Large-Area All-Textile Pressure Sensors for Monitoring Human Motion and Physiological Signals.

Wearable pressure sensors, which can perceive and respond to environmental stimuli, are essential components of smart textiles. Here, large-area all-textile-based pressure-sensor arrays are successfully realized on common fabric substrates. The textile sensor unit achieves high sensitivity (14.4 kPa-1 ), low detection limit (2 Pa), fast response (≈24 ms), low power consumption (<6 µW), and mechanical stability under harsh deformations. Thanks to these merits, the textile sensor is demonstrated to be able to recognize finger movement, hand gestures, acoustic vibrations, and real-time pulse wave

Predicting 2-y outcome in preterm infants using early multimodal physiological monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants are at risk of adverse outcome. The aim of this study is to develop a multimodal model, including physiological signals from the first days of life, to predict 2-y outcome in preterm infants. METHODS: Infants <32 wk gestation had simultaneous multi-channel electroencephalography (EEG), peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2), and heart rate (HR) monitoring. EEG grades were combined with gestational age (GA) and quantitative features of HR and SpO2 in a logistic regression model to predict outcome. Bayley Scales of Infant Development-III assessed 2-y neurodevelopmental

Identifying physiological measurements for medical monitoring: implications for autonomous health care in austere environments.

In a patient who has lost a significant amount of blood, avoiding cardiovascular collapse and impending circulatory shock depends on the ability to maintain adequate arterial blood pressure in the presence of significant central hypovolemia. Our analysis of hemodynamic, autonomic, and metabolic data obtained from healthy human subjects exposed to progressive reduction in central blood volume and supported by data from trauma patients provide evidence to support the following conclusions: 1. Because of autonomically-mediated compensatory mechanisms, standard vital signs can remain unchanged or

High-Sensitivity Flexible Strain Sensor Based on MWCNTs/HNTs Nanocomposites for Physiological and Handwriting Monitoring.

With the rapid development of flexible electronics and human-computer interaction technologies, the demand for high-performance flexible strain sensors for human motion and physiological signal monitoring has grown sharply. This study developed a sandwich-structured flexible strain sensor based on multi-walled carbon nanotube/halloysite nanotube (MWCNT/HNT) nanocomposites. A polydopamine (PDA) modification layer was first formed on the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film via in situ polymerization of dopamine (DA), which significantly improved the surface hydrophilicity and enhanced interfacial a

Non-Invasive Electrochemical Biosensors for Fibromyalgia: A Path Toward Objective Physiological Monitoring and Personalized Management.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complex chronic syndrome marked by widespread musculoskeletal pain, neurocognitive dysfunction ("fibro-fog"), and autonomic disturbances. Clinical management remains challenging due to subjective symptom reporting and the lack of definitive diagnostics. Emerging evidence points to a multifactorial origin involving central sensitization, neuroendocrine imbalance, and systemic immune-inflammatory alterations. A wide array of candidate biomarkers has been reported in FM, encompassing neurotransmitters (serotonin, norepinephrine), excitatory and inhibitory amino acids, metab

Mouse Cardiac Arrest Model for Brain Imaging and Brain Physiology Monitoring During Ischemia and Resuscitation.

Most cardiac arrest (CA) survivors experience varying degrees of neurologic deficits. To understand the mechanisms that underpin CA-induced brain injury and, subsequently, develop effective treatments, experimental CA research is essential. To this end, a few mouse CA models have been established. In most of these models, the mice are placed in the supine position in order to perform chest compression for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). However, this resuscitation procedure makes the real-time imaging/monitoring of brain physiology during CA and resuscitation challenging. To obtain such c

Long-term monitoring of intracranial pressure in freely-moving rats; impact of different physiological states.

BACKGROUND: Elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is observed in association with a range of brain disorders. There is limited insight into the regulatory mechanisms of ICP under physiological conditions, and consequently also under pathological conditions. Thereby, to understand the mechanisms underlying ICP dynamics, precise, valid and long-term ICP recordings are of importance in the preclinical setting. Herein, we used a novel telemetric system for ICP recordings which allowed for long-term recordings in freely-moving rats. The aim was to investigate ICP dynamics under different physiologic

Skin-interfaced biosensors for advanced wireless physiological monitoring in neonatal and pediatric intensive-care units.

Standard clinical care in neonatal and pediatric intensive-care units (NICUs and PICUs, respectively) involves continuous monitoring of vital signs with hard-wired devices that adhere to the skin and, in certain instances, can involve catheter-based pressure sensors inserted into the arteries. These systems entail risks of causing iatrogenic skin injuries, complicating clinical care and impeding skin-to-skin contact between parent and child. Here we present a wireless, non-invasive technology that not only offers measurement equivalency to existing clinical standards for heart rate, respiratio

Noninvasive assessment of altered activity following restraint in mice using an automated physiological monitoring system.

In the laboratory setting, typical endocrine and targeted behavioral tests are limited in their ability to provide a direct assessment of stress in animals housed in undisturbed conditions. We hypothesized that an automated phenotyping system would allow the detection of subtle stress-related behavioral changes well beyond the time-frames examined using conventional methods. In this study, we have utilized the TSE PhenoMaster system to continuously record basal behaviors and physiological parameters including activity, body weight, food intake and oxygen consumption in undisturbed and stressed

Effects of mental workload on physiological and subjective responses during traffic density monitoring: A field study.

This study evaluated operators' mental workload while monitoring traffic density in a city traffic control center. To determine the mental workload, physiological signals (ECG, EMG) were recorded and the NASA-Task Load Index (TLX) was administered for 16 operators. The results showed that the operators experienced a larger mental workload during high traffic density than during low traffic density. The traffic control center stressors caused changes in heart rate variability features and EMG amplitude, although the average workload score was significantly higher in HTD conditions than in LTD c

ST segment analysis as an adjunct to electronic fetal monitoring, Part I: background, physiology, and interpretation.

Fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) ST segment analysis (STAN) was approved in 2005 in the United States as an adjunct to electronic fetal heart rate monitoring to determine whether obstetrical intervention is warranted when there is an increased risk for developing metabolic acidosis. STAN has utility in the reduction of fetal acidosis at birth, decreased need for fetal scalp blood sampling during labor, and decreased need for operative vaginal delivery and emergency cesarean delivery for fetal indications. This article discusses specific fetal ECG changes and their significance and the use of the

Hyperventilation revisited: physiological effects and efficacy on focal seizure activation in the era of video-EEG monitoring.

PURPOSE: Hyperventilation is an activation method that provokes physiological slowing of brain rhythms, interictal discharges, and seizures, especially in generalized idiopathic epilepsies. In this study we assessed its effectiveness in inducing focal seizures during video-EEG monitoring. METHODS: We analyzed the effects of hyperventilation (HV) during video-EEG monitoring (video-EEG) of patients with medically intractable focal epilepsies. We excluded children younger than 10 years, mentally retarded patients, and individuals with frequent seizures. RESULTS: We analyzed 97 patients; 24 had
