves a five-state region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho). Its mission addresses the need to

Trial Forge Guidance 3: randomised trials and how to recruit and retain individuals from ethnic minority groups-practical guidance to support better practice.

Randomised trials, especially those intended to directly inform clinical practice and policy, should be designed to reflect all those who could benefit from the intervention under test should it prove effective. This does not always happen. The UK National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) INCLUDE project identified many groups in the UK that are under-served by trials, including ethnic minorities. This guidance document presents four key recommendations for designing and running trials that include the ethnic groups needed by the trial. These are (1) ensure eligibility criteria and

First survey of Enterocytozoon bieneusi and dominant genotype Peru6 among ethnic minority groups in southwestern China's Yunnan Province and assessment of risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Enterocytozoon bieneusi is the most common microsporidian species causing diarrhea and other intestinal disorders in humans and animals. Like other infectious diseases, microsporidiosis usually disproportionately affects poor populations. In China, some ethnic minority areas remain poor. Currently, no information of E. bieneusi infection is available in minority populations. The present aims were to understand occurrence and genetic characterizations of E. bieneusi in ethnic minority groups from a poverty-stricken ethnic township in Yunnan Province, and to assess risk factors for E
