Behaviour of albino and melanic variants of Biomphalaria glabrata Say, 1818 (Mollusca: Planorbidae) following infection by Schistosoma mansoni Sambon, 1907.

The behaviour of the albino and melanic variants of Biomphalaria glabrata of Belo Horizonte (MG. Brazil) was studied comparatively, in terms of their respective susceptibilities to infection by Schistosoma mansoni of the same origin, through observation of the elimination of cercariae for a three-month period and the calculation of mortality and infection rates, in control and in infected snails. The number of amoebocytes, granulocytes and hyalinocytes in the circulating hemolymph during different periods of infection was analyzed. The evolution of the infection in the tissues was observed by

Fine structure of the gonadal tissue of the horned octopod Eledone cirrhosa (Lamarck, 1798) (Mollusca - Octopoda) during sexual maturity.

The horned octopod Eledone cirrhosa, a medium-sized species found in Arabian Gulf off Saudi Arabia, was collected monthly from the Arabian Gulf off Dammam city during January to December 2022. Samples were dissected and prepared for examination using transmission electron microscopy. During genital maturation, seminiferous tubules are established in the testis, with active spermatogonia dividing. Spermatocytes 1 are observed in the tubule, followed by an increase in spermatogonia and spermatocytes in August. Spermiogenesis begins, with spherical spermatids evolving into elongated spermatids. Extensive population subdivision of the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis (Mollusca: Cephalopoda) around the Iberian Peninsula indicated by microsatellite DNA variation.

The Atlantic Ocean-Mediterranean Sea junction has been proposed as an important phylogeographical area on the basis of concordance in genetic patterns observed at allozyme, mtDNA and microsatellite DNA markers in several marine species. This study presents microsatellite DNA data for a mobile invertebrate species in this area, the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis, allowing comparison of this relatively new class of DNA marker with previous allozyme results, and examination of the relative effects on gene flow of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Almería-Oran oceanographic front. Genetic variation at

The life cycle of a zoonotic parasite reassessed: Experimental infection of Melanoides tuberculata (Mollusca: Thiaridae) with Centrocestus formosanus (Trematoda: Heterophyidae).

Centrocestus formosanus is a foodborne intestinal trematode that is native to Asia and has been introduced into the Americas and Europe. Although there are several studies of C. formosanus in definitive vertebrate hosts (birds and mammals, including humans), and in intermediate vertebrate hosts (fish and amphibians), there is little published information regarding interaction with its transmitting mollusc. In this study we studied the miracidial development of C. formosanus using a mouse as a source of eggs. Adult parasites were maintained in water in order to develop miracidia in intrauterine

Detection and genetic distance of resistant populations of Pseudosuccinea columella (Mollusca: Lymnaeidae) to Fasciola hepatica (Trematoda: Digenea) using RAPD markers.

Twelve natural populations of Pseudosuccinea columella snails, sampled in the western and central regions of Cuba, were analyzed using the RAPD-PCR technique to screen for resistance to Fasciola hepatica. Ten OPA primers previously shown to produce marker bands for resistance and susceptibility were tested. A new population of P. columella (El Azufre, Pinar del Río) exhibited the amplification patterns of resistant snails, and its resistant status was confirmed after experimental exposure to miracidia. No genetic variability was detected across or within the susceptible isolates. Similarly, th

Description of a new genus of Chromodorididae with a taxonomic review of Neptunazurea kempfi (Ev. Marcus, 1971) comb. nov. (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Nudibranchia).

Recent molecular phylogenies have shown the polyphyly of widespread genera within the Chromodorididae. In this context, the genus Felimare was resurrected to include Eastern Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean species previously included in Hypselodoris, plus Mexichromis porterae (Cockerell, 1901) and Mexichromis kempfi (Ev. Marcus, 1971). The somewhat controversial genus Felimare currently includes species with different external, radular, and jaw shapes as well as different reproductive morphologies, resulting in the absence of a clear diagnosis for the genus. Here, we advance the systemati

A new gelatinous host for pelagic fishes: First in situ record of an association between driftfishes (Stromateiformes, Ariommatidae) and nudibranchs (Mollusca, Phylliroidae).

We describe the first recorded association between fishes and nudibranchs in epipelagic waters. In situ observations and photographs of a juvenile spotted driftfish Ariomma regulus (Stromateiformes; Ariommatidae) swimming alongside the planktonic nudibranch Phylliroe lichtensteinii (Gastropoda; Phylliroidae) were made during blackwater scuba dives off Palm Beach, Florida, United States of America. In this paper, we describe this behavior, highlighting a previously undocumented zooplanktonic host used by fishes. This finding also demonstrates the importance of community science in advancing our

Plasma concentrations of lidocaine and prilocaine and analgesic effect after dermal application of EMLA cream 5% for surgical removal of mollusca in children.

The plasma concentrations of lidocaine and prilocaine after dermal application of EMLA cream 5% were determined in two clinical studies. The cream (10-16 g) was applied to a total surface area of 100-160 cm2. Each area was covered by a Tegaderm dressing (3M) in order to obtain occlusion. An application time of 2 hours was used. Two age groups of ten children were studied: 2-3 years and 6-8 years. In both groups venous blood samples were drawn prior to application and at 2, 3, 4 and 5 hours. In addition, in one of the studies, the cream was used during the surgical removal of mollusca in order

Characterization and comparative 3D modeling of CmPI-II, a novel 'non-classical' Kazal-type inhibitor from the marine snail Cenchritis muricatus (Mollusca).

The complete amino acid sequence obtained by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry of the proteinase inhibitor CmPI-II isolated from Cenchritis muricatus is described. CmPI-II is a 5480-Da protein with three disulfide bridges that inhibits human neutrophil elastase (HNE) (K(i) 2.6+/-0.2 nM), trypsin (K(i) 1.1+/-0.9 nM), and other serine proteinases such as subtilisin A (K(i) 30.8+/-1.2 nM) and pancreatic elastase (K(i) 145.0+/-4.4 nM); chymotrypsin, pancreatic and plasma kallikreins, thrombin and papain are not inhibited. CmPI-II shares homology with the Kazal-type domain and may de

Development of Angiostrongylus costaricensis Morera and Céspedes 1971 (Nematoda: Angiostrongylidae) larvae in the intermediate host Sarasinula marginata (Semper 1885) (Mollusca: Soleolifera).

In life cycle of Angiostrongylus costaricensis, veronicellidae mollusks participate as the invertebrate host while rodents as the main vertebrate host. The current work shows a sequential larval development of A. costaricensis in Sarasinula marginata, individually killed and digested from day 1 to 43, post infection. Some larvae, recovered from sedimentation, were submitted to selective staining after paraffin embedded or inclusion in JB-4 to study inner structures. As control, four slugs were used, two killed at the beginning of infection and the others at the end of the experiment. At day 2

Molecular identification of similar species of the genus Biomphalaria (Mollusca: Planorbidae) determined by a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism.

The freshwater snails Biomphalaria straminea, B. intermedia, B. kuhniana and B. peregrina, are morphologically similar; based on this similarity the first three species were therefore grouped in the complex B. straminea. The morphological identification of these species is based on characters such as vaginal wrinkling, relation between prepuce: penial sheath:deferens vas and number of muscle layers in the penis wall. In this study the polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism technique was used for molecular identification of these molluscs. This technique is based on

Reduction in reproductive activity from degeneration of testicular follicles in Megapitaria squalida (Mollusca: Bivalvia) exposed to metal pollution in the Gulf of California.

Over a reproductive cycle, the prevalence and intensity of degeneration of testicular follicles in Megapitaria squalida collected from the mining port of Santa Rosalia (a highly metal-polluted area), and San Lucas (a less polluted site), Gulf of California, Mexico, were evaluated. At San Lucas, most individuals had a typical testicular structure, and degeneration of testicular follicles was present in 9.5 % of spawning organisms. In contrast, at Santa Rosalia, 68 % of males, mainly in the ripe stage, had testicular degeneration (72 % severe intensity, mostly in medium and large-sized). Degener

Exploring a low-compatibility population of Biomphalaria glabrata (Mollusca: Gastropoda) as a model for studying host-parasite interactions with Schistosoma mansoni (Trematoda: Digenea).

Most populations of Biomphalaria glabrata are highly compatible with Schistosoma mansoni strains, making it challenging to identify low-compatibility models to host-parasite interaction research. This study evaluated a B. glabrata population with low compatibility with the LE strain (SmLE) as a model. First, pigmented low susceptibility (LS) and albino susceptible (S) snails were paired to produce three progeny groups: Crossings (CR) between LS × S, LS (LS × LS), and S (S × S). F1 snails were individually challenged with SmLE, and compatibility and reproductive parameters were analyzed. Second

Revision of the genus Pontohoratia Vinarski, Palatov & Glöer, 2014 (Mollusca: Hydrobiidae) from South Caucasus, with description of one genus and three species.

Stygobiotic hydrobiid snails of the western South Caucasus are taxonomically poorly known, and the diagnostic morphological and molecular boundaries within the genus Pontohoratia have not previously been tested using an integrative approach. We provide an integrative taxonomic revision of Pontohoratia based on shell and soft-part morphology and a multilocus dataset of five markers. Phylogenetic analyses recover Pontohoratia s. l. as comprising two deeply divergent, well-supported lineages: Pontohoratia s. str. (including the type species P. birsteini) and the lineage previously identified as '

Metal(loid)s content in Concholepas concholepas (Mollusca) and human health assessment in a coastal environmental sacrifice zone, central Chile (∼32°S).

In seafood, the study of metal(loid)s is essential to assess their toxicity and to establish risks of human exposure. This study investigates the content of As, Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb in Concholepas concholepas in a coastal environmental sacrifice zone (Chile) to assess potential human-health risks by consumption of C. concholepas. The Cu and Cd content was found to be above the safety level established in chilean and international regulations. The Estimated Daily Intake (EDI) and Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) for As were comparatively high with respect to the other metals analysed. The THQ-As and H

[Alopecia areata universalis and disseminated mollusca contagiosa in atopic dermatitis. Hair re-growth during treatment with interferon gamma--therapeutic effect or coincidence?].

A 35-year-old woman presented with severe recalcitrant atopic dermatitis, in association with disseminated mollusca contagiosa and alopecia areata universalis. After several weeks of systemic interferon gamma, which was administered subcutaneously, the viral infection cleared and, surprisingly, four weeks after starting treatment hair re-growth was observed. Complete remission of alopecia areata was documented few weeks later and persists. After four cycles of high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin, a sustained remission of the atopic dermatitis was achieved.
