Metastatic Myoepithelial Carcinoma Ex Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Sublingual Salivary Gland.

Myoepithelial carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma is a very rare malignant neoplasm of the salivary gland. Owing to its rarity, its clinical features and treatment are not well characterized. We describe a case of a patient who was referred to our department with a six-month history of a bulge on the right side of the floor of the mouth and a submandibular mass with progressive enlargement. The mass was resected, and an elective level I neck dissection was performed. Histological examination revealed myoepithelial carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the sublingual salivary gland. Thoracic compute

Giant Peripheral Temporomandibular Osteoma With Immediate Reconstruction of Mandible.

Osteoma is a benign osteogenic tumor, which is characterized the slow-growing proliferation of compact or cancellous bone. The etiology of the lesion is not well established. Among the hypotheses, the following are related: a traumatic factor, infectious processes, or true neoplasm due to the origin of cartilaginous cells. It can present at any age, usually in young adult individuals, with equal prevalence in both sexes. The clinical characteristics of the peripheral osteoma are represented by slow asymptomatic growth, which leads to swelling and, thus, facial asymmetry. When it is related to

Papillary cystadenocarcinoma of the sublingual gland.

A 68-year-old Caucasian gentleman presented with a 6-month history of a left sided Level I/II neck swelling involving the floor of mouth. MRI revealed a large cystic lesion and histology confirmed a diagnosis of primary papillary cystadenocarcinoma of the sublingual gland. Papillary cystadenocarcinoma was first described in 1991 by the World Health Organisation [WHO], and is a rare malignant neoplasm characterised by cysts and papillary endo-cystic projections. Papillary cystadenocarcinoma arising from the sublingual glands is extremely rare and has the potential to metastasise to cervical lym

Intraparotid Osteolipoma: Treatment Option and Surgical View.

Osteolipoma is a benign neoplasm originating from the mesenchymal fat tissue cells and characterized by the presence of bone formation. In the head and neck district osteolipoma has been described as parapharyngeal, nasopharinx, submandibular gland, eyelid, floor of the mouth, and skull base lesion. Only 1 case of osteolipoma was reported as a neoplasm of the parotid region. Considering the rarity of the osteolipoma, our purpose was to describe the first case of totally intraparotid gland localization of osteolipoma and summarize and review the actual literature concerning the presence of this

Metastasis of Renal Cell Carcinoma to the Mandible.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common tumor of the kidney. Although RCC often metastasizes to other organs, metastasis to the head and neck region is rare, and metastasis to the mandible is very unusual. Given the fact that metastasis of primary neoplasms is not always predictable, it is essential to rule out metastatic carcinoma in jaw lesions. We herein report a rare presentation of metastasis of RCC to the mandible, in which the metastatic lesion in the oral cavity was found first, followed by the primary lesion, in a 22-year-old girl who suffered from pain in the left temporomandib

Socioeconomic groups and cancer risk at death in the Swiss Canton of Vaud.

Data collected by the Cancer Registry of the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland, were used to estimate proportional mortality ratios (PMR) and mortality odds ratios (MOR) for various neoplasms according to social class and sector of occupation (agriculture versus others). Mortality ratios were elevated in lower social classes for cancers of the lung (MOR = 1.18 for social class IV or V vs I or II) and other sites strictly related to tobacco (mouth or pharynx, oesophagus and larynx; MOR = 1.70), and (though not significantly) for cancers of the stomach (MOR = 1.16) and uterus (MOR = 1.30 for cervix an

Primary Merkel cell carcinoma of the oral mucosa in a young adult male: report of a rare case.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a highly aggressive neoplasm of skin with neuroendocrine differentiation. Primary MCC of the oral mucosa is exceedingly rare and even more unresponsive to therapy. A 15-year-old male presents with gradually increasing painless swelling in right side of the floor of mouth for 6 weeks. Computed tomography of head and neck region showed globular mass (4.6 cm × 1.7 cm) involving right side of the floor of mouth. Fine-needle aspiration from the upper deep cervical node suggested small round cell tumor. A trucut biopsy showed mass composed of trabeculae and nests of tu

Cancer mortality in migrant populations within Italy.

Italian death certification rates from all causes of death, all diseases of the circulatory system, all neoplasms, and cancers of the upper digestive and respiratory tract, stomach, intestines, lung and breast in middle age (45-64 years) were analyzed according to selected geographic areas of birth and residence at death. For total cancer mortality and most neoplasms considered, the rates in middle age were closer to those of place of birth than to those of area of residence, although this pattern was more evident for some sites (e.g., mouth or pharynx, esophagus, larynx, stomach or bladder) t

Risk of Parkinson's disease-related death in cancer survivors: A population-based study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: The risk of Parkinson's disease (PD)-related death in patients with cancer largely unexplored. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Neoplasms ANd other causes of DEath (NANDE) study, which investigates the causes of death in patients with cancer in Japan. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were calculated to compare the risk of PD-related deaths in patients with cancer to that of the general population. Poisson regression models were employed to estimate the relative risk of PD-related death in the subgroups. RESULTS: The cohort included 548,485 patients with cancer, yielding 2,0

Fibromatosis of infratemporal space.

Fibromatosis is a rare benign mesenchymal neoplasm which primarily originates in the muscle, connective tissue, fascial sheaths, and musculoaponeurotic structures. It is commonly seen as abdominal tumour but in maxillofacial region, the occurrence of these tumours is very rare and exceedingly rare in infratemporal space. Often misdiagnosed due to its varied clinical behaviour, fibromatosis is benign, slow-growing, infiltrative tumour without any metastatic potential, but is locally aggressive causing organ dysfunction along with high recurrence rate. We report a case of fibromatosis involving

Laparoscopic Spleen-Preserving Total Pancreatectomy for a Main-Duct Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm.

INTRODUCTION: Main-duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the pancreas (M-IPMN) are potentially malignant cystic neoplasms that can degenerate into invasive malignancy in 43 % of cases.1 Although laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy and distal pancreatectomy have been previously described for the management of pancreatic neoplasms, laparoscopic total pancreatectomy is rarely described. We present a video demonstrating a laparoscopic spleen-preserving total pancreatectomy in a patient with M-IPMN. CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy 66-year-old male was diagnosed with recurrent pancreatitis

Neutropenia as a Complication of Tumefactive Demyelinating Disease: A Case Report.

UNLABELLED: Tumefactive demyelination is an aggressive, localized, generally solitary area of demyelination that often mimics a neoplasm. We present a case of a 13-year-old female patient who presented with sudden-onset progressive hemiplegia and hemianopsia. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed tumefactive demyelination with partial rim of enhancement. During inpatient rehabilitation, she developed myalgias, rash, and abdominal and mouth pain with evidence for severe neutropenia. The neutropenia was determined to be a secondary complication of the tumefactive disease process. This s

Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome Associated With Extrapulmonary Small Cell Cancer Detected by 18F-FDG PET/CT.

A 46-year-old woman suffering from lower extremity weakness, dysarthria, dysphagia, dyspnea, and dry mouth was suspected of having Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome based on the characteristic electromyographic abnormalities of right ulnar nerve, which demonstrated reduced resting compound muscle action potential amplitude and greater than 100% incremental change in high-frequency repetitive nerve stimulation. An F-FDG PET/CT was performed to detect the underlying neoplasm and revealed a retroperitoneal soft tissue mass with high F-FDG avidity in the left iliac fossa. The patient's symptoms we

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor with complete replacement of the pancreas by serous cystic neoplasms in a patient with von Hippel-Lindau disease: a case report.

BACKGROUND: von Hippel-Lindau disease is a dominantly inherited multi-system syndrome with neoplastic hallmarks. Pancreatic lesions associated with von Hippel-Lindau include serous cystic neoplasms, simple cysts, and neuroendocrine tumors. The combination of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors and serous cystic neoplasms is relatively rare, and the surgical treatment of these lesions must consider both preservation of pancreatic function and oncological clearance. We report a patient with von Hippel-Lindau disease successfully treated with pancreas-sparing resection of a pancreatic neuroendocrine

Lingual Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Two Horses.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common malignant neoplasms in horses, but lingual SCC has seldom been reported. On separate occasions, a 12-year-old American Quarter Horse mare and an 18-year-old American Saddlebred stallion were presented to the Auburn University Large Animal Teaching Hospital for evaluation of weight loss, dysphagia, and ptyalism. Evaluation of each horse included physical examination, skull radiographs, oral examination, complete blood count and serum biochemistry profile, endoscopic evaluation of the mouth, and biopsy of tissue from a lesion found on the t

Orofacial disease: update for the dental clinical team: 2. Ulcers, erosions and other causes of sore mouth. Part I.

Mouth ulcers are one of the most common oral complaints. The term ulcer is used usually where there is damage to both epithelium and lamina propria, and a crater, sometimes made more obvious clinically by swelling caused by oedema or proliferation in the surrounding tissue. The term erosion is usually used where the damage is somewhat more superficial. Most ulcers/erosions are due to local causes such as trauma or burns. Some are caused by aphthae or malignant neoplasms, and a few have aetiology in obvious systemic disease. Ulcers of local cause, drugs, aphthous ulcers, Behcet's syndrome and m

A large osteoid osteoma of the mandibular condyle causing conductive hearing loss: a case report and review of literature.

Osteoid osteomas are benign skeletal neoplasms that are commonly encountered in the bones of the lower extremities, but are exceedingly rare in jaw bones with a prevalence of less than 1%. This unique clinical entity is usually seen in younger individuals, with nocturnal pain and swelling as its characteristic clinical manifestations. The size of the lesion is rarely found to be more than 2 cm. We hereby report a rare case of osteoid osteoma originating from the neck of the mandibular condyle that grew to large enough proportions to result in conductive hearing loss in addition to pain, swelli
