Interpretable depressive symptoms screening via statistical reasoning-augmented large language models using wearable and environmental data.

Early assessment of depressive symptoms is essential for scalable and personalized mental health care. We developed a hybrid clinical decision support system (CDSS) that combines interpretable logistic regression with fine-tuned large language models (LLMs) to classify depressive symptom status using wearable-derived behavior, clinical features, and environmental exposures. This study aimed to develop a hybrid clinical decision support system by fine‑tuning a GPT‑based large language model with odds ratio-derived statistical reasoning to classify depressive symptom status from wearable‑derived

A clinical PREMISE for personalized models: Toward a formal integration of case formulations and statistical networks.

Over the past decade, the idiographic approach has received significant attention in clinical psychology, incentivizing the development of novel approaches to estimate statistical models, such as personalized networks. Although the notion of such networks aligns well with the way clinicians think and reason, there are currently several barriers to implementation that limit their clinical utility. To address these issues, we introduce the Prior Elicitation Module for Idiographic System Estimation (PREMISE), a novel approach that formally integrates case formulations with personalized network es

Statistical methods for linking geostatistical maps and transmission models: Application to lymphatic filariasis in East Africa.

Infectious diseases remain one of the major causes of human mortality and suffering. Mathematical models have been established as an important tool for capturing the features that drive the spread of the disease, predicting the progression of an epidemic and hence guiding the development of strategies to control it. Another important area of epidemiological interest is the development of geostatistical methods for the analysis of data from spatially referenced prevalence surveys. Maps of prevalence are useful, not only for enabling a more precise disease risk stratification, but also for guidi

Stacked sparse autoencoder networks and statistical shape models for automatic staging of distal femur trochlear dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: The quantitative morphological analysis of the trochlear region in the distal femur and the precise staging of the potential dysplastic condition constitute a key point for the use of personalized treatment options for the patella-femoral joint. In this paper, we integrated statistical shape models (SSM), able to represent the individual morphology of the trochlea by means of a set of parameters and stacked sparse autoencoder (SSPA) networks, which exploit the parameters to discriminate among different levels of abnormalities. METHODS: Two datasets of distal femur reconstructions

Social deprivation and rates of treated mental disorder. Developing statistical models to predict psychiatric service utilisation.

A review of the literature shows that there are strong associations of treated prevalence rates of psychiatric disorder with social class, sex, marital status, ethnic group and living alone; and moderate associations with living in inner-city areas and a high degree of residential mobility. The Jarman-8 index of social deprivation correlates with psychiatric admission rates for patients aged less than 65 years (R2 = 0.38). Individual census variables can themselves account for up to 0.71 of the variance in the admission rates, while combined in a stepwise multiple regression the census variabl

A Mechanistic Model of Symptom Dynamics: Implications for Statistical Network Analyses.

Mental health issues, particularly depression, arise from complex symptom interactions that traditional psychiatric models often fail to capture. We address this issue by introducing a continuous-time mechanistic network model of depressive symptoms, inspired by empirical findings. The model captures bistability between healthy and depressed states, illustrates transitions and tipping points, and shows post-shock persistence. It also allows the study of resilience by simulating responses to external shocks. Importantly, we demonstrate how the same underlying dynamics can give rise to different

Eigeneyes: A statistical model of whole-eye geometry and its applications.

Modeling the three-dimensional geometry of the optical surfaces of the human eye has important applications, including thestudy of myopia and presbyopia, as well as the planning of cataract surgery. In this paper, we present the Eigeneyes, astatistical shape model of the complete three-dimensional geometry of the human eye based on principal component analysis(PCA). The model was constructed from 572 Optical Coherence Tomography eye scans in which the cornea, crystallinelens, and retina were visible. Eigeneyes captures geometric variability across ocular structures using a small number ofcoeff

An investigation into ozone production based on statistical modeling in Jinan, China.

This study analyzed the effects of atmospheric pollutants and meteorological factors on ozone (O3) concentrations in Jinan using 2017-2023 daily data. Statistical analysis showed that Jinan's annual average O3 concentration has an upward trend, with pronounced seasonal variations (higher in spring/summer) coinciding with more O3 exceedance days. Agglomerative hierarchical clustering, employing Euclidean distance as the similarity measure, was applied to classify 2556 daily sea-level pressure fields into 6 types. Marked differences in O3 concentrations were observed among these pressure field c

The seasonality of cholera in sub-Saharan Africa: a statistical modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Cholera remains a major threat in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where some of the highest case-fatality rates are reported. Knowing in what months and where cholera tends to occur across the continent could aid in improving efforts to eliminate cholera as a public health concern. However, largely due to the absence of unified large-scale datasets, no continent-wide estimates exist. In this study, we aimed to estimate cholera seasonality across SSA and explore the correlation between hydroclimatic variables and cholera seasonality. METHODS: Using the global cholera database of the Glob

Linear System Models for Ultrasonic Imaging: Intensity Signal Statistics.

Despite a great deal of work characterizing the statistical properties of radio frequency backscattered ultrasound signals, less is known about the statistical properties of demodulated intensity signals. Analysis of intensity is made more difficult by a strong nonlinearity that arises in the process of demodulation. This limits our ability to characterize the spatial resolution and noise properties of B-mode ultrasound images. In this paper, we generalize earlier results on two-point intensity covariance using a multivariate systems approach. We derive the mean and autocovariance function of

Registration of a statistical model to intraoperative ultrasound for scaphoid screw fixation.

PURPOSE: Volar percutaneous scaphoid fracture fixation is conventionally performed under fluoroscopy-based guidance, where surgeons need to mentally determine a trajectory for the insertion of the screw and its depth based on a series of 2D projection images. In addition to challenges associated with mapping 2D information to a 3D space, the process involves exposure to ionizing radiation. Three-dimensional ultrasound has been suggested as an alternative imaging tool for this procedure; however, it has not yet been integrated into clinical routine since ultrasound only provides a limited view

Analysis of pediatric airway morphology using statistical shape modeling.

Traditional studies of airway morphology typically focus on individual measurements or relatively simple lumped summary statistics. The purpose of this work was to use statistical shape modeling (SSM) to synthesize a skeleton model of the large bronchi of the pediatric airway tree and to test for overall airway shape differences between two populations. Airway tree anatomy was segmented from volumetric chest computed tomography of 20 control subjects and 20 subjects with cystic fibrosis (CF). Airway centerlines, particularly bifurcation points, provide landmarks for SSM. Multivariate linear an

Statistical modeling to determine sources of variability in exposures to welding fumes.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Exposures to total particulate matter (TP) and manganese (Mn) received by workers during welding and allied hot processes were analyzed to assess the sources and magnitudes of variability. METHODS: Compilation of data from several countries identified 2065 TP and 697 Mn measurements for analysis. Linear mixed models were used to determine fixed effects due to different countries, industries and trades, process characteristics, and the sampling regimen, and to estimate components of variance within workers (both intraday and interday), between workers (within worksites), and a

Assessing the Cox model assumption as a statistical tool for classifying lymphomas.

INTRODUCTION: The Cox model is widely used in medical research for comparing survival. Lymphomas might exhibit important differences in long-term cure rate despite a similar survival. METHODS: Using log-rank test, we compared event-free survival (EFS), and the survival of 64 patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), 525 patients with follicular lymphoma, and 1136 patients with diffuse centroblastic lymphoma (CB). RESULTS: Although EFS and survival of MCL were significantly shorter than those of follicular lymphoma, checking the validity of the proportional hazards assumption shows that the d

The Evolution of Modeling Approaches: From Statistical Models to Deep Learning for Locust and Grasshopper Forecasting.

Locust outbreaks cause a significant threat to global food security and ecosystem stability, with particularly severe consequences in grassland regions, where grasshoppers also exert considerable ecological pressure. In comparison to grasshoppers, locusts typically occur at much larger spatial scales, as their strong migratory ability and collective movement behavior lead to greater spatial connectivity and autocorrelation. The forecasting of both locust and grasshopper outbreaks remains a formidable scientific challenge, primarily due to the complex, nonlinear spatiotemporal interactions amon

Natural history study and statistical modeling of disease progression in a preclinical model of myotubular myopathy.

Generating reliable preclinical data in animal models of disease is essential in therapy development. Here, we performed statistical analysis and joint longitudinal-survival modeling of the progressive phenotype observed in Mtm1-/y mice, a reliable model for myotubular myopathy. Analysis of historical data was used to generate a model for phenotype progression, which was then confirmed with phenotypic data from a new colony of mice derived via in vitro fertilization in an independent animal house, highlighting the reproducibility of disease phenotype in Mtm1-/y mice. These combined data were u
