Relative motion splint: active motion after extensor tendon injury and repair.

The relative motion splint was initially developed to facilitate postoperative rehabilitation after repair of extensor tendon injuries at the dorsum of the hand and forearm. It has subsequently been used for rehabilitation of sagittal band injuries and after repair of closed attrition extensor tendon ruptures in rheumatoid arthritis. This is much less awkward than other braces and can readily be worn during normal past-time and work activities. This so-called immediate controlled active motion splinting protocol has also more recently been applied to both operative and nonsurgical rehabilitati

Delayed response to animate implied motion in human motion processing areas.

Viewing static photographs of objects in motion evokes higher fMRI activation in the human medial temporal complex (MT+) than looking at similar photographs without this implied motion. As MT+ is traditionally thought to be involved in motion perception (and not in form perception), this finding suggests feedback from object-recognition areas onto MT+. To investigate this hypothesis, we recorded extracranial potentials evoked by the sight of photographs of biological agents with and without implied motion. The difference in potential between responses to pictures with and without implied motio

Cortical responses to object-motion and visually-induced self-motion perception.

We investigated the spatiotemporal cortical dynamics during the perception of object-motion and visually-induced self-motion perception in six normal subjects, using a 143-channel neuromagnetometer. Object-motion specific tasks evoked early transient activity over the right temporooccipital cortex, while self-motion perception, or vection, additionally was followed by sustained bilateral activity in the temporoparietal area. The specific signal distributions suggest to represent the different perceptual modes of object-motion and self-motion sensation.

Measurable Thoracic Motion Remains at 1 Year Following Anterior Vertebral Body Tethering, with Sagittal Motion Greater Than Coronal Motion.

BACKGROUND: Anterior vertebral body tethering is an alternative to fusion surgery for the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) that is purported to preserve spinal motion. There is limited information regarding the measurable motion that is maintained over the instrumented levels following thoracic anterior vertebral body tethering surgery in humans. The purpose of the present study was to assess radiographic spinal motion 1 year after anterior vertebral body tethering. METHODS: As part of a prospective U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigational device exemption study, 32

Robust motion detection and classification in real-life scenarios using motion vectors.

In dynamic settings such as security, autonomous driving, and robotics, effective motion detection and classification are crucial for accurate tracking amidst target and background movements. Traditional approaches, typically designed for static environments, face challenges in complex scenes with multiple types of motion. This research presents a robust algorithm for motion detection in fully dynamic scenarios, utilizing the macro block technique to generate motion vectors, followed by motion vector analysis to classify distinct types of motion. These include camera motion, object motion, bac

Usefulness of intravoxel incoherent motion MRI for visualizing slow cerebrospinal fluid motion.

BACKGROUND: In the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics, the pulsations of cerebral arteries and brain is considered the main driving force for the reciprocating bidirectional CSF movements. However, measuring these complex CSF movements on conventional flow-related MRI methods is difficult. We tried to visualize and quantify the CSF motion by using intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) MRI with low multi-b diffusion-weighted imaging. METHODS: Diffusion-weighted sequence with six b values (0, 50, 100, 250, 500, and 1000 s/mm2) was performed on 132 healthy volunteers aged ≥ 20 years and 36 patient

Comparison of Shoulder Motion Measurements by Visual Estimate, Goniometer and Motion Capture.

BACKGROUND: Brachial plexus birth injuries (BPBI) can result in lasting impairments of external rotation and cross-body adduction (CBA) that disrupt functional activities such as dressing, grooming, or throwing a ball. The purpose of this study was to compare the quantification of shoulder humerothoracic (HT) external rotation (ER), and glenohumeral (GH) CBA by 3 methods - physician visual estimate, goniometer measurement by an occupational therapist, and motion capture. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with BPBI (average age of 9.9±3.2 y) participated in this study. Mallet scores and visual esti

Motion - prophylactic banding of esophageal varices is useful: arguments against the motion.

Bleeding from esophageal varices leads to substantial morbidity and mortality. Despite advances in pharmacological and endoscopic therapy, as well as general supportive care, the mortality rate associated with acute variceal hemorrhage has not improved significantly over the past two decades. Prophylactic therapy with nonselective beta-blockers or long acting nitrates reduces the incidence of variceal bleeding in patients with cirrhosis, is cost effective and may improve survival. Surgical portosystemic shunting reduces the risk of bleeding but is associated with significant operative mortalit

The State of Motion: Demographic and Representational Consequences of Motion-Based Exclusion in FMRI.

Large-scale neuroimaging datasets are increasingly used to map relationships between brain structure, function, and behavior across the human lifespan. Routinely, analyses exclude participants who moved too much during imaging. While this decision is framed as quality control, it is increasingly recognized that head motion is not randomly distributed across individuals within a study, and so motion-based exclusion may preferentially remove people with particular characteristics relevant to the scientific goals of the study. Here we survey head motion and how it relates to participant character

Motion adaptation reveals that the motion vector is represented in multiple coordinate frames.

Accurately perceiving the velocity of an object during smooth pursuit is a complex challenge: although the object is moving in the world, it is almost still on the retina. Yet we can perceive the veridical motion of a visual stimulus in such conditions, suggesting a nonretinal representation of the motion vector. To explore this issue, we studied the frames of representation of the motion vector by evoking the well known motion aftereffect during smooth-pursuit eye movements (SPEM). In the retinotopic configuration, due to an accompanying smooth pursuit, a stationary adapting random-dot stimul

The segregation and integration of colour in motion processing revealed by motion after-effects.

Analysis of the colour and motion of objects is widely believed to take place within segregated processing pathways in the primate visual system. However, it is apparent that this segregation cannot remain absolute and that there must be some capacity for integration across these sub-modalities. In this study, we have assessed the extent to which colour constitutes a separable entity in human motion processing by measuring the chromatic selectivity of two kinds of after-effect resulting from motion adaptation. First, the traditional motion after-effect, where prolonged inspection of a unidirec

Motion--pancreatic endoscopy is useful for the pain of chronic pancreatitis: arguments for the motion.

Pain is the dominant clinical problem in patients with chronic pancreatitis. It can be due to pseudocysts, as well as strictures and stones in the pancreatic ducts. Most experts agree that obstruction could cause increased pressure within the main pancreatic duct or its branches, resulting in pain. Endoscopic therapy aims to alleviate pain by reducing the pressure within the ductal system and draining pseudocysts. Approaches vary according to the specific nature of the problem, and include transgastric, transduodenal and transpapillary stenting and drainage. Additional techniques for the remov

Modelling motion sickness and subjective vertical mismatch detailed for vertical motions.

In an attempt to predict the amount of motion sickness given any kind of motion stimulus, we describe a model using explicit knowledge of the vestibular system. First, the generally accepted conflict theory is restated in terms of a conflict between a vertical as perceived by the sense organs like the vestibular system and the subjective vertical as determined on the basis of previous experience. Second, this concept is integrated with optimal estimation theory by the use of an internal model. If detailed for vertical motions only, the model does predict typical observed motion sickness charac

Think Before You Move: Latent Motion Reasoning for Text-to-Motion Generation.

Current state-of-the-art paradigms predominantly treat Text-to-Motion (T2M) generation as a direct translation problem, mapping symbolic language directly to continuous poses. While effective for simple actions, this "System 1" approach faces a fundamental theoretical bottleneck we identify as the Semantic-Kinematic Impedance Mismatch: the inherent difficulty of grounding semantically dense, discrete linguistic intent into kinematically dense, high-frequency motion data in a single shot. In this paper, we argue that the solution lies in an architectural shift towards Latent System 2 Reasoning.

Better performance when recalling speed from object motion compared to texture motion.

Our daily visual environment abounds with motion. Accurately perceiving object speed is essential when avoiding collisions or intercepting moving objects. Accurately remembering object speed is equally essential, as moving objects may become temporarily occluded. Most studies of speed use texture motion stimuli (e.g., dot motion), which minimize spatial cues but do not reflect the natural spatiotemporal dynamics of moving objects. In contrast, object motion contains rich spatial cues that better capture real-world motion. Neural mechanisms underlying texture and object motion processing differ

Motion preservation and clinical outcome of porous coated motion cervical disk arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Artificial cervical disk replacements are commonly used to treat radiculomyelopathy caused by degenerative disk disease. However, long-term disk mobility and an effect on adjacent segment disease have yet to be demonstrated. We report improvements in clinical outcome after disk replacement but also demonstrate potential limitations. OBJECTIVE: To review clinical and radiological outcomes after diskectomy and disk replacement with the Porous Coated Motion (PCM) artificial cervical disk. METHODS: A retrospective review was done of consecutive patients who underwent 1- or 2-level PC

A Visual-Vestibular Model to Predict Motion Sickness for Linear and Angular Motion.

OBJECTIVE: This study proposed a model to predict passenger motion sickness under the presence of a visual-vestibular conflict and assessed its performance with respect to previously recorded experimental data. BACKGROUND: While several models have been shown useful to predict motion sickness under repetitive motion, improvements are still desired in terms of predicting motion sickness in realistic driving conditions. There remains a need for a model that considers angular and linear visual-vestibular motion inputs in three dimensions to improve prediction of passenger motion sickness. METHO

Patterns of motion loss in subjects with idiopathic loss of shoulder range of motion.

BACKGROUND: Subjects with idiopathic loss of shoulder motion have difficulty sleeping, performing overhead activities, and completing activities of daily living. Treatment has been variable in approach and success. Cyriax's proposed shoulder capsular pattern was external rotation most limited followed by abduction followed by internal rotation. This investigation was performed to determine if a consistent pattern of motion loss was present in subjects with idiopathic loss of shoulder motion. METHODS: Repeated measurement of 25 (22 female) subjects' bilateral shoulder patterns of motion were c
