[Moebius syndrome with facial-dental impairments - rare or rather seldom diagnosed syndrome?].

As publications on craniofacial anomalies, malocclusions and dental complications recognised in patients suffering from Moebius syndrome are scarce, the authors of this paper decided to discuss the above aspects in broader terms along with the possibilities offered by orthodontic treatment. The etiology of Moebius syndrome has not hitherto been discovered, however the opinion prevails that it is brought on by multiple factors and conditions. In the analysed case, Moebius syndrome was diagnosed only when the patient was 6 years old. Based on the clinical examination, typical characteristics of

Self-perception of children and adolescents with Möbius sequence.

Möbius sequence is a rare congenital disorder usually defined as a combination of facial weakness with impairment of ocular abduction. Some studies suggest that psychosocial and psychiatric problems might be increased among affected persons. So far, there have been no studies on the self-perception of children and adolescents with the sequence. Seventeen participants with Möbius sequence (9 male, 8 female) aged 9-15 (mean: 11.59) years were studied. None of the probands was mentally retarded or had a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. Participants filled out well standardized German questi

[Moebius sequence: clinico-radiological findings].

INTRODUCTION: Moebius syndrome is an infrequent congenital, non-progressive disorder that is defined by facial palsy (usually bilateral) and oculomotor compromise. Its clinical spectrum is variable but it affects other cranial nerves and is associated with multiple malformations. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report the clinical, neurological and neuroimaging features and the progress of 20 patients (16 males and 4 females) who satisfied diagnostic criteria for Moebius sequence. RESULTS: Ages at the first visit ranged from 9 days to 23 months. Births had been normal in 50% of the patients. Facial

Impaired activity of the fusogenic micropeptide Myomixer causes myopathy resembling Carey-Fineman-Ziter syndrome.

Skeletal muscle fibers contain hundreds of nuclei, which increase the overall transcriptional activity of the tissue and perform specialized functions. Multinucleation occurs through myoblast fusion, mediated by the muscle fusogens Myomaker (MYMK) and Myomixer (MYMX). We describe a human pedigree harboring a recessive truncating variant of the MYMX gene that eliminates an evolutionarily conserved extracellular hydrophobic domain of MYMX, thereby impairing fusogenic activity. Homozygosity of this human variant resulted in a spectrum of abnormalities that mimicked the clinical presentation of Ca

Oral findings and comprehensive dental management of Moebius syndrome: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Moebius syndrome (MS) is a rare, non-progressive, neuromuscular, congenic disease involving the oral maxillofacial region. The present study aimed to describe the oral and extraoral findings in MS patients and their comprehensive dental management. METHODS: A digital search was carried out in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, restricted to articles in English from Jan 01, 2000, to Apr 02, 2023, following PRISMA guidelines. The methodological quality of the studies was evaluated following the JBI guidelines. Qualitative analysis was carried out on the over

An interesting case of systemic lupus erythematosus in a patient with Moebius syndrome.

Moebius' syndrome (MS) is characterized by a nonprogressive facial palsy associated with impairment in eye abduction, which can be uni- or bilateral. Some authors raise the possibility that patients with MS may suffer from social stigmatism due to their facial dysmorphism and that constant teasing and bullying perpetrated by people in the same social circle are adjuvants in the development of low self-esteem, behavioral problems, and even psychiatric disorders. Psychological stress, anxiety, and depression are factors contributing to both development and impairment of autoimmune diseases, such

Maternal homocystinuria and Moebius syndrome? Vascular aetiology.

A case of Moebius syndrome is reported in an infant of a mother known to have pyridoxine-unresponsive homocystinuria. The authors suggest that Moebius syndrome could result from early vascular insufficiency or disruption occurring early in development related to maternal homocystinuria. Moebius syndrome consists of congenital complete or partial facial nerve palsy with or without paralysis of other cranial nerves and often in association with other malformations of the limbs and orofacial structures, but usually without gross structural brain abnormalities.

Clinical and genetic characteristics of Chinese patients with congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders (CCDDs) are a group of diseases with high clinical and genetic heterogeneity. Clinical examinations combined with Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and whole exome sequencing (WES) were performed to reveal the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics in a cohort of Chinese CCDDs patients. RESULTS: A total of 122 CCDDs patients from 96 families were enrolled. All patients showed restrictive eye movements, and 46 patients from 46 families (47.9%, 46/96) were accompanied by multiple congenital malformations. Multi-positional high-resolution

Neurogenic bladder as a lurking complication in Moebius syndrome.

Moebius syndrome (MBS) is a congenital disorder characterized by facial and abducens palsy, sometimes accompanied with other cranial nerve palsies and comorbid conditions. Anatomical anomalies of the brainstem are assumed to be major etiologies of MBS. Its phenotypic presentation can be variable. We report a female patient with MBS who presented with neurogenic bladder (NB). She was born via normal vaginal delivery. At birth, she showed bilateral abducens palsy and right facial palsy. We diagnosed MBS by cranial computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging. She had recurrent urinary

Ankyloglossia Superior Syndrome With Complex Craniofacial Anomalies: Case Report and Literature Review.

Ankyloglossia superior syndrome is an extremely rare entity in which centrally located glossopalatine ankylosis is a principal feature. Some cases are accompanied by cleft palate, micrognathia, or tongue hypoplasia, and affected patients need careful nutritional and respiratory support. We describe a newborn girl in whom ankyloglossia superior syndrome comprised complex craniofacial malformations, including cleft palate, micrognathia, microglossia, and natal teeth as well as limb anomalies. Surgical treatment entailed release of synechiae, and glossopexy was performed successfully to prevent p

[Evidence level and grade of recommendation of the Ponseti method for arthrogryposis-related syndromic talipes equinovarus and Moebius syndrome: a systematic review].

BACKGROUND: Adduct congenital talipes equinovarus (CTE) or clubfoot is a common musculoskeletal malformation affecting between 1 and 4.5 out of every 1000 live births. It is usually associated with arthrogryposis and Moebius syndrome with the latter two being more difficult to treat as they require aggressive surgery to achieve a plantigrade foot. We therefore ask what is the evidence level and grade of recommendation of the Ponseti method to treat syndromic talipes equinovarus resulting from arthrogryposis and Moebius syndrome. METHODS: Systematic review according to the recommendations of t

A rare case of Moebius sequence.

We report a case of an 18-year-old male who presented with watering and inability to close the left eye completely since 6 months and inability to move both eyes outward and to close the mouth since childhood. Ocular, facial, and systemic examination revealed that the patient had bilateral complete lateral rectus and bilateral incomplete medial rectus palsy, left-sided facial nerve paralysis, thickening of lower lip and inability to close the mouth, along with other common musculoskeletal abnormalities. This is a typical presentation of Moebius syndrome which is a very rare congenital neurolog

Upper lip augmentation with double-row subcutaneous pedicled V-Y flaps in Möbius syndrome.

Treatment of open-mouth deformity and augmentation of the upper lip were performed using a combination of double-row V-Y mucosal advancement flaps and a V-Y skin advancement flap in 2 cases with Möbius syndrome. The mucosal V-Y advancement flaps were consisted for 2 rows of flaps. The first row was placed near the labial sulcus, including 3 V-Y advancement flaps. These flaps equally provided 3 directional augmentation for each segment of the upper lip. Second row V-Y mucosal advancement flap was used for the augmentation of the vermilion tubercle. In our cases, V-Y advancement flaps were used

[Möbius syndrome].

Möbius syndrome is a rare congenital disease characterized by facial and abducens nerve palsy. Children are unable to smile, frown, suck, grimace, blink their eyes, and to move their eyes laterally. The aim of this study was to analyze the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. Maxillofacial examination reveals: facial diplegia, retrognathism, palatine and dental malformations. Möbius syndrome is usually associated with multiple cranial nerve involvement, limb or orofacial malformation, and Poland syndrome. Although the pathogenesis of the syndrome is unclear, a number of mechanisms have bee

Severe congenital myopathy with Möbius, Robin, and Poland sequences: new aspects of the Carey-Fineman-Ziter syndrome.

We report a boy with severe congenital myopathy, Möbius-Poland sequence, Robin sequence, and severe developmental delay. We consider this patient to have Carey-Fineman-Ziter syndrome. Since this is only the seventh case reported, this case helps to define further the consistent manifestations of this recognizable phenotype. Additionally our patient shows laryngostenosis, intermittent episodes of high blood pressure and Poland sequence as important clinical symptoms.
