Culturally enhancing a group-based motivational interviewing substance use prevention program for Latine youth.

BACKGROUND: Group Motivational Interviewing for Teens (GMIT) has been effective in reducing youth substance use in diverse communities, yet more research is needed to determine its efficacy in reducing tobacco and alternative tobacco products (ATP) use among Latine adolescents. This study modified GMIT to include a focus on ATPs (GMIT-ATP). GMIT was also linguistically translated so it could be offered in English and Spanish, culturally enhanced, and parent sessions were added (GMIT-ATP + P). METHODS: The study's aims were to 1) Develop a model of how cultural context, family relationships, a

Advanced Patient-Centered Communication for Health Behavior Change: Motivational Interviewing Workshops for Medical Learners.

INTRODUCTION: Medical settings are critical access points for behavior change counseling, and lifestyle behavior change is considered a key component of chronic disease management. The Association of American Medical Colleges recommends that future physicians be competent in shared decision making and patient-centered behavioral guidance to prevent illness and improve patient self-management of chronic disease. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a patient-centered, directive method of communication to enhance behavior change. Specific teachable strategies underlie the collaborative MI communica

An Adaptation of Motivational Interviewing Increases Quit Attempts in Smokers With Serious Mental Illness.

INTRODUCTION: Smokers with serious mental illness (SMI) have a high smoking prevalence and a low quit rate. Motivational interviewing (MI) is an empirically supported approach for addressing substance use disorders and may motivate smokers with SMI to quit. METHODS: We randomized smokers (N = 98) with SMI to receive a single 45-minute session of (1) MI with personalized feedback or (2) interactive education. We hypothesized that participants receiving the MI intervention would be more likely to follow-up on a referral for tobacco dependence treatment, to make a quit attempt, and to quit smoki

Culturally adapted motivational interviewing for Latino heavy drinkers: results from a randomized clinical trial.

A randomized clinical trial of culturally adapted and unadapted motivational interviewing to reduce drinking and related problems among heavy drinking Latinos assessed 57 participants at baseline and at 2 (86% retention) and 6 months (84% retention) after treatment. Significant decreases across both treatments were found in heavy drinking days per month and drinking consequences (p < .001), with greater reductions for drinking consequences for culturally adapted motivational interviewing at 2 months (p = .009) and continuing reductions in culturally adapted motivational interviewing at 6 month

[Ambulatory group treatment for cocaine dependent patients combining cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing].

Psychological interventions in cocaine dependent patients have demonstrated efficacy. Remarkable approaches are Contingency Management (CM) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Lack of treatment adherence is the most important limitation. Motivational Interview (MI) has been shown to be an adherence enhancer. The objective of this study is to evaluate retention and abstinence in a combined CM and CBT group treatment in patients who have reached maintenance stage according to Prochaska and DiClemente's transtheoretical model (1982). Therefore, a longitudinal study was carried out with cocain

Impact of motivational interviewing on psychosocial and symptom outcomes during breast cancer endocrine therapy.

PURPOSE: Adjuvant endocrine therapy (ET) is recommended to women with hormone receptor-positive (HR +) breast cancer for 5-10 years to reduce recurrence risk and mortality, but adhering to ET for this full period is challenging due to the physical and psychosocial effects of treatment. We sought to understand how participation in a patient-centered counseling intervention affected anxiety and depression, recurrence worry, and treatment related symptoms. METHODS: We conducted a single-arm pilot study over a 12-month period, consisting of five counselor-led motivational interviewing (MI) counse

A Systematic Review of Motivational Interviewing to Address Substance Use with Justice-Involved Adults.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is widely used in substance abuse treatment, possibly due to the short sessions and the treatment's cost-effectiveness. Previous research has established the efficacy of MI among a broad range of populations and outcomes. However, there is a lack of a review of the knowledge about if MI works with justice-involved individuals who have substance use issues. Purpose: This review aimed to examine the extent of the literature on MI as a treatment to decrease rates of substance use for justice-involved individuals. Methods: The databases utilized for the review includ

Coding Client Language in Motivational Interviewing for HIV Medication Adherence Using Self-Determination Theory.

BACKGROUND: Both motivational interviewing (MI) and self-determination theory (SDT) emphasise the importance of an individual's autonomy. SDT proposes that motivation is on a continuum with autonomous motivation (AM) at the self-determined end of the spectrum. Whether client speech reflects AM is not coded in MI process studies, however, as it is subsumed under the broader category of change talk (CT). We aimed to code naturalistic speech within MI sessions for HIV medication (antiretroviral) adherence according to whether expressed motivation was autonomous or controlled. We then assessed rel

Impact of motivational interviewing on the motivations and attitudes mothers of only children toward childbearing.

BACKGROUND: One of the most crucial components in addressing the issue of population aging is a shift in societal attitudes and perceptions. By challenging stereotypes and promoting accurate, effective awareness, we can foster positive change. This study aimed to determine the impact of motivational interviewing on the motivations and attitudes of mothers of only children toward childbearing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest-posttest design with a control group and an intervention group. The research population consisted of mothers of only children who h

Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy to Aid Community Integration for Veterans With Past Homelessness.

OBJECTIVE: Community integration is a key outcome for individuals with a history of homelessness after they attain permanent housing. The goals of finding purpose, meaning, and belonging in one's community-despite their importance in predicting mental well-being and housing stability-are frequently elusive for recently housed individuals. This study aimed to evaluate a novel psychosocial intervention that combines two evidence-based practices, motivational interviewing (MI) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), to improve motivation and functional outcomes related to community integration.

Systematic Review of Use of Motivational Interviewing to Increase Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Care Continuum Participation.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a prevention approach with potential for reducing HIV incidence with widespread adoption. Despite this, more research is needed to inform interventions to optimize PrEP use. Motivational interviewing (MI) shows promise for enhancing PrEP utilization, however, research comprehensively examining its effectiveness in advancing PrEP care continuum participation remains limited. This study aims to address this deficit through a systematic literature review, utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and Let Evidence G

Characteristics of Patients Who Do Not Respond to Motivational Interviewing for Heart Failure Self-care.

BACKGROUND: Motivational interviewing (MI) improves heart failure (HF) self-care for most yet fails to work for some patients. Identifying patients less likely to benefit from MI would save time in identifying a more suitable treatment for these patients. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify the characteristics of adults with HF less likely to clinically improve self-care after MI. METHODS: This was a secondary intervention group analysis (n = 230) of MOTIVATional intErviewing to improve self-care in Heart Failure patients (MOTIVATE-HF), a trial evaluating MI in improving HF self

Computer-assisted motivational interviewing for contraceptive use in women leaving prison: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Rates of unintended pregnancies in women with a history of incarceration are high and access to contraception before and after arrest can be limited. Individualized counseling can better prepare women for healthy pregnancy or provide an opportunity for contraceptive education and access within correctional facilities. In this study, we assessed the efficacy of motivational interviewing as an individualized intervention to increase the initiation of contraceptive methods while incarcerated and continuation after release in female inmates who wanted to avoid pregnancy for at least on

Effect of motivational interviewing in hypertensive patients (MIdNIgHT): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Only one-third of hypertensive patients achieve and maintain blood-pressure control. This is attributed to low treatment adherence and has a negative impact on clinical outcomes. Adherence is multidimensional and involves aspects both related to patient characteristics and to the chronic nature of the disease. In this context, motivational interviewing has been proposed as an approach to foster patients' motivations to change their behavior for the benefit of their own health, thus providing more lasting behavioral changes. DESIGN AND METHODS: Single-center, parallel, randomized c
