Molecular detection and genetic characterizations of Cryptosporidium spp. in farmed foxes, minks, and raccoon dogs in northeastern China.

Cryptosporidium spp. are common intestinal protozoa causing diarrhea in humans and a variety of animal species. With the recent development of fur industry, a large number of fur animals are farmed worldwide, especially in China. The existence of identical Cryptosporidium species/genotypes in humans and fur animals suggests zoonotic potential. In order to assess the presence of zoonotic Cryptosporidium species and/or genotypes in farmed fur animals, 367 fecal specimens were collected from 213 foxes, 114 minks and 40 raccoon dogs farmed in Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning provinces, northeaste

Molecular detection and genome characterization of porcine circovirus type 2 in rats captured on commercial swine farms.

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is considered the major etiological pathogen of porcine circovirus-associated diseases (PCVADs) in pigs. Recently, PCV2 was also found in non-porcine animals such as cattle, rats, and mice. However, there was no record of PCV2 in rats in China. The goal of this study was to investigate whether PCV2 was present in rats (Rattus norvegicus, RN) on three swine farms, using molecular tools. PCR results showed that 30 of 95 (31.6 %) rat samples were positive for PCV2. Moreover, further genotype analysis suggested that 10 of 30 (33.3 %) were positive for PCV2a, 19 of

Molecular characterization of Japanese encephalitis viruses circulating in pigs and mosquitoes on pig farms in the Chinese province of Henan.

Since the first Chinese case report of Japanese encephalitis, Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) has circulated in China for at least 60 years. Even though pigs play a critical role in the JEV transmission cycle information on the prevalence of JEV in pigs has not been investigated in China. As the central Chinese province of Henan has the largest human population in China, a history of serious JEV and is the largest pig producing province it was chosen for this study. We have found that currently natural infection with JEV in pigs and mosquitoes is prevalent and both genotypes 1 and 3 co-circu

Molecular evidence for zoonotic transmission of Giardia duodenalis among dairy farm workers in West Bengal, India.

No study in the past has examined the genetic diversity and zoonotic potential of Giardia duodenalis in dairy cattle in India. To assess the importance of these animals as a source of human G. duodenalis infections and determine the epidemiology of bovine giardiasis in India, fecal samples from 180 calves, heifers and adults and 51 dairy farm workers on two dairy farms in West Bengal, India were genotyped by PCR-RFLP analysis of the β-giardin gene of G. duodenalis followed by DNA sequencing of the nested PCR products. The overall prevalence of G. duodenalis in cattle was 12.2% (22/180), the in

Molecular detection of antibiotic resistance genes in Staphylococcus aureus isolated from poultry farms of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a critical global health challenge and is currently addressed through a "One Health" approach that investigates its occurrence in humans, animals, and the environment, as well as the transmission pathways linking these reservoirs. In commercial poultry farms, antibiotics are routinely used to treat bacterial infections that are economically significant as well as to promote weight gain. However, data on AMR in Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) of poultry origin remain scarce in Nepal. Antimicrobial resistance in S aureus, particularly t

Pathological, microbiological, and molecular characterization of uterine samples in culled sows from farms with a history of reproductive failure in Brazil.

Reproductive failure in swine herds is an important cause of production losses and increased sow culling. While many diagnostic efforts focus on abortion-derived samples, the evaluation of reproductive tracts from culled sows may provide additional insights. This study aimed to characterize the histopathological, microbiological, and molecular alterations focused on uterine samples of sows from three Brazilian farms with a history of reproductive failures. A total of 207 reproductive tracts from culled sows were collected at slaughter and examined for gross, histological lesions, and bacteriol

Molecular discernment and histopathological features of oncogenic Marek's disease virus among different farmed avian species in Egypt.

Marek's disease virus (MDV) is a highly contagious tumor virus that causes detrimental outbreaks in poultry. Since its initial description, the virus's virulence and acuteness have progressively increased. During this study, we investigated suspected tumorigenic cases of MDV-1 infection among different avian species (chicken, ducks, and turkey) in various Egyptian governorates, including Al-Sharqia, Gharbia, Dakahlia, Port Said, Damietta, and Fayoum, between 2020 and 2023. A molecular study targeting the virulent oncogenic Meq gene revealed that the tumorigenic masses in chicken and duck tissu

Molecular and pathological investigations of Marek's disease outbreaks in vaccinated poultry farms in Plateau State, North Central-Nigeria.

Marek's disease (MD) is a devastating neoplastic disease of poultry caused by MD virus (MDV). MD is one of the several diseases limiting the thriving Nigerian poultry industry. MD is mostly diagnosed in Nigeria based on history and gross lesions without laboratory investigations leading to underreporting of the disease. This study investigated MD outbreaks in poultry farms using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and histopathology. Tumourous visceral organs were collected from dead chickens presented to veterinary clinics from 110 farms in Plateau State, North Central Nigeria from April 2013 to

Molecular epidemiology and glycomics of swine influenza viruses circulating in commercial swine farms in the southeastern and midwest United States.

Tracking the genetic diversity and spread of swine influenza viruses (SIVs) in commercial swine farms is central for control and to reduce the potential emergence of SIV reassortants. We analyzed the diversity of SIVs in nasal washes or oral fluids from commercial swine farms in North Carolina using influenza M qRT-PCR and hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) subtyping. We found a predominance of H1 HAs and N2 NAs in the samples examined. The majority of the H1 HAs could be further classified into gamma and delta subclusters. We also identified HAs of the H1 alpha cluster, and those of hu

Molecular and phylogenetic analyses of Salmonella Gallinarum trace the origin and diversification of recent outbreaks of fowl typhoid in poultry farms.

Fowl typhoid (FT) and pullorum disease (PD) are two important poultry infections caused by Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serotype Gallinarum (S. Gallinarum). S. Gallinarum strains are adapted to birds and classified into biovars Gallinarum (bvGA) and Pullorum (bvPU) as they are the causative agent of FT and PD, respectively. In Brazil, FT/PD outbreaks have been reported along the last 50 years, but there was a recent increase of FT field reports with the suspicion it could be due to virulence reversion of the attenuated live vaccine SG9R. In this study, we applied molecular biology assay

Physiological and molecular responses of the Pacific oyster (Magallana gigas) to low-frequency noise from offshore wind farms.

The mechanisms by which low-frequency noise from operational offshore wind farms (OWFs) affects marine benthic invertebrates remain poorly understood. This study used the Pacific oyster (Magallana gigas) as a model species and integrated physiological and biochemical endpoints with transcriptomic and metabolomic approaches to characterize intensity-dependent biological responses to low-frequency noise exposure. The results showed that noise exposure induced oxidative stress, as evidenced by elevated superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities and decreased antioxidant metabolites.
