Transformer and generative models in dental and maxillofacial imaging: Narrative review of clinical evidence and future directions.

PURPOSE: This narrative review examined whether primary dental and maxillofacial imaging studies support, qualify, or counter the conclusions of previous systematic reviews of transformer and generative models, with findings assessed by topic rather than by review. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Structured PubMed searches covering 2019-2026 retained 159 records, and supplementary searches addressed topic-specific gaps. Dental and maxillofacial evidence was distinguished from medical transfer evidence. Thirty-six comparisons were then assessed for external validation, patient separation, comparator fa

Models of dental care for people experiencing homelessness in the UK: a scoping review of the literature.

Background People who experience homelessness have poor oral health and face barriers to accessing care. Recommendations have been outlined for health services to address their needs, termed 'inclusion health'. The Smile4Life report recommended three 'tiers' of dental service: emergency, ad hoc and routine care. Other medical services have developed into different models of care, for example mainstream practices with enhanced services for people who experience homelessness. There is little understanding of how inclusion health recommendations have been implemented across dental settings.Aims T

Explanatory models for total edentulousness, presence of removable dentures, and complete dental arches in a Swedish population.

On the basis of data from a questionnaire study of 3000 inhabitants of Orebro County, Sweden, aged 45-69 years, the relative importance of various socioeconomic factors for dental conditions were analyzed in stepwise logistic regression models. Two different patterns were found: one in relation to the best dental condition (complete dental arches), another in relation to the poorest conditions (total edentulousness and presence of removable dentures). Next to age, education and income showed the highest predictive values in relation to the presence of removable dentures and total edentulousnes

Periodontitis Prediction Model Using Linked Electronic Health and Dental Records.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal disease (PD) is closely linked to systemic health, with established associations with chronic conditions (eg, diabetes, cardiovascular disease). However, most predictive models rely solely on dental data, limiting the consideration of systemic factors such as medical conditions. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to enhance PD risk prediction by using linked electronic dental records (EDRs) with electronic health records (EHRs) and machine learning (ML). METHODS: We used EDR data from 20,946 adult patients at Temple University School of Dentistry's (2022-2023) axiUm®, lin

The miniature pig: a useful large animal model for dental and orofacial research.

Compared with small animal models such as rodents, large animal models are superior in many aspects for the study of human diseases and pre-clinical therapies. Since the development of the Minnesota miniature pig in 1949 at the Hormel Institute (USA), miniature pigs have been used as a large animal model in medical studies for scientific, economic, and ethical reasons. The oral maxillofacial region of miniature pigs is similar to that of humans in anatomy, development, physiology, pathophysiology, and disease occurrence. In this review, we describe the anatomical characteristics of the oral ma

The air-powder dental abrasive unit--an evaluation using a model system.

Air-powder abrasive systems are used in dentistry to remove dental plaque, calculus and stain from the surfaces of teeth. A model system consisting of a thin layer (14 micron) of vacuum-deposited aluminium was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of such a system. Photomicrographic analysis showed two distinct areas of removal: an inner area where removal of aluminium was complete, surrounded by an area where removal was incomplete. With the aid of a relocation pin attached to the nozzle of the instrument it was demonstrated that nozzle-target distance, the air pressure input, the flow of wat

A Hybrid Dental Model Concept Utilizing Fused Deposition Modeling and Digital Light Processing 3D Printing.

Currently, 3D printers, especially digital light processing (DLP) printers, are widely used in clinical dentistry. However, due to the shrinkage property of resin, their accuracy is not optimal for full-arch dental model printing. To overcome these limitations, fused deposition modeling (FDM) with filament that undergoes minimum shrinkage was introduced. Accordingly, a combination of FDM printing with the specific tooth die output of DLP printing for the full-arch dental model is proposed in the present report.
