How mobile units are shaping opioid treatment experiences: Insights from patients of mobile and traditional opioid treatment programs.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent barriers to accessing medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) exist. To ease barriers, CODAC Behavioral Healthcare, the largest opioid treatment provider in Rhode Island, began operating its mobile medical unit (MMU) providing MOUD and other healthcare services to a high-need community in July 2022. We evaluated current operations through formative interviews with individuals receiving care from the MMU and compared their perspectives with those of patients at traditional brick-and-mortar clinics. METHODS: Authors conducted and transcribed one-on-one interviews in

Care for Adults with Mild Intellectual Disability in a Mobile Dental Unit: Considerations, Recommendations and Learnings.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with Intellectual Disability (ID) have the right to receive the highest standard of healthcare, with supportive environments that address their cognitive, physical, and emotional needs. Unfortunately, adults with ID are frequently marginalized in society, and free coverage for their medical services is limited. CONTEXT: With the purpose of improving access to dental care services for groups in situations of vulnerability, Community Dentistry and the implementation of Mobile Dental Units (MDUs) have been a solution to cover health needs and to reduce barriers regardin

Nurse Practitioner Roles and Contributions in a Mobile Health Clinic for People Experiencing Homelessness.

AIM: To present a descriptive, practice-based account of a nurse practitioner-led mobile health clinic serving individuals experiencing homelessness, guided by the PRIME-NP framework. BACKGROUND: Homelessness is associated with health inequities and limited access to care. Individuals face barriers including transportation, stigma, and displacement. Although mobile outreach may help address these barriers, little work has examined competencies for nurse practitioners in unstable, resource-limited environments. In this clinic, nurse practitioners provide field-based care, including wound manag

Positioning Medical Assistants for a Greater Role in the Era of Health Reform.

Medical assistants (MAs) are one of the fastest-growing occupations in the United States. As of 2014 there were about 585,000 MAs in the United States, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics projected the MA workforce to grow by 29% from 2012 to 2022. The MA population is primarily female, ethnically and racially diverse, and paid about $15.01 per hour. MAs are primarily educated in private schools, many at for-profit institutions. The MA curriculum and length of training can be quite varied and can lead to uneven preparation for practice. Traditionally, the MA role has involved a limited clinical

Comparison of clients of a mobile health van and a traditional STD clinic.

The objective of this study was to determine if there were any demographic, behavioral, and clinical differences between clients seen aboard a mobile sexually transmitted disease (STD)/HIV clinic compared with those seen in a traditional municipal STD/HIV health clinic for receipt of STD/HIV services. Clients seen in the two different settings were interviewed about demographic characteristics, reasons for their visit, STD history, their HIV/STD risk factors, and the risk factors of their sex partners. Clients in both settings were also offered testing for syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and H

Mobile unit for use in mass screening for breast cancer.

Since 1977, mass screening for breast cancer has been carried out in Miyagi prefecture, Japan. The main activities involve itinerant screening in the communities and group screening at the workplaces. The first step in this screening is the physical examination; the second step, for women with suspicious findings, is examination by mammography and ultrasonography, in a specially equipped mobile unit. The number of subjects screened over a seven-year period ending in March, 1984, was 94,953. Mammography was performed on 4,485 subjects (4.7 per cent) Breast cancer was detected in 116 subjects (0

Indigenous patient experiences of returning to country: a qualitative evaluation on the Country Health SA Dialysis bus.

BACKGROUND: Rates of End-Stage Kidney Disease among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) Australians in remote areas are disproportionately high; however, haemodialysis is not currently offered in most remote areas. People must therefore leave their 'Country' (with its traditions and supports) and relocate to metropolitan or regional centres, disrupting their kinship and the cultural ties that are important for their wellbeing. The South Australian Mobile Dialysis Truck is a service which visits remote communities for one to two week periods; allowing patients to have dialysis on

A PROMETHEE based outranking approach for the construction of Fangcang shelter hospital using spherical fuzzy sets.

This study mainly aims to develop two effective and practical multi-criteria group decision-making approaches by taking advantage of the ground-breaking theory of PROMETHEE family of outranking methods. The presented variants of Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluation (PROMETHEE) method are acknowledged to address the complex decision-making problems carrying the ambiguous information, expressible in terms of yes, no, abstinence and refusal, owing to the preeminent condition and wider structure of spherical fuzzy sets. Both of the proposed approaches seek help from the

Economic analysis of a low-threshold mobile medical unit dispensing buprenorphine for opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Community Outreach Intervention Project (COIP) established a low-threshold mobile medical unit that is among the first to carry and dispense buprenorphine on-site at point of care in Chicago neighborhoods with high opioid overdose rates. A deeper understanding of the mobile medical unit implementation and operation costs is needed to inform sustainability and financial planning for healthcare systems across the country. This study measured the implementation, operation, and indirect patient costs of the UIC COIP mobile medical unit. METHODS

Pre-hospital response to major incidents.

Since the attacks of September 11, 2001 in the United States, and the subsequent anthrax scares, the approach to preparing for and dealing with major incidents has had to be re-thought. Major incident planning, training and preparedness, once the domain of NHS senior managers and frontline A&E staff, is now the business of all NHS nurses. This article provides the theoretical knowledge needed by nurses to operate at the scene of a pre-hospital major incident.

Forward surgical stabilization of penetrating lower extremity fractures: circular casting versus external fixation.

OBJECTIVE: There are two choices for the stabilization of penetrating lower extremity fractures in the forward surgical environment: bivalved circular casting and external fixation. The material and equipment requirements of these methods are of paramount importance in the austere forward surgical environment. METHODS: Casualties from the Battle of the Black Sea in Somalia 1993 were examined. Penetrating lower extremity fractures requiring immobilization were identified. The relative packing volume and weight for each method of immobilization were analyzed. Finally, the current literature con

Implementing a Mobility Program to Minimize Post-Intensive Care Syndrome.

Immobility in the intensive care unit (ICU) is associated with neuromuscular weakness, post-intensive care syndrome, functional limitations, and high costs. Early mobility-based rehabilitation in the ICU is feasible and safe. Mobility-based rehabilitation varied widely across 5 ICUs in 1 health care system, suggesting a need for continuous training and evaluation to maintain a strong mobility-based rehabilitation program. Early mobility-based rehabilitation shortens ICU and hospital stays, reduces delirium, and increases muscle strength and the ability to ambulate. Long-term effects include in

Clinician and Patient Perspectives on the Use of Passive Mobile Monitoring and Self-Tracking for Patients With Serious Mental Illness: User-Centered Approach.

BACKGROUND: Early intervention in mental health crises can prevent negative outcomes. A promising new direction is remote mental health monitoring using smartphone technology to passively collect data from individuals to rapidly detect the worsening of serious mental illness (SMI). This technology may benefit patients with SMI, but little is known about health IT acceptability among this population or their mental health clinicians. OBJECTIVE: We used the Health Information Technology Acceptability Model to analyze the acceptability and usability of passive mobile monitoring and self-tracking

Relying on the National Mobile Disaster Hospital as a business continuity strategy in the aftermath of a tornado: The Louisville experience.

On 28th April, 2014, a tornado left much of Louisville, MS and the local hospital, Winston Medical Center, in ruin. In the USA, temporary hospital solutions have been used to augment the mainstream healthcare system since the American Civil War. As memories fade, however, the necessary readiness for a temporary hospital also fades, at times leaving a patchwork of resources either underfunded or abandoned. With the creation of the Hospital Preparedness Program, several temporary hospital solutions were created in various states across the USA. In the present case, Mississippi and North Carolina

The validity of drug use responses in a household survey in Puerto Rico: comparison of survey responses with urinalysis.

AIMS: The available evidence suggests that the validity of drug use responses in general population surveys is low. We have conducted a household survey to examine viral infections in the general population of Puerto Rico employing a number of procedures believed to increase the validity of drug use responses, as well as confidentiality and privacy: telling participants of toxicological verification of drug use prior to the interview, ACASI self-interviewing, and interviewing outside households in mobile examination units. METHODS: The study employed a stratified cluster sample of 1654 adults
