A field evaluation of four larval mosquito control methods in urban catch basins.

Effective control of mosquitoes in rural Midwestern communities that lack organized mosquito control districts would be aided by baseline data on optimal breeding sites, interannual effects of climate on population emergence and abundance, and efficacy of various control options under field conditions. During 19 surveillance weeks in the summer of 2005, we sampled 100 catch basins each week that were distributed among 10 study zones. Catch basins within each study zone were subjected to 1 of 4 different mosquito control methods or were left untreated. Of the 10 study zones, 5 were in high-inte

INFRAVEC: research capacity for the implementation of genetic control of mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes represent a major and global cause of human suffering due to the diseases they transmit. These include parasitic diseases, i.e. malaria and filariasis, and viral infections such as dengue, encephalitis, and yellow fever. The threat of mosquito-borne diseases is not limited to tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Trade and climate changes have opened new niches to tropical vectors in temperate areas of the world, thus putting previously unaffected regions at risk of disease transmission. The most notable example is the spread of Aedes species, particularly the Asian tiger m

A retail audit of mosquito control products in Bidibidi refugee settlement, northwestern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Uganda remains one of the highest malaria burden countries globally, with refugee populations disproportionately affected. While government-led initiatives, such as free distribution of insecticide-treatesd nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying, are key to the vector control response, limited data exist on the role of retail markets in providing complementary mosquito control products (MCPs) in refugee settings. METHODS: As part of the Advancing Evidence for the Global Implementation of Spatial Repellents project, we conducted a retail audit across 61 refugee and host community

Retrospective Assessment of Preparedness for Mosquito Control Post-Hurricane Florence in North Carolina.

OBJECTIVES: Ideally, mosquito control programs (MCPs) use surveillance to target control measures to potentially dangerous mosquito populations. In North Carolina (NC), where there is limited financial support for mosquito control, communities may suffer from mosquito-related issues post-hurricane due to lack of existing MCPs. Here, study objectives were to (1) investigate the emergency response of a subset of NC counties post-Hurricane Florence and (2) develop guidelines and policy recommendations to assist MCPs in post-hurricane mosquito control response. METHODS: A survey was administered

Democratizing Public Health: Participatory Policymaking Institutions, Mosquito Control, and Zika in the Americas.

The Zika virus is a mosquito-borne virus spread primarily by Aedes mosquitoes. Zika cases have been detected throughout the mosquito's range, with an epidemic occurring from 2015 to 2017 in Brazil. Many Zika cases are mild or asymptomatic, but infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly in children, and a small percentage of cases result in Guillan-Barré syndrome. There is currently little systematic information surrounding the municipal spread of the Zika Virus in Brazil. This article uses coarsened exact matching with negative binomial estimation and ordinary least squares estimation

Biotechnological Potential of Microorganisms for Mosquito Population Control and Reduction in Vector Competence.

Mosquitoes transmit pathogens that cause human diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, chikungunya, yellow fever, Zika fever, and filariasis. Biotechnological approaches using microorganisms have a significant potential to control mosquito populations and reduce their vector competence, making them alternatives to synthetic insecticides. Ongoing research has identified many microorganisms that can be used effectively to control mosquito populations and disease transmission. However, the successful implementation of these newly proposed approaches requires a thorough understanding of the multip

Continuation of Mosquito Surveillance and Control During Public Health Emergencies and Natural Disasters.

Mosquitoborne disease outbreaks occur every year in the United States from one or more of the arboviral diseases dengue, West Nile, LaCrosse, Eastern equine encephalitis, and Zika (1). Public opinion communicated through traditional and social media and the Internet, competing public health and resource priorities, and local conditions can impede the ability of vector control organizations to prevent and respond to outbreaks of mosquitoborne disease. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and CDC performed a coordinated review of the concerns and challenges associated with continuation of m

PEGylated cyanine dye nanoparticles as photothermal agents for mosquito and cancer cell control.

Conversion of light energy to heat via photothermal conversion agents (PTCAs) is of great interest and has potential applications. Here, we described a heptamethine cyanine (Cy7) dye nanoparticles (Cy7-PEG NPs) prepared from heptamethine cyanine and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG400) via a simple solvothermal process as novel PTCA. Cy7-PEG NPs have absorption maximum at about 808 nm and good photothermal conversion ability. Upon irradiation, Cy7-PEG NPs can effectively kill living mosquito larva (Aedes albopictus) through heat generation. Furthermore, Cy7-PEG NPs have excellent phototoxic activity

Declining malaria, rising of dengue and Zika virus: insights for mosquito vector control.

The fight against mosquito-borne diseases is a challenge of huge public health importance. To our mind, 2015 was an extraordinary year for malaria control, due to three hot news: the Nobel Prize to Youyou Tu for the discovery of artemisinin, the development of the first vaccine against Plasmodium falciparum malaria [i.e. RTS,S/AS01 (RTS,S)], and the fall of malaria infection rates worldwide, with special reference to sub-Saharan Africa. However, there are major challenges that still deserve attention, in order to boost malaria prevention and control. Indeed, parasite strains resistant to artem

Potency of insect-specific scorpion toxins on mosquito control using Bacillus thuringiensis Cry4Aa.

Two insect-specific scorpion toxins, BjαIT and AahIT were produced as alkali-soluble protein inclusions in Escherichia coli. The inclusion bodies themselves exhibited no toxicity against Culex pipiens larvae. However, coadministration with Cry4Aa toxin enhanced the mosquitocidal activity by 2-3 fold. Insect-specific scorpion toxins can be good supplements for Cry toxin-based bioinsecticides.

Mosquito-borne disease surveillance by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

For a few years, a series of traditionally tropical mosquito-borne diseases, such as chikungunya fever and dengue, have posed challenges to national public health authorities in the European region. Other diseases have re-emerged, e.g. malaria in Greece, or spread to other countries, e.g. West Nile fever. These diseases are reportable within the European Union (EU), and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control collects information in various ways to provide EU member states with topical assessments of disease threats, risks and trends for prompt and appropriate public health acti

Analyzing the control of mosquito-borne diseases by a dominant lethal genetic system.

Motivated by the failure of current methods to control dengue fever, we formulate a mathematical model to assess the impact on the spread of a mosquito-borne viral disease of a strategy that releases adult male insects homozygous for a dominant, repressible, lethal genetic trait. A dynamic model for the female adult mosquito population, which incorporates the competition for female mating between released mosquitoes and wild mosquitoes, density-dependent competition during the larval stage, and realization of the lethal trait either before or after the larval stage, is embedded into a suscepti

Transcriptional control is relevant in the modulation of mosquito ferritin synthesis by iron.

In yellow fever mosquito cells (Aag2 clone), iron treatment induces a threefold increase in ferritin message (fer mRNA) and protein (ferritin) by 16 h. These data contrast with work in mammalian hepatocytes and fibroblasts in which fer mRNA levels do not change with iron stimulation, but ferritin levels increase 50-fold. Pretreatment of the Aag2 cells with actinomycin D blocks induction of fer mRNA and reduces the ferritin subunit synthesis, suggesting that iron induction of ferritin subunit synthesis is subjected to transcriptional control. A putative iron-regulatory protein has also been ide

Identification of Lysinibacillus sphaericus Binary toxin binding proteins in a malarial mosquito cell line by proteomics: A novel approach towards improving mosquito control.

Bacterial insecticidal proteins, such as the Bin toxin from Lysinibacillus sphaericus, could be used more extensively to control insecticide resistant mosquitoes. This study was aimed at identification of mosquito cell proteins binding Bin toxin. Results showed that purified toxin was toxic to Anopheles gambiae larvae and Ag55 cultured cells. Clathrin heavy chain (an endocytosis protein) and glycolytic enzymes such as pyruvate kinase, enolase and dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase were identified as binders of Bin toxin. The viability of Ag55 cells in the presence of endocytosis inhibitor, pitstop

Knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP), and acceptance and willingness to pay (WTP) for mosquito-borne diseases control through sterile mosquito release in Bangkok, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Arboviral diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika are public health concerns worldwide. Prevention and control of these diseases still depend on controlling Aedes aegypti mosquito vectors. Sterile insect technique (SIT) and incompatible insect technique (IIT) are environmental friendly approaches that show promising impacts. In order to plan an implementation of SIT/IIT technology, background knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) related to mosquito-borne diseases, mosquito vectors and their prevention and control, as well as acceptance and willingness to pay (WTP) for the

Modeling the Impact of Seasonality on Mosquito Population Dynamics: Insights for Vector Control Strategies.

Mosquitoes are important vectors for the transmission of some major infectious diseases of humans, i.e., malaria, dengue, West Nile Virus and Zika virus. The burden of these diseases is different for different regions, being highest in tropical and subtropical areas, which have high annual rainfall, warm temperatures, and less pronounced seasonality. The life cycle of mosquitoes consists of four distinct stages: eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. These life stages have different mortality rates and only adults can reproduce. Seasonal weather may affect the population dynamics of mosquitoes, and

Assessment of novel Lehmann's funnel entry trap prototypes performance to control malaria mosquito populations.

BACKGROUND: There is a global consensus that new intervention tools are needed for the final steps toward malaria elimination/eradication. In a recent study in Burkina Faso, the Lehmann Funnel Entry Trap (LFET) has shown promising results in the reduction of mosquito densities, even in areas where insecticide resistance is as high as 80%. The LFET requires no chemicals and is self-operated. However, one of the issues with the original LFET is the size of the funnel, which often occupies too much space within users' homes. Here, the performance of three new, smaller-sized LFET prototypes that c

Preventing yellow fever epidemics in Asian megacities: how can cities control mosquito-transmitted diseases?

The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us of the ever present threat from infectious diseases, this includes the ones we know about already and future unknowns. The mosquito-transmitted disease yellow fever has claimed thousands of lives over the centuries and it hasn't gone away. It is still endemic in tropical areas of Africa and Latin America, where it is kept at bay through constant surveillance, mass vaccination campaigns and some natural immunity within local populations. Despite this there are serious outbreaks from time to time. The Aedes mosquitoes capable of transmitting the virus from p

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles from Azadirachta indica--a most effective method for mosquito control.

Mosquitoes transmit major communicable diseases such as dengue, malaria, filariasis, Japanese encephalitis, chikungunya, and so on. Vector control is important in epidemic disease situations as there is an urgent need to develop new and improved mosquito control methods that are economical and effective yet safe for non-targeted organisms. In the present study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized from the aqueous leaf extract of neem plant (Azadirachta indica), and their effects on mosquito vectors (Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus) were assessed. The synthesised AgNPs were c
