Climate Change Favors African Malaria Vector Mosquitoes.

Malaria, a parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles, causes half a million deaths annually, mostly among children in Africa. While climate change is expected to significantly alter malaria transmission, previous forecasts have largely overlooked the species-specific responses of mosquito vectors which may substantially impact the outcome of such forecasts. Here, we for the first time estimate the future human exposure to each of six dominant African malaria vector species. Using an extensive mosquito observation dataset, robust species distribution modeling, and clima

MBORS: Mosquito vector Biocontrol Ontology and Recommendation System.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Mosquito vectors are disease-causing insects, responsible for various life-threatening vector-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika, malaria, chikungunya, and lymphatic filariasis. In practice, synthetic insecticides are used to control the mosquito vector, but, the continuous usage of synthetic insecticides is toxic to human health resulting in communicable diseases. Non-toxic biocontrol agents such as bacteria, fungus, plants, and mosquito densoviruses play a vital role in controlling mosquitoes. Community awareness of mosquito biocontrol agents is required to control ve

Controlling vector-borne diseases by releasing modified mosquitoes.

Aedes mosquito-transmitted diseases, such as dengue, Zika and chikungunya, are becoming major global health emergencies while old threats, such as yellow fever, are re-emerging. Traditional control methods, which have focused on reducing mosquito populations through the application of insecticides or preventing breeding through removal of larval habitat, are largely ineffective, as evidenced by the increasing global disease burden. Here, we review novel mosquito population reduction and population modification approaches with a focus on control methods based on the release of mosquitoes, inclu

Current status of genome editing in vector mosquitoes: A review.

Mosquitoes pose a major threat to human health as they spread many deadly diseases like malaria, dengue, chikungunya, filariasis, Japanese encephalitis and Zika. Identification and use of novel molecular tools are essential to combat the spread of vector borne diseases. Genome editing tools have been used for the precise alterations of the gene of interest for producing the desirable trait in mosquitoes. Deletion of functional genes or insertion of toxic genes in vector mosquitoes will produce either knock-out or knock-in mutants that will check the spread of vector-borne diseases. Presently,

The distribution and bionomics of anopheles malaria vector mosquitoes in Indonesia.

Malaria remains one of the greatest human health burdens in Indonesia. Although Indonesia has a long and renowned history in the early research and discoveries of malaria and subsequently in the successful use of environmental control methods to combat the vector, much remains unknown about many of these mosquito species. There are also significant gaps in the existing knowledge on the transmission epidemiology of malaria, most notably in the highly malarious eastern half of the archipelago. These compound the difficulty of developing targeted and effective control measures. The sheer complexi

Vector competence of Australian mosquitoes for yellow fever virus.

The vector competence of Australian mosquitoes for yellow fever virus (YFV) was evaluated. Infection and transmission rates in Cairns and Townsville populations of Aedes aegypti and a Brisbane strain of Ae. notoscriptus were not significantly different from a well-characterized YFV-susceptible strain of Ae. aegypti. After exposure to 10⁷·² tissue culture infectious dose (TCID₅₀)/mL of an African strain of YFV, > 70% of Ae. aegypti and Ae. notoscriptus became infected, and > 50% transmitted the virus. When exposed to 10⁶·⁷) TCID₅₀/mL of a South American strain of YFV, the highest infection (64%

Harmonic convergence in the love songs of the dengue vector mosquito.

The familiar buzz of flying mosquitoes is an important mating signal, with the fundamental frequency of the female's flight tone signaling her presence. In the yellow fever and dengue vector Aedes aegypti, both sexes interact acoustically by shifting their flight tones to match, resulting in a courtship duet. Matching is made not at the fundamental frequency of 400 hertz (female) or 600 hertz (male) but at a shared harmonic of 1200 hertz, which exceeds the previously known upper limit of hearing in mosquitoes. Physiological recordings from Johnston's organ (the mosquito's "ear") reveal sensiti

Epidemic yellow fever caused by an incompetent mosquito vector.

Arbovirus epidemics in a geographic region are believed to depend on the presence of susceptible or "competent" arthropod vectors. We demonstrate that an urban, Aedes aegypti-borne, epidemic of yellow fever occurred in 1987 although the mosquito vector was relatively resistant to infection and transmitted the virus inefficiently. Twenty-six percent of the experimental mosquitoes from the epidemic area that ingested yellow fever virus became infected and only 7% of these transmitted the virus. In contrast, 80% of an exotic susceptible strain of Ae. aegypti became infected and 43% were able to t

Rearing temperature influences flavivirus vector competence of mosquitoes.

Culex annulirostris Skuse mosquitoes (Brisbane strain) were reared at 20 degrees C or 27 degrees C and the adult females were experimentally infected by feeding Murray Valley encephalitis virus (MVE). They were then maintained (a) in the insectary at 20 degrees C, after rearing at either 20 degrees C or 27 degrees C; (b) at ambient outdoor temperatures, range 12.2-28.9 degrees C, mean 19.6 degrees C; or (c) at 27 degrees C after rearing at 27 degrees C. There was no significant difference in rates of MVE infection or transmission when mosquitoes were reared and maintained constantly at 20 degr

Insecticide susceptibility of some vector fleas and mosquitoes in Burma.

Rat fleas and mosquitoes are insect vectors of public health importance in Burma. Plague is endemic in Central Burma and DDT has been the principal insecticide used for its control to date. Dengue haemorrhagic fever, recently introduced and transmitted by Aedes aegypti, has been spreading to major towns since 1971. The rodents, Rattus rattus, R. exulans, Bandicota bengalensis, Mus musculus, as well as shrews were commonly caught during routine trapping in the country. Rattus norvegicus, prevalent in Rangoon City, is not found in Central Burma. The rat fleas, Xenopsylla cheopis and X. astia, we

Neutralization of Sindbis virus by antisera to antigens of vector mosquitoes.

Sindbis virus harvested from infected cultures of Vero cells and from Aedes aegypti mosquitoes was used in neutralization tests with sera obtained from guinea pigs immunized with ground A. aegypti and from guinea pigs repetitively bitten by mosquitoes. Employing these antisera, more mosquito-propagated virus was neutralized than was virus grown in cultures of Vero cells. The neutralizing activity resided in the immune globulin fraction and may reflect the production of antibody to vector antigens on the viral envelope.

Structural dynamics of dengue virus during human-to-human transmission mediated by mosquito vectors.

This review explores the structural dynamics of dengue virus (DENV) during human-to-human transmission mediated by mosquito vectors, primarily Aedes aegypti. DENV remains a global health concern, with increasing cases due to climate change, urbanization, and mosquito adaptation. The structural biology of DENV, including its envelope (E), membrane (M), capsid (C) proteins, and RNA genome, plays a critical role in transmission and infectivity. The transmission cycle begins when mosquitoes ingest the virus from an infected human and later transmit it to others after viral replication within their

Pyrethroid resistance in Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus: Important mosquito vectors of human diseases.

Aedes aegypti and A. albopictus mosquitoes are vectors of important human disease viruses, including dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika. Pyrethroid insecticides are widely used to control adult Aedes mosquitoes, especially during disease outbreaks. Herein, we review the status of pyrethroid resistance in A. aegypti and A. albopictus, mechanisms of resistance, fitness costs associated with resistance alleles and provide suggestions for future research. The widespread use of pyrethroids has given rise to many populations with varying levels of resistance worldwide, albeit with substantia

Plasmodium prevalence across avian host species is positively associated with exposure to mosquito vectors.

The prevalence of vector-borne parasites varies greatly across host species, and this heterogeneity has been used to relate infectious disease susceptibility to host species traits. However, a few empirical studies have directly associated vector-borne parasite prevalence with exposure to vectors across hosts. Here, we use DNA sequencing of blood meals to estimate utilization of different avian host species by Culex mosquitoes, and relate utilization by these malaria vectors to avian Plasmodium prevalence. We found that avian host species that are highly utilized as hosts by avian malaria vect

Superior infectivity for mosquito vectors contributes to competitive displacement among strains of dengue virus.

BACKGROUND: Competitive displacement of a weakly virulent pathogen strain by a more virulent strain is one route to disease emergence. However the mechanisms by which pathogens compete for access to hosts are poorly understood. Among vector-borne pathogens, variation in the ability to infect vectors may effect displacement. The current study focused on competitive displacement in dengue virus serotype 3 (DENV3), a mosquito-borne pathogen of humans. In Sri Lanka in the 1980's, a native DENV3 strain associated with relatively mild dengue disease was displaced by an invasive DENV3 strain associat

Modeling the spatial distribution of mosquito vectors for West Nile virus in Connecticut, USA.

The risk of transmission of West Nile virus (WNV) to humans is associated with the density of infected vector mosquitoes in a given area. Current technology for estimating vector distribution and abundance is primarily based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) light trap collections, which provide only point data. In order to estimate mosquito abundance in areas not sampled by traps, we developed logistic regression models for five mosquito species implicated as the most likely vectors of WNV in Connecticut. Using data from 32 traps in Fairfield County from 2001 to 2003, the mo

Infectivity of West Nile/dengue chimeric viruses for West Nile and dengue mosquito vectors.

West Nile virus (WN), an agent of significant human and veterinary disease, is endemic in the Old World and rapidly spreading throughout the Americas. Vaccines are needed to halt the geographic expansion of this virus and prevent disease where it is established. However, to preclude introduction of a vaccine virus into the environment, a live attenuated WN vaccine should have low potential for transmission by mosquitoes. A chimeric WN vaccine candidate was previously generated by replacing the membrane and envelope structural protein genes of recombinant dengue type 4 virus (rDEN4) with those

Impact of naled (Dibrom 14) on the mosquito vectors of eastern equine encephalitis virus.

In central New York, aerial mosquito adulticide applications have been used in response to eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) outbreaks and have targeted the swamp habitats of the primary enzootic vector of EEE virus, Culiseta melanura (Coquillett). The organophosphate insecticide naled (1, 2, dibromo-2, 2-dichloroethyl dimethyl phosphate) has been the insecticide of choice in this region. This study reports on analyses of 11 years (1984-94) of mosquito collection data from Cicero and Toad Harbor swamps in relation to applications of naled. Naled applications were successful in achieving short-
