Annotated and updated checklist of marine crabs (Decapoda: Brachyura) of Mozambique supported by morphological and molecular data from shelf and slope species of the MOZAMBIQUE surveys.

An updated checklist of Mozambican marine brachyuran crabs is generated based on an exhaustive revision of the existing literature, together with the additional records provided by the specimens collected throughout the three MOZAMBIQUE surveys carried out in Mozambican waters during three consecutive years (20072009) by the Instituto Espaol de Oceanografa, (Spanish Institute of Oceanography, IEO). A total of 269 species, grouped in 15 superfamilies, 26 families and 172 genera are reported in the checklist, and a detailed inventory is produced with the list and remarks about the brachyuran spe

Exploring mental health disparities in Mozambique: Depression and anxiety symptoms among reproductive-aged women using data from Mozambique Demographic and Health Survey 2022-23.

BACKGROUND: Mental health conditions, particularly symptoms of anxiety and depression among women of reproductive age, constitute a substantial public health burden. However, comprehensive studies on these issues are scarce in Mozambique. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with depression and anxiety symptoms among Mozambican women of reproductive age using nationally representative data. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We analyzed data from the 2022-23 Mozambique Demographic and Health Survey, including a sample of 13,183 women aged 15-49. Depression and

Realist evaluation of maternity waiting home intervention models in Inhambane, Mozambique: protocol for a comparative embedded case study, the Mozambique-Canada Maternal Health Project.

INTRODUCTION: This is a study protocol that tests and refines realist theories regarding the uptake and scale-up of the linked maternity waiting home (hereafter MWH) and facility birth intervention in the Mozambican context. The theories were developed through a realist review of MWH-facility birth literature from low-income and middle-income countries. The aim of the proposed study is to contribute to a contextually refined understanding of the causal chains underlying MWH-facility birth adoption by pregnant women and their families, communities, the health system and donors. METHODS AND ANA

Prolactin signaling in the highly osmotolerant Mozambique tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus.

Teleost fishes maintain hydromineral balance through the hormonal regulation of epithelial ion transport. In the euryhaline, and remarkably osmotolerant Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), two prolactin (Prl) isoforms, Prl188 and Prl177, are released from the pituitary in response to hyposmotic stimulation to promote branchial ion absorption. Prl188 and Prl177 bind two Prl receptors (Prlrs), Prlr1 and Prlr2, which are expressed in the pituitary and key ionoregulatory organs, including the gill. To understand how Prl signaling operates across a range of salinities that reflect their s

Parasitological efficacy of seasonal malaria chemoprevention in Nampula, northern Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Deployment of seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) for young children using monthly sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine-amodiaquine (SPAQ) has recently been extended to Central and East Africa. METHODS: A pilot pharmacometric assessment was nested within a larger deployment of SMC in a high malaria transmission area in northern Mozambique. SPAQ was given to 460 healthy children in two large villages. Simultaneous filter-paper blood spot malaria quantitative PCRs, blood slide microscopy and antimalarial drug measurements were taken before, then 7 and 28 d after first SPAQ administration.

Spatial Distribution of HIV Prevalence among Young People in Mozambique.

Mozambique has a high burden of HIV and is currently ranked sixth worldwide for adult prevalence. In Mozambique, HIV prevalence is not uniformly distributed geographically and throughout the population. We investigated the spatial distribution of HIV infection among adolescents and young people in Mozambique using the 2009 AIDS Indicator Survey (AIS). Generalized geoadditive modeling, combining kriging and additive modeling, was used to study the geographical variability of HIV risk among young people. The nonlinear spatial effect was assessed through radial basis splines. The estimation proce

Cancer in Mozambique: Results from two population-based cancer registries.

Results from two recently established population-based registries in Mozambique are reported: Beira in the central region (2014-2017) and Maputo, the capital city, in the South (2015-2017). The results are compared to those from Maputo (Lourenço Marques at the time) in 1956-1960 (appearing Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Vol 1), and with estimated incidence rates from other regions of Africa. The elevated prevalence of HIV infection (12.6% of adults in 2018) results in high rates for HIV-related cancers, and the greater prevalence in central Mozambique, compared to the south, largely expla

Obstetric fistulae in southern Mozambique: incidence, obstetric characteristics and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric fistula is one of the most devastating consequences of unmet needs in obstetric services. Systematic reviews suggest that the pooled incidence of fistulae in community-based studies is 0.09 per 1000 recently pregnant women; however, as facility delivery is increasing, for the most part, in Africa, incidence of fistula should decrease. Few population-based studies on fistulae have been undertaken in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Mozambique. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of obstetric fistulae in recently delivered mothers, and to describe the clinical character

Malaria in rural Mozambique. Part II: children admitted to hospital.

BACKGROUND: Characterization of severe malaria cases on arrival to hospital may lead to early recognition and improved management. Minimum community based-incidence rates (MCBIRs) complement hospital data, describing the malaria burden in the community. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all admitted malaria cases to a Mozambican rural hospital between June 2003 and May 2005 was conducted. Prevalence and case fatality rates (CFR) for each sign and symptom were calculated. Logistic regression was used to identify variables which were independent risk factors for death. MCBIRs for malaria and

Seasonal malaria chemoprevention in northern Mozambique: a cost-effectiveness analysis.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is endemic in Mozambique and one of the leading causes of death in children under 5 years old. In 2020 the country adopted the WHO-recommended seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) strategy and delivered the intervention in all 23 districts of Nampula province between January and April 2023. The aim of this study is to estimate the cost-effectiveness of SMC in Nampula, Mozambique. METHODS: Financial cost of implementing SMC were estimated from a limited health care provider perspective for the year 2023 in US$. Data on resource use of the SMC implementation was assessed f

Pathways to Diagnose Infectious Pulmonary Vascular Disease in Rural Mozambique.

Background: Schistosomiasis, HIV, and tuberculosis frequently lead to pulmonary hypertension in low- and middle-income countries. Lack of specific testing and limited access to right heart catheterization hamper confirmation of the etiology of pulmonary hypertension due to schistosomiasis. In addition, low health literacy and poor socioeconomic status further compromise prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment. Clinical algorithms for early screening, including hand-held echocardiography and point-of-care testing performed by non-specialists, are needed in rural Sub-Saharan Africa to decentr

Increased peripartum mortality associated with maternal subclinical malaria in Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium falciparum infection in pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa is often asymptomatic. As these forms of malaria are often submicroscopic and difficult to diagnose by conventional methods (microscopy and/or rapid diagnostic test), diagnosis requires the use of molecular techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This study analyses the prevalence of subclinical malaria and its association with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, a topic that has been scarcely evaluated in the literature. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using semi-nested multiple

Invasive Salmonella Infections Among Children From Rural Mozambique, 2001-2014.

BACKGROUND: Invasive nontyphoidal Salmonella (iNTS) has emerged as a cause of bacteremia in African children and HIV-infected adults, which is associated with high mortality. Epidemiological data and burden of iNTS infections in resource-constrained settings are needed to better define preventive and curative strategies. METHODS: Blood and, if appropriate, cerebrospinal fluid, were collected from children <15 years of age with fever or severe disease admitted to the Manhiça District Hospital and cultured for NTS; isolates were then characterized. RESULTS: From January 2001 to December 2014,

Assessing girls' HIV vulnerability: evidence from Botswana, Malawi and Mozambique.

Past research documents multiple factors associated with girls' susceptibility to human immunodeficiency virus transmission; yet a literature review found no systematic approach to measure vulnerability. This study characterized, developed and tested a set of indicators to measure girls' vulnerability, resulting in the vulnerable girls index (VGI). A quasi- experimental, separate-sample pre-/post-test design was used to test the index. Adolescent girls were randomly drawn for the pre-test (2277 respondents) and post-test (1418 respondents) from 16 purposively selected communities in Botswana,

'Tradition', person, gender, and STD/HIV/AIDS in southern Mozambique.

In southern Mozambique, the "traditional" notion of personhood is constructed through a process, as an outcome of diachronic and synchronic social relations that encompass kin and other peers, including spirits. Both person and body are thought of as elements traversed and determined by these relations, which include the gender relations whose complementarity finds expression in alliances and the production of descendants. In this system of agnatic kinship, descent is possible through women, who produce the male and female persons. Because of women's structural position, they may be suspected

Persistent konzo and cyanogen toxicity from cassava in northern Mozambique.

We aimed to detect new cases of konzo and monitor cyanogen exposure from cassava flour in communities previously affected by konzo epidemics in Nampula Province, northern Mozambique. Other objectives were to detect subclinical upper motor neuron damage in schoolchildren and test a new kit to measure urinary thiocyanate concentration. In 1999 and 2000, we carried out active and passive case detection for konzo in Memba and Mogincual Districts. In July and October, 1999, we collected cassava flour from 30 houses in three communities and measured cyanogen concentrations with a picrate kit. In Oct

Human intestinal infection due to coccidia in Mozambique: two cases.

A case of intestinal infection by Cryptosporidium parvum and another of intestinal Isospora belli infection, both in AIDS patients, are described. The two patients presented pulmonary tuberculosis symptoms and watery diarrhoea. Modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain of stools gave a definitive diagnosis in both cases. They are the first reports of intestinal coccidia infections in AIDS patients described in Mozambique.

Financial value regime alignment and Mozambique's heterogeneous energy landscape.

AIMS: To investigate whether localization of beta-catenin is helpful in differentiating primary ovarian mucinous carcinoma and colorectal adenocarcinoma metastatic to the ovary. Extra-ovarian cancers which metastasize to the ovaries, especially from colorectal adenocarcinoma, frequently mimic primary ovarian carcinomas, particularly endometrioid and mucinous types. Distinguishing primary ovarian carcinoma from metastatic colorectal carcinoma is important for both therapeutic and prognostic reasons. Even after thorough histological examination, metastatic colorectal adenocarcinomas are still of
