Motor abilities of adolescents with a disruptive behavior disorder: The role of comorbidity with ADHD.

The aim of this study was to explore the incidence, type and severity of motor impairment in male adolescents with a disruptive behavior disorder (DBD) and evaluate the role of comorbid ADHD. The Bruininks-Oseretsky test of motor proficiency, Second Edition was administered to examine a detailed motor profile and to compare the motor abilities of individuals with DBD (n = 99) to those of controls (n = 87). Additional subgroup analyses were conducted within the clinical population and encompassed (1) analyzing differences in motor profiles between individuals diagnosed with oppositional defiant

The 24-hour movement behaviour compositions of children with and without impaired motor coordination: The Moves-UP project.

The 24-hour movement behaviours, including sleep, sedentary behaviour (SB), and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) are crucial for a child's healthy growth and development. Yet, the full 24-hour movement behaviour composition has not been thoroughly explored in children with suspected Developmental Coordination Disorder (sDCD). The aim of this study was to compare the 24-hour movement behaviour compositions of children with sDCD to their typically developing (TD) peers and to assess the associations between movement behaviours and motor competence. Sixty-nine children (mean age 8.6

Oculomotor atypicalities in Developmental Coordination Disorder.

Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) fail to acquire adequate motor skill, yet surprisingly little is known about the oculomotor system in DCD. Successful completion of motor tasks is supported by accurate visual feedback. The purpose of this study was to determine whether any oculomotor differences can distinguish between children with and without a motor impairment. Using eye tracking technology, visual fixation, smooth pursuit, and pro- and anti-saccade performance were assessed in 77 children that formed three groups: children with DCD (aged 7-10), chronologically age (C

Fine motor deficiencies in children diagnosed as DCD based on poor grapho-motor ability.

A sample of 125 children from grades 4 and 5 of two normal Dutch primary schools were investigated regarding the incidence of handwriting problems and other fine motor disabilities. Handwriting quality was assessed with the concise assessment method for children's handwriting (BHK) and the school questionnaire for teachers (SQT). Two groups of 12 children each were formed, one group of good writers and a group of poor writers selected from the lower performance range. The latter group was investigated in depth by assessing general and fine motor ability using the Movement Assessment Battery fo

Relation between binocular vision alteration and prehension movements in children: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: To investigate, map, and synthesize evidence regarding the correlation between changes in binocular vision and fine motor skills among children. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of existing evidence, following the guidelines and checklist outlined in "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses - Scoping Reviews" (PRISMAScR). RESULTS: Sixteen papers were systematically included in our scoping review. A predominant focus was placed on assessing the impact of strabismus on motor skills. Most of the studies used motor test batteries for comprehensive analys

"The system is a bit broken…" a qualitative exploration of barriers in the pathway for diagnosing Developmental Coordination Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 5% of children are affected by a neurodevelopmental disorder of their sensorimotor skills. DSM-V and ICD-10, the two most widely used diagnostic systems, define this diagnostically as 'Developmental Coordination Disorder' (DCD) or 'Specific Developmental Disorder of Motor Function' (SDDMF), respectively. A diagnosis of DCD has been found to have a detrimental impact on a range of outcomes (e.g., health and education). It is therefore crucial that these children receive timely intervention. This is reliant, however, on effective assessment and support pathways. Researc

Swallowing skill training approaches and underlying motor learning principles: A scoping review.

PURPOSE: While dysphagia rehabilitation has traditionally focused on muscle strengthening, there is an increasing shift towards harnessing motor cortical plasticity to modify swallowing motor output via swallowing skill training. We reviewed current swallowing skill training approaches and framed existing evidence in the context of motor learning principles. METHOD: Searches were conducted across six databases (Scopus, CINHAL, MEDLINE, PUBMED, Emcare, and Web of Science) and the grey literature. Two researchers independently screened studies for inclusion using Covidence. English publications

Early signs of functioning and contextual factors in children 0 to 6 years of age at high risk of or with developmental coordination disorder: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) can significantly impact body structures and functions, activities, participation and contextual factors. Using a scoping review methodology, we aimed to identify the characteristics or signs that can have an early impact on the development and functioning of children with DCD between 0 and 6 years. METHODS: We searched the Medline, Cochrane and PEDro databases. The screening of the 1580 articles obtained was conducted independently and in duplicate. From the included articles, among others, we extracted results that reported the early dev

Specific Learning Disorder in Children and Adolescents, a Scoping Review on Motor Impairments and Their Potential Impacts.

Mastering motor skills is important for children to achieve functional mobility and participate in daily activities. Some studies have identified that students with specific learning disorders (SLD) could have impaired motor skills; however, this postulate and the potential impacts remain unclear. The purpose of the scoping review was to evaluate if SLD children have motor impairments and examine the possible factors that could interfere with this assumption. The sub-objective was to investigate the state of knowledge on the lifestyle behavior and physical fitness of participants with SLD and

Concurrent validity of the Gardner Test of Visual-Motor Skills.

Scores on the Test of Visual-motor Skills, Developmental Test of Visual-motor Integration, and Bender-Gestalt test were compared for a sample of 44 elementary school children referred for evaluation of learning disorders. While the tests shared common variance, the mean standard score on the Test of Visual-motor Skills was significantly lower than the means of the other two tests, suggesting caution in the clinical use of the new scale.

Gross Motor Development in Children With Autism: Longitudinal Trajectories From the Growing Up in New Zealand Study.

This study explored gross motor development (GMD) trajectories among 6359 children, with and without autism, from the Growing Up in New Zealand longitudinal cohort study. By the age of 8, 173 children had either an autism diagnosis (n = 108) or parent-reported autism concerns (n = 65). Gross motor milestones were reported by mothers when children were 9, 24, and 54 months of age. We found that irrespective of autism diagnosis, GMD delays at 24 months of age were more likely among girls, children born preterm, and those whose mothers identified as European. A mixed-effect logistic regression mo

Motor correlates of ADHD: contribution of reading disability and oppositional defiant disorder.

This study investigated whether the likelihood of motor impairment in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) increases with the presence of other disorders, and whether the co-occurring diagnoses of reading disability (RD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) account for the motor deficits seen in ADHD. A total of 291 children (218 boys, 73 girls) participated. Six groups of children were compared: ADHD only (n = 29); RD only (n = 63); ADHD and RD (n = 47); ADHD and ODD (n = 19); ADHD, RD, and ODD (n = 21); and typically developing control children (n = 112). Addition of Kinesio Taping of the orbicularis oris muscles to speech therapy rapidly improves drooling in children with neurological disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of Kinesio Taping (KT) of the orbicularis oris muscles as an adjunct to standard therapy for drooling. METHODS: Fifteen children with neurological disorders and drooling received speech therapy and twice-weekly KT of the orbicularis muscles over a 30-day period. Drooling was assessed by six parameters: impact on the life of the child and caregiver; severity of drooling; frequency of drooling; drooling volume (estimated by number of bibs used); salivary leak; and interlabial gap. Seven markers of oral motor skills were also assessed. RESULTS: KT of the orbic

Dyspraxia in autism: association with motor, social, and communicative deficits.

Impaired performance of skilled gestures, referred to as dyspraxia, is consistently reported in children with autism; however, its neurological basis is not well understood. Basic motor skill deficits are also observed in children with autism and it is unclear whether dyspraxia observed in children with autism can be accounted for by problems with motor skills. Forty-seven high-functioning children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), autism, or Asperger syndrome (43 males, four females; mean age 10y 7m [SD 1y 10m], mean Full-scale IQ (FSIQ) 99.4 [SD 15.9]), and 47 typically developing (TD)

Relations between communication and motor skills in young children with Down syndrome: a brief report.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Children with Down syndrome (DS) experience delays across multiple developmental domains, including communication and motor coordination. While prior studies have investigated these domains separately, few have examined their interrelation using population-level data. This study aimed to evaluate (1) differences between young children with DS and typically developing (TD) peers in early communication skills and motor-coordination difficulties, and (2) whether the relationship between these domains is similar across groups. METHODS: This brief report used data from th

Procedural and Strategic Visuomotor Learning Deficits in Children With Developmental Coordination Disorder.

Purpose: Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is characterized by poor coordination and clumsiness in children. Subjects often show unsteady gait, frequent tripping, and difficulty holding objects. Here we evaluated the implicit and explicit motor learning capabilities of children with DCD. Method: We assessed a total of 80 children (4-12 years old). These children were divided into two groups of 40 participants each. One group with DCD diagnosis and a control group. Using a prism adaptation paradigm, we evaluated whether DCD affects procedural visuomotor adaptation. This adaptation typic

Is social anxiety disorder in childhood associated with developmental deficit/delay?

Children with social anxiety disorder (SAD) have been reported to display reduced social skills. Less attention has been paid to whether neurodevelopmental deficits/delays (NDD's) in language and motor function may contribute to their impaired social skills. The present study aimed to assess the extent of language and motor impairment in children with SAD. A population-based screened sample consisting of 150 children (11-12 years) was assessed with a diagnostic interview (Kiddie-SADS), the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI) and the Motor Assessment Battery for Children (MABC).
