Motion versus position in the perception of head-centred movement.

Abstract. Observers can recover motion with respect to the head during an eye movement by comparing signals encoding retinal motion and the velocity of pursuit. Evidently there is a mismatch between these signals because perceived head-centred motion is not always veridical. One example is the Filehne illusion, in which a stationary object appears to move in the opposite direction to pursuit. Like the motion aftereffect, the phenomenal experience of the Filehne illusion is one in which the stimulus moves but does not seem to go anywhere. This raises problems when measuring the illusion by moti

Does perception of biological motion rely on specific brain regions?

Perception of biological motions plays a major adaptive role in identifying, interpreting, and predicting the actions of others. It may therefore be hypothesized that the perception of biological motions is subserved by a specific neural network. Here we used fMRI to verify this hypothesis. In a group of 10 healthy volunteers, we explored the hemodynamic responses to seven types of visual motion displays: drifting random dots, random dot cube, random dot cube with masking elements, upright point-light walker, inverted point-light walker, upright point-light walker display with masking elements

Attentional demands of perception of passive self-motion in darkness.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether significant attentional resources are required to accurately monitor changes in bodily orientation, using vestibular information. This question was addressed firstly using a dual-task paradigm in which orientation perception tasks and a speeded auditory tone discrimination task were carried out either singly or in combination. For the active orientation perception task, subjects were seated in darkness on a motorised chair which could be rotated about an earth-vertical axis. Following passive angular displacements, subjects were required to re

Motion perception thresholds in areas of glaucomatous visual field loss.

This study examined whether one can differentiate between areas of known visual field loss and areas of known relative field sparing in eyes with primary open angle glaucoma using motion coherence thresholds. Two visual field locations from patients with primary open angle glaucoma (n = 14), which differed significantly in sensitivity, were selected for presentation of a motion stimulus. In the area of visual field loss mean threshold was 17.4 +/- 4.1 dB (1.74 +/- 0.41 log units relative to the brightest stimulus). In the area of relative field sparing mean threshold was 27.0 +/- 3.6 dB (2.70

Effects of vestibular and visual motion perception on task performance.

The effects of foveal and peripheral visual, as well as vestibular, cues on the performance and control behaviour of subjects in two different roll control tasks were studied in a moving base flight simulator with low noise motion characteristics. Two different roll control tasks were used, one being a following task (or compensatory tracking task) where a displayed random signal was to be tracked, the other being a disturbance task in which a random signal perturbed the controlled system and the roll angle was to be kept at zero. Consistent improvement in controller performance was found afte

Long range interactions between object-motion and self-motion in the perception of movement in depth.

Self-motion through a three-dimensional array of objects creates a radial flow pattern on the retina. We superimposed a simulated object moving in depth on such a flow pattern to investigate the effect of the flow pattern on judgments of both the time to collision (TTC) with an approaching object and the trajectory of that object. Our procedure allowed us to decouple the direction and speed of simulated self motion-in-depth (MID) from the direction and speed of simulated object MID. In Experiment 1 we found that objects with the same closing speed were perceived to have a higher closing speed

Deficits in Motion and Form Perception in Infantile Nystagmus Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Visual deficits in infantile nystagmus syndrome (INS) could be a result of retinal blur from excessive eye movements and/or cortical changes from visual deprivation. We measured global motion and form sensitivity in INS to compare deficits between motion and form perception and to decipher the role of internal noise (local deficit such as eye movement) and sampling efficiency (global cortical deficit). METHODS: A total of 30 participants (14.40 ± 4.83 years) with INS and 30 age-matched controls discriminated the direction of motion and orientation of physically equivalent translation

All-Gel-Based Triboelectric Noncontact Sensor for Human Motion Perception.

Flexible noncontact sensors are of great significance in contemporary applications. Nevertheless, conventional noncontact sensors that rely on metal electrodes have limited flexibility, and their multilayer architectures are likely to experience interfacial delamination during extended use. To tackle these problems, we introduce an all-gel-based flexible triboelectric noncontact sensor, which consists of two parts, i.e., the gelatin/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/graphene (G) electrode hydrogel and PVA/cellulose/carbon nanotubes (C

Interhemispheric control of sensory cue integration and self-motion perception.

Spatial orientation necessitates the integration of visual and vestibular sensory cues, in-turn facilitating self-motion perception. However, the neural mechanisms underpinning sensory integration remain unknown. Recently we have illustrated that spatial orientation and vestibular thresholds are influenced by interhemispheric asymmetries associated with the posterior parietal cortices (PPC) that predominantly house the vestibulo-cortical network. Given that sensory integration is a prerequisite to both spatial orientation and motion perception, we hypothesized that sensory integration is simil

Perception of the dynamic visual vertical during sinusoidal linear motion.

The vestibular system provides information for spatial orientation. However, this information is ambiguous: because the otoliths sense the gravitoinertial force, they cannot distinguish gravitational and inertial components. As a consequence, prolonged linear acceleration of the head can be interpreted as tilt, referred to as the somatogravic effect. Previous modeling work suggests that the brain disambiguates the otolith signal according to the rules of Bayesian inference, combining noisy canal cues with the a priori assumption that prolonged linear accelerations are unlikely. Within this mod

The influence of spontaneous brain oscillations on apparent motion perception.

A good example of inferential processes in perception is long-range apparent motion (AM), the illusory percept of visual motion that occurs when two spatially distinct stationary visual objects are presented in alternating sequence. The AM illusion is strongest at presentation frequencies around 3 Hz. At lower presentation frequencies, the percept varies from trial to trial between AM and sequential alternation, while at higher frequencies perception varies between AM and two simultaneously flickering objects. Previous studies have demonstrated that prestimulus alpha oscillations explain trial

Motion perception without Nystagmus--a novel manifestation of cerebellar stroke.

OBJECTIVE: The motion perception and the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) each serve distinct functions. The VOR keeps the gaze steady on the target of interest, whereas vestibular perception serves a number of tasks, including awareness of self-motion and orientation in space. VOR and motion perception might abide the same neurophysiological principles, but their distinct anatomical correlates were proposed. In patients with cerebellar stroke in distribution of medial division of posterior inferior cerebellar artery, we asked whether specific location of the focal lesion in vestibulocerebellum c

Perception of affect in biological motion cues in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Nonverbal motion cues (a clenched fist) convey essential information about the intentions of the actor. Individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) have demonstrated impairment in deciphering intention from facial affective cues, but it is unknown whether such deficits extend to deciphering affect from body motion cues. METHOD: We examined the capacities of adults with AN (n = 21) or those weight restored for ≥12 months (WR; n = 20) to perceive affect in biological motion cues relative to healthy controls (HC; n = 23). RESULTS: Overall, individuals with AN evidenced greater deficit in

Neural correlates of coherent and biological motion perception in autism.

Recent evidence suggests those with autism may be generally impaired in visual motion perception. To examine this, we investigated both coherent and biological motion processing in adolescents with autism employing both psychophysical and fMRI methods. Those with autism performed as well as matched controls during coherent motion perception but had significantly higher thresholds for biological motion perception. The autism group showed reduced posterior Superior Temporal Sulcus (pSTS), parietal and frontal activity during a biological motion task while showing similar levels of activity in MT

Neurophysiological and behavioural correlates of coherent motion perception in dyslexia.

Coherent motion perception was tested in nine adolescents with dyslexia and 10 control participants matched for age and IQ using low contrast stimuli with three levels of coherence (10%, 25% and 40%). Event-related potentials (ERPs) and behavioural performance data were obtained. No significant between-group differences were found in performance accuracy and response latencies of correct responses, for early (P1, N1, and P2) or late (P3) ERP peaks. However, attenuated early ERPs in the 10% coherent condition correlated significantly with lower performance accuracy (r = -.66) and with the magni

3D surface perception from motion involves a temporal-parietal network.

Previous research has suggested that three-dimensional (3D) structure-from-motion (SFM) perception in humans involves several motion-sensitive occipital and parietal brain areas. By contrast, SFM perception in nonhuman primates seems to involve the temporal lobe including areas MT, MST and FST. The present functional magnetic resonance imaging study compared several motion-sensitive regions of interest including the superior temporal sulcus (STS) while human observers viewed horizontally moving dots that defined either a 3D corrugated surface or a 3D random volume. Low-level stimulus features

Altered motion perception in migraineurs: evidence for interictal cortical hyperexcitability.

Much research on visual functions in migraine has pinpointed the existence of abnormal visual processing between attacks. However, it is not clear if this is due to cortical hyper- or hypoexcitability. We aimed to clarify this issue by comparing motion perception thresholds of subjects with migraine with (MA) or without aura (MoA) and control subjects. Two types of dot kinetograms were used: in the first experiment coherently moving dots were presented in an incoherent environment, while in the second only coherent motion was seen. Subjects with migraine displayed significantly impaired motion

Interaction of retinal image and eye velocity in motion perception.

When we move our eyes, why does the world look stable even as its image flows across our retinas, and why do afterimages, which are stationary on the retinas, appear to move? Current theories say this is because we perceive motion by summation: if an object slips across the retina at r degrees/s while the eye turns at e degrees/s, the object's perceived velocity in space should be r + e. We show that activity in MT+, the visual-motion complex in human cortex, does reflect a mix of r and e rather than r alone. But we show also that, for optimal perception, r and e should not summate; rather, th

The functional neuroanatomy of implicit-motion perception or representational momentum.

BACKGROUND: When we view static scenes that imply motion - such as an object dropping off a shelf - recognition memory for the position of the object is extrapolated forward. It is as if the object in our mind's eye comes alive and continues on its course. This phenomenon is known as representational momentum and results in a distortion of recognition memory in the implied direction of motion. Representational momentum is modifiable; simply labelling a drawing of a pointed object as 'rocket' will facilitate the effect, whereas the label 'steeple' will impede it. We used functional magnetic res

OBJECTIVE: To study the characteristics of the motion perception (MP) in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). METHOD: Forty-one patients with POAG (67 eyes) and 56 (112 eyes) normal subjects were examined by the motion perception (MP) software in PC compatible computer. RESULTS: The total abnormal rate of MP was 89.5% in POAG, and 81.6% in the early stage of POAG. By using the grade correlation analysis, there is positive correlation of the abnormal degree of MP with C/D, ocular tension, and corrected loss variance (CLV) of visualfield, negative correlation of the abnormal degree of MP with v
