BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs) play central roles in the relationship between adiposity and glucose metabolism, and they have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, but few studies have assessed their effects on complex geriatric syndromes like frailty that cross multiple organ systems. We sought to determine the relationships between NEFAs and incident frailty, disability, and mobility limitation in a population-based cohort of older persons.
METHODS: We analyzed 4,710 Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) participants who underwent measurement

This article presents a systematic review of the literature on correlates/predictors of mobility limitation among community-dwelling U.S. Hispanic older adults. A search of scientific databases (PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO) was conducted. After abstract and full text review, 20 epidemiologic studies that met all eligibility criteria were included. The theoretical framework of mobility was used to categorize factors related to mobility limitation. The majority of the studies reviewed (n = 17) examined some aspect of physical factors in relation to mobility limitation. Several factors emerged a

BACKGROUND: Self-rated health is a commonly used global indicator of health status. Few studies have examined the association of self-rated health and mobility with estrone and estradiol in men. Accordingly, we determined the cross-sectional, incident, and mediating relations between circulating estrone and estradiol levels with self-rated health, mobility limitation, and physical performance in community-dwelling men.
METHODS: The cross-sectional sample included 1,148 men, who attended Framingham Offspring Study Examinations 7 and 8. Estrone and estradiol levels were measured using liquid ch

BACKGROUND: Research has demonstrated a bidirectional relationship between physical function and depression, but studies on their association in migrant populations are scarce. We examined the association between mental health symptoms and mobility limitation in Russian, Somali and Kurdish migrants in Finland.
METHODS: We used data from the Finnish Migrant Health and Wellbeing Study (Maamu). The participants comprised 1357 persons of Russian, Somali or Kurdish origin aged 18-64 years. Mobility limitation included self-reported difficulties in walking 500 m or stair climbing. Depressive and an

BACKGROUNDS: Chronic kidney disease (CKD), anemia, and mobility limitation are important predictors of mortality. We aimed at investigating the interactions between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), anemia, and physical performance on 1-year mortality in older patients discharged from acute care hospitals.
METHODS: Four hundred and eighty seven patients enrolled in a multicenter, prospective observational study were included in the analysis. eGFR was estimated by the Berlin Initiative Study 1 equation. Anemia was defined on the basis of hemoglobin values. Mobility limitation was ra

BACKGROUND: Androgen receptor (AR) knockout male mice display hepatic steatosis, suggesting that AR signaling may regulate hepatic fat. However, the effects of testosterone replacement on hepatic fat in men are unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of testosterone administration on hepatic fat in older men with mobility limitation and low testosterone levels who were participating in a randomized trial (the Testosterone in Older Men trial).
METHODS: Two hundred and nine men with mobility limitation and low total or free testosterone were randomized in the parent trial to

BACKGROUND: Taking into account our rapidly ageing population, older people are of particular interest in studying health inequalities. Most studies of older persons only include measures of current socioeconomic status (SES) and do not take into account data from earlier stages of life. In addition, only classic SES measures are used, while alternative measures, such as car ownership and house ownership, might equally well predict health. The present study aims to examine the effect of midlife socioeconomic factors on mobility limitation and depressed mood three decades later.
METHODS: Data

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Need for inpatient care increases toward the end of life. We studied whether mobility limitation assessed approximately 5.8 years prior to death predicts the number of days in care during the last year of life.
METHODS: A population-based, prospective study with interviews conducted, on average, 5.8 years prior to death. Data on vital status and health care use were register-based. Participants consisted of 846 persons who had died between 1989 and 2004 at the age of 66-98 years. Participants were categorized as having mobility limitation if, at baseline, they reported di

BACKGROUND: Mobility limitation, a manifestation of impaired intrinsic capacity, is the first obvious sign of functional decline. However, few studies have been conducted on the prevalence and incidence of mobility limitation. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and incidence of mobility limitation in Chinese older adults (over 60 years old) and evaluate its impact on mortality.
METHODS: The study used two waves of data from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2011 and 2013. The prevalence and incidence of mobility limitation were assessed using the methods reco

BACKGROUND: Developing global evidence on the influence of health-related behaviors (e.g., sedentary behavior, diet) and mobility limitations on health requires global consortia from diverse sets of countries. Thus, the purpose was to translate and culturally adapt (i) the Sedentary Behavior Questionnaire (SBQ); (ii) the Dietary Habits Questionnaire adapted from the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) study; (iii) the Preclinical Mobility Limitation questionnaire for use in the Saudi Arabian context.
METHOD: 50 adult Saudi participants (mean age 41.7±9.6, 48% female) part

BACKGROUND: Assistance robots have the potential to increase the independence of people who require daily care due to limited mobility or being wheelchair-bound. Current solutions of attaching robotic arms to motorized wheelchairs offer limited additional mobility at the cost of increased size and reduced wheelchair maneuverability. METHODS: We present an on-demand quadrupedal assistance robot system controlled via a shared autonomy approach, which combines semi-autonomous task execution with human teleoperation. Due to the mobile nature of the system, it can assist the operator whenever neede

Chronic uncontrolled type 1 diabetes mellitus (type 1DM) is a very major risk for chronic systemic complications; specifically, the microvascular and macrovascular ones. Limited joint mobility (LJM) is a rare disease that complicates all types of diabetes and might indicate the high-risk odd for the diabetic patients to develop microvascular complications. We are reporting a 13-year-old female child with chronic uncontrolled type 1DM presenting with full blown clinical picture of bilateral hand LJM associated with significant growth failure yet has no clinical or biochemical evidence of microv

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: Little is known about the comparative effectiveness of exercise programs, especially when delivered at a high intensity, in mobility-limited older adults. We compared the effects of 25 sessions of high-intensity agility exergaming (EXE) and stationary cycling (CYC) at the same cardiovascular load on measured and perceived mobility limitations, balance, and health-related quality of life in mobility-limited older adults.
METHODS: Randomized to EXE (n = 28) and CYC (n = 27), mobility-impaired older adults (age 70 yr) exercised five times per week for 5 wk at 80% of age-pre

The purpose of this study was to stratify an older adult population for subsequent interventions based on functional ability, and to estimate prevalence, characteristics and impact of mobility limitations on health outcomes. In 2016, surveys were sent to a stratified random sample of AARP® Medicare Supplement insureds; mobility limitations were defined using two screening questions. Responses were stratified to three mobility limitation levels. Multivariate regression models determined characteristics and impact on health outcomes. Among weighted survey respondents (N = 15,989), severe, modera
