A 64-year-old Thai man had a primary mucoepidermoid carcinoma, a variant of the cholangiocarcinoma, of the left lobe of the liver. A 5 x 4 x 3 cm tumor metastasized within the liver and to the porta hepatic and parapancreatic lymph nodes with compression of the head of pancreas and distal part of the common bile duct resulting in obstructive janudice. The patient died within 7 months from massive hemorrhage of a chronic peptic ulcer of the duodenum. Review of the medical literature in the English language disclosed 11 primary mucoepidermoid carcinomas of the bile ducts, including the present i

Three patients with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the bile duct are described. In two patients the tumor arose from the common hepatic duct. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the extrahepatic bile duct has not been previously reported. The clinical features and pathologic behavior of this rare type of tumor are similar to the usual biliary adenocarcinoma. The coexistence of Clonorchis sinensis infestation and primary pyogenic cholangitis raises the possibility of an etiologic association.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is one of the most common malignant tumors in salivary glands and is usually associated with mastermind-like transcriptional coactivator 2 (MAML2) rearrangement. Primary nasopharyngeal mucoepidermoid carcinoma is extremely rare, and MAML2 status was reported in only two studies. Herein, we present a 70-year-old male patient with incidentally found nasopharyngeal mucoepidermoid carcinoma. MAML2 translocation was detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization test. Additionally, we conducted a comprehensive literature review and summarized the clinicopathological feature

We described a rare case of carcinoma expleomorphic adenoma in which mucoepidermoid carcinoma arise from a previous incompletely excised pleomorphic adenoma of the submandibular gland. The tumor was surgically resected along with a modified radical neck dissection and postoperative radiotherapy. The patient remained disease free 3 years after the last operation. The pathology showed concurrent presence of Warthin's tumor in the specimen. The concurrent presence of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, pleomorphic adenoma, and synchronous Warthin's tumor make this case unique, and such a combination associ

Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia (SMCE) of the salivary gland is a rare variant of mucoepidermoid carcinoma. We report a case of SMCE in the right submandibular gland of a 79-year-old man. Fine needle aspiration cytology revealed cohesive clusters of atypical squamous epithelial cells admixed with cells containing intracytoplasmic mucin and eosinophils. Histologically, the tumor was composed of epithelial nests with keratinizing cells occasionally present at the center, as well as peripherally located atypical basaloid cells, and some mucin-containing cells embedded in a f

Pleomorphic adenoma with foci of squamous and mucinous differentiation can potentially be misdiagnosed as low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The circumscribed borders of the tumor, gradual merging of mucoepidermoid foci into areas typical of pleomorphic adenoma, and presence of keratinization are features against the latter diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lung is a rare malignant tumor, accounting for 0.1%-0.2% of all lung malignancies. It is a primary salivary gland tumor of the lung. Surgical resection is the primary treatment for pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma, for which there has been no standardized treatment strategy. This article reports a case of a young woman with pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma with hemoptysis as the first symptom.
CASE SUMMARY: A 24-year-old female patient presented with "4 d of hemoptysis" as the chief complaint. She had no special history and denied any smoking or

PURPOSE: Children diagnosed with osteosarcoma (OS) and Ewing sarcoma (ES) have greatly benefited from the addition of alkylator therapy. However, with greater numbers of long-term survivors, the rising incidence of secondary malignant neoplasms (SMNs) is concerning. Herein we report on 2 patients with sarcoma who developed a case of secondary mucoepidermoid carcinoma after chemotherapy treatment without associated radiation therapy. To our knowledge, this is the first series of mucoepidermoid carcinomas arising in pediatric patients treated for sarcoma without radiotherapy.
METHODS: Long-term

Non-sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare benign salivary gland tumor comprised of non-sebaceous epithelial cells and lymphoid tissue. Although its clinicopathological features have been described, its histogenesis and genetic background have not yet been elucidated. MAML2 rearrangement and the resultant CRTC1/3-MAML2 fusion gene are well-known specific genetic changes in mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Here, we present a case of lymphoepithelial tumor characterized by histomorphology of the non-sebaceous lymphadenoma and CRTC1-MAML2 fusion gene. The patient was an 83-year-old woman with an 8-year histor

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus is an unusual, but well-recognized variant of thymic malignant tumors. Its biologic behavior generally depends on the degree of differentiation and the amount of cellular atypia. High grade tumors can be aggressive neoplasms with a tendency to invade and develop metastases. We report on a case of a 53-year-old man, who presented chest discomfort, dyspnea, and weakness. As heart function tests were normal, the patient underwent radiologic examination, which showed a well-demarcated mass in the anterior mediastinum. Histologic examination of the surgically

In this case report we describe a rare tumor--Oncocytic variant of Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the submandibular salivary gland with a review of the literature. Oncocytic metaplasia in salivary glands is a benign change that is associated with increasing age and also seen in a few salivary gland neoplasms', which include oncocytoma, Warthin's tumor, and the rare, oncocytic carcinoma. Oncocytic differentiation in mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is uncommon. Only twelve well-documented cases of oncocytic MEC have been reported previously all of which occurred in the parotid gland. To the best of

PURPOSE: To report a case of conjunctival mucoepidermoid carcinoma occurring in a long-standing pterygium in a 33-year-old Cambodian man infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
METHODS: Review of clinical history and histopathologic findings.
RESULTS: A pterygium that was present for 8 years suddenly became highly inflamed and underwent rapid growth. After the initial diagnostic conjunctival and corneal biopsy showed mucoepidermoid carcinoma, subsequent additional deep excisions of the adjacent sclera and cornea were necessary to completely excise the tumor. Cytokeratin and muc

INTRODUCTION: Primary pulmonary salivary gland-type carcinomas are rare malignancies arising from minor salivary gland tissue in the lower respiratory tract. Given their rarity, constituting <1% of all primary lung malignancies, their epidemiological features and outcomes remain poorly documented. This study analyzed data from the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database to identify primary pulmonary salivary gland carcinomas, including the most prevalent tumor types.
METHODS: All patients diagnosed with mucoepidermoid carcinoma, adenoid cystic c

Incidence of abundant minor salivary gland tissues in the posterior part of hard palate surges the likelihood of salivary gland neoplasm especially in this part of the oral cavity. Minor salivary gland tumor accounts for virtually 15% of all the salivary gland neoplasm, wherein mucoepidermoid carcinoma comprises of 35.9%. Current paper reports a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the posterior part of the hard palate which was an incidental finding. It presented as well-defined smooth swelling, the preliminary radiographic investigation revealed no appreciable bony changes and offered an impr

BACKGROUND: Warthin-like mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a newly recognized rare entity and could be misdiagnosed as a benign Warthin tumor. We report such a case of a 36-year-old male who presented with a left parotid gland mass.
CASE REPORT: Fine-needle aspiration showed features suggestive of Warthin tumor. Following parotidectomy, grossly there was a 1.6 cm well-circumscribed multilobular mass with focal areas of cystic change. Microscopically, at low magnification it had histological features resembling Warthin tumor, while lining with squamoid cells with scattered mucocytes demonstrating mi

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical presentation, diagnostic imaging, and treatment options of conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) with mucoepidermoid differentiation, an in situ stage of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the conjunctiva (MCC).
RESULTS: We report the case of an 86-year-old man presenting with a subtle limbal lesion that had only mild erythema and elevation. Based on a few atypical clinical features and an abnormal ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence tomography (UHR OCT), an incisional biopsy was performed revealing CIN with mucoepidermoid differentiation. BACKGROUND: Malignant and benign tumors of the salivary glands have been associated with exposure to ionizing radiation from various sources, including the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. However, questions remain unanswered regarding the nature and size of the risk and specific types of tumors involved.
METHODS: The incidence and pathology of malignant and benign tumors of the salivary glands was studied in the Life Span Study cohort of atomic bomb survivors followed by the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. Incident cases diagnosed duri

A rare case of a 9-year-old female with mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising in the accessory parotid gland is reported. She had complained of a painless and round mass of the left cheek for a duration of 14 months. Sialography, ultrasonography, CT scan and MRI were performed preoperatively. Sialography revealed a small duct separating from the Stensen's duct. CT and MRI showed that the tumor with smooth outline was lying on the masseter muscle and detached from the main parotid gland. The preoperative diagnosis was an accessory parotid gland tumor. The tumor was removed without facial nerve injur

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the larynx is an uncommon malignancy. Nearly all cases are found in middle-aged and elderly men. Most cases arise in the supraglottis. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is classified histologically as low grade and high grade. The prognosis is relatively good for low-grade tumor and poor for high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma, which is also referred to as adenosquamous carcinoma. The treatment is primarily surgical, although the efficacy of post-operative radiation, with and without chemotherapy, is presently under evaluation in a National Intergroup Study. The case reporte

Primary pulmonary tumors are rare in pediatrics. When they are encountered, they are usually carcinoid tumors or mucoepidermoid carcinomas. We present a patient who presented to both his primary care physician and the pediatric emergency department with recurrent bouts of wheezing and pneumonia, none of which ever completely resolved despite appropriate treatment. The patient had multiple chest films, which demonstrated the persistence of what appeared to be a right-sided infiltrate/atelectasis. Ultimately, the patient underwent a diagnostic workup that included a computed tomography scan and
