Markerless motion capture for running: validity and reliability of whole-body, joint, and muscle kinematics.

Markerless motion capture can greatly enhance the accessibility and efficiency of running-kinematics analysis. In this study we aimed to establish the validity and reliability of a markerless motion-capture system (OpenCap) for measuring kinematics of the whole body, individual joints, and lower-limb muscle-tendon units, during running at various speeds. Markerless and marker-based motion-capture results were compared for 30 runners running on a treadmill at five speeds (8-16 km/hr). OpenCap demonstrated similar validity for joint angle measurements compared to other markerless systems that ha

A lower-back focused motion capture and electromyography dataset of Australian sheep shearers at work.

Lower back pain, the predominant cause of years lived with disability, is widespread among various occupations characterised by prolonged and repetitive movements, including healthcare, agriculture, and construction. Despite this prevalence, evidence on the time-dependent changes in muscular function and corresponding motor control systems that contribute to pain remains limited, largely due to the lack of experimental data collected in real-world environments over extended periods. This paper addresses this gap by introducing an open dataset from an intensely physical and repetitive activity-

Obesity-Specific Considerations for Assessing Gait with Inertial Measurement Unit-Based vs. Optokinetic Motion Capture.

Adults with obesity experience high rates of disability and rapid functional decline. Identifying movement dysfunction early can direct intervention and disrupt disability development; however, subtle changes in movement are difficult to detect with the naked eye. This study evaluated how a portable, inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based motion capture system compares to a laboratory-based optokinetic motion capture (OMC) system for evaluating gait kinematics in adults with obesity. Ten adults with obesity performed overground walking while equipped with the OMC and IMU systems. Fifteen gait c

Repeatability and minimal detectable change including clothing effects for smartphone-based 3D markerless motion capture.

OpenCap, a smartphone- and web-based markerless system, has shown acceptable accuracy compared to marker-based systems, but lacks information on repeatability. This study fills this gap by evaluating the intersession repeatability of OpenCap and investigating the effects of clothing on gait kinematics. Twenty healthy volunteers participated in a test-retest study, performing walking and sit-to-stand tasks with minimal clothing and regular street wear. Segment lengths and lower-limb kinematics were compared between both sessions and for both clothing conditions using the root-mean-square-deviat

Validation of Markerless Motion Capture for Soldier Movement Patterns Assessment Under Varying Body-Borne Loads.

Field performance of modern soldiers is affected by an increase in body-borne load due to technological advancements related to their armour and equipment. In this project, the Theia3D markerless motion capture system was compared to the marker-based gold standard for capturing movement patterns of participants wearing various body-borne loads. The aim was to estimate lower body joint kinematics, gastrocnemius lateralis and medialis muscle activation patterns, and lower body joint reaction forces from the two motion capture systems. Data were collected on 16 participants performing three repet

Development of Smartphone Application for Markerless Three-Dimensional Motion Capture Based on Deep Learning Model.

To quantitatively assess pathological gait, we developed a novel smartphone application for full-body human motion tracking in real time from markerless video-based images using a smartphone monocular camera and deep learning. As training data for deep learning, the original three-dimensional (3D) dataset comprising more than 1 million captured images from the 3D motion of 90 humanoid characters and the two-dimensional dataset of COCO 2017 were prepared. The 3D heatmap offset data consisting of 28 × 28 × 28 blocks with three red-green-blue colors at the 24 key points of the entire body motion

A novel dataset and deep learning-based approach for marker-less motion capture during gait.

BACKGROUND: The deep learning-based human pose estimation methods, which can estimate joint centers position, have achieved promising results on the publicly available human pose datasets (e.g., Human3.6 M). However, these datasets may be less efficient for gait study, particularly for clinical applications, because of the limited number of subjects, their homogeneity (all asymptomatic adults), and the errors introduced by marker placement on subjects' regular clothing. RESEARCH QUESTION: How a new human pose dataset, adapted for gait study, could contribute to the advancement and evaluation

A specialized motion capture system for real-time analysis of mandibular movements using infrared cameras.

BACKGROUND: In the last years, several methods and devices have been proposed to record the human mandibular movements, since they provide quantitative parameters that support the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders. The techniques currently employed suffer from a number of drawbacks including high price, unnatural to use, lack of support for real-time analysis and mandibular movements recording as a pure rotation. In this paper, we propose a specialized optical motion capture system, which causes a minimum obstruction and can support 3D mandibular movement analysis in real-

Three-dimensional Motion Capture Discriminates Extremely Mild Cerebellar Ataxia from Parkinsonism in the Upper Limbs.

Upper-limb motor symptoms in spinocerebellar degeneration (SCD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) frequently overlap, making clinical differentiation challenging in mild cases using the finger-to-nose test (FNT) or the diadochokinesis test (DDKT). This study aimed to identify quantitative kinematic markers that distinguish mild SCD from mild PD using three-dimensional motion capture. Twenty-six individuals per group-mild SCD, mild PD, and normal controls (NCs)--underwent motion analysis during FNT forward, FNT backward, and DDKT. Key parameters including segmental velocity ratios during FNT and rot

Motion capture driven analytical modeling of temporomandibular joint kinematics in healthy and temporomandibular disorder subjects.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative assessment of temporomandibular joint kinematics may provide objective insight into altered mandibular motion in subjects with temporomandibular disorders; however, motion capture-driven analytical studies incorporating higher-order kinematic descriptors remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate a motion capture-driven analytical framework assessing displacement, velocity, acceleration, jerk, and movement smoothness during mouth opening-closing in asymptomatic and temporomandibular disorder subjects. METHODS: Three representative subjects were analysed: one

Concurrent validity of Theia3D markerless motion capture for detecting sagittal kinematic differences between gait speeds.

We do not yet understand the concurrent validity of markerless motion capture (MMC) to measure kinematic differences between multiple gait speeds. This study determined the capacity of Theia3D (Theia Markerless Inc.) MMC to detect sagittal-plane kinematic responses to different gait speeds during walking (3 and 5 km/h) and running (10 and 12 km/h). Fourteen participants ambulated on a motorised treadmill, while marker-based motion capture, through optoelectronic cameras (Oqus 7+, Qualisys AB), and MMC, through videos (Miqus, Qualisys AB) were synchronously collected. Sagittal-plane changes in

BackMov: Individualized Motion Capture-Based Test to Assess Low Back Pain Mobility Recovery after Treatment.

Low back pain (LBP) is a common issue that negatively affects a person's quality of life and imposes substantial healthcare expenses. In this study, we introduce the (Back-pain Movement) BackMov test, using inertial motion capture (MoCap) to assess lumbar movement changes in LBP patients. The test includes flexion-extension, rotation, and lateralization movements focused on the lumbar spine. To validate its reproducibility, we conducted a test-retest involving 37 healthy volunteers, yielding results to build a minimal detectable change (MDC) graph map that would allow us to see if changes in c

Four-dimensional quantitative analysis of the gait of mutant mice using coarse-grained motion capture.

To analyze an abnormal gait pattern in mutant mice (Hugger), we conducted coarse-grained motion capture. Using a simple retroreflective marker-based approach, we could detect high-resolution mutant-specific gait patterns. The phenotypic gait patterns are caused by extreme vertical motion of limbs, revealing inefficient motor functions. To elucidate the inefficiency, we developed a musculoskeletal computer model of the mouse hindlimb based on X-ray CT data. By integrating motion data with the model, we determined mutant-specific musculotendon lengths, suggesting that three major muscles were in

Wireless inertial measurement unit-based methods for measuring lumbopelvic-hip range of motion are valid compared with optical motion capture as golden standard.

BACKGROUND: Lumbopelvic-hip motions in the sagittal plane are critical in distinguishing between individuals with Low Back Pain (LBP) and healthy counterparts. Assessment of these motions involves evaluation of the range of motion, timing, coordination, alignment, and functional performance. Traditional, golden standard devices, like optical motion capture systems, are costly and limited to lab settings. Alternatively, Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) potentially offer an affordable solution that allows movement assessment in daily life. METHODS: This cross-sectional study compares two IMU-b

Trunk Range of Motion and Patient Outcomes After Anterior Vertebral Body Tethering Versus Posterior Spinal Fusion: Comparison Using Computerized 3D Motion Capture Technology.

BACKGROUND: Anterior vertebral body tethering (AVBT) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is postulated to preserve motion compared with traditional posterior spinal fusion (PSF), but few studies exist to date. We used a validated computerized 3D model to compare trunk motion between patients treated with PSF and AVBT, and analyzed trunk motion in relation to the lowest instrumented vertebra (LIV). METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective review of a consecutive series of skeletally immature patients with AIS who underwent motion analysis prior to PSF (n = 47) or AVBT (n = 65) and
